    Abstract: The Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh region is populated mostly by ethnic Armenians. Cultural traces from over two millennia indicate their long history on site. Due to the armed conflict with Azerbaijan and the violent takeover of the Republic of Artsakh by the Azerbaijani government on September 20, 2023, these cultural assets are currently at massive risk. This volume documents an interdisciplinary conference that took place in Armenia in 2022. It offers the most complete trilingual overview to date on the history, culture and global contacts of this unshielded area in the Southern Caucasus
    Abstract: Die Region Arzach/Berg-Karabach ist mehrheitlich von ethnischen Armeniern besiedelt. Kulturelle Spuren aus gut zwei Jahrtausenden weisen auf ihre lange Geschichte vor Ort hin. Durch die kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen mit Aserbaidschan und die gewaltsame Übernahme der Republik Arzach durch die aserbaidschanische Regierung am 20. September 2023 ist dieses Kulturgut gerade massiv gefährdet. Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert eine interdisziplinäre Tagung, die 2022 in Armenien stattgefunden hat. Er bietet den bisher vollständigsten dreisprachigen Überblick über die Geschichte, Kultur und globalen Kontakte dieser schutzlosen Gegend im südlichen Kaukasus

    Abstract: Weltabgewandter Sprachspieler oder »radikaler Realist«? Fremd- und Selbstzuschreibung gehen in Bezug auf den Autor Ror Wolf weit auseinander. Dies gründet auf einer nur scheinbaren Paradoxie: In Wolfs vielgestaltigem Werk vollzieht sich der Zugriff auf Wirklichkeit gerade im Modus der Sabotage, Unterbrechung, Irritation oder Verzerrung - kurz: im Modus der Störung. Ausgehend von der langen Prosa fragt Barbara Bausch nach möglichen Formen literarischer Referenzialität. Dabei konturiert sie Ror Wolfs experimentelle und zugleich engagierte Poetik des ästhetisch produktiven Störens als Kreuzungspunkt verschiedenster Suchbewegungen des Prosaschreibens in den 1950er bis 1980er Jahren

    Abstract: Nicht erst seit dem Aufkommen des Begriffs der »Cancel Culture« scheint es, als könne man schlicht nicht mehr miteinander reden. Die unterschiedlichen Konzeptionen von Ziel und Methode, also von der Strategie gesellschaftlicher Auseinandersetzungen, variieren so stark, dass sie schlicht nicht mehr kommensurabel sind. Diese Situation lässt sich als das Resultat einer langen Geschichte strategischer Entwürfe und Gegenentwürfe begreifen.     Abstract: Monuments have always been controversial. In recent decades, however, the debate about the interpretation and validity of monuments in public space has intensified, as their cultural practices of remembrance have been put to the test against the backdrop of a diverse society and related issues of (dis)power. The focus was and is primarily on monuments that are perceived as controversial, which were and are no longer treated only communicatively, but also performatively and interventively in the form of monumental changes. Questions about the effects of monuments and how to deal with them have been addressed primarily in the humanities and cultural studies. This interdisciplinary anthology aims to build on this and, in addition to historical, political or philosophical perspectives, also includes perspectives that broaden the discourse through contributions from law, theology and art studies. They put up for discussion their views on how to deal with controversial monuments in diverse societies
    Abstract: Denkmäler waren schon immer Streitobjekte. In den letzten Jahrzehnten jedoch verschärften sich die Auseinandersetzung um Deutung und Geltung von Denkmälern im öffentlichen Raum. Ihre erinnerungskulturellen Praktiken wurden vor dem Hintergrund einer heterogenen Gesellschaft und entsprechenden (Ohn-)Machtsfragen auf den Prüfstand gestellt. Im Fokus standen und stehen dabei vor allem als strittig empfundene Denkmäler, mit denen nicht mehr nur kommunikativ, sondern in Form von Denkmalveränderungen auch performativ-eingreifend umgegangen wurde und wird. Fragen zur Wirkung von und zum Umgang mit Denkmälern wurden bislang vorwiegend in den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften verhandelt. Der interdisziplinäre Sammelband möchte hieran anknüpfen und beinhaltet neben historischen, politischen oder philosophischen Perspektiven auch den Diskurs erweiternde Aspekte durch Beiträge aus der Rechtswissenschaft, der Theologie sowie der Kunstwissenschaft.     Abstract: The Global IR research programme promulgates a borderless ecology of cultures that has only an inside without an outside. This borderless ecology of cultures reinvents the human condition (including the condition of ‘the international’) as perpetually interconnected at the level of consciousness. While Western-centric IR theories depend on (neo-)Kantian philosophies to emphasize the time-space bounded identities of human beings living in visibly divided phenomenal worlds, the de-Kantian philosophies of the Global IR research programme – exemplified by the Tianxia, Advaita, and Nishida Kitaro’s Buddhism-inspired theories – recuperate the temporally-spatially indivisible phenomenal-noumenal flow of human life, thereby facilitating back-and-forth movement between the Westdominated ‘one world’ and the non-West-embodied ‘many worlds’. The central objective of the book is to demonstrate how this back-and-forth movement offers opportunities to conceive of and found a new world order that recognizes the temporally-spatially indivisible human condition on earth. The book delineates a set of guiding principles to promote an innovative practice of theory-building and policy-making that transcends the geo-centric limitations of knowledgeproduction and knowledge-application, thereby establishing the futuristic foundation of the Global IR research programme.     Abstract: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht der Autor der Frage nach, warum Technik als wesentlicher Bestandteil der Kultur in der Bildung nur eine untergeordnete Bedeutung hat und begründet mit Hilfe technikphilosophischer Analysen einen Kulturreihenansatz für die Auswahl von Inhalten für den Technikunterricht. Aus dem Doppelauftrag von Schule, Persönlichkeitsbildung und Enkulturation wird zunächst ein Interaktionsmodell für Bildung und Erziehung abgeleitet. Das Problem der Inhaltsauswahl jeder Fachdidaktik wird mit einem Modell zur Verknüpfung von Allgemeiner Didaktik und Fachwissenschaften gelöst. Darin wird die Technikphilosophie als fehlende Bezugswissenschaft identifiziert, um Aussagen zum Wesen der Technik zu ermöglichen. Durch die Analyse technikphilosophischer Ansätze wird der Technikbegriff um eine ästhetische und eine Sinn- und Wertperspektive erweitert. Aus diesem Technikbegriff ergeben sich pädagogische Perspektiven für den Technikunterricht, die schließlich über einen Kulturreihenansatz zu einem Kern Technischer Allgemeinbildung führen. Durch den Kulturreihenansatz wird begründet umrissen, wie die kulturelle Bedeutung der Technik bildungswirksam werden kann. Der Autor Thomas-Hugo Möllers ist Lehrer (Physik, Technik), Lehrerausbilder am Zentrum für schulpraktische Lehrerausbildung, Oberhausen, und arbeitete an den Bildungsstandards und dem gemeinsamen Referenzrahmen Technik (VDI) mit.

    Abstract: This book examines prisons and imprisonment. Historically, prisons and prisoners have been a source of interest to the general public. However, despite near universal acceptance of imprisonment as a feature of society, the reality of prison life, and the effects it has on individuals and communities, remain a mystery to many. Using academic scholarship, empirical research, government papers, policy reports, and accounts from lived experiences of the institution, this book analyses the complexities and contradictions of prison life, the place of the prison in twenty-first century society, and its prospects for the future. It introduces readers to key debates surrounding the use of imprisonment, and encourages readers to interrogate conventional perspectives on an institution that reflects the society in which it is situated. Cormac Behan is Lecturer in Criminology at the Technology University Dublin, Ireland. Abigail Stark is Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Central Lancashire, UK. .

A critique is presented of the views expressed by Samuel Huntington, Francis Fukuyama, and Niall Ferguson, arguing that they do not recognize the historical fact that civilizations rise and fall. It is argued that the Western economic system, which is based on neoliberalism, has adverse consequences for democracy, morality, and peace, as well as inequality, poverty, and homelessness. Written in a simple but powerful language, this book is a must read for those interested in international relations and anyone interested in current affairs.     Abstract: Können Krisen Veränderungen gesellschaftlicher Ordnungsverhältnisse und die Etablierung neuer Diskurs-Akteure bewirken? Julia Fürwitt geht dieser Frage anhand multipler gesellschaftlicher Krisensituationen Spaniens seit 2010 nach. Basierend auf den Ansätzen Michel Foucaults und Bruno Latours erarbeitet sie einen neuen diskursanalytischen Ansatz, der angesichts gegenwärtiger gesellschaftsübergreifender Krisenlagen eine besondere Aktualität entfaltet, um mögliche Veränderungen von Diskurs- und Kollektivformierungen untersuchen zu können.     Abstract: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in 2015 have influenced the actions of international and intergovernmental organisations and governments around the world, and have dictated priorities for international aid spending. Culture, including heritage, is often presented as fundamental to addressing the SDGs: since 2010, the United Nations has adopted no fewer than five major policy recommendations that assert its importance as a driver and enabler of development. Yet, heritage is marginalized from the Sustainable Development Goals.0Rethinking Heritage for Sustainable Development constitutes a substantial and original assessment of whether and how heritage has contributed to three key dimensions of sustainable development (namely poverty reduction, gender equality and environmental sustainability) within the context of its marginalisation from the Sustainable Development Goals and from previous international development agendas.0Sophia Labadi adopts a novel, inclusive, large-scale and systematic approach, providing the first comprehensive history of the international approaches on culture (including heritage) for development, from 1970 to the present day. This book is also the first to assess the negative and positive impacts of all the international projects implemented in sub-Saharan Africa by a consortium of UN organisations that aimed to provide evidence for the contribution of heritage for development in time for the negotiation of the SDGs. The book?s conclusions provide recommendations for rethinking heritage for development, while reflecting on the major shortcomings of the selected projects

Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen. Which plants could be found in a ninth-century monastery garden, and what is the symbolic significance of plants in secular and religious literature?     Abstract: Die Sozialisation von Emotionen ist bislang vor allem in euroamerikanischen Mittelschichten untersucht worden. Leberecht Funk analysiert in seiner sozial- und kulturanthropologischen Studie emotionale Sozialisationspraktiken bei den Tao, die auf Lanyu, einer zu Taiwan gehörenden Insel, leben. Lokalen Vorstellungen zufolge bedrohen Geister die Seelen von Kindern. Als Teil ihrer Erziehung und zu ihrem Schutz werden die Kinder einer ambivalent erscheinenden Form der Abhärtung unterzogen, die eine spezifische moralische Angst- und Scham-Disposition in ihnen hervorruft, die sie im späteren Entwicklungsverlauf überwinden müssen. Die Studie zeigt, dass die ontogenetische Entwicklung von Emotionen eine größere Plastizität aufweist als bislang in der Entwicklungspsychologie angenommen

    Abstract: This book, based on field research in the West African country of The Gambia, explores how domestic gun control is shaped by international efforts and how local actors interact with international organizations or opt not to do so. The book also shows how the question of who can have what kind of gun under what circumstances is an intrinsic question to modern societies across the world, but it is seldom one that is addressed in sub-Saharan Africa except in cases of post-conflict countries. Small arms control and gun control are often treated as separate efforts, with the former the domain of international actors such as the United Nations and the latter being of concern to the domestic politics of countries such as the United States. By focusing on a country that has never seen the outbreak of a civil war, the book is able to disentangle the complex roots of gun control in Africa, its origins in colonial era legislation, its reverberations across social life, and how it shapes contemporary understandings of groups ranging for security guards to hunters.     Abstract: 'Douglas Janoff draws from his wide-ranging diplomatic career, extensive research and rigorous scholarship to provide a highly engaging and accessible exploration of the mainstreaming, complexities and contradictions of LGBTQ+ advocacy in contemporary Western diplomacy. Janoff's book is a much-needed addition to the expanding field of queer international relations and is a thoughtful and useful contribution both for academic scholars and diplomatic practitioners' —Daniel Conway is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations, University of Westminster, UK This book is the first study of multilateral LGBT human rights diplomacy viewed from the perspective of its practitioners: diplomats, LGBT activists, human rights experts and multilateral specialists. It demonstrates how diplomats and advocates work to promote LGBT rights on the world stage, often using Western constructs of sexual and gender identity. In turn, these efforts have triggered conflict and polarization: opposing states often deploy cultural, religious and moral discourses to minimize LGBT rights as a “legitimate” human right. The author, a seasoned Canadian foreign service officer, human rights negotiator and former community activist and researcher, uses insider perspectives to critically assess both bilateral and multilateral diplomatic engagement on LGBT human rights issues. Janoff’s research involved participation in UN meetings in Geneva and New York and 29 interviews with diplomats, human rights advocates and experts, and representatives from the UN and other inter-governmental organizations. Although LGBT issues have been mainstreamed into many areas of bilateral and multilateral human rights policy, his research found a considerable gap: a coordinated diplomatic and civil society approach is needed to more effectively address ongoing human rights violations against LGBT people around the world. Douglas Victor Janoff was appointed to Canada’s Foreign Service in 2009: his career has included diplomatic postings to Washington, D.C., Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is the author of Pink Blood: Homophobic Violence in Canada (2005) and has a PhD in Canadian Studies from Carleton University, Canada.

    Abstract: Shared Margins tells of writers, writing, and literary milieus in Alexandria, Egypt's second city. It de-centres cosmopolitan avant-gardes and secular-revolutionary aesthetics that have been intensively documented and studied since 2011. Instead, it offers a fieldwork-based account of various milieus and styles, and their common grounds and lines of division. Structured in two parts, Shared Margins gives an account of literature as a social practice embedded in milieus that at once enable and limit literary imagination, and of a life-worldly experience of plurality in absence of pluralism that marks literary engagements with the intimate and social realities of Alexandria after 2011. Literary writing, this book argues, has marginality as an at once enabling and limiting condition. It provides shared spaces of imaginary excess that may go beyond the taken-for-granted of a societal milieu, and yet are never unlimited. Literary imagination is part and parcel of such social conflicts and transformations, its role being neither one of resistance against power nor of guidance towards norms, but rather one of open-ended complicity

    Abstract: The first half of the volume is devoted to the exposition of the ancient evidence, literary and iconographic, for the traditions of Heracles' life and deeds. After a chapter each on the hero's childhood and his madness, the canonical cause of his Twelve Labors, each of the Labors themselves receives detailed treatment in a dedicated chapter. The "Parerga" or "Side-Labors" are then treated in a similar level of detail in seven further chapters. In the second half, the Heracles tradition is analysed from a range of thematic perspectives. After consideration of the contrasting projections of the figure across the major literary genres, epic, tragedy, comedy, philosophy, and in the iconographic register, a number of his myth-cycle's diverse fils rouges are pursued.

    Abstract: Cultural Science introduces a new way of thinking about culture. Adopting an evolutionary and systems approach, the authors argue that culture is the population-wide source of newness and innovation; it faces the future, not the past. Its chief characteristic is the formation of groups or 'demes' (organised and productive subpopulation; 'demos'). Demes are the means for creating, distributing and growing knowledge. However, such groups are competitive and knowledge-systems are adversarial. Starting from a rereading of Darwinian evolutionary theory, the book utilises multidisciplinary resources: Raymond Williams's 'culture is ordinary' approach; evolutionary science (e.g. Mark Pagel and Herbert Gintis); semiotics (Yuri Lotman); and economic theory (from Schumpeter to McCloskey). Successive chapters argue that: -Culture and knowledge need to be understood from an externalist ('linked brains') perspective, rather than through the lens of individual behaviour; -Demes are created by culture, especially storytelling, which in turn constitutes both politics and economics; -The clash of systems -- including demes -- is productive of newness, meaningfulness and successful reproduction of culture; -Contemporary urban culture and citizenship can best be explained by investigating how culture is used, and how newness and innovation emerge from unstable and contested boundaries between different meaning systems; -The evolution of culture is a process of technologically enabled 'demic concentration' of knowledge, across overlapping meaning-systems or semiospheres; a process where the number of demes accessible to any individual has increased at an accelerating rate, resulting in new problems of scale and coordination for cultural science to address. The book argues for interdisciplinary 'consilience', linking evolutionary and complexity theory in the natural sciences, economics and anthropology in the social sciences, and cultural, communication and media studies in the humanities and creative arts. It describes what is needed for a new 'modern synthesis' for the cultural sciences. It combines analytical and historical methods, to provide a framework for a general reconceptualisation of the theory of culture - one that is focused not on its political or customary aspects but rather its evolutionary significance as a generator of newness and innovation.
