    Abstract: Materialising the Roman Empire defines an innovative research agenda for Roman archaeology, highlighting the diverse ways in which the Empire was made materially tangible in the lives of its inhabitants. The volume explores how material culture was integral to the processes of imperialism, both as the Empire grew, and as it fragmented, and in doing so provides up-to-date overviews of major topics in Roman archaeology. Each chapter offers a critical overview of a major field within the archaeology of the Roman Empire. The book’s authors explore the distinctive contribution that archaeology and the study of material culture can make to our understanding of the key institutions and fields of activity in the Roman Empire. The initial chapters address major technologies which, at first glance, appear to be mechanisms of integration across the Roman Empire: roads, writing and coinage. The focus then shifts to analysis of key social structures oriented around material forms and activities found all over the Roman world, such as trade, urbanism, slavery, craft production and frontiers. Finally, the book extends to more abstract dimensions of the Roman world: art, empire, religion and ideology, in which the significant themes remain the dynamics of power and influence. The whole builds towards a broad exploration of the nature of imperial power and the inter-connections that stimulated new community identities and created new social divisions

Jhs. belegt und gibt einen Einblick in Bestattungsbrauchtum und Beigabensitten in einer ländlichen Nekropole über mehr als 300 Jahre hindurch. Neben einer archäologisch-kulturhistorischen Auswertung beinhaltet die Arbeit naturwissenschaftliche Analysen von Textilresten, Farbpigmenten sowie menschlichen Knochen und Tierknochen.
    Abstract: Klappentext engl.: The cemetery with 208 cremations and 49 inhumations was in use from the end of the 1st Century AD until the beginning of the 5th Century AD and provides an insight into burial customs and burial rites in a rural necropolis aver a period of more than 300 years. In addition to an archaeological-cultural-historical evaluation, the work includes scientific analyses oftextile remains, colour pigments and human and animal bones.

    Abstract: There is a lack of scientifically collected data on intimate partner violence against men in Germany. The authors present findings from a quantitative, representative online survey of 1,200 men aged 18-69 on the prevalence of partner violence, its consequences, men's experiences with the support system and individual risk factors, and a qualitative interview study with 16 men who were interviewed in detail about their experiences. Finally, the study reports the results of an expert workshop in the form of recommendations and a special analysis of the Lower Saxony survey on partner violence among 15-year-old male adolescents
    Abstract: Zu Partnerschaftsgewalt gegen Männer in Deutschland liegen nur wenige wissenschaftlich ermittelte Daten vor. Die Autor:innen präsentieren Befunde einer quantitativen, deutschlandweit repräsentativen Online-Befragung von 1.200 Männern im Alter von 18 bis 69 Jahren zu Prävalenzen von Partnerschaftsgewalt und ihren Folgen. Vorgestellt werden darüber hinaus die Erfahrungen der Männer mit dem Hilfesystem und einzelnen Risikofaktoren sowie eine qualitative Interviewstudie, bei der 16 Männer detailliert zu ihren Erfahrungen befragt wurden.     Abstract: Zur Bewältigung von Organisierter (Drogen)Kriminalität finden zeitlich und finanziell aufwändige, meist verdeckte Ermittlungen gegen eine Vielzahl von Akteuren statt. Um diese Hintergrundermittlungen nicht vorzeitig aufzudecken, wird die sog. ›Legendierte Kontrolle‹ eingesetzt, bei der die Ermittlungsbehörden eine Durchsuchung als allgemeine Verkehrskontrolle tarnen. Die Arbeit ordnet das Instrument in das bestehende System verdeckter und täuschender Ermittlungsmaßnahmen ein. Sie analysiert die verfassungs- und strafverfahrensrechtliche Zulässigkeit des staatlichen Vorgehens, das sich im Grenzbereich zwischen Gefahrenabwehr und Strafverfolgung bewegt. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Frage, ob entgegen dem Grundsatz der Aktenwahrheit eine legendierte, also unzutreffende oder unvollständige Aktenführung erlaubt sein kann. Die allermeisten Menschen, die sich hin zu einer solchen Gewaltbereitschaft radikalisieren, begehen allerdings keine Gewalttat. Daher wird zweitens dargelegt, unter welchen Bedingungen diese ideologiebasierte Gewaltbereitschaft in einer konkreten Gewalthandlung in Westeuropa gipfelt. Das entwickelte Erklärungsmodell wird im Anschluss empirisch überprüft. Der Fokus richtet sich dabei insbesondere auf die theoretisch formulierten Bedingungen der Tatbegehung.     Abstract: Wozu brauchten Fürsten »Zwerge« und was taten diese Kleinwüchsigen an einem Hof? Eva Seemann widmet diesem fast vergessenen Hofamt erstmals eine eigene Studie. An den Fürstenhöfen der Frühen Neuzeit waren »Hofzwerge« weit verbreitet. Was aus heutiger Perspektive befremdlich erscheinen mag, war an vielen Höfen bis weit ins 18. Jahrhundert fest etabliert: Sich mit einem oder mehreren »Zwergen« zu umgeben, gehörte für Fürsten und Adlige in ganz Europa zu den Ansprüchen an eine standesgemäße Hofhaltung. Kleinwüchsige Menschen bekleideten als »Kammerzwerge« nicht selten ein eigenes Hofamt, fungierten als Leibdiener, Unterhalter, Spielgefährten, Boten und Vertraute und konnten bisweilen zu einflussreichen Persönlichkeiten werden. Eva Seemann untersucht dieses bisher wenig beachtete Phänomen anhand der deutschen Höfe erstmals in einer eigenen Studie. An der Schnittstelle von Hofgeschichte und Disability History werden so Fragen nach Zugehörigkeit und Ausgrenzung sowie der ambivalente Umgang der frühneuzeitlichen Gesellschaft mit körperlicher Andersheit problematisiert.     Abstract: Why do certain parts of the state in Africa work so effectively despite operating in difficult governance contexts? How do 'pockets of bureaucratic effectiveness' emerge and become sustained over time? And what does this tell us about the prospects for state-building and development in Africa? Repeated economic and social crises have demanded that development thinkers and policy actors have had to engage with the critical role that states play in delivering development. Pockets of Effectiveness and the Politics of State-building and Development in Africa shows that politics is the driving factor that shapes how well state agencies perform their roles. It deploys a new conceptual framework – the power domains approach – to explore the shifting fortunes of key state agencies in five countries – Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia – over the past three decades. Our original research reveals when, how and why political rulers decide to build effective state agencies and enable them to deliver certain forms of economic development – often through forming strategic coalitions with senior bureaucrats and with international support – and also when this support falters and gives way to a politics of survival. Comparative analysis identifies two potential trajectories towards state-building in Africa, each shaped by different configurations of social and political power. The book critiques the role that international development agencies have played in (mis)shaping the state in Africa and suggests a new strategic agenda for building the state capacities required to deliver sustained development at the current juncture. The book closes with critical commentaries from two leading scholars in the field, to help place our work in context and establish the next steps for research and strategy in this increasingly important area of development theory and practice

    Abstract: Der Band widmet sich der ideologiekritischen Rekonstruktion des antisemitischen Bewusstseins und der historischen Darstellung der Modifikationen antisemitischer Äußerungsformen, um davon ausgehend Bedingungen und Möglichkeiten für eine gegenwartsbezogene Kritik des Antisemitismus auszuloten. Ausgehend vom kategorischen Imperativ Adornos verbindet der Band theoretische Analysen mit praxisbezogenen Überlegungen zur Bekämpfung des Antisemitismus in all seinen aktuellen Erscheinungsformen. Ein besonderer Fokus wird auf den israelbezogenen und islamistischen Antisemitismus gerichtet. Prof. Dr. Stephan Grigat leitet das Centrum für Antisemitismus- und Rassismusstudien (CARS) in Aachen, in dessen Kontext die Beiträge entstanden sind.     Abstract: This study addresses the phenomenon of domestic burglary (§ 244 (1) No. 3, (4) German Criminal Code). Particular emphasis is placed on the realities of criminal sentencing for this offense. Based on a multi-perspective analysis of the various appearances of the phenomenon and its legal classification, the study examines the reform of § 244 GCC and the realities of sentencing in criminal courts for the offense. In particular, discrepancies in sentencing that cannot be adequately explained by differences in factual circumstances of the underlying cases, and deficits in the written reasons for sentencing decisions are highlighted. The study reveals a need for action in the field of criminal sentencing
    Abstract: Das Werk widmet sich dem (Privat-)Wohnungseinbruchdiebstahl nach § 244 Abs. 1 Nr. 3, Abs. 4 StGB. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Rechtswirklichkeit der Strafzumessung bei dem Delikt. Auf Grundlage einer multiperspektivischen Betrachtung der Erscheinungsformen des Phänomens und seiner rechtlichen Bewertung untersucht die Arbeit die Reform des Tatbestandes und die Praxis der tatgerichtlichen Strafzumessung bei dem Delikt. Insbesondere werden Unterschiede im Strafmaß, die nicht hinreichend durch Sachverhaltsunterschiede der zugrundeliegenden Fälle erklärt werden können, sowie Defizite in der Begründung der Strafzumessungsentscheidungen aufgezeigt. Die Arbeit legt einen Handlungsbedarf im Strafzumessungsrecht offen

    Abstract: Describing the Holy Roman Empire after 1250 as a hopeless dream or an empty formula only Roman in name, historians have long minimized the impact of the imperial presence in late-medieval Italy. The nationalist historiography, on which we still largely depend, presented the Empire as alien to the very essence of humanism and modernity. Associating humanism with republicanism, scholars silently suggested that the belief in the peace-bringing emperor faded away as the Renaissance unfolded. No real humanist, so it was believed, could genuinely support the medieval construct that was the Holy Roman Empire. Only recently has this historiographical framework really been challenged. The present volume builds further on the thesis that humanism was perfectly compatible with imperialist political ideals. It aims to bring together new perspectives on empire and emperors in Italy and to highlight the continuing importance of the imperial ideal throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth century. It focuses on imperial discourses in the writings of Italian historians, humanists, poets, jurists and notaries. The imitation of Roman emperors is both a sign of the Renaissance and a central aspect in medieval political thought. It may, therefore, not surprise that the descent of the "king of the Romans" into Italy attracted the attention of Italians with humanist tastes. The name of empire aroused high expectations. Orations, histories, treatises, and letters show that many still generally accepted the legitimacy of the empire and considered the contemporary Holy Roman Emperor as the lawful leader of the Christian world

Angesichts aktueller Überlegungen Smart Speaker auch im Rahmen der Strafverfolgung einzusetzen, dürfte es nur noch eine Frage der Zeit sein, bis diese auch die höchstrichterliche Rechtsprechung beschäftigen. These developments have sometimes been referred to as marking an 'agricultural revolution', yet the nature and timing of these critical changes remain subject to intense debate, despite more than a century of research. The papers in this volume demonstrate how the combined application of cutting-edge scientific analyses, along with new theoretical models and challenges to conventional understandings, can reveal trajectories of agricultural development which, while complementary overall, do not indicate a single period of change involving the extension of arable, the introduction of the mouldboard plough, and regular crop rotation.     Abstract: At the turn of the twenty-first century, Xiamen’s pursuit of World Heritage Site designation from UNESCO stimulated considerable interest in the city’s Christian past. History enthusiasts, both Christian and non-Christian, devoted themselves to reinterpreting the legacy of missionaries and challenged official narratives of Christianity’s troubled associations with Western imperialism. In this book, Jifeng Liu documents the tension that has inevitably emerged between the established official history and these popular efforts.This volume elucidates the ways in which Christianity has become an integral part of Xiamen, a Chinese city profoundly influenced by Western missionaries. Drawing on extensive interviews, locally produced histories, and observations of historical celebrations, Liu provides an intimate portrait of the people who navigate ideological issues to reconstruct a Christian past, reproduce religious histories, and redefine local power structures in the shadow of the state. Liu makes a compelling argument that a Christian past is being constructed that combines official frameworks, unofficial practices, and nostalgia into social memory, a realm of dynamic negotiation that is neither dominated by the authoritarian state nor characterized by popular resistance.     Abstract: Clachtoll broch is one of the most spectacular Iron Age settlements on the northern mainland of Scotland. When it became clear that the structure was threatened by coastal erosion, community heritage group Historic Assynt launched a major program of conservation and excavation works designed to secure the vulnerable structure and recover the archaeological evidence of its occupation and use. The resulting excavation provided evidence of a long and complex history of construction and rebuilding, with the final, middle Iron Age occupation phase ending in a catastrophic fire and collapse of the tower by the early years of the first century AD. The internal deposits span perhaps 50 years of the brochsquo;s final occupation and were remarkably well preserved, with no evidence for secondary re-use or disturbance after the fire. As a result, the excavation provides a remarkable snapshot of life in Iron Age Scotland, with an artifact assemblage attesting to daily agricultural life as well as long-range contacts that sets the broch within a wider Atlantic community. Specialist analysis of the artifactual and palaeoenvironmental evidence coupled with detailed analysis of the structure in its local geographical context combine to provide a major new contribution to the archaeology of north-west Scotland, with wider implications for our understanding of late prehistoric society in northern Britain.This report comprises the results of the archaeological investigations at Clachtoll, compiled by a team of archaeologists and specialists from AOC Archaeology Group, and brings together evidence from a range of specialist analyses as well as environmental and landscape investigations

    Abstract: La colonie grecque d'Agathé, établie par les Phocéens de Marseille, déjà citée par des auteurs de l'Antiquité, a fait couler beaucoup d'encre parmi les historiens modernes qui cherchaient surtout sa localisation précise et sa date de fondation. Les premières recherches de terrain de Raymond Aris à la fin des années 1930, puis les travaux d'André Nickels dans les années 1970-1980 ont permis de confirmer la présence de la ville antique sous le site de la ville actuelle d'Agde, et de mieux connaître la vie de ses habitants. Ils ont également occasionné la découverte des deux nécropoles se rapportant à cet établissement : le Peyrou 2, fort de trente-cinq tombes s'échelonnant entre l'extrême fin du Ve siècle et le milieu du IIe siècle av.     Abstract: L'oppidum des Caisses de Jean-Jean (Mouriès, Bouches-du- Rhône) et son faubourg des Petites Caisses constituent un des sites archéologiques majeurs de la région du Bas-Rhône et d'une façon plus générale de la Provence. Le site se caractérise par son étendue, la durée prolongée de son occupation (de la fin du VIIIe s. av. J.-C. à celle du IIIe s. ap. J.-C.) et par son puissant système défensif le singularisant par rapport à la plupart des oppida régionaux aux fortifications généralement plus simples et de moindre durée. Déjà naturellement protégé par de hautes falaises, il était aussi défendu par plusieurs remparts. La fouille du rempart principal de l'oppidum, abordée entre 1939 et 1942 par Fernand Benoit, a été reprise depuis le début des années 2000, en mettant en évidence la juxtaposition de plusieurs de ses états successifs (entre le VIe et le Ier s. av. J.-C.). Elle a été complétée par d'autres recherches sur ses défenses avancées (fossés et agger, « chevaux-de-frise », avant-mur) ainsi que sur d'autres murailles jusqu'alors inconnues du faubourg méridional. Le présent ouvrage constitue le bilan de ces travaux, qui renouvellent considérablement les connaissances jusqu'alors disponibles pour l'étude des fortifications protohistoriques provençales. Chaque rempart a fait l'objet d'un étude archéologique et architecturale détaillée. Certaines questions ayant fait débat (remploi de stèles dans les remparts, tertre de cendre, « chevaux-de- frise ») sont examinées en cours d'exposé. La synthèse finale replace, grâce à de multiples comparaisons, ce puissant et complexe système défensif dans l'ensemble des fortifications de l'âge du Fer en Gaule méditerranéenne, et évalue la part respective des modes de construction traditionnels, des capacités d'innovation des constructeurs et des emprunts aux modèles étrangers

Idéalement située dans l'environnement varié à proximité de l'étang de Berre, de la plaine de la Crau, des zones humides de Camargue et de la Méditerranée, cette agglomération a su tirer parti des ressources naturelles disponibles et de sa proximité avec le port antique de Fos, lieu d'échange des produits du commerce maritime. Les bâtiments, leurs aménagements et le mobilier révèlent la vie quotidienne et les pratiques culturelles d'une population gauloise rurale. La découverte de deux sépultures et d'un bûcher placés au plus près des vivants témoigne également des coutumes funéraires locales. Au total, ces investigations renouvellent profondément notre vision de l'occupation du territoire et des modes de peuplement à l'ouest de l'étang de Berte. Aux villae, établissements et bergeries viennent désormais s'ajourer de petites agglomérations qui trouvent leur place dans le maillage territorial

It was led in politics and the media just as in academia. The economic usefulness of the Euro has been discussed, and the political implications of a fostered European unification. Most often, the state of Europeanization has been presented as being without alternatives: no Europe without Greece; no Euro without Greece; no way back to the nation state in its old form. As a result, the debate on Europe was largely narrowed down to the very questions of the immediate crisis, namely economics and fi nance. Only a few voices held that the crisis in fact was one of politics, not of economics. And only late did politicians mention again that Europe is more than the EU. Alternative views of Europe, however, were scarce and often presented full of consequences. It thus came without much surprise that the lacking imaginative power of politicians as well as intellectuals was criticized. The idea for this volume sprang from that situation. The editors invited scholars from various disciplines to present them with ways of imagining Europe that go beyond the rather limited view of EU institutions. How was, how is Europe imagined? Which memories are evoked, which visions explicated? Which counter-narratives to prominent discourses are there?

A State of Play explores how the British have imagined their politics, from the parliament worship of Anthony Trollope to the cynicism of The Thick of It. In an account that mixes historical with political analysis, Steven Fielding argues that fictional depictions of politics have played an important but insidious part in shaping how the British think about their democracy and have helped ventilate their many frustrations with Westminster. He shows that dramas and fictions have also performed a significant role in the battle of ideas, in a way undreamt of by those who draft party manifestos. The book examines the work of overtly political writers have treated the subject, discussing the novels of H.G. Wells, the comedy series Yes, Minister and the plays of David Hare. However, it also assesses how less obvious sources, such as the films of George Formby, the novels of Agatha Christie, the Just William stories and situation comedies like Steptoe and Son, have reflected on representative democracy. In order to think theoretically about our global age it is important to understand how the global has been conceived historically. 'Eurafrica' was an intellectual endeavor and political project that from the 1920s saw Europe's future survival - its continued role in history - as completely bound up with Europe's successful merger with Africa. In its time the concept of Eurafrica was tremendously influential in the process of European integration. Today the project is largely forgotten, yet the idea continues to influence EU policy towards its African 'partner'. The book will recover a critical conception of the nexus between Europe and Africa - a relationship of significance across the humanities and social sciences. In assessing this historical concept the authors shed light on the process of European integration, African decolonization and the current conflictual relationship between Europe and Africa

    Abstract: In diesem von der Bundestagsfraktion Bündnis 90/Die Grünen in Auftrag gegebenem ergebnisoffenem Gutachten untersucht Prof. Spindler die rechtliche und ökonomische Umsetzbarkeit sowie Ausgestaltung eines Ansatzes zur sog. „Kulturflatrate“. Die Fragestellung war, ob ein Pauschalvergütungsansatz auf Breitbandanschlüsse ein Baustein für ein gerechteres, modernes Urheberrecht, für angemessene Vergütung für die UrheberInnen und einen gesellschaftlichen Interessensausgleich sein kann. Das umfassende und detailreiche Gutachten leistet einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Diskussion um die Zukunft des Urheberrechts, die in Zeiten des globalen Internets in praktisch jedem Land geführt wird. Es wird vollumfänglich der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht, damit die Ergebnisse von allen Interessierten genutzt und weiterentwickelt werden können. Prof. Spindler zeigt in seinem Gutachten auf, dass ein Pauschalvergütungsansatz verfassungsrechtlich zulässig und ein attraktives Modell zur angemessenen Vergütung für Kreative sein kann. Für die Situation der NutzerInnen bietet er eine geeignete Alternative zu repressiven und gesellschaftlich höchst konfliktträchtigen Formen der Rechtsdurchsetzung. Gleichzeitig wird aber auch auf gewichtige Schwierigkeiten und Hürden bei der Umsetzung eines solchen Modells hingewiesen. Das Gutachten und dieser Text erschienen zunächst unter der Creative Commons Lizenz BY-NC-ND auf der Internetpräsenz der Bundestagsfraktion von Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen.     Abstract: The Internet and the proceeding digitalisation of content - such as music, videos and written texts - have led to profound and complex challenges in the field of Copyright Law, especially with regard to questions of enforcement as well as adequate compensation of right holders. In recent years, several alternative compensation schemes have been proposed, seeking to solve these issues. In Germany, the discussion still focuses on the so-called "cultural flatrate", that is, in a nutshell, a limitation to copyrights which would legalize sharing of content online. Every holder of a broadband connection to the Internet would have to pay a monthly fee which would be used to remunerate the right holders.This advisory opinion was compiled on behalf of the parliamentary group of the German political party "Bündnis 90/DIE GRÜNEN". The author comprehensively analyses the feasibility of the described alternative compensation scheme under German and European law, discussing both legal and economic obstacles and possible impacts based on a variety of different economic prerequisites

Kontrovers diskutiert wird, wie das Grundanliegen des Betäubungsmittelrechts — Schutz der Bevölkerung vor Abhängigkeit und Missbrauch sowie Sicherstellung der notwendigen medizinischen Versorgung — mit dem palliativmedizinischen Selbstverständnis der Gewährung einer bestmöglichen Behandlung von Schmerzpatienten in Einklang gebracht werden kann. In diesem Spannungsfeld fasst der Band die Beiträge eines Expertenworkshops zusammen, der 2012 von der Klinik für Palliativmedizin sowie dem Zentrum für Medizinrecht der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen veranstaltet wurde.     Abstract: The meeting of members of different cultures, frequently conceptualized in abstract terms, always involves the meeting of human bodies. This volume brings together contributions by scholars of various disciplines that address physical aspects and effects of cultural encounters in historical and present-day settings. Bodies were and are not only markers of cultural identity and difference, endlessly inscribed and represented as the ‘body politic’ or ‘the exotic other’; as battlegrounds of cross-cultural signification and identification bodies are also potential agents of change. While some essays address the elusiveness of the ‘real’ or material body, forever lost behind a veil of textual and visual representation, others analyze the performative effect of such representations – their function of disciplining colonized bodies and subjects by integrating them into Western systems of cultural signification and scientific classification. Yet, as the volume also shows, formerly colonized people, far from subjecting themselves completely to Western discourses of physical discipline, retain traditional body practices – whether in food culture, religious ritual, or musical performances. Such local reinscriptions escape the grip of Western culture and transform the global semantics of the body

Im Anschluss wurde der Frage nachgegangen,ob und inwieweit das Betreuungsrecht als Vorbild für das neue Vormundschaftsrechtherangezogen werden kann (Dieter Schwab). Einen Perspektivwechsel wegvom Gesetzgeber und hin zum Mündel forderte der nachfolgende Beitrag, der dieAuswahl des passenden Vormunds für den individuellen Mündel thematisierte (BarbaraSeidenstücker). Abschließend wurden die strukturellen Probleme auf Seiten derJugendämter aufgezeigt (Hans-Werner Pütz) und das im Gesetzgebungsverfahrenvernachlässigte Problem beleuchtet, welche Konsequenzen sich aus dem Gesetzentwurffür die Ergänzungspflegschaft ergeben (Thomas Meysen)

Die Gesellschaft und ihr Recht ignorieren diese Variabilitäten jenseits der natürlichen Geschlechtlichkeit jedoch mit Blick auf Orientierungsbedürfnisse weitgehend: Familien- und personenstandsrechtliche Zuschreibungen müssen eindeutig sein, Veränderungen des biologischen Geschlechts kommen nur in seltenen Ausnahmefällen in Betracht, die gesellschaftlichen Vorstellungen über den Freiraum an „sexueller Selbstbestimmung“ werden an den Grenzen strafrechtlich abgesichert und jene, die sich nicht daran halten, gelten in der Rechtspraxis entweder als schuldfähig oder haben mit u.U. langjährigem Freiheitsentzug im Rahmen der Sicherungsverwahrung zu rechnen. Dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen individueller Disposition und gesellschaftlicher Erwartung war Gegenstand eines Workshops, der am 20. November 2009 gemeinsam vom Institut für Humangenetik der Universitätsmedizin Göttingen und dem Zentrum für Medizinrecht der Juristischen Fakultät veranstaltet wurde. Der vorliegende Band enthält die Resultate eines interdisziplinären Dialogs von Experten/Innen aus der Humangenetik, der Sexualforschung, der Soziologie, des Medizinrechts und der forensischen Psychiatrie

    Abstract: This book focuses on one of the prime movers in the unification of Lunigiana – a region which at the time was still broken up into a myriad of tiny feudal holdings, almost all in the hands of the various branches of the Malaspina family. The process of unification began in the fifteenth century, when various areas of the region were conquered by Milan and Florence, which also divided between them the hegemony of the remaining independent territories, while Genoa too displayed an interest in expansion in the region. As a result it became crucial for the local lords to manoeuvre between the various forces at play to maintain the independence of their own little states. Among the figures who displayed the greatest dexterity in this was Gabriele Malaspina, who became a leading player on the stage of local history. The book starts by illustrating the period in which Malaspina succeeded in obtaining his political independence, and then goes on to analyse the phase in which his policy came to be characterised by an absolute loyalty to Florence. Finally the book addresses the last part of the Marquis's life, marked by a progressive distancing from the Florentine alliance in favour of other entities, in which he nevertheless always succeeded in maintaining his independence

    Abstract: This book is a collection of seven essays with an introduction by the editor. The contributions propose first-hand studies of some of the less researched aspects of the history of the Italian communes: the practices of conflict, vendetta and pacification. The variety of different ways of resolving conflicts brought to light by the studies for the various civic and rural contexts (Mantua, Parma, Pisa, Lucca, Florence and the Valdinievole), between the beginning of the thirteenth and the mid fourteenth century, indicate how normal such social relations were, the widespread nature of the feud and the legitimisation and centrality of the culture of the vendetta within the political arena of the commune. The book hence offers a precious contribution for a review of the prevalent narration of the vendetta in late mediaeval Italian society

    Abstract: In April 1479, the communities of the marquisate of Mantua pronounced for the first time a general oath of fealty to Federico Gonzaga, the third marquis, inaugurating a custom that was to be repeated with relative regularity in the following decades every time a Prince died. It was a practice which was fairly new for the Gonzago marquisate, at least in this capillary and general extension to the entire body of the State. The significance of an innovation of this kind deserves attention, as do the genesis and the partial forms that preceded this mature expression.     Abstract: The different written and archaeological sources give a very heterogeneous picture of the social and religious structures in Eastern Middle Europe. Recent developments in modern archaeological and historical research have shown new approaches to the analysis of elites. In every society there is a leading minority, who cumulates both wealth and prestige and is characterized by an elevated social rank, reputation and acceptance. An external marker of these elites is especially the superregional transfer of certain items, but also of the culturally encoded value systems. The present study asks whether this notion of cultural transfer, developed in the context of modern history, can be applied as well to the study of mutual influences between the elites of medieval Western and Eastern Middle Europe. It also raises the question if this terminology is equally useful for the analysis of written and material sources, and to what extent it might open a new perspective on the rich but as yet often unexplored history of the lands east of the Elbe river.〈p〉So unterschiedlich Schriftquellen und Bodenfunde des östlichen Mitteleuropas auch Zeugnis ablegen, so stimmen sie darin überein, ein sehr heterogenes Bild von der inneren gesellschaftlichen und religiösen Struktur der gentes zu liefern. Die gegenwärtige Entwicklung in der Archäologie und Geschichtswissenschaft zeigt neue Betrachtungsweisen in der Untersuchung von Eliten. In jeder Gesellschaft existiert eine Reichtum und Prestige auf sich ziehende führende Minderheit: Sie wird durch eine hohe soziale Position gekennzeichnet, aber auch durch Ansehen und Anerkennung. Als äußeres Kennzeichen der Eliten zeichnet sich dabei besonders der überregionale Transfer einzelner Güter und ihrer kulturell kodierten Wertsysteme ab. Doch eignet sich die eigentlich an neuzeitlichen Verhältnissen entwickelte Vorstellung des Kulturtransfers auch zur Untersuchung wechselseitiger Beeinflussungen der Eliten des westlichen und östlichen Mitteleuropas im Mittelalter? Ist es gleichermaßen für die Untersuchung schriftlicher wie materieller Quellen geeignet? Öffnet es einen neuen Blick auf die reiche, überbordende und zugleich noch vielfach verschlossene Geschichte des Raumes östlich der Elbe?
