    Abstract: Materialising the Roman Empire defines an innovative research agenda for Roman archaeology, highlighting the diverse ways in which the Empire was made materially tangible in the lives of its inhabitants. The volume explores how material culture was integral to the processes of imperialism, both as the Empire grew, and as it fragmented, and in doing so provides up-to-date overviews of major topics in Roman archaeology. Each chapter offers a critical overview of a major field within the archaeology of the Roman Empire. The book’s authors explore the distinctive contribution that archaeology and the study of material culture can make to our understanding of the key institutions and fields of activity in the Roman Empire. The initial chapters address major technologies which, at first glance, appear to be mechanisms of integration across the Roman Empire: roads, writing and coinage. The focus then shifts to analysis of key social structures oriented around material forms and activities found all over the Roman world, such as trade, urbanism, slavery, craft production and frontiers. Finally, the book extends to more abstract dimensions of the Roman world: art, empire, religion and ideology, in which the significant themes remain the dynamics of power and influence. The whole builds towards a broad exploration of the nature of imperial power and the inter-connections that stimulated new community identities and created new social divisions

    Abstract: There is a lack of scientifically collected data on intimate partner violence against men in Germany. The authors present findings from a quantitative, representative online survey of 1,200 men aged 18-69 on the prevalence of partner violence, its consequences, men's experiences with the support system and individual risk factors, and a qualitative interview study with 16 men who were interviewed in detail about their experiences.     Abstract: Zu Partnerschaftsgewalt gegen Männer in Deutschland liegen nur wenige wissenschaftlich ermittelte Daten vor. Die Autor:innen präsentieren Befunde einer quantitativen, deutschlandweit repräsentativen Online-Befragung von 1.200 Männern im Alter von 18 bis 69 Jahren zu Prävalenzen von Partnerschaftsgewalt und ihren Folgen. Vorgestellt werden darüber hinaus die Erfahrungen der Männer mit dem Hilfesystem und einzelnen Risikofaktoren sowie eine qualitative Interviewstudie, bei der 16 Männer detailliert zu ihren Erfahrungen befragt wurden.     Abstract: Zur Bewältigung von Organisierter (Drogen)Kriminalität finden zeitlich und finanziell aufwändige, meist verdeckte Ermittlungen gegen eine Vielzahl von Akteuren statt. Um diese Hintergrundermittlungen nicht vorzeitig aufzudecken, wird die sog. ›Legendierte Kontrolle‹ eingesetzt, bei der die Ermittlungsbehörden eine Durchsuchung als allgemeine Verkehrskontrolle tarnen. Die Arbeit ordnet das Instrument in das bestehende System verdeckter und täuschender Ermittlungsmaßnahmen ein. Sie analysiert die verfassungs- und strafverfahrensrechtliche Zulässigkeit des staatlichen Vorgehens, das sich im Grenzbereich zwischen Gefahrenabwehr und Strafverfolgung bewegt. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Frage, ob entgegen dem Grundsatz der Aktenwahrheit eine legendierte, also unzutreffende oder unvollständige Aktenführung erlaubt sein kann.     Abstract: Dieses Open-Access-Buch behandelt die Frage, wie und warum es dazu kommt, dass Menschen schwere islamistische Gewalttaten, etwa in Form terroristischer Anschläge oder gewaltsamer Hasskriminalität, in Westeuropa begehen wollen. Das im Rahmen des Buches entwickelte Erklärungsmodell nähert sich der Beantwortung dieser Frage in zwei Schritten: erstens wird erklärt, wie und warum Menschen überhaupt bereit werden, im Namen einer Ideologie zu töten. Die allermeisten Menschen, die sich hin zu einer solchen Gewaltbereitschaft radikalisieren, begehen allerdings keine Gewalttat. Daher wird zweitens dargelegt, unter welchen Bedingungen diese ideologiebasierte Gewaltbereitschaft in einer konkreten Gewalthandlung in Westeuropa gipfelt. Das entwickelte Erklärungsmodell wird im Anschluss empirisch überprüft. Der Fokus richtet sich dabei insbesondere auf die theoretisch formulierten Bedingungen der Tatbegehung.     Abstract: Wozu brauchten Fürsten »Zwerge« und was taten diese Kleinwüchsigen an einem Hof? Eva Seemann widmet diesem fast vergessenen Hofamt erstmals eine eigene Studie. An den Fürstenhöfen der Frühen Neuzeit waren »Hofzwerge« weit verbreitet. Was aus heutiger Perspektive befremdlich erscheinen mag, war an vielen Höfen bis weit ins 18. Jahrhundert fest etabliert: Sich mit einem oder mehreren »Zwergen« zu umgeben, gehörte für Fürsten und Adlige in ganz Europa zu den Ansprüchen an eine standesgemäße Hofhaltung. Kleinwüchsige Menschen bekleideten als »Kammerzwerge« nicht selten ein eigenes Hofamt, fungierten als Leibdiener, Unterhalter, Spielgefährten, Boten und Vertraute und konnten bisweilen zu einflussreichen Persönlichkeiten werden. Eva Seemann untersucht dieses bisher wenig beachtete Phänomen anhand der deutschen Höfe erstmals in einer eigenen Studie. An der Schnittstelle von Hofgeschichte und Disability History werden so Fragen nach Zugehörigkeit und Ausgrenzung sowie der ambivalente Umgang der frühneuzeitlichen Gesellschaft mit körperlicher Andersheit problematisiert. Auf breiter Quellenbasis und in akteurszentrierter und praxeologischer Perspektive fragt sie nach der Bedeutung dieses Hofamtes für das Funktionieren des frühneuzeitlichen Fürstenhofes, aber auch nach den Lebensbedingungen und Handlungsräumen der oftmals zu Unrecht bemitleideten Kleinwüchsigen am Hof

    Abstract: It is hardly known that the brothers Jacob Grimm (1785–1883) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859) drew intensively from their earliest childhood. This publication is devoted to their hitherto unexplored childhood and youth drawings as well as those of their siblings Carl, Charlotte, Ludwig Emil Grimm and their descendants. These are sketchbooks, drawing sheets and small watercolours, among which are also extraordinary studies of nature. Individual studies make these hitherto scarcely accessible documents of bourgeois children's and youth culture from the first half of the 19th century accessible in their contexts and at the same time open up the archival holdings of the Grimm Collection of the City of Kassel. Particular emphasis is placed on the realities of criminal sentencing for this offense. Based on a multi-perspective analysis of the various appearances of the phenomenon and its legal classification, the study examines the reform of § 244 GCC and the realities of sentencing in criminal courts for the offense. In particular, discrepancies in sentencing that cannot be adequately explained by differences in factual circumstances of the underlying cases, and deficits in the written reasons for sentencing decisions are highlighted.     Abstract: Describing the Holy Roman Empire after 1250 as a hopeless dream or an empty formula only Roman in name, historians have long minimized the impact of the imperial presence in late-medieval Italy. The nationalist historiography, on which we still largely depend, presented the Empire as alien to the very essence of humanism and modernity. Associating humanism with republicanism, scholars silently suggested that the belief in the peace-bringing emperor faded away as the Renaissance unfolded. No real humanist, so it was believed, could genuinely support the medieval construct that was the Holy Roman Empire. Only recently has this historiographical framework really been challenged. The present volume builds further on the thesis that humanism was perfectly compatible with imperialist political ideals. It aims to bring together new perspectives on empire and emperors in Italy and to highlight the continuing importance of the imperial ideal throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth century. It focuses on imperial discourses in the writings of Italian historians, humanists, poets, jurists and notaries. The imitation of Roman emperors is both a sign of the Renaissance and a central aspect in medieval political thought. It may, therefore, not surprise that the descent of the "king of the Romans" into Italy attracted the attention of Italians with humanist tastes. The name of empire aroused high expectations. Orations, histories, treatises, and letters show that many still generally accepted the legitimacy of the empire and considered the contemporary Holy Roman Emperor as the lawful leader of the Christian world

    Abstract: En 1842, des archéologues français entament des fouilles aux environs de Mossoul pour retrouver Ninive, la célèbre ville biblique. L’entreprise est couronnée de succès : ils exhument des palais anciens et de nombreuses inscriptions en écriture « cunéiforme ».     Abstract: Velar Fronting (VF) is the name for any synchronic or diachronic phonological process shifting the velar place of articulation to the palatal region of the vocal tract. A well-known case of VF in Standard German is the rule specifying that the fricative [x] assimilates to [ç] after front segments. VF also refers to the change from velar sounds like [ɣ k g ŋ] to palatals ([ʝ c ɟ ɲ]). The book provides a thorough investigation of VF in German dialects: Data are drawn from over 300 original sources for varieties that are (or were) spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries. VF differs geographically along three parameters: (A) triggers, (B) targets, and (C) outputs. VF triggers (=A) are typically defined according to vowel height: In some systems VF is induced only by high front vowels, in others by high and mid front vowels, and in yet others by high, mid, and low front vowels. Some varieties treat consonants ([r l n]) as triggers, while others do not. VF can be nonassimilatory, in which case the rule applies even in the context of back segments. In many varieties of German, VF targets (=B) consist of the two fricatives [x ɣ], but in other dialects the targets comprise [x] but not [ɣ]. In some places, VF affects not only [x ɣ], but also velar stops and the velar nasal. The output of VF (=C) is typically palatal [ç] (given the input [x]), but in many other places it is the alveolopalatal [ɕ]. A major theme is the way in which VF interacts with synchronic and diachronic changes creating or eliminating structures which can potentially undergo it or trigger it. In many dialects the relationship between velars ([x]) and palatals ([ҫ]) is transparent because velars only occur in the back vowel context and palatals only when adjacent to front sounds. In that type of system, independent processes can either feed VF (by creating additional structures which the latter can undergo), or they can bleed it (by eliminating potential structures to which VF could apply). In other dialects, VF is opaque. In one opaque system, both velars ([x]) and palatals ([ҫ]) surface in the context of front segments. Thus, in addition to expected front vowel plus palatal sequences ([…iç…]), there are also unexpected ones consisting of front vowel plus velar ([…ix…]). In a second type of opaque system, velars and palatals are found in the context of back segments; hence, expected sequences such as […iç…] occur in addition to unexpected ones like […ɑç…]

    Abstract: Clachtoll broch is one of the most spectacular Iron Age settlements on the northern mainland of Scotland. When it became clear that the structure was threatened by coastal erosion, community heritage group Historic Assynt launched a major program of conservation and excavation works designed to secure the vulnerable structure and recover the archaeological evidence of its occupation and use. The resulting excavation provided evidence of a long and complex history of construction and rebuilding, with the final, middle Iron Age occupation phase ending in a catastrophic fire and collapse of the tower by the early years of the first century AD. The internal deposits span perhaps 50 years of the brochsquo;s final occupation and were remarkably well preserved, with no evidence for secondary re-use or disturbance after the fire. As a result, the excavation provides a remarkable snapshot of life in Iron Age Scotland, with an artifact assemblage attesting to daily agricultural life as well as long-range contacts that sets the broch within a wider Atlantic community. Specialist analysis of the artifactual and palaeoenvironmental evidence coupled with detailed analysis of the structure in its local geographical context combine to provide a major new contribution to the archaeology of north-west Scotland, with wider implications for our understanding of late prehistoric society in northern Britain.This report comprises the results of the archaeological investigations at Clachtoll, compiled by a team of archaeologists and specialists from AOC Archaeology Group, and brings together evidence from a range of specialist analyses as well as environmental and landscape investigations

    Abstract: La colonie grecque d'Agathé, établie par les Phocéens de Marseille, déjà citée par des auteurs de l'Antiquité, a fait couler beaucoup d'encre parmi les historiens modernes qui cherchaient surtout sa localisation précise et sa date de fondation. Les premières recherches de terrain de Raymond Aris à la fin des années 1930, puis les travaux d'André Nickels dans les années 1970-1980 ont permis de confirmer la présence de la ville antique sous le site de la ville actuelle d'Agde, et de mieux connaître la vie de ses habitants. Ils ont également occasionné la découverte des deux nécropoles se rapportant à cet établissement : le Peyrou 2, fort de trente-cinq tombes s'échelonnant entre l'extrême fin du Ve siècle et le milieu du IIe siècle av. J.-C., et Saint-André, avec seulement deux tombes conservées de la seconde moitié du IIe siècle av. J.-C. Cet ouvrage étudie de manière détaillée ces sépultures et leur aménagement. Il fait une large place aux défunts eux-mêmes, et aux objets qui accompagnent certains d'entre eux. Il met ainsi en lumière des pratiques funéraires révélatrices de coutumes grecques, très différentes de celles du monde gaulois environnant. Fort proches de ceux de Marseille/Massalia, comparables à ceux d'Ampurias/Emporion, ces usages participent à la définition d'un "paysage" funéraire propre aux colonies grecques de la Méditerranée nord-occidentale

    Abstract: L'oppidum des Caisses de Jean-Jean (Mouriès, Bouches-du- Rhône) et son faubourg des Petites Caisses constituent un des sites archéologiques majeurs de la région du Bas-Rhône et d'une façon plus générale de la Provence. Le site se caractérise par son étendue, la durée prolongée de son occupation (de la fin du VIIIe s. av. J.-C. à celle du IIIe s. ap. J.-C.) et par son puissant système défensif le singularisant par rapport à la plupart des oppida régionaux aux fortifications généralement plus simples et de moindre durée. Déjà naturellement protégé par de hautes falaises, il était aussi défendu par plusieurs remparts. La fouille du rempart principal de l'oppidum, abordée entre 1939 et 1942 par Fernand Benoit, a été reprise depuis le début des années 2000, en mettant en évidence la juxtaposition de plusieurs de ses états successifs (entre le VIe et le Ier s. av. J.-C.). Elle a été complétée par d'autres recherches sur ses défenses avancées (fossés et agger, « chevaux-de-frise », avant-mur) ainsi que sur d'autres murailles jusqu'alors inconnues du faubourg méridional. Le présent ouvrage constitue le bilan de ces travaux, qui renouvellent considérablement les connaissances jusqu'alors disponibles pour l'étude des fortifications protohistoriques provençales. Chaque rempart a fait l'objet d'un étude archéologique et architecturale détaillée. Certaines questions ayant fait débat (remploi de stèles dans les remparts, tertre de cendre, « chevaux-de- frise ») sont examinées en cours d'exposé. La synthèse finale replace, grâce à de multiples comparaisons, ce puissant et complexe système défensif dans l'ensemble des fortifications de l'âge du Fer en Gaule méditerranéenne, et évalue la part respective des modes de construction traditionnels, des capacités d'innovation des constructeurs et des emprunts aux modèles étrangers

    Abstract: En 2011, une fouille archéologique préventive réalisée à Istres, au pied de la colline du Castellan n, a mis au jour les vestiges d'une agglomération rurale gallo-romaine, qui prend la suite d'une agglomération de hauteur des premier et second âges du fer, avant d'être démantelée par des récupérateurs de matériaux à la fin du IVe siècle ou au début du Ve siècle. Idéalement située dans l'environnement varié à proximité de l'étang de Berre, de la plaine de la Crau, des zones humides de Camargue et de la Méditerranée, cette agglomération a su tirer parti des ressources naturelles disponibles et de sa proximité avec le port antique de Fos, lieu d'échange des produits du commerce maritime. Les bâtiments, leurs aménagements et le mobilier révèlent la vie quotidienne et les pratiques culturelles d'une population gauloise rurale. La découverte de deux sépultures et d'un bûcher placés au plus près des vivants témoigne également des coutumes funéraires locales. Au total, ces investigations renouvellent profondément notre vision de l'occupation du territoire et des modes de peuplement à l'ouest de l'étang de Berte. Aux villae, établissements et bergeries viennent désormais s'ajourer de petites agglomérations qui trouvent leur place dans le maillage territorial

Once ramshackle affairs held together with duct tape and wire, matatus today are name-brand vehicles maxed out with aftermarket detailing. They can be stately black or extravagantly colored, sporting names, slogans, or entire tableaus, with airbrushed portraits of everyone from Kanye West to Barack Obama. In this richly interdisciplinary book, Kenda Mutongi explores the history of the matatu from the 1960s to the present. As Mutongi shows, matatus offer a window onto the socioeconomic and political conditions of late-twentieth-century Africa.     Abstract: This book traces translation and interpreting practices in the Habsburg Empire’s (1848-1918) administration, courts and diplomatic service, and takes account of the “habitualised” translation carried out in everyday life. It then details the flows of translation among the Habsburg crownlands and between these and other European languages, with a special focus on Italian–German exchange.     Abstract: Das Buch befasst sich mit der Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschpraxis der Habsburgermonarchie zwischen 1848 und 1918 in der Verwaltung, bei Gericht, im diplomatischen Dienst und als tägliche Alltagspraxis. Analysiert werden ebenso die Übersetzungsströme zwischen den einzelnen Sprachen der Kronländer und mit Ländern außerhalb der Monarchie; der Fokus dieser Untersuchungen wird schließlich auf die Übersetzungen aus dem Italienischen gelegt. Unter Anwendung des Konzepts der „kulturellen Übersetzung“ und auf Pierre Bourdieu basierender translationsoziologischer Methoden untersucht das Buch die kulturkonstruierenden Mechanismen von Translation und skizziert einen „plurikulturellen Kommunikationsraum der Habsburgermonarchie“, der auch auf andere mehrsprachige Räume anwendbar ist. In order to think theoretically about our global age it is important to understand how the global has been conceived historically. 'Eurafrica' was an intellectual endeavor and political project that from the 1920s saw Europe's future survival - its continued role in history - as completely bound up with Europe's successful merger with Africa. In its time the concept of Eurafrica was tremendously influential in the process of European integration. Today the project is largely forgotten, yet the idea continues to influence EU policy towards its African 'partner'. The book will recover a critical conception of the nexus between Europe and Africa - a relationship of significance across the humanities and social sciences. Die Fragestellung war, ob ein Pauschalvergütungsansatz auf Breitbandanschlüsse ein Baustein für ein gerechteres, modernes Urheberrecht, für angemessene Vergütung für die UrheberInnen und einen gesellschaftlichen Interessensausgleich sein kann. Das umfassende und detailreiche Gutachten leistet einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Diskussion um die Zukunft des Urheberrechts, die in Zeiten des globalen Internets in praktisch jedem Land geführt wird. Es wird vollumfänglich der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht, damit die Ergebnisse von allen Interessierten genutzt und weiterentwickelt werden können. Prof. Spindler zeigt in seinem Gutachten auf, dass ein Pauschalvergütungsansatz verfassungsrechtlich zulässig und ein attraktives Modell zur angemessenen Vergütung für Kreative sein kann. Für die Situation der NutzerInnen bietet er eine geeignete Alternative zu repressiven und gesellschaftlich höchst konfliktträchtigen Formen der Rechtsdurchsetzung. Gleichzeitig wird aber auch auf gewichtige Schwierigkeiten und Hürden bei der Umsetzung eines solchen Modells hingewiesen.     Abstract: The Internet and the proceeding digitalisation of content - such as music, videos and written texts - have led to profound and complex challenges in the field of Copyright Law, especially with regard to questions of enforcement as well as adequate compensation of right holders. In recent years, several alternative compensation schemes have been proposed, seeking to solve these issues. In Germany, the discussion still focuses on the so-called "cultural flatrate", that is, in a nutshell, a limitation to copyrights which would legalize sharing of content online. Every holder of a broadband connection to the Internet would have to pay a monthly fee which would be used to remunerate the right holders.This advisory opinion was compiled on behalf of the parliamentary group of the German political party "Bündnis 90/DIE GRÜNEN". The author comprehensively analyses the feasibility of the described alternative compensation scheme under German and European law, discussing both legal and economic obstacles and possible impacts based on a variety of different economic prerequisites

Jahrhunderts erfasste Künstler, Literaten und Musiker gleichermaßen und legte wichtige Grundlagen für die Entwicklung der modernen Kunst. Außergewöhnlich hoch ist in dieser Zeit die Zahl doppelbegabter Künstler, die gedrängt vom Willen zu gesellschaftlichem Umbruch und inspiriert von neuesten Erkenntnissen aus Philosophie und Wissenschaft ihren expressiven und emotional aufgeladenen künstlerischen Ausdruck in verschiedenen Medien suchten. Untersuchungen zeitgenössischer Texte geben Aufschluss über die Voraussetzungen zum doppelbegabten Schaffen, das wie der historische Vergleich zeigt, nie zuvor in solcher Intensität stattgefunden hat.     Abstract: The meeting of members of different cultures, frequently conceptualized in abstract terms, always involves the meeting of human bodies. This volume brings together contributions by scholars of various disciplines that address physical aspects and effects of cultural encounters in historical and present-day settings. Bodies were and are not only markers of cultural identity and difference, endlessly inscribed and represented as the ‘body politic’ or ‘the exotic other’; as battlegrounds of cross-cultural signification and identification bodies are also potential agents of change. While some essays address the elusiveness of the ‘real’ or material body, forever lost behind a veil of textual and visual representation, others analyze the performative effect of such representations – their function of disciplining colonized bodies and subjects by integrating them into Western systems of cultural signification and scientific classification. Yet, as the volume also shows, formerly colonized people, far from subjecting themselves completely to Western discourses of physical discipline, retain traditional body practices – whether in food culture, religious ritual, or musical performances. Such local reinscriptions escape the grip of Western culture and transform the global semantics of the body

Einen Perspektivwechsel wegvom Gesetzgeber und hin zum Mündel forderte der nachfolgende Beitrag, der dieAuswahl des passenden Vormunds für den individuellen Mündel thematisierte (BarbaraSeidenstücker). Abschließend wurden die strukturellen Probleme auf Seiten derJugendämter aufgezeigt (Hans-Werner Pütz) und das im Gesetzgebungsverfahrenvernachlässigte Problem beleuchtet, welche Konsequenzen sich aus dem Gesetzentwurffür die Ergänzungspflegschaft ergeben (Thomas Meysen)

Die Gesellschaft und ihr Recht ignorieren diese Variabilitäten jenseits der natürlichen Geschlechtlichkeit jedoch mit Blick auf Orientierungsbedürfnisse weitgehend: Familien- und personenstandsrechtliche Zuschreibungen müssen eindeutig sein, Veränderungen des biologischen Geschlechts kommen nur in seltenen Ausnahmefällen in Betracht, die gesellschaftlichen Vorstellungen über den Freiraum an „sexueller Selbstbestimmung“ werden an den Grenzen strafrechtlich abgesichert und jene, die sich nicht daran halten, gelten in der Rechtspraxis entweder als schuldfähig oder haben mit u.U. langjährigem Freiheitsentzug im Rahmen der Sicherungsverwahrung zu rechnen. Dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen individueller Disposition und gesellschaftlicher Erwartung war Gegenstand eines Workshops, der am 20. November 2009 gemeinsam vom Institut für Humangenetik der Universitätsmedizin Göttingen und dem Zentrum für Medizinrecht der Juristischen Fakultät veranstaltet wurde.     Abstract: This book is a collection of seven essays with an introduction by the editor. The contributions propose first-hand studies of some of the less researched aspects of the history of the Italian communes: the practices of conflict, vendetta and pacification. The variety of different ways of resolving conflicts brought to light by the studies for the various civic and rural contexts (Mantua, Parma, Pisa, Lucca, Florence and the Valdinievole), between the beginning of the thirteenth and the mid fourteenth century, indicate how normal such social relations were, the widespread nature of the feud and the legitimisation and centrality of the culture of the vendetta within the political arena of the commune. The book hence offers a precious contribution for a review of the prevalent narration of the vendetta in late mediaeval Italian society

    Abstract: In April 1479, the communities of the marquisate of Mantua pronounced for the first time a general oath of fealty to Federico Gonzaga, the third marquis, inaugurating a custom that was to be repeated with relative regularity in the following decades every time a Prince died. It was a practice which was fairly new for the Gonzago marquisate, at least in this capillary and general extension to the entire body of the State. The significance of an innovation of this kind deserves attention, as do the genesis and the partial forms that preceded this mature expression.     Abstract: The different written and archaeological sources give a very heterogeneous picture of the social and religious structures in Eastern Middle Europe. Recent developments in modern archaeological and historical research have shown new approaches to the analysis of elites. In every society there is a leading minority, who cumulates both wealth and prestige and is characterized by an elevated social rank, reputation and acceptance. An external marker of these elites is especially the superregional transfer of certain items, but also of the culturally encoded value systems. The present study asks whether this notion of cultural transfer, developed in the context of modern history, can be applied as well to the study of mutual influences between the elites of medieval Western and Eastern Middle Europe. It also raises the question if this terminology is equally useful for the analysis of written and material sources, and to what extent it might open a new perspective on the rich but as yet often unexplored history of the lands east of the Elbe river.〈p〉So unterschiedlich Schriftquellen und Bodenfunde des östlichen Mitteleuropas auch Zeugnis ablegen, so stimmen sie darin überein, ein sehr heterogenes Bild von der inneren gesellschaftlichen und religiösen Struktur der gentes zu liefern. Die gegenwärtige Entwicklung in der Archäologie und Geschichtswissenschaft zeigt neue Betrachtungsweisen in der Untersuchung von Eliten. In jeder Gesellschaft existiert eine Reichtum und Prestige auf sich ziehende führende Minderheit: Sie wird durch eine hohe soziale Position gekennzeichnet, aber auch durch Ansehen und Anerkennung. Als äußeres Kennzeichen der Eliten zeichnet sich dabei besonders der überregionale Transfer einzelner Güter und ihrer kulturell kodierten Wertsysteme ab. Doch eignet sich die eigentlich an neuzeitlichen Verhältnissen entwickelte Vorstellung des Kulturtransfers auch zur Untersuchung wechselseitiger Beeinflussungen der Eliten des westlichen und östlichen Mitteleuropas im Mittelalter? Ist es gleichermaßen für die Untersuchung schriftlicher wie materieller Quellen geeignet? Öffnet es einen neuen Blick auf die reiche, überbordende und zugleich noch vielfach verschlossene Geschichte des Raumes östlich der Elbe?

    Abstract: This volume is devoted to one of the major aristocratic lineages of northern Italy in the later middle ages. The Rossi, whose political and social eminence dates back to the communal age, built in the Parmense a powerful lordship, based both on their estates and fortresses and on a vast patronage network spread over the territory and in the town: and the power of the family, though diminished after the crisis in the relations with the Sforza in 1482, was restored on partially different foundations during the Italian Wars. The essays collected in this book explore the complexity of the Rossi "little seignorial state", focusing on its internal constitution, on its exterior relations and on its artistic and cultural features between the mid-fourteenth and the early sixteenth century

    Abstract: In a perspective of local history that combines problem analysis with a reconstruction accessible even to non-specialists, this book addresses the economy, society and institutions of a rural community of the Tuscan Apennines. The community of Raggiolo is portrayed over a long span of time ranging from the late centuries of the Middle Ages up to the end of the eighteenth century. Dieser Band fasst die Beiträge zusammen, die sowohl zu literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen als auch zu sprach- und übersetzungswissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen präsentiert wurden. Neben Aspekten wie z.B. dem autobiographischen oder faschismuskritischen Gehalt des schriftstellerischen Werkes werden die Kontakte Thelens zu den Niederlanden und seine Tätigkeit als Vermittler untersucht. Seine Übersetzungen aus dem Niederländischen und die Übersetzung seines Werkes 〈i〉Die Insel des zweiten Gesichts〈/i〉 ins Englische und Niederländische werden genauso betrachtet wie die Sprache und Lyrik des Wortkünstlers

    Abstract: The PhD thesis presented here investigates the historic landscape of the Cinque Terre through analysis of the multiform territorial iconography, descriptions of the past and the ancient cadastral records. The aim is to define a methodology (which could possibly also be extended to other contexts) for the qualitative appraisal of the landscape, where the yardstick is yielded by the abstract status conditions brought to light by parameters defined as “historic indicators”. The temporal thresholds analysed (1612, 1643, 1799, 1918-32, 1982, 1990) lead to interpretative syntheses (for example, those on Riomaggiore) aimed at the identification of rules for project initiatives shared by the local communities

    Abstract: My book deals for the first time comprehensively with the techniques (and methodologies) of socio-cultural research in pre-modern societies. Contrary to prevailing opinion, it holds that some form of empirical research in these domains must have been present in all human groups, and every type of society, otherwise they would not have been able to adapt to other groups and to their own Internal changes. I distinguish between three basic research techniques: (1) travel, (2) the survey, and (3) the collection and interpretation of material objects.. Chapters I-III follow the development of these techniques from primitive societies via the early civilizations (exemplified by the Ancient near East, Egypt, Israel and the Greco-Roman world) and the Middle Ages to Early Modern Western Society. The mainstay of the book is the period from late humanism to the "scientific revolution" (circa 1570-1660),when all the techniques were refined and two of them (travel and collecting) were methodized. In that period also the age-old barriers against the accumulation of the research results and thus the development of socio-cultural sciences, namely secrecy and topicality, began to break down. I hold that all this contributed decisively to the hegemony of the west over all other World civilizations. Chapters IV-VIII deal with some special problems of the following period from the "scientific revolution" to the onset of Modernity (circa 1660-1800). They are closely interconnected and add some significant and lively details to the generalizations of chapters I-III.
    Abstract: Mein Buch behandelt zum erstenmal zusammenfassend die Techniken (und Methodologien) der Sozial- und Kulturforschung vormoderner gesellschaften. Im Unterschied zur vorherrschenden meinung geht es davon aus, dass es irgendeine Form empirischer Forschung auf diesen gebieten in allen menschlichen Gruppen und Gesellschaftsformen gegeben haben muss, da diese sich ansonsten nicht an andere gruppen sowie an die eigenen inneren Wandlungen hätten anpassen können. Ich unterscheide drei grundlegende Forschungstechniken: (1 ) das Reisen, (2) die Umfrage und (3) das Sammeln und Interpretieren konkreter Objekte. Kapitel I-III folgen der Entwicklung dieser Techniken von den archaischen Gesellschaften über die frühen Hochkulturen (exemplifiziert durch den Alten Orient, Ägypten, Israel und die griechisch-römische Welt) und das Mittelalter bis zum Europa der Frühen Neuzeit. Das Zentrum des Buches bildet die Periode vom Späthumanismus bis wir "wissenschaftlichen revolution" (ca. 1570-1660), als alle drei Techniken verfeinert und zwei von ihnen, das Reisen und das Sammeln, zu formalen Kunstlehren wurden. In dieser Periode begannen auch die traditionellen Hemmnisse der Akkumulation der Resultate empirischer Sozial- und Kulturforschung und damit der Herausbildung der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften, nämlich die Geheimhaltung und der Aktualismus, nachzugeben. Dies hat meiner Ansicht nach wesentlich zur Vorherrschaft des Westens über die anderen Weltkulturen beigetragen. Kapitel IV-VIII behandeln Einzelprobleme der darauffolgenden Periode von der "wissenschaftlichen Revolution" bis zur Epochenschwelle der Moderne (ca. 1660-1800). Sie hängen untereinander eng zusammen und fügen den Allgemeinaussagen der Kapitel I-III signifikante und lebensnahe Details hinzu.
