Abstract: Mankind has reached its present physical form through evolution of the movement system. Muscles, bones, and joints are the most important components of the movement system. Muscles are active elements, while bones and joints are passive elements. But to bring about movement, these three elements must work together. Tendons are round, oval, or flat tissues that connect muscles to bones. Muscle, tendon, or ligament injuries prevent motion so this is an important issue in trauma. If muscle, tendon, or ligament injuries occur together with vessel or nerve injury, it may be life threatening. The cause of injury might differ from a simple sports injury to a serious traffic accident. Muscles, bones, and joints have taken their place in the literature, but it would be wrong to say the same for tendons. This book describes tendons from different perspectives, thus providing the missing information in the literature. I hope that this book will be useful for anyone who wants to read about new perspectives on tendons. I also hope that it will inspire researchers working in this field

Abstract: Geographic information science (GISc) has established itself as a collaborative information-processing scheme that is increasing in popularity. Yet, this interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary system is still somewhat misunderstood. This book talks about some of the GISc domains encompassing students, researchers, and common users. Chapters focus on important aspects of GISc, keeping in mind the processing capability of GIS along with the mathematics and formulae involved in getting each solution. The book has one introductory and eight main chapters divided into five sections. The first section is more general and focuses on what GISc is and its relation to GIS and Geography, the second is about location analytics and modeling, the third on remote sensing data analysis, the fourth on big data and augmented reality, and, finally, the fifth looks over volunteered geographic information

Abstract: Adipose tissue, a kind of connective tissue, plays different and significant roles in the human body. Its function includes protection against environmental factors, storage of lipids and triacylglycerol, and the process of thermogenesis. It is also involved in the secretion of highly active biomolecules such as steroid hormones, prostaglandins, as well as proteins called “adipokines.” On the other hand, disturbances in functions of adipose tissue may cause several pathologies such as obesity and insulin resistance. Obesity is a worldwide health problem, whereas diabetes mellitus due to insulin resistance is defined by the World Health Organization as “a progressive worldwide epidemic.” Especially dangerous is visceral accumulation of adipose tissue. This book describes a series of up-to-date topics about physiological and pathological processes in adipose tissue

Abstract: In the current practice of modern medicine, the treatment of infectious and nutritional disorders is well established. In contrast, currently genetic disorders/diseases and cancer constitute a substantial load in the clinic. The care of genetic-based diseases and cancer has become a major task in medical practices worldwide and it is unprecedented. It will be rare for any family to be entirely free of genetic disease, therefore genetic diseases impose a huge burden upon individuals, families, and societies. Modern medicine is at the crossroads in the new genomic era with the development of more and more modern technologies. Remarkable advances have been well achieved in defining and classifying these genetic-associated diseases. The identification of the genetic landscape of germ line mutations-associated leukemia caused by either inherited gene mutations or syndromes has led to a deep understanding of leukemogenesis, recognition of clinical diagnosis, and translation into clinical practice in its specific management strategies

Abstract: Cyber security is taking on an important role in information systems and data transmission over public networks. This is due to the widespread use of the Internet for business and social purposes. This increase in use encourages data capturing for malicious purposes. To counteract this, many solutions have been proposed and introduced during the past 80 years, but Cryptography is the most effective tool. Some other tools incorporate complicated and long arithmetic calculations, vast resources consumption, and long execution time, resulting in it becoming less effective in handling high data volumes, large bandwidth, and fast transmission. Adding to it the availability of quantum computing, cryptography seems to lose its importance. To restate the effectiveness of cryptography, researchers have proposed improvements. This book discusses and examines several such improvements and solutions

Abstract: Almost five million tonnes of cocoa produced annually drives the US$100 billion global chocolate industry. To sustain the industry, cacao planting materials (seeds and clones) have been successfully moved from the Amazon forests in America to the humid tropical forests of Africa, Asia, and Australia. In more than 150 years of commercial cacao cultivation, smallholder farmers that supply the bulk of cocoa beans still face several production constraints that impede their efficiency. Scientific technologies have therefore been deployed to remove these constraints by ensuring a continuous supply of good quality cocoa beans to meet growing global demand. This book provides insight into these scientific advances to address these current and emerging problems and to assure the sustainability of the global cocoa industry

Abstract: Based on previsions, the reciprocating internal combustion engine will continue to be widely used in all sectors: transport, industry, and energy production. Therefore, its development, while complying with the limitations of pollutants as well as CO2 emission levels and maintaining or increasing performance, will certainly continue for the next few decades. In the last three decades, a significant effort has been made to reduce pollutant emission levels. More recently, attention has been given to CO2 emission levels too.It is widely recognized that one single technology will not completely solve the problem of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Rather, the different technologies already available will have to be integrated, and new technologies developed, to obtain substantial CO2 abatement

Abstract: Authenticating data such as image, video, and audio is an important task in digital communication. Another critical task is establishing ownership of the copyright. Digital watermarking is a technique used to provide authentication and ownership of the copyright to the data. Too much digitalization of data in the form of image, video, and audio communicated through various web and mobile applications makes authentication a challenging task. Steganography, the art of hiding tiny pieces of data in image, video, and audio, can also help in copyright protection, authentication, and access control. This book provides three watermarking and two steganography methods and will be a useful resource for graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers in the field of electrical engineering

Abstract: We look at green supply chain management from the vantage point of the triple bottom line: environmental, economic, and social. There are many sustainability decisions that can be made on which we have an incredible impact. Usually, managers have the opportunity to make decisions in five areas of the supply chain: plan, source, make, deliver, and return. Nowadays, consumers care more about where and how the products are produced and delivered, what they are made of, and who made them. Regulatory bodies are continuously creating pressure on firms to adopt eco-friendly practices in their businesses for better environmental sustainability. As a result, firms have just two choices: to adopt green and/or eco-friendly practices in their supply chain operations to fulfill their customers' and regulatory bodies' requirement or not to adopt green practices and lose their business position and potential customers

Abstract: Major depression is a severe and prevalent brain disorder with a high disability burden, hence the push for effective treatments. Antidepressants have been around since the 1950s, and although current medications are much more effective than early ones, there is still much room for improvement. "Real" antidepressants, defined as those that "repair" or "improve" the depression-causing mechanism in the brains of depressed patients, have yet to be identified. This book presents current research on depression and antidepressants, including use of antidepressants in alcohol use disorders and pregnancy, treatment-resistant depression, and development of potential new medications

Abstract: Tribology has rapidly expanded in recent years as the demand for improved materials has increased. The good function of numerous electrical, electrochemical, mechanical, and biological systems or components depends on suitable friction, lubrication, and wear as well as tribological values. In this context, the study of friction, wear, and lubrication is of tremendous pragmatic importance. The reduction of friction and loss of materials in relative motion are important challenges to improveing energy efficiency. This book guides the rational design of material for technological application. Chapters cover topics such as the resistance of dry abrasive wear, the role of a brand-new additive in the minimization of friction and wear, the structural-energy model of elastic-plastic deformation, the influence of micro-abrasive wear modes, tribological characteristics of magneto-rheological fluids (MRFs) and magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs), and different treatment technologies to improve tribological properties, among others

Abstract: Plants are subjected to numerous environmental stresses, which can be classified into two broad areas: abiotic and biotic stresses. While the first is considered the damage done to an organism by other living organisms, the latter occurs as a result of a negative impact of non-living factors on the organisms. In this scenario, the current most accepted opinion of scientists is that both biotic and abiotic factors in nature and agroecosystems are affected by climate change, which may lead to significant crop yield decreases worldwide. We should take into consideration not only this environmental concern but also the fact that 20 years from now the earth's population will need 55% more food than it can produce now. Therefore, it is crucial to address such concerns and bring about possible solutions to future plant stress-related outcomes that might affect global agriculture. This book intends to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of both biotic and abiotic stresses through 10 chapters that include case studies and literature reviews about these topics. There will be a particular focus on understanding the physiological, biochemical, and molecular changes observed in stressed plants as well as the mechanisms underlying stress tolerance in plants

Abstract: Whey - Biological Properties and Alternative Uses proposes to rethink our use of agro-industrial by-products. Especially, those from cheese production, which although contain 50% of the nutrients of the original milk, are treated as waste. In this book, the authors offer alternative processes beyond the traditional ones, such as the production of vodka beverages from fermented whey, lactose-free isotonic beverages and glycomacropeptides in the food industry. Also, it discusses alternative uses of buttermilk: the production of biofilms, beverages, and microbiology additives. As always, the emphasis is on reducing environmental impact during food production and finding new strategies to reduce the waste of raw materials with nutritional value. This book is an excellent opportunity for graduate students and researchers from other areas to become aware of the problems faced when considering agro-industrial by-products with nutritional value as waste

Abstract: This book deals with very different aspects of nutrition from different countries (qualities and quantities of food, their absorptions from the gastrointestinal tract, utilization in healthy human beings or in patients with different diseases, food and drug interactions, etc.). However, these different nutritional positions are different in the different countries. The 13 chapters were written by experts from countries in four continents (Asia, Africa, America, and Europe) and generally cover one nutritional problem each; however, if we analyze the results of all the chapters, we can see the most important nutritional problems from all over the world. This detailed analysis offers us an overview of this most urgent nutritional problem. We know that the world's population has increased exponentially in the last few decades (and is still increasing); however, foods and food products have increased more slowly. We have to solve these and other nutritional problems to ensure the health of generations to come

Abstract: Gastrointestinal stomas constitute an evident anatomical modification, but their perception by patients represents a serious and unacceptable alteration of the body schema. Esophagostomy, gastrostomy, and jejunostomy are usually temporary, but ileostomy and colostomy are permanent in many cases. Two purposes characterize the two types of intestinal stomas: to divert intestinal content and to allow enteral nutrition. The purpose of the stoma in the therapeutic program is surrounded by many misunderstandings and this notice given by surgeons is horrifying to patients. In this therapeutic scenario the enterostomal therapist plays a central role. This book pays great attention to the care of the stoma and its therapeutic role, but overall the need is to prevent diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for this surgical alteration to the body's anatomy

Abstract: Each year, malaria kills almost half a million people despite the fact that it is a preventable and curable disease. Malaria has a direct correlation with economic loss due to the need for people to take time off work and the cost of hospital treatments. Undertaking decisive measures to combat malaria is necessary. This book aims to present current approaches in the treatment of malaria. It will be a guide to those working in malaria-endemic regions and cover both diagnosis and treatment. It will also be useful for medical workers in western countries where malaria is not as common. Considering that malaria causes morbidity and mortality, more especially among children below five years of age and pregnant mothers, it is therefore imperative that people from all walks of life should join hands to address this public health problem

Abstract: This book provides some of the most advanced research observations and in-depth knowledge behind lead-free soldering. Readers will find a description of different cutting-edge techniques used for improving the reliability of interconnects manufacturing. Some of the most unconventional topics covered in this book include solder joint formation for microelectronic devices at room temperature and the possibility of soldering ceramic materials, which is limited due to the poor wettability of ceramic substrates with commercial solders following classical soldering techniques. We also discuss the possibilities of nanoscale preparation of solder joints for bringing down the processing temperature so that it does not affect the packaging technologies. Readers will find that precise, systematic discussion of solder joint formation and its interfacial characterization has been depicted for each technique used in different chapters. This book is of interest to both fundamental researchers and also to practicing scientists and will prove invaluable to all those working in industry and academia

Abstract: All engineering processes are processes of non-equilibrium because one or all of heat, mass, and momentum transfer occur in an open system. The pure equilibrium state can be established in an isolated system, in which neither mass nor heat is transferred between the system and the environment. Most engineering transport analyses are based on the semi-, quasi-, or local equilibrium assumptions, which assume that any infinitesimal volume can be treated as a box of equilibrium. This book includes various aspects of non-equilibrium or irreversible statistical mechanics and their relationships with engineering applications. I hope that this book contributes to expanding the predictability of holistic engineering consisting of thermo-, fluid, and particle dynamics

Abstract: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is a diverse group of communicable diseases that prevail in tropical and subtropical conditions in 149 countries. NTDs affect more than one billion people and cost developing economies billions of dollars every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), NTDs mainly affect populations living in poverty, without adequate sanitation, and in close contact with infectious vectors, domestic animals, and livestock. Migration, as well as climate change and variability, are key factors in NTD prevalence. Therefore, NTDs deserve more study. Recently, viruses transmitted by vectors (arboviruses) that affect not only people living in the tropics, but also travelers and migrating populations, have been causing epidemics. Examples of these viruses include Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, Mayaro, and encephalitis viruses. These viruses emerge and reemerge in multiple regions of the world, as occurred in the Americas recently (2013-2017) with Chikungunya and Zika. This book aims to update the significant epidemiological and clinical research of NTDs in many aspects with a multinational perspective

Abstract: Trauma presents as a negative experience or situation of an individual in which coping mechanisms do not always work perfectly. This leads to the appearance of disturbing behavior, thinking, or developing disorders in the area of mental illnesses. Psychological trauma is related to chronic and repetitive experiences and the term and situation that refer to it must be consider objectively because it is up to each survivor to determine if it is traumatic. Future studies in the area of psychological trauma need to be conducted with the aim of defining anatomical correlates of stress and its underlying pathophysiological mechanisms

Abstract: Technological innovation has undergone unprecedented development; this evolution can offer extraordinary opportunities for product qualification, which today has not been adequately exploited due to a lack of vision. It took a disaster such as "mad cow" disease to accelerate the traceability plan; today, 36% of the analyzed agri-food companies, thanks to digital solutions, achieved a reduction in the times and costs connected with harvest processes, data management, and transmission. Digital solutions permit interventions aimed at food safety along the food chain, thus avoiding financial damage. But they can also be used to combat counterfeiting to protect the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) systems for greater information for the consumer

Abstract: Fractionation, in the most general sense, could mean any process whereby a mixture is separated into different components or fractions. Examples of fractionation processes include dephlegmation, fractional distillation, fractional freezing, fractional melting, isotope fractionation, and other separation techniques. Of the many and varied separation processes available, fractionation plays a major part, and capital investment in fractionation equipment and processes may form a significant fraction of industrial processing investment. Fractionation as a separation technique is extensively used in widely diverse areas such as the application of geochemical fractionation of metals in sediments of water reservoirs, fractionation of polysaccharides from selected mushroom species, and fractional distillation of bio-oil produced by pyrolysis of certain palm seeds

Abstract: This book examines experiences in resource-limited settings, including Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) and covers a mix of strategies to reduce hospital mortality in these settings. These include population-level and clinical interventions such as health literacy; clinical management guidelines around nutrition; guidelines and protocols for a multi-disciplinary team approach for surgical care; and improving hospital outcomes for elderly patients. The authors argue that robust quality-of-care systems, driven by evidence-based models/frameworks, are relevant in the matrix of solutions. Clinicians, health administrators, policy makers, academics, and students of public health and related disciplines should critically examine these strategies, inclusive of policy and programmatic interventions to reduce hospital mortality across the demographic spectrum in LMICs and other resource-limited settings

Abstract: The cellular prion protein (PrPC) is expressed as a cell surface protein mainly in the central and peripheral nervous system. The discovery that prions are infectious agents changed the concept of protein synthesis in modern biology and built a bridge between the genesis of infectious and genetic diseases. This book discusses the normal function of the PrPC and its modulatory role in synaptic mechanisms. It describes the pathophysiological processes that accompany TSE - neurotoxicity, loss of anti-inflammatory protective function, neuronal death including prion-induced autophagy and apoptosis, and accumulation of PrPSc in the cytoplasm of neurons. Another aspect outlined here is that some prion diseases show strain variations that determine their development, demonstrating their key role in the development and progression of TSE

Abstract: Lignocellulosic wastes has been widely discussed as a promising natural chemical source and alternative feedstock for second-generation biofuels. However, there are still many technical and economic challenges facing its utilization. Lignin is one of the components of lignocellulosic biomass, and is the most rigid constituent and can be considered as a glue providing the cell wall with stiffness and the plant tissue with compressive strength. In addition, it provides resistance to chemical and physical damage. Resistance of lignocelluloses to hydrolysis is mainly from the protection of cellulose by lignin and cellulose binding to hemicellulose. The present book provides basic knowledge and recent research on different applications of biomass, focusing on the bioenergy and different pretreatment methods that overcome the aforementioned hurdles

Abstract: Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality around the globe, particularly among aging populations. Lipoprotein disorders, frequently encountered by clinicians, require early recognition and treatment. In this book, we assembled a group of world-renowned scholars in their field to address major areas in lipoprotein disorders that are imminently relevant to clinicians and other healthcare providers. Areas discussed include an overview of lipid metabolism, a complex topic, presented in a simplified and rational way. We also highlight recent developments in the field including dyslipidemias characterized by nontraditional lipid biomarkers. Furthermore, we discuss the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and the role of dyslipidemia. Other chapters include the assessment of primary and secondary causes of dyslipidemia. Targets for treatment as well as the role of major therapeutic agents including statins and PCSK9 inhibitors are also discussed in light of the most recent guidelines by major international organizations. This is in addition to an overview of lifestyle and dietary modification as well as alternative options for dyslipidemia management. Furthermore, dyslipidemia in special populations is emphasized including various ethnic groups as well as those with HIV disease, chronic kidney disease, among others. The role of adiposity including brown fat together with highlights on lipidomics and dyslipidemias characterized by nontraditional lipid biomarkers is also highlighted. We believe that this volume will serve as a valuable resource, not only for clinicians and other healthcare providers, but for students and research scholars as well

Abstract: Proliferation of distributed generation and the increased ability to monitor different parts of the electrical grid offer unprecedented opportunities for consumers and grid operators. Energy can be generated near the consumption points, which decreases transmission burdens and novel control schemes can be utilized to operate the grid closer to its limits. In other words, the same infrastructure can be used at higher capacities thanks to increased efficiency. Also, new players are integrated into this grid such as smart meters with local control capabilities, electric vehicles that can act as mobile storage devices, and smart inverters that can provide auxiliary support. To achieve stable and safe operation, it is necessary to observe and coordinate all of these components in the smartgrid

Abstract: "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food" said Hippocrates, the father of medicine approximately 2500 years ago. Is food also medicine? Are products that intend to cure diseases medicinal products and not food? Do we know the combination of foods or food components with functional properties that can help promote the well-being or reduce the risk of chronic diseases? In general terms, all foods are functional because they provide the nutrients necessary for a healthy diet. So what are the components that functional foods have beyond their nutrition value? What is the definition of functional foods? What scientific research is needed to validate health claims for functional foods? This book will provide answers to all of these questions. It is important for scientists to have the opportunities to study the relationship between a food type or a food active component and the improved state of health or reduction of diseases. The communication of health benefits to consumers is of critical importance so that they have the knowledge to make informed choices about the foods they eat and enjoy

Abstract: In this book, the relationship between the textile industry and the environment is examined from four different viewpoints. Recycling of spinning mill wastes, ozone usage that provides less chemical and water utilization, reuse of treated water in the dyeing processes, and approaches in the treatment of wastewaters of dyeing plants and finishing factories are solutions offered to reduce environmental pollution arising from textile production processes. Apart from this, energy management is also a subject that can be associated with the environment, and as a consequence, the possibility of utilizing textile materials to which phase change materials are applied, not only for comfort purposes but also as energy storage materials, means that technical textiles could be a solution for energy storage

Abstract: Myasthenia gravis is a rare potentially fatal chronic autoimmune disorder. Circulating autoantibodies directed against components of the neuromuscular junction of skeletal muscles, most commonly nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and associated protein in the postsynaptic membrane, block neuromuscular transmission resulting in muscle weakness. This muscle weakness typically worsens with continued activity, improves on rest, and is of variable severity ranging from mild ocular muscle weakness to severe generalized muscle weakness, involving the respiratory muscle with impending respiratory failure. The worldwide prevalence of myasthenia gravis is 100-200 per million population, affecting more than 700,000 people all over the world. The prevalence rate has increased since the 1950s due to improved diagnostic precision and decreased mortality rate

Abstract: Materials science is the magic that allows us to change the chemical composition and microstructure of material to regulate its corrosion-mechanical, technological, and functional properties. Five major classes of stainless steels are widely used: ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation hardening. Austenitic stainless steels are extensively used for service down to as low as the temperature of liquid helium (-269ºC). This is largely due to the lack of a clearly defined transition from ductile to brittle fracture in impact toughness testing. Steels with ferritic or martensitic structures show a sudden change from ductile (safe) to brittle (unsafe) fracture over a small temperature difference. Even the best of these steels shows this behavior at temperatures higher than -100ºC and in many cases only just below zero. Various types of stainless steel are used across the whole temperature range from ambient to 1100ºC. This book will be useful to scientists, engineers, masters, graduate students, and students. I hope readers will enjoy this book and that it will serve to create new materials with unique properties

Abstract: Metamaterials have provided applications in spectral ranges covering radio frequencies and ultraviolet. However, most applications have been extrapolated to the visible or near-infrared after being developed at the GHz level. This is due to technological reasons since fabrication of microwave antennas is not as demanding as THz resonators or plasmonic nanostructures. Accordingly, this book has been divided into three parts. In the first part, fundamentals of metamaterials and metadevices are discussed, while describing recent advances in the field. In the second part, the discussion is extended to the different spectral ranges focusing on the strategies for enabling the reconfigurability of metadevices. Given the increasing interest in THz applications, these can be found in the third part
