This book reinforces the reader's learning by presenting useful, end-of-chapter pedagogical resources, including question-and-answer sessions and quizzes, as well as practical exercises that cement and extend the reader's knowledge. It explorers not only the object models of Word and Excel, but also other members of the Office 2003 suite, including PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.

Abstract: Being able to communicate effectively across cultural differences, understanding how to negotiate complex social situations, and being familiar with the customs and norms of many cultures are important skills in organizations today. Perhaps even more important than possessing those essential pieces of cultural knowledge is the skill of cultural adaptability - the willingness and ability to recognize, understand and work effectively across cultural differences. Proficiency in this area helps managers to build the relationships needed to achieve results in today's global organizations, especially when those relationships are forged across borders and cultures.

Abstract: The rapid expansion of globalization and multinational corporations means more and more managers work across the borders of multiple countries. Some of them are expatriates; most are not. And although many of these managers are not wrestling with the issues of relocating and adjusting to living in a different culture, they all find themselves dealing with cultural issues - defined in the broadest context - every time they pick up the phone, log onto their e-mail, or disembark from an airplane. What do these managers do? Is it different from the work they did when they managed in their own countries, and if it is different, how so? What does it take for them to be effective when they manage across so many countries simultaneously? What do these managers need to know in order to be effective? What do organizations need to know and do in order to select and develop people who will manage and lead effectively in the global economy? This report addresses those questions as it documents the findings of a Center for Creative Leadership research study into what factors might predict managerial effectiveness in a global context.

Abstract: Conflict with direct reports is one of the most difficult challenges facing managers today. But it's a challenge that successful leaders must learn to address. Managers who develop an understanding of difference without judging and are willing to see more than one perspective or solution are in a good position to manage such conflict. They are better prepared to understand emotions that can trigger conflict, to clarify performance expectations, and to provide ongoing feedback for the support and development of their direct reports.

Abstract: Managers who achieve significant professional goals do not often worry about career derailment. But complacency is not the same as continued success, which can usually be found among four leadership competencies: interpersonal relationships, team leadership, getting results, and adaptability. Leadership success, achieving it and continuing it, depends heavily on developing and using each of these skills.

Abstract: Despite all of the attention and accolades that organizations place on teams, they are not always the most efficient way to meet a business challenge. It's expensive and time consuming to launch a team, and it's a full-time job to lead a team toward achieving organizational objectives. This guidebook was written to help managers determine if a team is the right tool for meeting a business goal, and explains potential obstacles and challenges to forming a team that can operate at its full potential.

Abstract: This book is based on a simple, obvious point: leadership roles should be filled by people who deliberately decide they want to be in them. Yet many executives and managers find that they have become leaders by default rather than as a result of a personal choice. In fact, a great many people drift into or away from being leaders simply because they have not done the work of matching their own honestly described self with the realities of the leadership role. Not until they are well into their careers do many individuals seriously explore their personal fit for leadership. But by then, it is often too late to prepare for more gratifying roles or to get out of situations that don't make sense for them as individuals. Discovering the Leader in You offers a planful approach to understanding how aspects of personality, character, vision, home life, values, and skills match with essential leadership activities. This unique system of self-discovery clearly shows what it looks like to fit or not to fit in leadership roles in organizations. Robert J. Lee and Sara N. King, who developed this approach from their experience at the widely renowned Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina, help leaders and potential leaders examine leadership commitments and development paths in the context of who they are as individuals. They show how to connect the inner self to the demands of leadership by using a set of questions that help (1) clarify the relevant realities and expectations in a leadership role, (2) bring out a personal vision and a leadership vision, (3) base leadership behaviors on personal values, (4) become more authentic in leadership situations, and (5) productively integrate work and personal lives. Discovering the Leader in You will help all executives--seasoned veterans and those considering leading as a new direction in their careers--to gain more personal insight into what leadership really means to them, to retain more control over their career choices, and consequently to achieve more personal success as leaders. "In the considerable literature on leadership, this book focuses on something new-how individuals can identify the key attributes of great leadership and link them to their own unique vision, values, and personal strengths. The authors provide a roadmap to self-knowledge that becomes a guide to maximizing effectiveness in the organization and in life." --Evelyn Rodstein, managing director, Leadership Organizati...

Abstract: If you were to ask managers and executives where they get the most influential and effective developmental training, the answer you're likely to get is "on the job." Too often, those same managers and executives discount what can be learned from experiences outside of work. CCL research demonstrates that activities that take place outside of the regular workday contribute to a leader's effectiveness as a manager. This guidebook shows how to see those activities as opportunities for developing key leadership skills in such areas as interpersonal relations, communication, collaboration, and flexibility.
