    Abstract: Eighteenth-century Britain thought of itself as a polite, sentimental, enlightened place, but often its literature belied this self-image. This was an age of satire, and the century's novels, poems, plays, and prints resound with mockery and laughter, with cruelty and wit. The street-level invective of Grub Street pamphleteers is full of satire, and the same accents of raillery echo through the high scepticism of the period's philosophers and poets, many of whom were part-time pamphleteers themselves. The novel, a genre that emerged during the 18th century, was from the beginning shot through with satirical colours borrowed from popular romances and scandal sheets. This handbook is a guide to the different kinds of satire written in English during the 'long' 18th century. It focuses on texts that appeared between 1660 and 1789.

Von diesen Beispielen können wir für unsere eigenen Herausforderungen auf unterschiedlichste Weise profitieren: zum einen in methodischer Hinsicht, stellen sie doch höchste Anforderungen an die Mobilisierung von Selbsthilfekräften und die Beteiligung von Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern, wenn sie überhaupt ernsthaft an einer schrittweisen Aufwertung interessiert sind; zum anderen hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit den Einflüssen des globalen und lokalen Immobilienkapitals, das auf eine maximale Verwertung insbesondere von günstig gelegenen Lagen mit Quartieren geringer Dichte und immobilienwirtschaftliche Erträge abzielt und dabei nicht selten die Lebensbedingungen der ärmsten Städter fundamental in Frage stellt.     Abstract: Der Band widmet sich einer aktuellen Bestandsaufnahme und Reflexion der Situation ostdeutscher Großwohnsiedlungen. Er zeigt, dass deren Entwicklungstrends kaum verallgemeinert werden können. Vielmehr sind ihre Anpassungsfähigkeit und damit „Haltbarkeit“ zu betonen. Das Ziel bestand darin, die Aufmerksamkeit sowohl der akademischen Debatte als auch der praktischen Wohnungswirtschaft und Wohnungspolitik auf die mittel- bis langfristigen Perspektiven zu verstärken. Der Band will ein grundsätzliches Verständnis für die differenzierten Typen von Großwohnsiedlungen schaffen und Handlungsoptionen jenseits der aktuellen Programmatik der Städtebauförderung ausloten. Ausgangspunkt ist die derzeitige Veränderung der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung: Nach einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung um Konzepte des Abrisses und Rückbaus sowie punktueller Aufwertung in den Jahren des Stadtumbaus ist es um die Großwohnsiedlungen inzwischen ruhiger geworden. Die Gründe hierfür sind vielfältig – sie mögen im Stabilisierungserfolg einiger größerer ostdeutscher Städte, insbesondere Universitätsstädte, liegen. Diese sind mittlerweile durch Einwohnerwachstum und Knappheit an bezahlbarem Wohnraum gekennzeichnet. Hier erscheinen die Großwohnsiedlungen nicht mehr existenziell bedroht. Eine andere Sachlage ist in kleineren Städten zu beobachten, wo die Wohnungsbestände in den randstädtischen Siedlungen weiterhin von Leerstand geprägt sind und der Wohnungsabriss fortgesetzt wird. Dennoch: Ostdeutsche Großwohnsiedlungen bleiben weiterhin interessante Orte differenzierter sozialräumlicher und demographischer Entwicklung. Ihre Bedeutung wird voraussichtlich wieder zunehmen, da die Herausforderungen im Zuge knappen, preiswerten Wohnraums, innerstädtischer Verdrängung und gestiegener Zuwanderung anwachsen werden. Dadurch gewinnen bekannte Fragen des Zusammenlebens und Interagierens im Wohnumfeld, der Inanspruchnahme von sozialer und technischer Infrastruktur und der Einbettung der Großwohnsiedlungen in gesamtstädtische Entwicklungsziele erneut an Aufmerksamkeit. Diese Themen werden am Beispiel einer Reihe von Großwohnsiedlungen eingehend beleuchtet. Um die geographische Dimension zu weiten, sind zwei Beiträge zu Perspektiven tschechischer und polnischer Großwohnsiedlungen im Band enthalten. Die Herausgeber Dr. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Stadtumbau an der Universität Kassel. Dr. Nico Grunze arbeitet freiberuflich im Bereich Stadtentwicklung. Dr. Sigrun Kabisch ist Professorin am Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung – UFZ in Leipzig.

    Abstract: Der Begriff der Aneignung erlebt in Diskursen zu Theorie, Praxis und Politik der Stadtentwicklung ein Revival: Angesichts der Dynamiken spätmoderner Ökonomie und Politik geht es um die Verfügbarkeit und den selbstbestimmten Gebrauch von städtischem Raum und Lebenszeit. Dieser Diskurs schließt auch das »Selber machen« von urbanen Freiräumen mit ein, »Stadtentwicklung von unten« soll die urbanen Freiräume von morgen bestimmen. Bereits nach der Planungseuphorie der 1950/60er Jahre lenkte man den Blick auf »andere« Akteure der Produktion und des Gebrauchs von urbanen Freiräumen. Dieses Buch widmet sich der vergleichenden Betrachtung der damaligen und aktuellen Theorien über die Aneignung von urbanen Freiräumen in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen.

    Abstract: For historians of early modern England, turning to legal archives and learning more about legal procedure has seemed increasingly relevant to the project of understanding familial and social relations as well as political institutions, state formation, and economic change.     Abstract: Late 19th-century Britain experienced an explosion of visual print culture and a simultaneous rise in literacy across social classes. New printing technologies facilitated quick and cheap dissemination of images--illustrated books, periodicals, cartoons, comics, and ephemera--to a mass readership. This Victorian visual turn prefigured the present-day impact of the Internet on how images are produced and shared, both driving and reflecting the visual culture of its time. From this starting point, Drawing on the Victorians explores the relationship between Victorian graphic texts and today's steampunk, manga, and other neo-Victorian genres that emulate and reinterpret their predecessors. Neo-Victorianism is a flourishing worldwide phenomenon, but one whose relationship with the texts from which it takes its inspiration remains underexplored

    Abstract: Although the emergence of the English novel is generally regarded as an eighteenth-century phenomenon, this is the first book to be published professing to cover the 'eighteenth-century English novel' in its entirety. This Handbook surveys the development of the English novel during the 'long' eighteenth century.     Abstract: The booming increase of the senior population has become a social phenomenon and a challenge to our societies, and technological advances have undoubtedly contributed to improve the lives of elderly citizens in numerous aspects. In current debates on technology, however, the »human factor« is often largely ignored. The ageing individual is rather seen as a malfunctioning machine whose deficiencies must be diagnosed or as a set of limitations to be overcome by means of technological devices. This volume aims at focusing on the perspective of human beings deriving from the development and use of technology: this change of perspective - taking the human being and not technology first - may help us to become more sensitive to the ambivalences involved in the interaction between humans and technology, as well as to adapt technologies to the people that created the need for its existence, thus contributing to improve the quality of life of senior citizens

    Abstract: This book attempts to interrogate the literary, artistic and cultural output of early modern England. Following Constance Classen's view that understandings of the senses, and sensory experience itself, are culturally and historically contingent; it explores the culturally specific role of the senses in textual and aesthetic encounters in England. The book follows Joachim-Ernst Berendt's call for 'a democracy of the senses' in preference to the various sensory hierarchies that have often shaped theory and criticism. It argues that the playhouse itself challenged its audiences' reliance on the evidence of their own eyes, teaching early modern playgoers how to see and how to interpret the validity of the visual. The book offers an essay on each of the five senses, beginning and ending with two senses, taste and smell, that are often overlooked in studies of early modern culture. It investigates Robert Herrick's accounts in "Hesperides" of how the senses function during sexual pleasure and contact. The book also explores sensory experiences, interrogating textual accounts of the senses at night in writings from the English Renaissance. It offers a picture of early modern thought in which sensory encounters are unstable, suggesting ways in which the senses are influenced by the contexts in which they are experienced: at night, in states of sexual excitement, or even when melancholic. The book looks at the works of art themselves and considers the significance of the senses for early modern subjects attending a play, regarding a painting, and reading a printed volume
