    Abstract: Durch die Analyse der Beziehungen zwischen NGOs, dem UN-Sicherheitsrat und den Menschenrechten wird in diesem Buch argumentiert, dass sowohl NGOs als auch der UN-Sicherheitsrat die Menschenrechtssemantik selektiv in Bezug auf die Orte und Akteure, die sie betreffen, anwenden. Es beobachtet Wissen und Macht als Kräfte, die sich gegenseitig beeinflussen, was eine Erklärung dafür sein kann, wie Global Governance funktioniert. Darüber hinaus untersucht das Buch die Idee, dass Recht, abgesehen von der Durchdringung traditioneller Strukturen, von der Basis der Gesellschaft in Richtung institutioneller Bereiche aufsteigen kann. In diesem Zusammenhang schlägt der Autor vor, dass das Zusammenspiel zwischen nichtstaatlichen Akteuren und politischen Institutionen die Bottom-up-Prozesse im Zusammenhang mit der Gesetzgebung und der Gestaltung politischer Entscheidungen fördert. In Anbetracht der kritischen Probleme, die sowohl die NRO als auch der UN-Sicherheitsrat in Bezug auf Repräsentation und Reaktionsfähigkeit haben, stellt die Arbeit fest, dass die Beziehung zwischen ihnen auf eine ausschließende, technokratische und arkane Weise stattfindet.

    Abstract: This book explores the ways in which democratizing Muslim countries treat their ethnic minorities’ requests of inclusiveness and autonomy. The author examines the results of two important cases-the securitization of Kurds in Turkey and the “autonomization” (a new concept coined by the study) of Acehnese in Indonesia-through multiple hypotheses: the elites’ power interest, the international factors, the institutions and history of the state, and the ontological security of the country. By examining states with ethnic diversity and very little religious diversity, the research controls for the effect of religious conflict on minority inclusion, and so allows expanded generalizations and comparisons.     Abstract: This book examines the media reform processes and re-democratization projects of Ghana and Nigeria’s emerging democracies. It evaluates and critiques these reform processes, arguing that because of dependency approaches resulting from the transplanting of policy framework from the West into these emerging democracies, the policy goals and objectives of the reforms have not been achieved. Consequently, the inherent socio-cultural, economic and political factors, coupled with the historical antecedents of these countries, have also affected the reform process. Drawing from policy documents, analyses and interviews Ufuoma Akpojivi argues that the lack of citizens’ active participation in policy processes has led to neo-liberalization and the continued universalization of Western ideologies such as democracy, media freedom and independence. Akpojivi posits that the recognition of socio-cultural, political and economic factors inherent to these emerging democracies, coupled with the communal participation of citizens, will facilitate true media reform processes and development of these countries. Ufuoma Akpojivi is Senior Lecturer in the Media Studies Department at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. His research interests cut across media policy, democratization and new media and citizens’ engagement.     Abstract: Most Western-driven theories do not have a place in Black communicative experience, especially in Africa.     Abstract: This book offers a new way of doing African philosophy by building on an analysis of the way people talk. The author bases his investigation on the belief that traditional African philosophy is hidden in expressions used in ordinary language. As a result, he argues that people are engaging in a philosophical activity when they use expressions such as taboos, proverbs, idioms, riddles, and metaphors. The analysis investigates proverbs using the ordinary language approach and Speech Act theory. Next, the author looks at taboos using counterfactual logic, which studies the meaning of taboo expressions by departing from a consideration of their structure and use. He argues that the study of these figurative expressions using the counterfactual framework offers a particular understanding of African philosophy and belief systems. The study also investigates issues of meaning and rationality departing from a study on riddles, explores conceptual metaphors used in conceptualizing the notion of politics in modern African political thought, and examines language and marginalization of women and people with disabilities. The book differs from other works in African philosophy in the sense that it does not claim that Africans have a philosophy as is commonly done in most studies. Rather, it reflects and unfolds philosophical elements in ordinary language use. The book also builds African Conception of beauty and truth through the study of language

    Abstract: "Die klassische Demokratieforschung befasst sich fast ausschliesslich mit westlichen Demokratiekonzeptionen. Dieses Sonderheft untersucht dagegen Demokratiekonzeptionen jenseits des Westens in drei disziplinären Perspektiven (Theorien, Diskurse, Einstellungen) und schlägt einen integrierten Ansatz 'global-transkultureller Demokratieforschung' (GTDF) als Alternative zur klassischen Demokratieforschung vor.In einem innovativen, disziplinäre Grenzen überschreitenden Ansatz werden nicht-westliche Konzeptionen von Demokratie in drei Formen (als Demokratietheorien, -diskurse und -einstellungen) kontextualistisch erforscht und die Ergebnisse in einer globalen und transkulturellen Perspektive systematisiert. Die Beiträge sind für die Demokratietheorie und die empirische Demokratieforschung, für die Vergleichende Politische Theorie, die Politische Kultur- bzw. Einstellungsforschung und für die Areas Studies sowie angrenzende Gebiete relevant.
