    Abstract: Was können feministische Perspektiven für die kritische Erforschung von Sicherheit(spolitiken) leisten? Die AutorInnen zeigen mit theoretischen und empirischen Beiträgen die Stärke und Wichtigkeit einer geschlechtssensiblen Perspektive auf das Thema der Sicherheit, welche auch über die politikwissenschaftliche Debatte hinausreicht. Dabei hinterfragen die Autorinnen tradierte Sicherheitskonzeptionen und erweitern das Verständnis von Krieg, Gewalt und Sicherheit, indem sie die Geschlechterverhältnisse einbeziehen. Besonders die Bedeutung von Ökonomie, Recht und Flucht wird im Zusammenhang von Geschlecht und Sicherheit berücksichtigt. Ferner ergänzen sie die bislang verhaltene deutschsprachige Diskussion um internationale Perspektiven. Der Sammelband besteht aus einem einleitenden Teil und drei inhaltlich gegliederten Teilen: Die beiden einführenden Beiträge fächern die Themengebiete und Fragestellungen auf, die aus der Verknüpfung von Sicherheitsstudien und Geschlechterstudien hervorgehen. Im ersten inhaltlichen Teil des Bandes werden die Herausforderungen einer feministischen Perspektive auf Sicherheitsfragen aufgrund struktureller, vor allem politisch-ökonomischer Analysen deutlich. Unter dem Titel ‚Sicherheit, Recht und Advocacy’ widmet sich der zweite Teil des Bandes der Rolle des Rechts in der Umsetzung von Sicherheit in Konflikt- und Postkonfliktgesellschaften. Die Beiträge im dritten Teil beschäftigen sich mit Flucht, Migration und sexualisierter Gewalt.

The book offers new ways of thinking about the history of photography, exploring through case studies the complex and historically specific articulations of gender and photography on the continent, and attending to the challenge and potential of contemporary feminist and postcolonial engagements with the medium.     Abstract: "JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE will contain about four hundred photographs, accompanied by historical contextualization. The project compares William Brumfield's photographs of churches and locations in Russia with the same structures and places photographed by Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, an early-20th-century Russian inventor of a color photography process, as much as a century earlier. Through this comparison, Brumfield assesses the state of preservation of Russia's architectural heritage and examines the appeal and pitfalls of seeing Prokudin-Gorsky's striking images as a recovery of Russia's lost past. Brumfield examines fervent Russian engagement with the Prokudin-Gorsky collection, which was recently made broadly available through digitization. The author questions the nostalgic assumptions of many analysts, who see the images as a portrayal of an idyllic Russia intact before the Soviet era and neglect the imperial violence present before the revolution. Prokudin-Gorsky himself was idealistic about the imperial potential. He intended his new color photography to convey the cultural and ethnic diversity of the vast Russian Empire, using this medium to impart a visual message from the provinces to the urban centers about the richness of Russia's history, culture, and borderlands. He escaped Russia in 1918 with many of the heavy glass negatives he used, and the Library of Congress ultimately bought the collection. Because of his own field experience photographing Russian architectural monuments, Brumfield was approached to catalog, restore, and exhibit Prokudin-Gorsky's photographs. While working on the project, he realized how much the two photographer's journeys across Russia had, unintentionally, intersected. His own photographic project accelerated with the relaxation of travel restrictions within the Soviet Union during the late 1980s; he documents the remnants of Russia's architectural heritage, and its expression of history, art, and spiritual culture, that Prokudin-Gorsky recorded earlier. This project will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Russian history, art, and architecture, as well as general readers interested in photography and historic preservation"--

    Abstract: "This book is concerned with refugee status determination in the context of 'natural' disasters and climate change. Considering evidence that the legal predicament of people who seek recognition of refugee status in this connection has been inconsistently addressed by judicial bodies in leading refugee law jurisdictions, and identifying epistemological as well as doctrinal impediments to a clear and principled application of international refugee law in this connection, the book develops a methodlogy that is theoretically informed by decades of scholarship in disaster risk reduction and doctrinally guided by a human rights-based approach. When disasters are understood as purely reflecting the indiscriminate forces of nature, it is difficult to imagine how a person may establish a well-founded fear of being persecuted, as required by Article 1A(2) of the Refugee Convention. However, when disasters are understood as the consequence of natural hazards interacting with exposed and vulnerable social conditions, the kinds of circumstances in which a person may establish eligibility for recognition of refugee status become much clearer. However, applying the dominant human rights-based approach in the context of disasters and climate change reveals deeply rooted assumptions about the meaning of core elements of the refugee definition, and a recalibrated human rights-based interpretation of general application as developed"--

    Abstract: How do the Japanese men and Chinese women who participate in cross-border matchmaking—individuals whose only interaction is often just one brief meeting—come to see one another as potential marriage partners? Motivated by this question, Chigusa Yamaura traces the practices of Sino-Japanese matchmaking from transnational marriage agencies in Tokyo to branch offices and language schools in China, from initial meetings to marriage, the visa application processes, and beyond to marital life in Japan.Engaging issues of colonial history, local norms, and the very ability to conceive of another or oneself as marriageable, Marriage and Marriageability rethinks cross-border marriage not only as a form of gendered migration, but also as a set of practices that constructs marriageable partners and imaginable marriages. Yamaura shows that instead of desiring different others, these transnational marital relations are based on the tactical deployment of socially and historically created conceptions of proximity between Japan and northeast China. Far from seeking to escape local practices, participants in these marriages actively seek to avoid transgressing local norms. By doing so on a transnational scale, they paradoxically reaffirm and attempt to remain within the boundaries of local marital ideologies

    Abstract: In The Price and Promise of Specialness, Jin Li Lim revises narratives on the overseas Chinese and the People's Republic of China by analysing the Communist approach to 'overseas Chinese affairs' in New China's first decade as a function of a larger political economy. Jin Li Lim shows how the party-state centred its approach towards the overseas Chinese on a perception of their financial utility and thus sought to offer them a special identity and place in New China, so as to unlock their riches. Yet, this contradicted the quest for socialist transformation, and as its early pragmatism fell away, the radicalising party-state abandoned its promises to the overseas Chinese, who were left to pay the price for their difference.

    Abstract: "Long-standing political tensions between Iran and the United States that intensified in the post-9/11 period and the Global War on Terror set the stage for women's rights activists both inside and outside Iran as they seek full legal equality under the Islamic Republic. Through discourse analysis and ethnographic research, Catherine Sameh demonstrates how despite limited success in overturning discriminatory laws under conservative and reform governments, women's rights activists have imprinted a gender equality perspective onto the state and society in defining modern Islamic democracy. Sameh engages with activist work both inside Iran and in the diaspora, through analysis of the One Million Signatures Campaign to End Discriminatory Law (a transnational campaign started in 2006 to reform Iranian Muslim family law), the work of Nobel Prize-winning Shirin Ebadi, and the independent, alterative internet streaming television channel Zanan TV, founded by longtime women's rights activist Mahboubeh Abbasgolizadeh. Situating post-reform women's rights activism within the unfolding and decades-long project to democratize Iran from within, Axis of Hope makes a timely and critical contribution to studies of feminist movements, women's human rights in Muslim contexts, activism and new media, and the relationship between activism, civil society, and the state"--

    Abstract: "This book explores the intellectual discourse in post-revolutionary Iran. It focuses on Abdolkarim Soroush, a leading Muslim liberal thinker, whose theory of religion is regarded highly relevant for the current theological and intellectual dynamics in the Islamic world. The Philosophy of Religion in Post-Revolutionary Iran discusses why and how Soroush's thought has developed from an Islamic apologetic modernist theology in 1970s to a liberal theory about religion in post-revolutionary Iran. Through a close and detailed analysis of Soroush's main theories, the book argues that Soroush's thought evolved through reception of post-positivist epistemology and interaction with Islamism in practice into a historicist and pluralist theory of religion; a theory that regards a religion, including Islam, as being a contextual and historical dialogue between man and the Absolute. The book also highlights some shortcomings of Soroush's reform project. Specifically, it notes that Soroush, consciously or unconsciously, has not yet admitted many extensive consequences of his theories such as historicity of religious rituals ('ibadat) or recognition of the post-Mohammadan revelations and religions. In addition, some other features and implications of Soroush's thought such as a historical-critical approach to the Koran, post-secular theology, and his dialogical approach that goes beyond Orientalism-Occidentalism dichotomy are discussed. Providing a detailed overview on this leading Muslim thinker, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Islamic Philosophy, Middle East Studies and Philosophy of Religion"--

    Abstract: "The student-led democracy movement of 1989 and Falun Gong are famous cases of popular opposition movements in reform-era China, but scholars do not typically see them as belonging to a common class of social phenomenon. The 1989 student movement, which was part of a broader Chinese democratic movement known as Zhongguo minzhu yundong or just "Minyun," is seen as a progressive social movement and a pivotal turning point in modern Chinese history. Before and after June 4, 1989, domestic Chinese politics were starkly different. For better or worse, the significance of Minyun for contemporary Chinese history is widely recognized. The Falun Gong case, by contrast, more often than not goes unseen. When it is beheld, it is usually noted as a reactionary, semi-religious aberration in Chinese politics-as-usual. Falun Gong had spectacular but ephemeral importance in 1999 and shortly thereafter, but today remains a topic left mostly to the rare subfield specialist. This book takes the unconventional stance that these two movements ought to be apprised together"--

Gendered Mediation takes an original, intersectional approach to these issues by building upon the gendered mediation thesis to argue that political communication and reporting reinforces impressions of politics as a masculine domain that privileges men and treats women as outsiders.     Abstract: Whilst many undocumented migrants in the United States continue to exist in the shadows, since the turn of the millennium an increasing number have emerged within public debate, casting themselves against the dominant discursive trope of the "illegal alien," and entering the struggle over political self-representation. Drawing on a range of life narratives published from 2001 to 2016, this book explores how undocumented migrants have represented themselves in various narrative forms in the context of the DREAM Act and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) movement. By reading these self-representations as both a product of America's changing views on citizenship and membership, and an arena where such views can potentially be challenged, the book interrogates the role such self-representations have played not only in constructing undocumented migrant identities, but also in shaping social borders. At a time when the inclusion and exclusion of (potential) citizens is once again highly debated in the United States, the book concludes by giving a potential indication of where views on undocumented migration might be headed. This interdisciplinary exploration of migrant narratives will be of interest to scholars and researchers across American Literary and Cultural Studies, Citizenship Studies, and Ethnic and Migration Studies.

    Abstract: In Islam and Gender in Colonial Northeast Africa, Silvia Bruzzi provides an account of Islamic movements and gender dynamics in the context of colonial rule in Northeast Africa. The thread that runs through the book is the life and times of Sittī ‘Alawiyya al-Mīrġanī (1892-1940), a representative of a well-established transnational Sufi order in the Red Sea region. Silvia Bruzzi gives us not only a social history of the colonial encounter in the Eritrean colony, but also a wider historical account of supra-regional dynamics across the Red Sea, the Ethiopian hinterland, and the Mediterranean region, using a wide range of fragmentary historical materials to make an important contribution towards filling the gap that currently exists in women's and gender history in Muslim societies.

    Abstract: Is queer really anti-identitarian? And how is it experienced at the European level? At queer festivals, activists, artists and participants come together to build new forms of sociability and practice their ideals through anti-binary and inclusive idioms of gender and sexuality.
