    Kurzfassung: "This book has been brought to life in a period where transnational solidarity and cooperation seemed to be moving backwards rather than forwards. This was among others reflected in the so called refugee crisis in Europe in 2015. After the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom in June 2016, and presidential elections in the US later the same year, the political agenda took a turn towards focusing primarily on the internal national perspective in relation to areas such as environmental protection, aid to countries in the Third World and trade with the outside world. It still remains to be seen when and how the United Kingdom will be leaving the European Union. In general, the EU has experienced a number of crises, among others an economic and financial crisis and later the refugee crisis, during the past years. These crises have challenged transnational solidarity in Europe. This development in Europe and the World stresses the question, whether and how transnational solidarity is possible. This book is motivated by these developments and discusses and attempts to answer this question. Our main presumption is that solidarity can create stability and sustainability (social, economic, environmental, peace etc.), within states, regions and globally, why it is crucial to gain more knowledge about it. Realization of the UN Sustainability Goals 2017 and 2030 go hand in hand with solidarity at both local, regional and global levels. In this work, we do of course build on earlier discussions and investigations of solidarity"--

    Kurzfassung: Combining international political theory and EU studies, Richard Bellamy provides an original account of the democratic legitimacy of international organisations. He proposes a new interpretation of the EU's democratic failings and how they might be addressed. Drawing on the republican theory of freedom as non-domination, Bellamy proposes a way to combine national popular sovereignty with the pursuit of fair and equitable relations of non-domination among states and their citizens. Applying this approach to the EU, Bellamy shows that its democratic failings lie not with the democratic deficit at the EU level but with a democratic disconnect at the member state level. Rather than shifting democratic authority to the European Parliament, this book argues that the EU needs to reconnect with the different 'demoi' of the member states by empowering national parliaments in the EU policy-making process.

    Kurzfassung: "As we will demonstrate in this book, the new fault lines around globalization can no longer be fully captured along the classic redistributional left-right axis. In important respects, they run perpendicular to it. Since the end of the Cold War, parties of the mainstream Left and Right, which had transformed themselves in the decades before from 'class' to catch-all parties (Kirchheimer 1965), have converged further on pro-globalization positions on a range of issues, such as support for European integration, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and trade agreements such as TTIP. Even on immigration, probably the most divisive of the issues related to globalization, differences between the mainstream Left and Right have become much smaller than they used to be - both because mainstream left parties have distanced themselves from earlier experiments with multicultural policies and because Conservatives have, at least in large parts of Western Europe, embraced pro-immigration views"--

Within the domain of the political, time is required for almost any exercise of liberty that people seek to protect through the enforcement of social contracts, constitutions, and laws. Time is therefore inextricable from the realization of any vision of political justice. All political subjects encounter myriad ways in which their time is structured, valued, appropriated, or freed by the state. In the United States, we wait to turn 18 to acquire political voice and full representation. Then we wait again, to turn 62 or 66, when we can retire from work and receive retirement benefits, if we wish. People file taxes on April 15; redistricting hinges on decennial censuses; and prosecutors specify when crimes were committed to determine whether statutes of limitation have expired. Around us convicted criminals are punished with prison sentences of varying durations, legal permanent residents refrain from traveling for long periods of time as they seek to naturalize, and election cycles run their course only to begin anew. Despite the significance of time for the satisfaction of people's ends, the legitimate power of the state to command the time of its subjects and set a political schedule is not generally contested"--

    Kurzfassung: "Politicising Europe presents the most comprehensive contribution to empirical research on politicisation to date. The study is innovative in both conceptual and empirical terms. Conceptually, the contributors develop and apply a new index and typology of politicisation. Empirically, the volume presents a huge amount of original data, tracing politicisation in a comparative perspective over more than forty years. Focusing on six European countries (Austria, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK) from the 1970s to the current euro crisis, the book examines conflicts over Europe in election campaigns, street protests, and public debates on every major step in the integration process. It shows that European integration has indeed become politicised. However, the patterns and developments differ markedly across countries and arenas, and many of the key hypotheses on the driving forces of change need to be revisited in view of new findings"--

Da auch nach dem "Ende" der kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen keinesfalls von Frieden gesprochen werden kann, sind in dieser Situation ebenfalls Modelle für ein Zusammenleben unterschiedlicher Gruppen erforderlich. Das vorliegende Buch analysiert in der Praxis erprobte Ansätze zu einer erfolgversprechenden Konfliktregulierung: etwa Vorkehrungen zum Minderheitenschutz, bilaterale Abkommen, Konkordanzmodelle und territoriale Lösungen. Durch den Vergleich gelungener und gescheiterter Versuche - von Südtirol bis Katalonien, von Nordirland bis Kosovo - werden Bedingungen für eine erfolgreiche Konfliktlösung genannt.

    Kurzfassung: This book radically revises established knowledge in comparative welfare state studies and introduces a new perspective on how religion shaped modern social protection systems. The interplay of societal cleavage structures and electoral rules produced the different political class coalitions sustaining the three welfare regimes of the Western world. In countries with proportional electoral systems the absence or presence of state–church conflicts decided whether class remained the dominant source of coalition building or whether a political logic not exclusively based on socio-economic interests (e.g. religion) was introduced into politics, particularly social policy. The political class-coalitions in countries with majoritarian systems, on the other hand, allowed only for the residual-liberal welfare state to emerge, as in the US or the UK. This book also reconsiders the role of Protestantism. Reformed Protestantism substantially delayed and restricted modern social policy. The Lutheran state churches positively contributed to the introduction of social protection programs.

    Kurzfassung: Die uns vertrauten Formen demokratischer Beteiligung und Repräsentation sind auf die Nationalstaaten zugeschnitten. Jenseits nationalstaatlicher Souveränität wird es allerdings schwierig mit der Demokratie. Es gibt Weltwirtschaft, Weltrecht Weltpolitik und Weltkommunikation - von globaler Demokratie kann dabei bisher wohl keine Rede sein. Kann die Weltgesellschaft demokratisch gestaltet werden? Bedarf es hierzu noch zentraler und hierarchischer Instanzen der Gesetzgebung und Durchsetzung? Oder können wir uns einfach auf die ungesteuerte, vielleicht unsteuerbare Evolution dezentraler Netzwerke verlassen? Wächst eine medial erzeugte transnationale Zivilgesellschaft? In diesen Studien plädiert er erneut für eine offene pluralistische Gesellschaft, die sich über die Idee der Vermeidung von Diskriminierung und über den Gedanken der "Einbeziehung des Anderen" konstituiert; er verteidigt sein diskurstheoretisches Programm in Auseinandersetzung mit John Rawls; er problematisiert den Begriff der Nation und das vermeintliche Recht auf Selbstbestimmung; er befaßt sich mit der Durchsetzung von Menschenrechten und mit Kants Idee des "Ewigen Friedens"; schließlich verweist er auf den internen Zusammenhang von Rechtsstaat und Demokratie.     Kurzfassung: Klappentext: "Diskursethik" bezeichnet ein Begründungsprogramm normativer philosophischer Moraltheologie, das die kommunikative Vernunft als die einzige Quelle auszeichnet, die unter den wertpluralistischen und rationalitätsskeptischen Bedingungen der Moderne eine rational definitive Rechtfertigung allgemeinverbindlicher moralischer Verpflichtungen gestattet. Die Arbeit an diesem Begründungsprogramm, die sich bislang überwiegend auf die Vertiefung und Absicherung diskursethischer Grundprinzipien konzentrierte, hat inzwischen einen Stand erreicht, der die Diskussion über die geschichtsbezogene Anwendung der Diskursethik fordert. Die in diesen Band aufgenommenen Aufsätze internationaler Autoren behandeln wichtige Ausschnitte aus dieser Diskussion: Konsensuelle Vernunft im Verhältnis zu Politik und Recht; Gegen die liberalistische Halbierung kommunikativer Vernunft; Zur Politik bestimmter Diskurse; Grundrechte, Meinungsfreiheit, "Euthanasie", Gentechnologie; Zum diskursethischen Theorie-Praxis-Verhältnis.
