Abstract: Playing with Nan is the story of a Nepali young man who migrated to work in a Nepali restaurant in northern Japan. The film explores his daily life at work and his family at home, which reflects socio-cultural problems related to globalization. Twenty-eight years ago, Ram was born in a rural village in Nepal. Working on the farm Ram saw little hope apart from surviving in the poor conditions. One day he decided to escape from the village and poverty. In Kathmandu he worked for 12 years at several restaurants. However, he could not change the family's situation. He heard a beautiful story from a broker about the work and earning opportunities in Japan. He paid the broker 20,000 USD to buy a work visa to enter in Japan. He borrowed the money from his relatives and friends with the commitment of paying back them later with a 20% interest. Several dramatic consequences occurred within Ram's life and his family's after his migration to Japan.

Abstract: The film depicts the daily struggle of fishermen to earn a living in a harsh physical environment that brings out the social and economic tensions of modern society. Manning the Priamo are Cola, the captain, Ahmed, the Tunisian first mate, two Italian engineers, and two Tunisian seamen. At sea for three weeks at a time, they fish off the coasts of Libya and Tunisia, sometimes outside the fishing limits and risking interception by the authorities. An intimate account of remoteness: after a few days on shore, the men leave their homes and families for a month. Night and day the nets are cast every four hours; the work is demanding and poorly paid; the quarters are cramped and uncomfortable; conflicts and prejudices surface amidst the roar of the engines and the sea. Beyond the horizon lies Africa, where immigrants embark for Europe, leaving their homes and families behind in the hope of finding a better life.

Abstract: "What happens to African migrants once granted political refugee status? In Turin, a northern Italian city, an abandoned clinic has been squatted by more than 200 refugees since December 2008. Khaled, Shukri and Ali have been travelling through hell in order to arrive in Italy. They crossed the border and are determined to have a normal life. Their hopes are dashed and they find their lives "suspended." The film follows their stories over the years, showing life in the clinic, including the inevitable internal problems, the protests of citizenship and the initiatives of the city. Through the cold winter and unbearably sultry August, until the evacuation of the former clinic by the city authorities and the transfer of refugees to old barracks. Three emblematic characters guide us through a story that reveals, intimately, a collective history, an emblematic tale of all European countries today and their respective immigration policies and the changes occurring in the social fabric of European cities."--Original container.

Abstract: In Ceriana, a village in West Liguria on the southern slopes of the Italian Alps descending to the Mediterranean coast, people love to sing. Among not less than five choirs, The Compagnia Sacco, founded in 1926, is the most committed to preserve the traditional drone polyphony. Different from Corsican and Sardinian polyphonies (but similar to East Georgian table songs), the local three-part singing is characterized by two solo voices and the drone of the choir.

Keywords: Fertility clinics ; South Africa ; Nonfiction films.
Abstract: Breeding Cells is a film from the laboratory of reproduction. A fertility clinic is a place where human reproduction is separated from sex and anatomized into bio/technological components. There fertilization is made visible and manipulable on a cellular level while the couples themselves seem to become marginal participants in a process that involves a large number of different professionalized agents and technologies. Recorded in the ward of reproductional medicine at Charite Hospital Berlin, this documentary approaches a scientific environment with an experimental ethnographic gaze. The filmmakers meet an open and quite unexcited "fertility team", who consider themselves simply assistants of nature. But what is nature in a hospital environment that is highly regulated by procedural methods, doctors conventions and conservative laws? Closely describing the routines and moral concerns of the medical staff, the film is portraying a transition time, when biotechnological science fiction is turning into everyday life.

Keywords: Child soldiers. ; History ; Bhutan ; Documentary films.
Abstract: Returned follows several Nepali child soldiers including Asha, a young Nepali girl, who was sent home from the Maoists' People's Liberation Army after the ceasefire. Asha joined the Maoist army when she was 14-years-old. For this young low caste girl, joining the Maoists was a pathway to a future with education and employment. Despite two years of being on the frontlines, her biggest concern was what would await her when she returned home. Would she turn to commercial sex work, become a domestic slave, or would she be banished from her home and forced into marriage?
Abstract: Long version: Imagine being forced to leave your family and fight in war you don't understand - and you are only eleven years old. Sadly, for many of these child soldiers in Nepal this is a reality and the peace process has not solved their problems. These children quickly discovered that the return home is even more painful than the experience of war.

We can see on the one hand peasant activities such as mowing, transporting wooden logs, milking and calling cattle, as well as people sitting together at home or in the local inn and on the other hand, a folk festival featuring wrestling and alphorn playing and the yearly concert of the local yodel choir. Abstract: Four manners of yodelling and yootzing take place on the same day. The Yodel Mass, written in Swiss German dialect by the composer Jost Marty, is conducted by the director of the yodel choir in the church organ loft. Following that is a traditional local yootz arranged for the yodel choir — also performed in the church as a Bach choral would be — which, in a way, makes the profane become sacred. At dinner in a restaurant, a locally well-known traditional yootzer family performs for the wedding party. In the evening some villagers can be found in another inn performing not for an audience this time, but for their own pleasure. The wedding party also appreciates local customs such as large cowbell ringing, whip cracking and diatonic accordion playing to accompany dancing.

Abstract: Innovative graphic animations with sync sound visualize the features of both musical structure and performance technique related not only to traditional local voice characteristics but also to the polished yodelling of a renowned soloist performing at yodel festivals. The film also shows the connections with instrumental music, such as the small alphorn and the diatonic accordion. This documentary is a very rare example of elements of musical structure and performance being explained through visual means (another example is the filmmaker's The Song of Harmonics).

Abstract: Walking up to the summer alpine pastures is a yearly event that both people and cattle look forward to! Cattle calls, yootzing in the stable while milking, calling an alpine blessing through a milk funnel, yootzing together in the evening in the alpine chalet these are elements that many local people like to see, elements that reflect the idealized past of this people of herdsmen, as Swiss people like to call themselves. At the end of the film, an unexpected message reveals that real life was not as idyllic as it seems. It is a rare case of a film revealing its making of (years before the extras in DVDs became popular).
