Und ist die Zeit des Originals nicht überhaupt vorbei? Dabei tritt die Frage, was ein Original eigentlich sei, oft in den Hintergrund. Doris Reisinger stellt die These auf: Der Begriff des Originals ist nicht nur nicht obsolet, er hat auch nicht notwendig mit Neuheit, Urheberschaft oder ästhetischem Wert zu tun - das Problem des Originalbegriffs besteht schlicht darin, dass seine komplexe Struktur verkannt wird. Vor diesem Ausgangspunkt erarbeitet sie einen Explikationsvorschlag, der die Beantwortung einer ganzen Reihe von Fragen dieser klassischen philosophischen Debatte erlaubt

    Abstract: In seinem neuen Buch rekonstruiert Axel Honneth die Idee der Anerkennung in der Vielfalt der Bedeutungen, die sie seit Beginn der Moderne in Europa angenommen hat. Mit Blick auf drei wirkmächtige europäische Denktraditionen - die französische, die britische und die deutsche - zeichnet er nach, wie sie aufgrund unterschiedlicher politisch-sozialer Herausforderungen jeweils ganz verschiedene philosophische Interpretationen und gesellschaftspolitische Ausprägungen erfahren hat. Während in Frankreich mit "reconnaissance" die Gefahr des individuellen Selbstverlustes assoziiert wird, gilt der Prozess der "recognition" in Großbritannien als Bedingung der normativen Selbstkontrolle; und hierzulande meint Anerkennung auch die Vollzugsform allen wahren Respekts unter Menschen. Erstaunlich ist, dass keine dieser drei Bedeutungen, deren Wurzeln bis ins 17. Jahrhundert zurückreichen, in der Gegenwart an Einfluss verloren hat. Ob sie sich heute eher ergänzen oder gegenseitig im Weg stehen, zeigt diese Studie, die auch einen Beitrag zur Klärung unseres aktuellen politisch-kulturellen Selbstverständnisses leistet

    Abstract: Through a careful survey of several significant Platonic texts, mainly focussing on the nature of knowledge, Essays on Plato's Epistemology offers the reader a fresh and promising approach to Plato's philosophy as a whole. From the very earliest reception of Plato's philosophy, there has been a conflict between a dogmatic and a sceptical interpretation of his work and thought. Moreover, the two sides are often associated, respectively, with a metaphysical and an anti-metaphysical approach. This book, continuing a line of thought that is nowadays strongly present in the secondary literature -- and also followed by the author in over thirty years of research -- maintains that a third way of thinking is required. Against the widespread view that an anti-dogmatic philosophy must go together with an anti-metaphysical stance, Trabattoni shows that for Plato, on the contrary, a sober and reasonable assessment of both the powers and limits of human reason relies on a proper metaphysical outlook

    Abstract: Liberty and Equality in Political Economy is an evolutionary account of the ongoing debate between two narratives: Locke and liberty versus Rousseau and equality. The authors argue that the debate initiated between Locke and Rousseau continues to define political economy today. Mit ihrer kritischen Neulektüre von Vilém Flusser und Mark Weiser legt Suzana Alpsancar zwei symptomatische Computerkonzepte im Diskurs des Digitalen frei. Sie zeigt, dass eine Reflexion der Gestaltungsmacht von Computern neben typischen Gebrauchsweisen gerade auch auf ihre potenzielle Widerständigkeit als Dinge abheben muss, um ihre Medialität angemessen erfassen zu können.

It begins by examining two seminal works by Nicholas of Cusa: De pace fidei, a dialogue seeking peace among world religions written after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and Cribratio Alkorani (1460-61), an attempt to confirm Gospel truths through a critical reading of the Qur'an.     Abstract: This book investigates the re-discovery of Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed by the Wissenschaft des Judentums movement in Germany of the nineteenth and beginning twentieth Germany. Since this movement is inseparably connected with religious reforms that took place at about the same time, it shall be demonstrated how the Reform Movement in Judaism used the Guide for its own agenda of historizing, rationalizing and finally turning Judaism into a philosophical enterprise of 'ethical monotheism'. The study follows the reception of Maimonidean thought, and the Guide specifically, through the nineteenth century, from the first beginnings of early reformers in 1810 and their reading of Maimonides to the development of a sophisticated reform-theology, based on Maimonides, in the writings of Hermann Cohen more then a hundred years later.

    Abstract: Racial and ethnic categories have appeared in recent scientific work in novel ways and in relation to a variety of disciplines: medicine, forensics, population genetics and also developments in popular genealogy. Once again, biology is foregrounded in the discussion of human identity. Of particular importance is the preoccupation with origins and personal discovery and the increasing use of racial and ethnic categories in social policy. This new genetic knowledge, expressed in technology and practice, has the potential to disrupt how race and ethnicity are debated, managed and lived. The contributors include medical researchers, anthropologists, historians of science and sociologists of race relations; together, they explore the new and challenging landscape where biology becomes the stuff of identity

Lemke teilt die Kritik dieser und anderer Autoren an den Strukturen und Folgen der industriellen Nahrungsmittelproduktion einerseits und dem Konsumentenverhalten, das den Strategien der Nahrungsmittelkonzerne entspricht, andererseits. Ihm geht es um die Erkenntnis der Gastrosophie (politische Philosophie des Essens), dass Essen politisch ist.     Abstract: This work presents and philosophically analyzes the early modern and modern history of the theory concerning the soul of the world, anima mundi. The initial question of the investigation is why there was a revival of this theory in the time of the early German Romanticism, whereas the concept of the anima mundi had been rejected in the earlier, classical period of European philosophy (early and mature Enlightenment). The presentation and analysis starts from the Leibnizian-Wolffian school, generally hostile to the theory, and covers classical eighteenth-century physico-theology, also reluctant to accept an anima mundi. Next, it discusses early modern and modern Christian philosophical Cabbala (Böhme and Ötinger), an intellectual tradition which to some extent tolerated the idea of a soul of the world. The philosophical relationship between Spinoza and Spinozism on the one hand, and the anima mundi theory on the other is also examined. An analysis of Giordano Bruno's utilization of the concept anima del mondo is the last step before we give an account of how and why German Romanticism, especially Baader and Schelling asserted and applied the theory of the Weltseele. The purpose of the work is to prove that the philosophical insufficiency of a concept of God as an ens extramundanum instigated the Romantics to think an anima mundi that can act as a divine and quasi-infinite intermediary between God and Nature, as a locum tenens of God in physical reality.
