Abstract: Part 1: The Beginnings of Mathematical Logic in Vienna -- Part 2. Report of the Seminar on Mathematical Logic -- Part 3. Godel's Trial Lecture on Instutionistic Logic.
Abstract: Kurt Gödel (1906-1978) created a sensation by his incompleteness theorems of 1931, now seen as one of the high points of 20th century mathematics and science more generally. His professor at the University of Vienna Hans Hahn decided to organize a seminar on mathematical logic for the academic year 1931/32, with Gödel in charge for most of the practical side. The seminar proceedings, given in English translation in this book, are a unique witness of the state of research in logic and foundations of mathematics right after Gödel's theorems. They also add an important aspect to the intellectual history of these times in Vienna, both Hahn and Gödel having been members of the Vienna Circle. One fourth of the seminars were dedicated to Gödel's results: First the doctoral thesis about the completeness of predicate logic, then incompleteness, and last his results on intuitionistic logic. The seminars explain all these results in detail, in contrast to Gödel's publications of the time that often were quite laconic and extremely short. This book also contains Gödel's trial lecture on intuitionistic logic held in Vienna in 1933. The manuscript, recently found among the Gödel papers kept in Princeton, is preserved in Gödel's forgotten German shorthand and published here in an English translation. .

Abstract: This open access book analyses the ever-complex relationship between immigration and health in contemporary societies using the Spanish society as a case study. It addresses some of the main dimensions of migrant health in Spain, including migrant-specific vulnerability factors, health changes associated with time spent at the migratory destination, and differentiated problems of certain subpopulations of migrants. The book also examines some of the factors associated with migrant health and explores the mechanisms that might explain this nexus, such as early childhood development, adult and older age health conditions, health practices and coping skills, health culture, social support, physical environment, and access to medical care and health services. While contributing to the effort to create a more comprehensive view of the health status and outcomes of immigrants in developed societies, the book will prove to be a valuable resource to academics, health professionals, various levels of stakeholders and decision-makers, representatives of civil society, and NGOs.

Abstract: This book focuses on the implications of the common themes and works on three urgent tasks for bioethicists. Are there common themes between transhumanism and the WHO framework for global governance of human genome editing? If yes, what are the implications of that? To find possible common themes, the author applied the reflective thematic analysis (RTA) method to a set of texts on transhumanism and a set of texts on the global governance of human genome editing. The transhumanist texts were the three documents Humanity+, the former World Transhumanist Association, calls the “original documents on transhumanism” (the Transhumanist Declaration, Transhumanist FAQ 3.0, the Transhumanist Manifesto v.4). The selected texts to represent the current global governance of human genome editing were the three documents published by WHO on the topic in 2021 (human genome editing: a framework for governance, human genome editing: recommendations, human genome editing: position paper): the only plan for the global governance of HGE to date. As a result of his application of the RTA method, he found three common themes. What does this mean for our society? What are the implications of the current situation? What are the tasks for bioethics? There are emerging questions on the human condition and new concerns to be addressed, such as the do-it-yourself mentality. The limits of “therapy vs. enhancement” ask for serious work on a bioethical framework for enhancement. Finally, the authors question the predominant values and propose a refinement to some conceptions of autonomy, protection, and equality. Recognising the current situation and working on the identified tasks has become crucial for contemporary Bioethics.

Abstract: The authors Matteo Collodel and Eric Oberheim take the reader on a journey through the early life of the famous Austrian philosopher Paul Feyerabend, whose groundbreaking work Against the Method forged new paths in the philosophical understanding of science. Collodel and Oberheim's book contains the translated correspondence of Feyerabend (1924-1994) with equally influential philosophers and scientists of the time, including Rudolf Carnap, Herbert Feigl, Carl G. Hempel, J.J.C. Smart, David Bohm, and Thomas Kuhn. This book offers an entirely unique approach to the philosopher Paul Feyerabend. Informative, challenging and profound, it immerses the reader deeply in the mind of a truly revolutionary philosopher of science. The main focus lies on the explanation of Paul Feyerabend's ideas on logical empiricism and quantum mechanics, which he developed especially in the 1960s. In order to appreciate the celebrated work of the philosopher, it is important to create an understanding of these formative years in Feyerabend's life and work. Anyone who knows similar discussions, like the paradigm shift of Thomas Kuhn, or has a passion for history, philosophy and science will be fascinated by the works of Paul Feyerabend. As scientists and followers of Feyerabend, Collodel and Oberheim strive to pay respect to the philosopher and to make his work accessible to a whole new generation.

Abstract: This book highlights the latest technological innovations in economics education. Economics, as a discipline, not only studies the relationship between ends and scarce means, which can be used alternatively, but also serves as a social science that uses historical data to predict future events—a task complicated by the influence of human behavior. In economics, a solid theoretical foundation alone is insufficient; practical application requires a deep understanding of statistics. With the vast amount of information available today, data processing is now performed using specialized software. Consequently, teaching economics demands a wide range of complex skills that have significantly evolved in recent years, driven by the growing interest in educational innovation among professors and scientists, further accelerated by advancements in new technologies. Moreover, economics education is increasingly aligned with the global concern for sustainability, as emphasized in the United Nations' Agenda 2030. Professors are now integrating sustainability into syllabi and teaching methodologies. This book covers key topics such as: Technological and innovative advancements in economics education. New teaching-learning theories and models in economics education. The impact of digital transformation on economics education. The role of artificial intelligence in economics education. Addressing special educational needs in economics education. Evaluation of the teaching-learning process in economics. Assessment of student learning in economics. Development of materials and tools for economics education. Final projects (Undergraduate and Master's) in economics. Authored by leading professors and researchers in the field, this book presents a collection of chapters that rigorously explore teaching innovations in economics.
Note: "Teaching Innovations in Economics. Towards a Sustainable World is one of the outcomes to emerge from the First International Conference on Teaching Innovations in Economics organized by the International Association of Applied Economics ASEPELT (www.asepelt.org), which was held at the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche on July 19, 2024. While it is the first such product, there will be many more because ASEPELT fully believes that teaching innovations in economics must hold a privileged position in university education in this field." - Seite x

Abstract: In this volume, the concept of "medical neutrality," which states that medical services should not be interfered with during armed conflicts and other emergencies, is challenged based on the experience and expertise of the authors, who come from diverse military, humanitarian, and academic backgrounds. The principle of medical neutrality is grounded in International Humanitarian Law as well as in Human Rights Law and it can be justified by ethical rationales such as the principle of Humanity and ordinary medical ethics. Health workers often understand medical neutrality as an obligation not to engage in anything else other than medical outcomes. In this book, a variety of problems and ethical issues in the application of medical neutrality in the professional practice of healthcare personnel are analyzed. The contributors expand the debate around “medical neutrality” and aim at better-informing policy and operational decisions regarding the application of medical ethics, the protection of medical missions in conflict, and the training of healthcare professionals to operate ethically and safely in volatile environments. The volume is of great interest to academics, practitioners, policymakers, and students who are looking for analyses and guidance regarding medical neutrality.

Part I of the current volume contains eight chapters: The first lead chapter includes an Audit of Antisemitic Incidents in 2023 produced by the ADL, and the second chapter examines Denominational Identity and Jewish Engagement. Subsequent chapters analyze recent domestic and international events as they affect the American Jewish community, major events in the past year, and the demography and geography of the US, Canada, and World Jewish populations. Part II contains nine chapters: lists of local Jewish organizations; Jewish museums, and Holocaust museums and monuments; overnight camps; national Jewish organizations; Jewish press; Jewish academic programs; Jewish academic resources; Jewish honorees; and Jewish obituaries. This volume employs an accessible style, making it of interest to public officials, Jewish professional and lay leaders, as well as the general public and academic researchers. For more than a century, the American Jewish Year Book has served as an indispensable compendium of Jewish demographic trends, research and data. It is considered a must-read for data scientists, demographers, community leaders or anyone interested in the trends that make up the lifeblood of the Jewish experience in America. We are proud of our contributions to this essential resource. —Jonathan A. Greenblatt, CEO and National Director of ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) The American Jewish Year Book is a unique resource of tremendous value to anyone interested in global Jewish life. It is critical for people today, and it will be for those who come after us. Its lists capture not only critical information about key aspects of Jewish communal life, but provide the opportunity for reflection, comparison, and analysis with other religious and ethnic communities. —Riv-Ellen Prell, Professor Emerita, American Studies and the Center for Jewish Studies, University of Minnesota.

Abstract: To mark the 300th anniversary of Adam Smith’s birth, the 37th Heilbronn Symposium on Economics and the Social Sciences was dedicated to his outstanding oeuvre, but above all to his most famous work, “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations” (1776), which is regarded as a keystone of modern economics. The influence of Smith’s doctrine has made a lasting contribution to the development of a modern understanding of society and the economy and, in particular, the functioning of markets. This is not least because of the breadth of his approach, with overlaps between political economy, social philosophy and ethics. The planned volume builds on the current state of Smith research and also provides new insights into the dissemination of Smith’s ideas in German-speaking countries, but also in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.
Note: 2023 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Scottish philosopher and economist Adam Smith, reason enough to dedicate a special conference to this pioneering thinker - in our case the 37th Heilbronn Symposium entitled “300 Years of Adam Smith: Reception and Infuence in Germany.” - Seite 1

Abstract: This book rigorously examines the air transport market liberalisation process on the African continent and presents key highlights, challenges, and impediments to embracing an “open skies” market environment in Africa. It focuses on the economic impact of air transport liberalisation, policy constraints, challenges of harmonisation, and regional economic integration and its impact on air transport development, employing a quantitative assessment based on the Air Transport Liberalisation Index (ALI) to evaluate how an open skies policy would change the competitive dynamics of air transport in Africa. Adopting a two-tier gravity model, it explores how demand and route networks would be impacted by the deregulation of the air transport market. It also applies a historical perspective by evaluating the initial ratification of the Yamoussoukro Declaration (1999), which acted as a catalyst for Africa’s 2063 regional agenda, focused on establishing the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), exploring its multifaceted impacts on Africa’s single market from economic, regulatory, and sustainability perspectives. It examines the capacity and competency building of African aviation personnel. Training gaps and skills are extensively evaluated to ensure that the African region is prepared for the “new” competitive equilibrium post SAATM. Moreover, the book raises critical questions regarding the status of the African air transport market. This book i978-3-031-61863-5transport landscape.

Abstract: This volume is the first manual book to address fire-cracked rock (FCR) or fire-affected rock analysis, thus filling a significant gap in the market and in the existing literature. This book develops a method and theory for how FCR was used, to familiarize readers with a new approach to FCR analysis. The book provides a history and background of fire-cracked rock and leads the reader through the entire process of identifying, categorizing, and analyzing FCR and related features, from the first steps through to interpretations of function, use-alteration, fracturing patterns, experimentation, ethnographic/ethnohistoric uses, and so forth. In addition to exploring the fundamentals of FCR analysis, the book will also cover new and cutting-edge techniques. This manual is designed to walk archaeologists from step one of FCR analysis to final advanced interpretations of use. It is meant to serve as a laboratory and field guide for students and professionals, containing illustrations, photographs, and case studies in order to familiarize readers with the identification and analysis process while also providing a theoretical and methodological guide for advance academic and cultural resource management research. Thus, this book is meant to target a wide global audience and spatiotemporal range, spanning hundreds of millennia of the human experience, from paleoanthropology and the early adoption of fire through to the present. Where FCR was once simply quantified according to weight and size, this book will transform it into a significant diagnostic artifact in the study of ancient foodways and domestic life. At sites where organic preservation is poor to non-existent, and the quotidian sphere is obscure, the use of FCR to determine cooking methods and everyday life will come as a breakthrough. This will be a pioneering manual for the study of FCR, focusing on the ways practicing archaeologists can infer function from their FCR collections.

Abstract: This book collects a multidisciplinary range of contributions focusing on the prolific and seminal work of Willem Drees in the fields of philosophy of religion, philosophy of the humanities, and science and theology/religion. Trained in both theoretical physics and theology/philosophy of religion, Drees holds doctoral degrees in both theology and in philosophy and, amongst other distinguished positions, held professorships at the University of Leiden and at the University of Tilburg. Drees was also Editor-in-Chief of Zygon, Journal of Religion & Science, between 2008 and 2018, and served as President of the European Society for the Study of Science and Theology (ESSSAT) between 2002 and 2008. In 2018, he was elected as member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW). This contributed volume builds on Drees’ expansive and provocative scholarly contributions, notably around the concept and meaning of naturalism and the humanities to the fields of science and religion, as exemplified by his works Religion, Science and Naturalism (1996) and What Are the Humanities For? (2021). In a time where more and more young people across the globe are entering higher education such cross-disciplinary explorations and (re-)evaluations are vital to the field. Accordingly, by approaching his work from a variety of disciplines this collection illuminates the broad reach of Drees’ work and provides scholars from various fields with many new and rich opportunities avenues for research.

Stein’s Spiritual Influences -- Chapter 5. Personal Relation and Community: the Spiritual Life as Expressive.
Abstract: This book examines and elucidates the concept of spirit in Stein’s philosophical work, particularly the role it plays in her philosophical anthropology and her understanding of intersubjectivity and community. Although she draws from and synthesizes the ideas of thinkers such as Husserl, Dilthey, and Conrad-Martius, Stein’s approach is distinctive and uniquely suited to comprehensively addressing these topics and questions. Despite the significance of the notion of spirit, however, very little Stein scholarship focuses directly on examining it, and there has never been an attempt to trace its development over the whole of Stein’s corpus. This book fills this lacuna by undertaking a comprehensive study of Stein’s understanding of spirit. The author argues that the key to understanding Stein’s notion of spirit is to understand it as expressive, and in so doing to recognize expression as a fundamental characteristic of the human person. This view of the person as expressive provides an understanding of the person as an embodied being that lives in the world and shares it with other embodied beings, but in this very living and sharing, moves beyond the material bounds of embodiment and constitutes the world as a world of meaning and value. The notion of expression is not only crucial to making sense of Stein’s own account of spirit, but furthermore, provides a way of understanding the person as inextricably bound up in community without compromising the individual. In going out toward others in spiritual expression, one not only forms community with the other; one also becomes more oneself. Thus, Stein’s understanding of spirit as fundamentally expressive helps make sense of what it means to be an individual human being and what it means to be a part of the human community. This volume appeals to students and scholars working in phenomenology.

Abstract: In the 21st century, the imperative for sustainable development has assumed a paramount role, echoing the pressing global concerns surrounding environmental degradation, social inequalities, and economic challenges. Within this context, Sub-Saharan Africa emerges as a region of particular significance, where the pursuit of sustainability holds immense promise and relevance. Despite being endowed with abundant natural resources and a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, Sub-Saharan Africa grapples with enduring issues of poverty, inequality, and environmental harm. This book explores the innovative paradigms of sustainable finance and business within Sub-Saharan Africa, exploring how novel approaches can effectively tackle the region's most pressing challenges while simultaneously catalyzing economic growth and societal progress. The chapters presented here comprise a diverse array of cutting-edge financial strategies, circular economy initiatives, technological advancements, and business models that are revolutionizing sustainable development across the continent. Sub-Saharan Africa, characterized by its youthful demographic and rapidly expanding economies, is poised for transformation. Yet, it confronts formidable obstacles in the form of poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer a comprehensive framework to address these issues. However, realizing these objectives requires innovative solutions that can surmount the unique constraints of the region. Fortunately, Sub-Saharan Africa is a crucible of innovation, with a growing community of entrepreneurs, financiers, and decision-makers committed to sustainable development. Initiatives promoting circular economies are reducing waste and enhancing resource efficiency, while financial instruments like impact investing and green bonds are attracting new streams of funding. Simultaneously, technological breakthroughs such as mobile payment systems and renewable energy solutions are expanding access to essential services and driving economic expansion. Despite these encouraging advancements, Sub-Saharan Africa stands at a pivotal juncture in its journey towards sustainability. This book, with a focus on practical and scalable solutions, endeavors to showcase the most promising and successful models that can propel sustainable development across the region.

Abstract: Frameworki bardzo ułatwiają życie programistom. Framework napisany w Pythonie Flask, w odróżnieniu od typowych frameworków, umożliwia swobodne dobieranie technologii i komponentów aplikacji, a nawet tworzenie własnych rozwiązań. Oznacza to, że Flask pozwoli Ci zachować pełną kontrolę nad budowanym oprogramowaniem!

Abstract: Przedsiębiorstwa z branży technologicznej ciągle mierzą się z silną konkurencją.

Abstract: This book is considered as a monograph but also as a potential textbook for graduate students, focusing on the application of FCMs for modelling and analysing the behaviour of multicomponent systems. In the last two decades, no monograph or textbook has been published on the topic Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM), so this new book is definitely filling a gap in the literature of computational intelligence. The book is built up didactically, the novel results in the field being presented in the way of starting with two real-life case studies, one in the area of waste management, while the other one in modelling bank management systems. In both cases, the book starts with explaining the applied problem and then presenting how the model construction is done and what problems emerge when attempts are made for applying directly earlier results on FCM modelling. In the first case study, the problem of the oversimplification leads to inadequacy of the model, and then it is shown how new, much finer models can be built up based on expert domain knowledge. Then, the new problem of losing transparency and interpretability emerges, and as a solution, a new algorithm family is proposed that reduces FCMs to fewer components, while preserving the essential characteristics of the original model. The second case study raises the problems of stability and sensitivity of FCMs, especially, considering that expert knowledge is often uncertain and subjective. The new results summarised in the book target the questions of how to ascertain whether an FCM is converging to one or several fixed point attractors, whether there is a bifurcation when parameters are changing, etc. Both problems deal with the ultimate question whether the system modelled is stable and sustainable.

The influence of tactical urbanism and perceived in-security on bicycle usage -- Changing cycling practices and Covid cycle lanes in five French cities.
Abstract: This open access book provides insight on how the tactical urbanism has the capacity to influence change in mobility practices such as cycling. COVID-19 crisis prompted the public authorities to rethink the use of public space in order to develop means of transport that are both efficient and adapted to the health context and their effects on cycling practices in Europe, North, and South America. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through policies analysis, mapping, and innovative qualitative analysis bridging video and interviews, how those new infrastructures and policies can be a trigger for change in a context of mobility transition. This book provides an important element on the way local authorities can act in a quicker and more agile way. While some decisions are specific to the context of the beginning of the pandemic, the analysis offers lessons on the way to implement the transition toward a low-carbon mobility, on the importance of processes based on trials and errors, on the political stakes of reallocating road space.

Abstract: This open-access book explores the security dynamics amid the polarization, shifting borders, and liquid governance that define the Zeitenwende era in Europe's eastern neighbourhood and Central Asia. Presenting various case studies, the volume unveils the intricate web of border dynamics and practices, including the nuanced interplay of border disputes within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) member states. The contributions shed new light on how contested borders and liquid modes of governance have impacted the engagement of international organizations such as the European Union (EU), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and OSCE in security crises and conflict prevention. Delving deeper, a special part dissects the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and examines European and international responses. By analyzing the stances of diverse European countries, their neighborhood, and international organizations, this section uncovers commonalities and disparities in their approaches to the Ukrainian crisis.

Abstract: This open access book investigates whether and how theoretical findings and insights in contemporary art conservation can be translated into the daily work practices of conservators or, vice versa, whether and how the problems and dilemmas encountered in conservation practice can inform broader research questions and projects. For several decades now, the conservation of contemporary art has been a dynamic field of research and reflection. Because of contemporary art’s variable constitution, its care and management calls for a fundamental rethinking of the overall research landscape of museums, heritage institutions, private-sector organizations and universities. At first, this research was primarily pursued by conservation professionals working in or with museums and other heritage organizations, but increasingly academic researchers and universities became involved, for instance through collaborative projects. This book is the result of such collaboration. It sets out to bridge the “gap” between theory and practice by investigating conservation practices as a form of reflection and reflection as a form of practice.

Abstract: This volume explores Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics within a musical context. It features contributions from philosophers, musicians, educators, and musicologists from a variety of backgrounds, and sheds light on both the hermeneutic nature of music and the musicality of hermeneutics. Contributors to this volume hermeneutically think with music to uncover its fundamentally hermeneutic character, and by thinking with Gadamer in a musical context, explore ways in which hermeneutics may be understood to possess an inherent musicality. Gadamer's thought is taken up in a variety of musical contexts including improvisation, musical performance, classical music, jazz, and music criticism. This first volume to explore Gadamer's hermeneutics in a musical context breaks new ground by challenging musical concepts and by pushing Gadamer's thought in new directions. It appeals to philosophers engaged with Gadamer's thought (and philosophical hermeneutics more broadly), as well as philosophers of music, musicologists, and musicians interested in critically engaging with the practice of performing and listening to music.

Abstract: This book intends to focus exclusively on anamorphic experiments in contemporary art and design, leaving an in-depth historical examination of its Baroque season to other studies. Themes, languages and fields of application of anamorphosis in contemporary culture are critically analyzed to make the reader aware of the communicative potentiality of this kind of geometrical technique. The book also has the aim to teach the reader the most appropriate geometric techniques for each of them, in order to achieve the designed illusion. Each typology of anamorphosis is accompanied in this book by contemporary installations, a geometrical explanation by means of 3D models and didactic experiments carried on in collaboration with the students of the Department of Architecture in Naples.

Abstract: This Open Access book explains the philosophy, design principles, and community organization of Decidim and provides essential insights into how the platform works. Decidim is the world leading digital infrastructure for participatory democracy, built entirely and collaboratively as free software, and used by more than 500 institutions with over three million users worldwide. The platform allows any organization (government, association, university, NGO, neighbourhood, or cooperative) to support multitudinous processes of participatory democracy. In a context dominated by corporate-owned digital platforms, in the era of increasing social structuring via Artificial Intelligence, Decidim stands as a public or community owned platform for collective human intelligence. Yet, the project is much more than its technological features. Decidim is in itself a crossroad of the various dimensions of the networked society, a detailed practical map of its complexities and conflicts. The authors distinguish three general dimensions of the project: (1) the political - shedding light on the democratic model that Decidim promotes and its impact on public policies and organizations, (2) the technopolitical - explaining how this technology is democratically designed and managed to produce and protect certain political effects, and (3) the technical - presenting the conditions of production, operation, and success of the project. This book systematically covers those three levels in an academically sound, technologically consistent, and politically innovative manner. Serving as a useful resource and handbook for the use of Decidim, it will not only appeal to students and scholars interested in participatory and digital democracy but also to professionals, policy-makers, and a wider audience interested in learning more about the Decidim platform. This is an open access book.

Abstract: There are any number of studies on Turkish secularism. However, to date there has never been a comprehensive analysis of the constitutional protection of secularism, one that systematically covers all relevant aspects. Addressing that gap, this book presents a comprehensive and coherent analysis of the constitutional framework of this principle within the Turkish legal system. Secularism is a common fundamental principle of all three Turkish constitutions (1924, 1961, 1982). The principle has been granted an irrevocable status and has been strictly constructed within the Turkish constitutional system. Despite the guarantee of irrevocability, however, its interpretation and application have undergone a drastic transformation in response to changing social and political circumstances. Today, the complaints filed before the domestic and international judiciary predominantly concern the Turkish State’s neutrality and impartiality towards religion and the exercise of freedom of religion by religious minorities. While many observers have interpreted these problems in light of the contemporary policies pursued in the field of religion, a closer look reveals that the problem lies deeper in Turkey’s general constitutional framework. While the 1982 Constitution declares the principle as an unamendable characteristic of the Republic and protects it with multi-layered mechanisms, certain anti-democratic features of the Constitution, including the President’s predominant role in forming the high-ranking judiciary, affect the proper and consistent application of the principle of secularism. The consolidation of the secular state order depends on various factors other than a suitable constitution. However, it goes without saying that constitutions can help or hinder efforts to find solutions. Therefore, this book identifies the deficiencies in the Turkish constitutional and legal framework regarding the protection of secularism. It presents the historical development and definition of a secular state, analyzes the jurisprudence of the Turkish Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights, studies the application of the party prohibition mechanism as a means of protecting the principle, and assesses the constitutional amendments of 2001, 2010 and 2017. Moreover, it proposes much-needed constitutional and legal amendments with a view to improving the application of the principle of secularism.

Abstract: This volume contains for the first time in English, Jan Patočka’s seminal essay “The Phenomenology of Afterlife”, as well as contributions surrounding and analyzing this text. In his essay, Patočka reflects on our relation to the dead and on how the departure of a loved one affects our continued existence. The premise of Patočka’s investigation is that our existence always takes place by and through an originary and reciprocal “being for others”. The contributors in the volume extend the field of inquiry into the wider phenomenological and post-phenomenological discussion of death by being cognizant of how works of literature can broaden our understanding of the care of death, grief, forgiveness and non-reciprocal love. Also included are reflections on issues of philosophical anthropology, community, collective memory, and the ecstatic nature of life – issues that can all be related back to Patočka’s initial reflections, but which nonetheless radiate into a myriad of directions. This volume appeals to students and researchers in the field.

Abstract: This book chooses the topic which is due to the editors' experience in modeling projects in healthcare systems. Also, the transfer of experiences is the reason why mathematical modeling and decision making in the field of health are not given much attention. To this end, the new aspect of this book is the lack of reference needed to carry out projects in the field of health for researchers whose main expertise is not modeling. Students of health, mathematics, management, and industrial engineering fields are in the direct readership with this book. Different projects in the field of healthcare systems can use the topics presented in different chapters mentioned in this book.

Abstract: 1. Introduction -- 2. Fundamentals -- 3. Transparency Enhancement in Teleoperation -- 4. Multi-Agent Adaptive Shared Control -- 5. Stable and Transparent Shared Control Framework.
Abstract: Robotic research and developments in computing technologies including artificial intelligence have led to significant improvements in autonomous capabilities of robots. Yet, human supervision is advisable and, in many cases, necessary when robots interact with real-world, outside-lab environments. This is due to the fact that complete autonomy in robots has not yet been achieved. When robots encounter challenges beyond their capabilities, a viable solution is to include human operators in the loop, who can support robots through teleoperation, taking complete control or shared control. This monograph focuses on a special form of shared control, namely mixed-initiative, where the final command to the robot is a weighted sum of the commands from the operator and the autonomous controller. The weights (fixed or adaptive), called authority allocation (AA) factors, decide who has more control authority over the robot. Several research groups use different methods to adapt the AA factors online and the benefits of adaptive mixed-initiative shared control have been well established in terms of task completion success and operator usability. However, stability of the overall shared control framework, with communication time-delays between the operator and the robot, is a field that has not been examined extensively. This monograph presents methods to improve performance and stability in shared control so that the possibilities of its applications can be widened. Firstly, methods to improve the haptic feedback performance of teleoperation are developed. Secondly, methods to stabilize adaptive shared control systems, while still ensuring high teleoperation performance, are proposed. The methods are validated on multiple robotic systems and they were applied in several projects, both in space and terrestrial domains. With the aforementioned contributions, this monograph provides an overarching framework to improve synergy between humans and robots. The flexibility of the framework allows integration of existent teleoperation and shared control approaches, which further promotes synergy within the robotics community.

Abstract: This open access book explains how leading business organizations attempt to achieve the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced information technologies. These technologies can produce tremendous insights and benefits. But they can also invade privacy, perpetuate bias, and otherwise injure people and society. To use these technologies successfully, organizations need to implement them responsibly and ethically. The question is: how to do this? Data ethics management, and this book, provide some answers. The authors interviewed and surveyed data ethics managers at leading companies. They asked why these experts see data ethics as important and how they seek to achieve it. This book conveys the results of that research on a concise, accessible way. Much of the existing writing on data and AI ethics focuses either on macro-level ethical principles, or on micro-level product design and tooling. The interviews showed that companies need a third component: data ethics management. This third element consists of the management structures, processes, training and substantive benchmarks that companies use to operationalize their high-level ethical principles and to guide and hold accountable their developers. Data ethics management is the connective tissue makes ethical principles real. It is the focus of this book. This book should be of use to organizations that wish to improve their own data ethics management efforts, legislators and policymakers who hope to build on existing management practices, scholars who study beyond compliance business behavior, and members of the public who want to understand better the threats that AI poses and how to reduce them.

Abstract: Introduction -- Impeachment in History and Thought -- Impeachment in Latin America -- Legal Aspects of Impeachment in Comparison -- Conclusions.
Abstract: This book pursues a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to assess presidential impeachments in Latin America. Mixing methodologies from legal studies and political science, it provides a novel and comprehensive assessment of some of the most controversial questions regarding the constitutional function of impeachment and its place in the theory of government. Presidential impeachments have become frequent in Latin America, yet they are still largely misunderstood by legal practitioners and the general public. As such, impeachments frequently provide for heated and polarizing debates. The misunderstandings stem from skewed expectations arising from different theories of government, legal interpretation, and presidential impeachment. The empirical evidence and arguments presented here will help to find common ground on these topics and pacify some latent tensions in society and academia. In addition, the book’s case studies cover cases that have been rarely or incompletely addressed in the literature. Some cover events so recent that they have never been analyzed elsewhere. The book proposes reconsidering certain assumptions made about systems of government, which are based on skewed expectations of impeachments. It also draws on new evidence to re-examine existing impeachment theories and develop new ones. By doing so, it offers valuable insights that may guide lawmakers to redesign their own systems, optimizing them to achieve certain goals. It will also acquaint legal practitioners with the strategies of prosecution, defense, and decision-making in connection with impeachments.

Abstract: This open access book addresses the epistemological and ontological significance as well as the scope of new mechanism. In particular, this book addresses the issues of what is "new" about new mechanism, the epistemological and ontological reasons underlying the adoption of mechanistic instead of other modelling strategies as well as the possibility of mechanistic explanation to accommodate a non-trivial notion of emergence. Arguably, new mechanism has been particularly successful in making sense of scientific practice in the molecular life sciences. But what about other sciences? This book enlarges the context of analysis, addressing the issue of the putative compatibility between the current ways of conceiving new mechanism and actual scientific practices in quantum physics, chemistry, biochemistry, developmental biology and the cognitive sciences.

Abstract: This book offers a novel perspective on consultation with indigenous peoples in projects of natural resource exploitation. Engaging with current debates in international law, the study introduces a multi-dimensional perspective on consultation understood to include self-determination and cultural rights. It analyzes evidence from several countries across the Americas and Africa and presents an original and in-depth case study of Brazil. The book assesses judicial and legislative cases, drawing on relevant literature, international treaties and supplementary information gained from expert interviews. This supports the work’s broader objective to explore legal facts as well as to evaluate the empirical evidence in light of theoretical considerations. It thereby expands the understanding of consultation as a right under national legal systems and considers practical ways on how to enforce domestic redress for avoiding legal indeterminacy. The conclusions of the analysis contribute to not only a better understanding of the subject matter but also showcase ways of how to improve the realities on the ground. The book puts forward a range of recommendations directed at national authorities, international organizations, development lenders and civil society to help improve the unsatisfactory present circumstances. The intended audience encompasses legal scholars, students, practitioners and journalists, as well as anyone interested in research on the realization of indigenous peoples’ rights and the role of international law in the 21st century. .

Abstract: This book focuses on the widespread use of deep neural networks and their various techniques in session-based recommender systems (SBRS). It presents the success of using deep learning techniques in many SBRS applications from different perspectives. For this purpose, the concepts and fundamentals of SBRS are fully elaborated, and different deep learning techniques focusing on the development of SBRS are studied. The book is well-modularized, and each chapter can be read in a stand-alone manner based on individual interests and needs. In the first chapter of the book, definitions and concepts related to SBRS are reviewed, and a taxonomy of different SBRS approaches is presented, where the characteristics and applications of each class are discussed separately. The second chapter starts with the basic concepts of deep learning and the characteristics of each model. Then, each deep learning model, along with its architecture and mathematical foundations, is introduced. Next, chapter 3 analyses different approaches of deep discriminative models in session-based recommender systems. In the fourth chapter, session-based recommender systems that benefit from deep generative neural networks are discussed. Subsequently, chapter 5 discusses session-based recommender systems using advanced/hybrid deep learning models. Eventually, chapter 6 reviews different learning-to-rank methods focusing on information retrieval and recommender system domains. Finally, the results of the investigations and findings from the research review conducted throughout the book are presented in a conclusive summary. This book aims at researchers who intend to use deep learning models to solve the challenges related to SBRS. The target audience includes researchers entering the field, graduate students specializing in recommender systems, web data mining, information retrieval, or machine/deep learning, and advanced industry developers working on recommender systems.

Abstract: This book seeks to explore the potential and actual value of parliamentary debates as a source of legislative justification. Drawing on a sample of recent Spanish legislation, the papers collected here analyse (critically) the rationale of several laws or legislative measures as it can be reconstructed from the respective parliamentary discussions. All issues covered have given rise to intense political, legal and social controversy: they range from the combat against gender violence, the legal status of bullfighting, the protection of crime victims and the so-called ‘push-backs’ at the border, to the regulation of euthanasia, the minimum living income, underage girls’ access to abortion, and joint child custody. The volume is organised into two main parts. The first group of case studies adopt a legisprudential perspective and examine parliamentary deliberations in the light of the theory and methodology of legislative justification; the contributions in the second part follow approaches that fall outside – but are largely compatible with –legisprudence, and deal with aspects such as the rhetorical strategies employed by MPs when debating bills, and the role of elected legislators as constitutional interpreters.

Abstract: Can we regulate something that doesn’t exist yet? Can Europe create its own Silicon Valley? Who gets to create technological value in today’s world? Whatever happened to the once-flourishing idea of rags to riches? Will new and exciting innovations only ever come from big tech companies? Can the EU establish its own flexible framework for boosting innovation, e.g. by facilitating the transformative use of technologies and data? This book seeks to answer these questions by exploring the differences in copyright culture in Europe and the United States, with its flexible fair use framework. The findings are anything but obvious, and decades of case law on both sides of the Atlantic tell a story of judges going to great lengths to deal with new challenges while navigating the imperfections of statutory law – both where it is too broadly formulated and where it is too prescriptive. How can the population’s creative potential best be fostered? What do software innovations have in common with the evolution of living organisms? What are the vulnerabilities of distributed creativity? Answers are sought in the processes that came into being during the early years of the digital revolution and were then forced to take a back seat as control of the means of production was increasingly placed in the hands of tech companies. The findings and insights presented here are highly relevant for today’s digital policymaking. Market concentration processes in innovation haven’t ceased; they are ongoing. And in an age where data-driven services are creating and reinforcing global oligopolies, the question posed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Google v. Oracle is now more relevant than ever: who should hold the keys to digital innovation?

Abstract: This book investigates the integration of Syrian refugees in the United States, and it identifies the challenges that hinder their successful integration. After providing a comprehensive analysis of the U.S. legal instruments in national and international laws and obligations to receive forced migrants, the book then highlights the resettlement process and programs as a coordinated interagency process that entails a collaboration between the UN Refugee Agency and the related U.S. departments and agencies and the nongovernmental partners and refugee advocacy organizations. Moreover, it delves into integration as a proxy theory and governance that entails an analytical component from a theoretical lens to understand some aspects of realities that revolve around the resettlement of forced migrants' concepts, principles, and policies. Built on rich qualitative data from Syrian refugees in the U.S. to understand their resettlement experiences and their integration in multidimensional analysis, the book shows how the lack of federally driven integration policies and institutions in the U.S. negatively affects just integration. Relying on voluntary organizations leads to uneven outcomes among forced migrants, affecting social equity. Alongside this book's theoretical and practical implications, it highlights the ethical consideration of studying forced migrants and the synergy between forced migrants' vulnerability and cultural sensitivity. Ultimately, the book discusses the roadmap for implementing integration policies in the U.S. Among the topics covered: Introduction: The History of Managing Forced Migration in the U.S.: Political Climate and Global Events The U.S. Legal and Institutional Frameworks of the Resettlement of Syrian Refugees〈 The Syrian Refugees' Integration Challenges in the U.S. and the Roadmap for Integration Policies Navigating Integration Policies of Forced Migration in the United States: The Case of Syrian Refugees is relevant reading for researchers who are interested in integration and refugee-related topics; academics who conduct research in social policies, refugee integration, and resettlement; public policymakers who are involved in formulating refugee integration policies; practitioners at various levels who assist resettled forced migrants; and graduate students studying political science, public administration, social work, and sociology. Politicians with left-wing views who are advocating for improved human security for everyone also would find the book a useful resource.

Abstract: This interdisciplinary anthology offers both theoretical reflections and empirical data on past, present and possible future war and crisis situations. In addition, against the background of the authors' academic and practical experience in the field of international political observation and consultancy, proposals are formulated for peacekeeping in crisis regions and with regard to extreme environments. Furthermore it addresses sensory and aesthetic perceptions of war and peace. Unlike other books on the subject, this contributed volume seeks solutions for lasting peace from various fields that could help improve quality of life for people around the world – especially in heterogeneous societies, which are often shaken by religious, ethnic or political crises.

Abstract: This book gives an account of the origins of theoretical mechanics in antiquity, its limited reception in the Arabic and Latin Middle Ages, and its recovery and subsequent development in Italy to the time of Galileo. From late antiquity to the fifteenth century, the ancient science of mechanics—the theory of machines—was almost completely unknown in the Latin west. Then, from the mid-fifteenth century on, Italian humanists began to recover the ancient texts, and from them through the sixteenth century Italian mathematicians restored the ancient science of mechanics. The Renaissance of Mechanics first examines the principal ancient works on mechanics—the Aristotelian Mechanical Problems, the mechanical geometry of Archimedes, and Hero’s Mechanics—and then describes their limited reception in the Arabic world and their even more limited transmission to the medieval Latin west. It then traces their recovery in the fifthteenth century and their assimilation in the sixteenth by Niccolò Tartaglia, Francesco Maurolico, and Guidobaldo dal Monte, culminating in Galileo’s rediscovery of Hero’s lost mechanical principles. The book ends with an examination of Galileo’s mechanics and its relation to his new science of motion, and suggests how modern mechanics would emerge from these ancient roots. Detailed analyses of these works offer new insights and interpretations while remaining accessible to general historians. The Renaissance of Mechanics will be of especial interest to those working in the fields of renaissance humanism and the history of ancient, medieval, and renaissance science and mathematics.

Abstract: This book examines the international forums in which states develop cyber norms—“rules of the road” for how governments use information and communication technologies. To understand the dynamics in this emerging field of diplomacy, the book focuses on an often-overlooked actor: Brazil. With the international debate dominated by two camps that can be broadly characterized as the West versus China and Russia, the book demonstrates that Brazil holds a key position as a bridge-builder between these two sides. It paints a rich picture of Brazil’s efforts in shaping cyber norms across such diverse forums as the United Nations, BRICS, and the Organization of American States, while contextualizing these activities in Brazilian domestic cybersecurity policy and foreign policy traditions. This rich case study paves the way for a deeper understanding of how different actors shape international cybersecurity policy.

Abstract: This book presents the concept of Spiritual Jewish criminology. It stems from the Jewish spiritual paradigm, and explains criminology from this point of view in theoretical and applied perspectives. This volume uses qualitative methodology and a phenomenological, hermeneutic approach that enables a combination of interviews and analysis of scriptural texts. Spiritual criminology topics covered from the Spiritual Jewish perspective include: References to life purpose. Human nature and tendencies. Freedom of choice. Corresponding perception of punishment and rehabilitation. This volume suggests theoretical and practical implications to the field of criminology, and although based on Jewish premises, presents in a way that can benefit different belief systems. It is ideal for professionals interested in the intersection of spirituality and criminology.

Abstract: Contemporary Overview of Appropriate Dispute Resolution (ADR) -- Types of Dispute Resolution – and its Effectiveness -- Legal Transplant -- Clinical Education / Mass Advocacy of ADR via Podcast- Findings -- Analysis of Clinical Education via Podcasting Qualitative and Quantitative -- Conclusion and Recommendation.
Abstract: This book explores the various types of Appropriate Dispute Resolution (ADR) applied in Nigeria, the UK, and the US. It critically examines the effectiveness of mediation, arbitration, restorative justice, collaborative law, and online dispute resolution (ODR) in settling disputes or conflicts, while also demonstrating the benefits of ADR and multi-door courthouses (MDCs). The book provides a concise introduction to the resolution of disputes or conflicts in Africa prior to the advent of colonial rule. It suggests that a ‘legal transplant’ can also take place from a less complex society to a more complex one, contrary to the general belief that legal transplants usually proceed from a more complex society to a less complex one. The book aims to help people understand ADR mechanisms and the advantages of settling disputes using means other than litigation. It presents Traditional African Methods of Settling Disputes (TAMSD), Early Dispute Resolution (EDR), arbitration, negotiation, ODR, collaborative law, restorative justice, conciliation, ombuds, and early neutral evaluation as viable alternatives. It also highlights the need for clinical legal education and effective messaging that highlights the benefits of ADR compared to traditional litigation. In turn, it analyses the use of ADR, especially mediation and collaborative law, to settle disputes in criminal law, restorative justice, employment law, and business and human rights due diligence/violation cases. Further, the book demonstrates that criminal matters are now under the scope of ADR via Restorative Justice Door. The book discusses the skills, techniques, and relevant statutory frameworks for each field of Appropriate Dispute Resolution and provides national and international examples of the application of the relevant principles. Addressing the fields of Appropriate Dispute Resolution (ADR), criminal law, civil law, business management, psychology, employment law, human resource management, and African studies, it will appeal to a wide readership.

Abstract: This book presents a comprehensive and actionable framework for individuals and leaders seeking to promote human dignity within healthy environments. Rooted in the policy sciences approach, it equips readers with the essential concepts, tools, and skills necessary to address indignity and unhealthy conditions collectively. Despite international commitments and domestic laws advocating for human dignity, a glaring "human dignity gap" persists in numerous regions and problem contexts. This book sheds light on this disparity, examining its manifestations in global environmental change, development efforts, water insecurity, wildfires, human-wildlife conflict, access to public health, and much more. While existing scholarship often focuses on legal rights, the authors emphasize untapped opportunities for everyday citizens and leaders to foster human dignity within their communities and beyond. By offering fresh perspectives, practical concepts, and exercises, this book empowers readers to bridge the performance gap, ultimately enabling the realization of human dignity from the grassroots level. It provides innovative strategies and frameworks to address this pressing global issue, making it an invaluable resource for scholars, policymakers, and concerned citizens alike.

Abstract: This volume explores violence in bioarchaeological case studies from various cultures, geographic regions, and time periods throughout the Eastern Hemisphere through the lens of Neil Whitehead's concept of poetics. It emphasizes the role and power of performance and ritual in violent acts, and how different types of violence are used within societies. Whitehead’s poetics of violence model has primarily been applied to Western Hemisphere assemblages and indigenous groups, and this is the first volume dedicated to the application of this theoretical model to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Developed from a symposium organized at the American Association of Physical Anthropologists annual meeting in 2018, this volume keeps a tight focus on the direct link between physical evidence for violence in human remains and the contextualized interpretations of how that violence may have functioned within an individual’s society. This type of theoretical interpretation, which treats violence as a meaningful act firmly embedded within its cultural context, rather than as an aberration, is rarely applied to archaeological assemblages and human remains from the Eastern Hemisphere. This is the first volume to offer direct physical evidence for how violence was enacted and understood within different societies in the past. This volume aims to make these rigorous theoretical studies available to students and professionals in archaeology, anthropology, and bioarchaeology, and to provide a model for other researchers to interpret evidence of violence in human remains from archaeological contexts.

The control of administrative activity. 8. Conclusions.
Abstract: The book provides a discursive reflection on the current challenges facing administrative law, based on a key idea: the defence of the liberal model of society. The author describes the content of her book as a turning point on the traditional standards of the rule of law and the way it impacts on the administrative state and administrative law. Considering the current use (and abuse) of emergency law by governments – based on economic crisis, environmental crisis, pandemic, and the economic situation caused by the Ukraine war – she devises a different balance or equilibrium on the usual separation of powers. Many reasons contribute to this turning point: i) the weaknesses of an open society easily swayed by social networks; ii) social “tribalism” replaces common good and general interest; iii) social tribalism leads to illiberal society, which causes illiberal democracies; iv) illiberal democracies lead to ungovernability which reinforces the role of the government, the emergency law, and some de facto measures. The author looks at many recent decisions from the ECJ and the ECHR and some constitutional and administrative courts, which extends the interest of this work to a wide range of professionals, from scholars to students, from judges to lawyers, filling the gap from an administrative law perspective of the current issues.

Abstract: In Pascal's God and the Fragments of the World, Martin Nemoianu offers a new interpretation of the thought of Blaise Pascal, drawn from the Pensées and beyond. The book takes Pascal's central theme to be the distinction - Infini rien - between the transcendent God and the created world, which, without God, would be nothing. Nemoianu identifies the distinction in Pascal, articulates it, and works through the difficulties attending the distinction's disclosure. He then considers the implications of the distinction for the nature of nature and the nature of the human being, culminating in the ideal of martyrdom. The book closes with treatment of a closely related theme: the relation between human freedom and divine grace, in the context of the vexed question of Pascal's Jansenism. Martin Nemoianu is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University, USA.

Abstract: This collection responds to widespread, complex, and current environmental challenges by presenting eleven original essays on a new elemental-embodied approach in environmental humanities. This approach has a special focus on elemental and indigenous philosophies as well as localized experiences of terrestrial forces: from earthquakes and eruptions to pandemics and natural disasters. Representing a shift in modern Western scientific and disembodied thinking of nature, this edited book approaches the question of relationality and intertwining of human and natural being by utilizing the elemental-embodied methodologies within philosophy of embodiment and nature. Supported by research in cognitive sciences, the contributors represent the experiential and affective turn within research into human cognition. As embodied, the human being is embedded and interacting with all there is. The aim of this edited volume is to indicate new paths toward regaining our access to natural being within us and thus toward reconnecting with the natural environment and the things and beings around us in a new, environmentally enhanced way. It appeals to researchers and students working in many fields, predominantly in philosophy, as well as religious and environmental studies.

Abstract: This book takes a novel approach by highlighting comparative and long-term historical perspectives on experimental practice. The juxtaposition of accounts of natural, social, and medical experimentation is very enlightening, especially because the authors put the emphasis on the different kinds of objects of experimentation (physical matter, chemical reagents, social groups, organizations, sick individuals, archeological remains) and demonstrate how much the kinds of objects matter for the practice of experimentation, its methods, tools, and methodologies. Taken together, the chapters raise several fascinating questions for further study: What do these different approaches have in common? Why do we call them “experimentation”? What are the intersections among the fields and their developments? The volume engages philosophical approaches that are not well known to Anglophone readers (Bachelard, Bergson, Bernard, Canguilhem, among others) and brings to attention a wealth of Francophone secondary literature on past and present scientific experimentation. The collection fills a yawning gap in science, science studies, and philosophy of science teaching, making it particularly valuable philosophers and historians of science in all subfields.

Conkey) -- Index.
Abstract: This open access volume explores the impact of globalization on the contemporary study of deep-time art. The volume explores how early rock art research’s Eurocentric biases have shifted with broadened global horizons to facilitate new conversations and discourses in new post-colonial realities. The book uses seven main themes to explore theoretical, methodological, ethical, and practical developments that are orienting the study of Pleistocene and Holocene arts in the age of globalization. Compiling studies as diverse as genetics, visualization, with the proliferation of increasingly sophisticated archaeological techniques, means that vast quantities of materials and techniques are now incorporated into the analysis of the world’s visual cultures. Deep-Time Images in the Age of Globalization aims to promote critical reflection on the multitude of positive – and negative – impacts that globalization has wrought in rock art research. The volume brings new theoretical frameworks as well as engagement with indigenous knowledge and perspectives from art history. It highlights technical, methodological and interpretive developments, and showcases rock art characteristics from previously unknown (in the global north) geographic areas. This book provides comparative approaches on rock art globally and scrutinises the impacts of globalization on research, preservation, and management of deep-time art. This book will appeal to archaeologists, social scientists and art historians working in the field as well as lovers of rock art. .

The Future of the Internet.
Abstract: The internet has become a battleground for global power struggles, with nations and even terrorist organizations wielding cyber-attacks to exert control. As the absence of binding international laws and norms leaves cyberspace largely unchecked, countries are seeking to establish their Sovereign Cyber Domains (SCD) - tightly controlled cyberspaces. In this illuminating monograph, the author explores how Russia, China, Iran, and others perceive the internet as a means for the United States and its allies to maintain global dominance and influence foreign audiences, driving their pursuit of strict regulations over domestic cyber affairs and mass communication. Yet, even the United States is now susceptible to foreign cyber operations, mainly foreign influence that undermines its domestic affairs. Even International Blocs like the European Union had expressed concerns about foreign influence and privacy rights abuses, leading to regulatory initiatives like the General Data Protection Regulation, Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act. As nations prioritize cybersecurity and sovereignty over free speech and convenience, the book predicts a future of increased regulation across all layers of the cyber domain, mirroring the historical emergence of the concept of sovereignty. Drawing on a combination of political science, international relations, and cyber domain practices, this monograph offers valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and students. By analyzing existing cyber sovereignty processes and predicting future trends, the book contributes to international relations theories, sheds light on the challenges of an unregulated cyber domain, and provides guidance for a secure and controlled digital future.

Abstract: This book explores and sheds light on the contemporary discourse between science and religion. Employing the methodological approach of modern science, Overcoming Reductionism aims to explain natural phenomena not in isolation from philosophical or theological interpretations. The book then focuses on the concept of pain. Although pain is a phenomenon familiar to all humans, defining it exclusively in terms of nociception proves challenging. This book therefore delves into the intricate nature of the phenomenon, critically acknowledging the way pain profoundly influences the construction of one's existential meaning, particularly concerning matters of faith. The age-old quandaries of pain, suffering, and evil have troubled humans for countless generations. Perhaps never before have scientific inquiry and theological reflection experienced such a deep connection as in these times. Horvat and Roszak demonstrate the benefits of adopting a holistic approach while acknowledging the limitations of reductionist views. The reader will find here a meaningful quest for answers to profound existential questions while exploring uncharted territory. - -Professor John Anthony Berry (University of Malta) I highly recommend reading the book. Written in a clear, compact, rigorous and consistent manner, it develops one of the most intriguing and decisive problems of human existence: pain and suffering. An inexhaustible issue that needs to be permanently updated and re-signified at the pace of scientific advances and cultural changes, something that the authors Horvat & Roszak carry out in this book in a masterful way. -Professor Leandro Gaitán (University of Navarra).
