Kurzfassung: "First comprehensive analysis of the Parsi community and its demographic decline. 'Where have our people gone?' is a common refrain heard from Parsis. More than a decade ago UNESCO alerted the community of possible extinction. The situation unfortunately has not improved; it continues along the same path. Based on primary data, this four-volume series critically analyses the situation of the ethno-religious Parsi minority of India against the backdrop of its demographic decline. With original scholarly writings and empirical research from multiple sites using mixed method research approach, the series addresses key concerns impacting Parsi demography. Extensive in scope and investigative in analysis, this is the only major socio-psycho-anthropological work in over a decade on the dwindling Parsi community"--Provided by publisher

Kurzfassung: "Items with ordered response categories are common in survey research, such as when respondents are asked how much they agree with certain statements (1=strongly agree to 5=strongly disagree). But how large are the differences between categories of response, and how well do they distinguish between respondents? This volume is the first to introduce the evaluation of rating scales to an audience of survey researchers. Evaluating Rating Scale Functioning for Survey Research provides researchers with an overview of rating scale analysis along with practical guidance on how to conduct such analyses with their own survey data. Author Stefanie A. Wind presents three categories of methods: Rasch models; non-Rasch Item Response Theory (IRT) models; and non-parametric models, together with practical examples. Tutorials, datasets, and software code (R and Facets) to accompany the book are available on the book's website"--

Kurzfassung: "Researchers in the social sciences and beyond are dealing more and more with massive quantities of text data requiring analysis, from historical letters to the constant stream of content in social media. Traditional texts on statistical analysis have focused on numbers, but this book will provide a practical introduction to the quantitative analysis of textual data. Using up-to-date R methods, this book will take readers through the text analysis process, from text mining and pre-processing the text to final analysis. It includes two major case studies using historical and more contemporary text data to demonstrate the practical applications of these methods. Currently, there is no introductory how-to book on textual data analysis with R that is up-to-date and applicable across the social sciences. Code and a variety of additional resources are available on an accompanying website for the book"--

The volume concludes showing the application of mathematical concepts and operations to the familiar case, linear least-squares regression. The Second Edition gives much more attention to visualization. It also covers some new topics, such as an introduction to Markov-Chain Monte Carlo methods. Also included is a companion website with materials that will enable readers to use the R statistical computing environment to reproduce and expand on computations presented in the volume. The book will make an excellent text to accompany a math camp or a course designed to provide foundational mathematics needed to understand advanced statistics. It will also serve as a valuable reference for those who have completed their formal training but are still interested in learning new statistical methods"--

Kurzfassung: "Using Time Series to Analyze Long Range Fractal Patterns presents methods for describing and analyzing dependency and irregularity in long time series. Irregularity refers to cycles that are similar in appearance, but unlike seasonal patterns more familiar to social scientists, repeated over a time scale that is not fixed. Until now, the application of these methods has mainly involved analysis of dynamical systems outside of the social sciences, but this volume makes it possible for social scientists to explore and document fractal patterns in dynamical social systems. Author Matthijs Koopmans concentrates on two general approaches to irregularity in long time series: autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average models, and power spectral density analysis. He demonstrates the methods through two kinds of examples: simulations that illustrate the patterns that might be encountered and serve as a benchmark for interpreting patterns in real data; and secondly social science examples such a long range data on daily monthly unemployment rates, daily school attendance rates; daily numbers of births to teens, and weekly survey data on political orientation. Data and R-scripts to replicate the analyses are available in an accompanying website"--

Rasch measurement theory represents a paradigm shift in measurement theory away from classical test theory and creates a framework for scaling that can yield invariant measurement. Rasch Models for Solving Measurement Problems: Invariant Measurement in the Social Sciences is a broadly accessible text. Authors George Engelhard Jr and Jue Wang introduce the Rasch measurement theory step by step, with chapters on scale construction, evaluation, maintenance, and use. Points are illustrated and techniques demonstrated through an extended example: The Food Insecurity Experience (FIE) Scale. The Rasch analyses in the book are run using the Facets computer program. A correlation matrix is more than a matrix filled with correlation coefficients. The value of one coefficient in the matrix puts constraints on the values of the others, and this is a major theme of the volume. The volume is written accessibly, and key points are illustrated with a wide range of lively examples, including correlations between intelligence measured at different ages through adolescence; correlations between public health expenditures, health life expectancy, adult mortality, and other country characteristics; correlations between wellbeing and state-level vital statistics; correlations between the racial composition of cities and professional sports teams; and correlations between childbearing intentions and childbearing outcomes over the reproductive life course"--

Kurzfassung: "Statistical methods for spatial data have advanced significantly during the last few decades. Traditional methods such as difference of means tests and regression require different approaches when used with geographic data - this is because dependence among observations that are close in space reduces the effective size of the sample. These advances have been put into practice and have been made accessible through a variety of software platforms. There are also a number of advanced texts that cover many of the methods in detail. There is, however, a gap between the coverage of software, applications, and interpretation on the one hand, and the advanced methodological treatments on the other. What is needed is a text, aimed primarily at students, that has the objective of introducing spatial statistical methods in a gentle manner. This text builds upon an introductory course in statistics, and contains expository examples and elementary exercises. It should therefore provide a solid footing for the interested reader to then both apply and interpret the methods, and read and understand the more advanced texts. The general idea is to have a two-volume set, with Statistical Methods for Geography (5th edition) serving as the first volume. In the revision of SMfG, the material on spatial regression and spatial patterns that appears at the end of the book has been cut, leaving it as a more traditional introductory statistics text. The importance of spatial methods will be indicated there, but the details and primary material have been moved to Spatial Statistical Methods for Geography. This is the first text to provide students (rather than researchers) with a basic introduction, and it's written by an author who is practised in writing accessible/pedagogically focussed texts in stats for SAGE"--

Kurzfassung: "Since the 1st edition of this monograph was published in 2004, there have been numerous developments in the statistical and computational methods used in multilevel and longitudinal modeling. Mixed-effects modeling has been solidified as a primary means for accurately and efficiently estimating a wide-variety of multilevel and longitudinal models. More complex models that include cross-level interactions, cross-classified random effects, alternative covariances structures, and the like appear much more frequently in the health and social sciences research literature. Sophisticated mixedeffects modeling procedures are now incorporated in most comprehensive statistical software packages (including R, Stata, and SAS), and thus there is less need for specialized multilevel software"--

Kurzfassung: "Agent-based simulation has become increasingly popular as a modeling approach in the social sciences because it enables researchers to build models where individual entities and their interactions are directly represented. The Second Edition of Nigel Gilbert's Agent-Based Models introduces this technique; considers a range of methodological and theoretical issues; shows how to design an agent-based model, with a simple example; offers some practical advice about developing, verifying and validating agent-based models; and finally discusses how to plan an agent-based modelling project, publish the results and apply agent-based modeling to formulate and evaluate social and economic policies. A website to accompany the book includes a simulation using NetLogo"--

Kurzfassung: "Regression diagnostics are methods for determining whether a regression model that has been fit to data adequately represents the structure of the data. For example, if the model assumes a linear (straight-line) relationship between the response and an explanatory variable, is the assumption of linearity warranted? Regression diagnostics not only reveal deficiencies in a regression model that has been fit to data but in many instances may suggest how the model can be improved. The Second Edition of this bestselling volume by John Fox considers two important classes of regression models: the normal linear regression model (LM), in which the response variable is quantitative and assumed to have a normal distribution conditional on the values of the explanatory variables; and generalized linear models (GLMs) in which the conditional distribution of the response variable is a member of an exponential family. R code for examples within the text can be found on an accompanying website"--

Kurzfassung: Models for singly-bounded variables -- Models for doubly-bounded variables -- Quantile models for bounded variables -- Censored and truncated variables -- Extensions and conclusions.
Kurzfassung: "This book introduces researchers and students to the concepts and generalized linear models for analyzing quantitative random variables that have one or more bounds. Examples of bounded variables include the percentage of a population eligible to vote (bounded from 0 to 100), or reaction time in milliseconds (bounded below by 0). The human sciences deal in many variables that are bounded. Ignoring bounds can result in misestimation and improper statistical inference. Michael Smithson and Yiyun Shou's book brings together material on the analysis of limited and bounded variables that is scattered across the literature in several disciplines, and presents it in a style that is both more accessible and up-to-date. The authors provide worked examples in each chapter using real datasets from a variety of disciplines. The software used for the examples include R, SAS, and Stata. The data, software code, and detailed explanations of the example models are available on an accompanying website at www.sagepub.com/smithsonshou"--
