    Abstract: In the eighteenth century, the printing press enabled the rise of an independent press--the Fourth Estate--that helped check the power of governments, business, and industry. In similar ways, the internet is enabling the empowerment of a more independent collectivity of networked individuals--the Fifth Estate. Dutton uses estate theory to illuminate the most important power shift of the digital age. He argues that this network power shift is not only enabling greater democratic accountability in politics and governance but is also empowering networked individuals in their everyday life and work.

Performing Media Activism in the Digital Age breaks new ground by conceptualizing activism as a performance extending beyond public space and the moment of public gatherings to consider the more extended view of social or political movements as mediated social connections. The book utilizes primary data extracted from social media platforms by applying a social network analysis (SNA) approach to the people, organizations, and media that are trying to advance their particular agendas, with an eye toward a better understanding of the ways in which social movements operate in a networked society. The goal of social network analysis is to identify social structures within a movement such as communities or clusters and it seeks to locate influence within those structures. Social network analysis as applied to media activism represents an interdisciplinary field that encompasses social psychology, sociology, as well as graph theory, which should suggest this book will be of interest to scholars and students in these and related fields. In the digital age, social network analysis represents a paradigm shift as analytical and data visualization tools can be applied in an interdisciplinary manner. By combining data science and sociology or cultural anthropology, one has the means to visualize networks of individuals and organizations engaged in a social movement, to see how movements are organized (structured) into communities, clusters, and niches, and to visualize power structures within social movements to see who is influencing a network over extended periods of time. Neil M. Alperstein is Professor Emeritus in the Communication Department at Loyola University Maryland, USA. He is the founding director of the Emerging Media graduate program. He is the author of Celebrity and Mediated Social Connections (2019), Advertising in Everyday Life (2003), co-author of two books on online education, in addition to contributing book chapters and publishing numerous research articles.

    Abstract: "Women Who Kill explores several lines of inquiry: the female murderer as a figure that destabilizes order; the tension between criminal and victim; the relationship between crime and expression (or the lack thereof); and the paradox whereby a crime can be both an act of destruction and a creative assertion of agency. In doing so, the contributors assess the influence of feminist, queer and gender studies on mainstream television and cinema, notably in the genres (film noir, horror, melodrama) that have received the most critical attention from this perspective. They also analyse the politics of representation by considering these works of fiction in their contexts and addressing some of the ambiguities raised by postfeminism. The book is structured in three parts: Neo-femmes Fatales; Action Babes and Monstrous Women. Films examined include White Men Are Cracking Up (1994); Hit & Miss (2012) ; Gone Girl (2014); Terminator (1984) ; The Walking Dead (2010Ư); Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) ; Contagion (2011) and Ex Machina (2015) among others."

    Abstract: In Photographic Returns Shawn Michelle Smith traces how historical moments of racial crisis come to be known photographically and how the past continues to inhabit, punctuate, and transform the present through the photographic medium in contemporary art. Smith engages photographs by Rashid Johnson, Sally Mann, Deborah Luster, Lorna Simpson, Jason Lazarus, Carrie Mae Weems, Taryn Simon, and Dawoud Bey, among others. Each of these artists turns to the past—whether by using nineteenth-century techniques to produce images or by re-creating iconic historic photographs—as a way to use history to negotiate the present and to call attention to the unfinished political project of racial justice in the United States. By interrogating their use of photography to recall, revise, and amplify the relationship between racial politics of the past and present, Smith locates a temporal recursivity that is intrinsic to photography, in which images return to haunt the viewer and prompt reflection on the present and an imagination of a more just future.

    Abstract: The Anthropocene is a concept which challenges the foundations of humanities scholarship as it is traditionally understood. It calls not only for closer engagement with the natural sciences but also for a synthetic approach bringing together insights from the various subdisciplines in the humanities and social sciences which have addressed themselves to ecological questions in the past. This book is an introduction to, and structured survey of, the attempts that have been made to take the measure of the Anthropocene, and explores some of the paradigmatic problems which it raises. The difficulties of an introduction to the Anthropocene lie not only in the disciplinary breadth of the subject, but also in the rapid pace at which the surrounding debates have been, and still are, unfolding. This introduction proposes a conceptual map which, however provisionally, charts these ongoing discussions across a variety of scientific and humanistic disciplines. This book will be essential reading for students and researchers in the environmental humanities, particularly in literary and cultural studies, history, philosophy, and environmental studies

    Abstract: This book uses the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), as an analytical entry point to understand and illuminate post-War Europe and the drive to create an identity that can legitimise the European project in its broadest sense. The ESC presents an idealised vision of Europe, and this has long existed in a strained relationship with reality. While the trajectory of post-war European integration is a high-profile topic, we believe that the ESC offers a unique and innovative way to think about the role of culture in the history of post-War European integration and tensions between the ideal and reality of European unity. Through the series of case studies that make up the chapters in this book, analysis brings these interlinked tensions to light, exploring the roles of culture and identity, alongside and a productive conversation with the political and economic projects of post-war European integration. Julie Kalman is Associate Professor of History at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. She has published widely on the history of French-speaking Europe. Ben Wellings is a Senior Lecture in Politics and International Relations at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He is the author of English Nationalism, Brexit and the Anglosphere: wider still and wider (2019) and English Nationalism and Eurosceptcism: losing the peace (2012). Keshia Jacotine works in research development at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. She holds a MPhil in Political Science, and has written about British and European politics for theConversation and Australian Broadcasting Corporation

    Abstract: Fur Hochschulen in Deutschland ist Internationalitat ein Aushangeschild, dahinter jedoch spielen machtvolle Unterscheidungen eine Rolle. An diesem Spannungsverhaltnis zwischen Offenheit und Ausgrenzung setzt die Autorin an. In die Diskussion eingebracht werden hier als Portrats illustrierte Wahrnehmungen von BildungsMigrantInnen aus Marokko. Uber zwei Jahre wurden dort Studieninteressierte begleitet und Interviews mit dann tatsachlich nach Deutschland Migrierten gefuhrt. Inwieweit stellt sich aus deren Perspektive Migration fur Bildung als ein gelingendes bzw. gelungenes Vorhaben dar? Welche Anregungen lassen sich daraus fur die Gestaltung transnationalen Studierens ableiten? Zu Migration, Kolonialismus und Bildung greift die Studie auch Positionen marokkanischer bzw. afrikanischer AutorInnen und Diskurse aus Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften auf und schließt mit konkreten Ansatzpunkten fur die Umsetzung einer subjektorientierten Internationalitat an Hochschulen in Deutschland.

    Abstract: ?Werbekommunikation geht weit uber die Verbreitung massenmedialer, bezahlter Werbeanzeigen in der Wirtschaft hinaus. Der soziale Mechanismus, der ihr zugrunde liegt, lasst sich potenziell in allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft entdecken und tritt in den unterschiedlichsten Formen auf.?Nils S. Borchers diskutiert diese Vielfaltigkeit der Werbekommunikation und untersucht insbesondere die Funktion, die der Werbung als Kommunikationsform zukommt. In interdisziplinarer Auseinandersetzung mit bestehenden Werbekonzepten entwirft er eine Theorie appellierender Kommunikation, die Werbung von anderen Formen des Appells wie Empfehlung und Befehl unterscheidet. Der aus dieser Theorie abgeleitete Werbebegriff uberwindet die vorherrschenden ontologischen Vorstellungen des Werbediskurses und erlaubt den Anschluss der Werbeforschung an aktuelle Kommunikationstheorien ? mit uberraschenden Konsequenzen fur einen spezifisch kommunikationswissenschaftlichen Werbebegriff.?.

    Abstract: ?Die Debatte uber die Sanierung, Rekultivierung und Gestaltung von Tagebaubrachen in Ostdeutschland nach 1989/90 ist Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung. Markus Schwarzer analysiert die Ideen, Werte und Symboliken von Landschaft, die die asthetische Wahrnehmung, wissenschaftliche Erforschung und planerische Umgestaltung der Brachen auszeichnen. Fur seine Untersuchung hat er leitende Konzepte aus dem Sudraum Leipzig, der Region Dessau-Bitterfeld-Wittenberg und der Lausitz ausgewahlt.     Abstract: Marion Magg-Schwarzbacker analysiert, welche gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen die Aktualitat und Verbreitung von Mentoring-Programmen fur Frauen in Deutschland, insbesondere an Hochschulen, hat und bezieht sich bei der empirischen Analyse auf (vorwiegend schriftliche) Dokumente eines konkreten Mentoring-Projektes. Die durch das Konzept der wissenssoziologischen Diskursanalyse inspirierte Analyse und Interpretation des Datenmaterials zeigt, dass unter den gegebenen gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen die Hochschulausbildung in der Wahrnehmung von Mentees, Mentorinnen und Mentoren nicht ausreicht. Die Autorin arbeitet heraus, dass Mentoring als antizipatorische, intergenerationelle, erfahrungsgeleitete, informelle Kooperation und Lernform eine zeitgemaße Bereicherung der Bildungslandschaft darstellt.
