    Abstract: Robotic research and developments in computing technologies including artificial intelligence have led to significant improvements in autonomous capabilities of robots. Yet, human supervision is advisable and, in many cases, necessary when robots interact with real-world, outside-lab environments. This is due to the fact that complete autonomy in robots has not yet been achieved. When robots encounter challenges beyond their capabilities, a viable solution is to include human operators in the loop, who can support robots through teleoperation, taking complete control or shared control. This monograph focuses on a special form of shared control, namely mixed-initiative, where the final command to the robot is a weighted sum of the commands from the operator and the autonomous controller. The weights (fixed or adaptive), called authority allocation (AA) factors, decide who has more control authority over the robot. Several research groups use different methods to adapt the AA factors online and the benefits of adaptive mixed-initiative shared control have been well established in terms of task completion success and operator usability. However, stability of the overall shared control framework, with communication time-delays between the operator and the robot, is a field that has not been examined extensively. This monograph presents methods to improve performance and stability in shared control so that the possibilities of its applications can be widened. Firstly, methods to improve the haptic feedback performance of teleoperation are developed. Secondly, methods to stabilize adaptive shared control systems, while still ensuring high teleoperation performance, are proposed. The methods are validated on multiple robotic systems and they were applied in several projects, both in space and terrestrial domains. With the aforementioned contributions, this monograph provides an overarching framework to improve synergy between humans and robots. The flexibility of the framework allows integration of existent teleoperation and shared control approaches, which further promotes synergy within the robotics community.

    Abstract: By 2027, it had been seven years since the scientists’ sea-changing research on artificial psychology and robotics. The work debuted around the same time as Large Language Model Chatbots, and the power of the integration of the two technologies put many industries in a tailspin. The commercial and defense industries especially were still scrambling to regulate their use in research and universities. The sought-after scientists signed with DARPA to build reliable and secure AI entities, but the agency grew fearful of the technology’s power and ultimately decided it was too dangerous to bring to market and demanded the scientists destroy the work. The researchers couldn’t bring themselves to discard 20 years of research, so instead sent the entities to various research labs around the world. But unbeknownst to them, each AI-entity embraced its new home, growing, adapting, evolving, and ultimately connecting beyond what the researchers could envision. In the end, as the scientists catch up to each one, they realize the entities have discovered a very human means of interacting: the power of physical contact; and not physical contact between humans and technology, but physical contact between robotic entities. And with this discovery, the entities join forces to only grow stronger. This development ushers in a new paradigm where the difference between AI-entities and human entities becomes less and less discernible. All the AI and robotic science featured in the book is real; the story line is fictional, but with how fast innovation moves, it’s not hard to envision.

    Abstract: It is a book made up of questions, some without certain answers, that attempts to open the reader's mind to new and, perhaps, futuristic scenarios. There are two diametrically opposed approaches to artificial intelligence today. On the one hand, there are the techno-pessimists who see only dystopian scenarios and experience technological progress with apprehension, emphasising the dangers, and on the other hand, there are the techno-optimists who, on the other hand, tend to overestimate the positive effects, going so far as to attribute almost thaumaturgic virtues to technological progress. Our approach is meant to be secular and scientific; the risks must not be concealed, nor must they be overestimated, just as the positive aspects must not be emphasised. And, in any case, as in any social phenomenon, the governance of processes and the definition of a system of rules and policies are the aspects that can create advantages or disadvantages and, above all, can determine who are the beneficiaries of the advantages and who have to bear the disadvantages. Like any new technology, this too can be dehumanising, but technology is a tool that depends on how it is used and by whom it is used. that of ethics is, therefore, a fundamental aspect. Therefore, one should neither be a techno-optimist nor a techno-pessimist, but should be aware that governing the economic and social structural changes that the advent of artificial intelligence will cause will be crucial to ensure prosperity for future generations and to avoid negative and even apocalyptic scenarios. So no futurist dystopias! Humanity has so far always been able to govern technological progress, it certainly has the potential to govern what some have called 'the Final Invention', but it will only succeed if it is able to understand the peculiarities of this new process of technological development and give it ethical content.The book provides a thoughtful review of the relationship between artificial intelligence and ethics, approaching the issue from different perspectives: philosophical, technological, economic and legal. This will be one of the most important issues that Humanity will have to face and resolve.

    Abstract: This book presents a new framework to improve the integration of exoskeletons in hemiparetic patients. The idea is to reduce potentially damaging compensatory strategies in the non-paretic leg, by ensuring a proper technology embodiment of the robotic exoskeletons in the nervous system. Upon reviewing control strategies for partial robotic exoskeletons applied to human gait, the book introduces robotic exoskeletons control algorithms, which were developed with the intention to promote gait symmetry by assisting the affected limb of hemiparetic patients according to the movement of the non-paretic leg. This new paradigm aimed at promoting the device's embodiment was expected to counteract the compensation mechanisms, which would become unnecessary and thus disappear. The control strategy relies on the gait phase estimation of the sound leg calculated using an adaptive frequency oscillator and was evaluated on post-stroke patients affected by hemiparetic gait, and the results are described in this book. All in all, this book offers a timely snapshot on control strategies for post-stroke robotic gait assistance. It also presents new findings concerning the role of robotic controllers in the embodiment of such devices, and their implications for new assistance paradigms for people with neurological gait disorders.

    Abstract: Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) has been a long-standing research problem in robotics. It describes the problem of a robot mapping an unknown environment, while simultaneously localizing in it with the help of the incomplete map. This book describes a technique called Switchable Constraints. Switchable Constraints help to increase the robustness of SLAM against data association errors and in particular against false positive loop closure detections. Such false positive loop closure detections can occur when the robot erroneously assumes it re-observed a landmark it has already mapped or when the appearance of the observed surroundings is very similar to the appearance of other places in the map. Ambiguous observations and appearances are very common in human-made environments such as office floors or suburban streets, making robustness against spurious observations a key challenge in SLAM. The book summarizes the foundations of factor graph-based SLAM techniques. It explains the problem of data association errors before introducing the novel idea of Switchable Constraints. We present a mathematical derivation and probabilistic interpretation of Switchable Constraints along with evaluations on different datasets. The book shows that Switchable Constraints are applicable beyond SLAM problems and demonstrates the efficacy of this technique to improve the quality of satellite-based localization in urban environments, where multipath and non-line-of-sight situations are common error sources.

    Abstract: This is the first part of a two-volume set on Concordian economics, a new paradigm whose core completes the Aristotelian-Aquinian project of economic justice. The book delves into the history of economics and presents Concordian economics as a response to the concerns and shortcomings of mainstream economics. Demand-side economics is represented in the process of consumption—the expenditure of monetary wealth to acquire real wealth and financial wealth of a different nature. In contrast, supply-side economics is represented in the production process, the process of producing real wealth, e.g. tables, chairs and foodstuffs. Institutionalists will also welcome this book because it ties the world of real wealth to that of monetary wealth through the process of distributing the value of ownership of both monetary and real wealth as they are created.     Abstract: Networked switched system has emerged as an essential system model in the field of control due to its accurate reflection of the wide-area distribution and typical switching characteristics of increasingly sophisticated controlled objects in engineering practice. The openness of communication networks, the limitation of communication resources, and the complexity of switching behaviors make it a challenging task to ensure the steady-state and transient performance of the output regulation of networked switched systems. This book proposes several novel methodologies for output regulation of networked switched systems from the perspective of both steady-state and transient performance. The core features of our approaches are fourfold: i) Without imposing stability requirements on individual subsystems and all switching instants, a series of innovative dwell-time switching technologies are established to handle the issue of output regulation for networked switched systems with severely unstable dynamics under event-triggering strategies in the presence of cyber attacks. ii) Taking into account switching rules and cyber attack parameters within the event-triggered control framework, event detection conditions, modal matching conditions, and event waiting conditions are constructed, and a series of new event-triggering mechanisms are proposed to effectively enhance network resource utilization and secure steady-state performance of networked switched systems. iii) Typical cyber attacks have unique consequences on the secure steady-state performance of networked switched systems with severely unstable dynamics due to the short activation time of a single subsystem and the necessity to relay the switching signal through the network. To this purpose, the consecutive asynchronous switching behaviors of the subsystem or controller resulting from a long-duration DoS attack or an integrity deception attack incorporating switching signal tampering are investigated. iv) To deal with the transient performance fluctuations of the closed-loop system caused by factors such as mismatch switching between the subsystem and the corresponding controller, data update at event-triggering instants, cyber attack blocking and tampering of transmitted data, etc., bumpless transfer control strategies are formulated in the interpolation type and multi-source type, balancing the transient and steady-state performances of the output regulation of networked switched systems.     Abstract: Using a designed vector field to guide robots to follow a given geometric desired path has found a range of practical applications, such as underwater pipeline inspection, warehouse navigation, and highway traffic monitoring. It is thus in great need to build a rigorous theory to guide practical implementations with formal guarantees. It is even so when multiple robots are required to follow predefined desired paths or maneuver on surfaces and coordinate their motions to efficiently accomplish repetitive and laborious tasks. The book introduces guiding vector fields on Euclidean spaces and Riemannian manifolds for single-robot and multi-robot path-following and motion coordination, provides rigorous theoretical guarantees of vector field guided motion control of robotic systems, and elaborates on the practical implementation of the proposed algorithms on mobile wheeled robots and fixed-wing aircraft. It provides guidelines for the robust, reliable, and safe practical implementations for robotic tasks, including path-following navigation, obstacle-avoidance, and multi-robot motion coordination. In particular, the book reveals fundamental theoretic underpinnings of guiding vector fields and applies to addressing various robot motion control problems. Notably, it answers many crucial and challenging questions such as: How to generate a general guiding vector field on any n-dimensional Riemannian manifold for robot motion control tasks? Do singular points always exist in a general guiding vector field? How to generate a guiding vector field that is free of singular points?     Abstract: By offering a critical assessment of the evolution of standard game theory, this book argues for a shift in the ontology and methodology of game theory for appraising games, one based on understanding the players’ strategic reasoning process. Analyzing the history of economic thought, the book highlights the methodological issues faced by standard game theory in its treatment of strategic reasoning and the consequence it has on the status of players' beliefs. It also highlights how the two original contributions of T. C. Schelling and M. Bacharach can be applied to these issues. Furthermore, the book assesses the intersubjective dimension in games by applying the cognitive sciences and by integrating simulation theory into game theory. Consequently, this book offers an interdisciplinary approach for reassessing the nature of the intersubjectivity involved in strategic reasoning. It shows that the analysis of games should involve the study and identification of the reasoning process that leads the players to a specific outcome, i.e., to a specific solution. A game should not be understood (as is done in standard game theory) as a mathematical representation of an individual choice at equilibrium. This requires investigating the players’ capacity for coordination. Understanding the process of coordination allows us to understand strategic reasoning and ultimately to provide new answers to the indeterminacy problem, one of the central hurdles in game theory, and one that underscores its normative difficulties.

    Abstract: The model-based approach to fault detection and diagnosis has been the subject of continuing research for several decades.     Abstract: This book offers a systematic study of control algorithms applied in the operation of solar membrane distillation (SMD) facilities. After a short introduction to membrane distillation systems powered by solar energy, it reports on the various stages of the development of a comprehensive operating strategy, based on modelling, control, and optimization techniques, which enables an improved operation of SMD plants helping the commercialization of the SMD technology. A special focus of the research was to maximize the distillate production of the MD modules while reducing their thermal energy consumption, being those two important weaknesses of the current technology, as well as their minimizing operating costs. The optimised operating strategies were tested in a real pilot plant located at Plataforma Solar de Almería (a dependency of the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas, CIEMAT, of Spain). All in all, this thesis offers extensive information on control and modeling algorithms, and on their practical applications in solar membrane distillation plants.

    Abstract: This monograph represents the outcome of research effort of the authors on scalable synchronization of large-scale multi-agent systems (MAS). Cooperative control of multi-agent systems has been growing in popularity and is highly interdisciplinary in recent years. The application of synchronization of MAS includes automobile systems, aerospace systems, multiple-satellite GPS, high-resolution satellite imagery, aircraft formations, highway traffic platooning, industrial process control with multiple processes, and more. Most of the proposed protocols in the literature for synchronization of MAS require some knowledge of the communication network such as bounds on the spectrum of the associated Laplacian matrix and the number of agents. These protocols suffer from scale fragility wherein stability properties are lost for large-scale networks or when the communication graph changes. In the past few years, the authors of this monograph have worked on developing scale-free protocol design for various cases of MAS problems. The key contribution of the monograph is to offer a scale-free design framework and provide scale-free protocols to achieve synchronization, delayed synchronization, and almost synchronization in the presence of input and communication delays, input saturation and external disturbances. The scale-free design framework solely is based on the knowledge of agent models and does not depend on information about the communication network such as the spectrum of the associated Laplacian matrix or size of the network. Drawing upon their extensive work in this area, the authors provide a thorough treatment of agents with higher-order dynamics, different classes of models for agents, and the underlying networks representing actions of the agents. The high technical level of their presentation and their rigorous mathematical approach make this monograph a timely and valuable resource that will fill a gap in the existing literature.

The book takes a model-based approach and covers a systematic approach to parameter identification for flying robots. The book aims to provide a wind speed estimate independent of the external wrench, including estimating the wind speed using motor power measurements. Aerodynamics modeling is approached in a data-driven fashion, using ground-truth measurements from a 4D wind tunnel. Finally, the book bridges the gap between trajectory tracking and interaction control, to allow physical interaction under wind influence. Theoretical results are accompanied by extensive simulation and experimental results.

    Abstract: This book presents the main results of the 19th Latin American Congress of Automatic Control held in November 2022 in Havana, Cuba. Examples of electrical motors and chemical processes are used to demonstrate the feasibility of using the proposed techniques. Part 2. Fault Diagnosis in Industrial Systems Fault diagnosis in industrial plants is a very important topic in the Industry 4.0 paradigm. In this part, new techniques of fault diagnosis in mechanical systems using Poincaré features; a real case study for predicting the time of the remaining job cycle at a water treatment plant; and a predictive fault diagnosis for isolated photovoltaic systems are presented. A novel methodology for detecting and locating cyber-attacks in water distribution networks using computational intelligence tools is also presented. Part 3. Robotic and Autonomous Systems New control strategies for path following for autonomous tractors and unmanned aquatic vehicles are analyzed in this part. Moreover, the important topic related to the battery health-aware model predictive control planning for autonomous racing vehicles and the use of robots for monitoring and remediation applications are examined. Part 4. Modeling, Identification, and Delayed Systems A model-based methodology for the efficient selection of centrifugal pumps; the use of probabilistic Boolean networks in smart grid models; the utilization of PSO metaheuristic algorithm in the selection of a model structure; and two schemes to control high-order delayed systems are among the main topics examined in this part. Low-Cost Systems and Biomedical Applications In this part, some applications of low-cost monitoring and control systems and two automatic systems used for the characterization of creatinine in wastes samples during hemodialysis process and differential acquisition of blood pressure are shown.

    Abstract: This book focuses on the observability of hybrid systems. It enables the reader to determine whether and how a hybrid system’s state can be reconstructed from sometimes necessarily partial information. By explaining how available measurements can be used to deduce past and future behaviours of a system, the authors extend this study of observability to embrace the properties of diagnosability and predictability. H-systems shows how continuous and discrete dynamics and their interaction affect the observability of this general class of hybrid systems and demonstrates that hybrid characteristics are not simply generalizations of well-known aspects of traditional dynamics. The authors identify conditions for state reconstruction, prediction and diagnosis of the occurrence of possibly faulty states. The formal approach to proving those properties for hybrid systems is accompanied by simple illustrative examples. For readers who are interested in the use of state estimation for controller design, the book also provides design methods for hybrid state observers and covers their application in some industrial cases.     Abstract: This book presents the recent research advances in linear and nonlinear control techniques. From both a theoretical and practical standpoint, motion planning and related control challenges are key parts of robotics. Indeed, the literature on the planning of geometric paths and the generation of time-based trajectories, while accounting for the compatibility of such paths and trajectories with the kinematic and dynamic constraints of a manipulator or a mobile vehicle, is extensive and rich in historical references. Path planning is vital and critical for many different types of robotics, including autonomous vehicles, multiple robots, and robot arms. In the case of multiple robot route planning, it is critical to produce a safe path that avoids colliding with objects or other robots. When designing a safe path for an aerial or underwater robot, the 3D environment must be considered. As the number of degrees of freedom on a robot arm increases, so does the difficulty of path planning. As a result, safe pathways for high-dimensional systems must be developed in a timely manner. Nonetheless, modern robotic applications, particularly those requiring one or more robots to operate in a dynamic environment (e.g., human–robot collaboration and physical interaction, surveillance, or exploration of unknown spaces with mobile agents, etc.), pose new and exciting challenges to researchers and practitioners. For instance, planning a robot's motion in a dynamic environment necessitates the real-time and online execution of difficult computational operations. The development of efficient solutions for such real-time computations, which could be offered by specially designed computational architectures, optimized algorithms, and other unique contributions, is thus a critical step in the advancement of present and future-oriented robotics. .

    Abstract: This book presents social welfare functions as a unified multidisciplinary framework for various resource allocation problems. By measuring the impact of local decisions on broader society, social welfare functions enable “socialized” decisions and thereby produce an emergent property that “global” balance and welfare emerge from “local” welfare-maximizing behaviors. Social welfare functions are originally used in economics to quantify income welfare, jointly considering average and inequality to arrive at better measures of welfare than average alone.     Abstract: We are starting to enter a post-COVID-19 life. While this pandemic has made everyone’s life challenging, it also expedited the transition of our everyday lives into a new form, often called “The New Normal.” Although many people often use the terminology, perhaps we still do not have consensus about what it is and what it should be like. However, one thing that is clear namely that robotics and artificial intelligence technologies are playing a critical role in this transition phase of our everyday lives. We saw the emergence of last-mile delivery robots on the street, AI-embedded service robots in restaurants, uninhabited shops, non-face-to-face medical services, conferences and talks in metaverses, and AI-based online education programs. This book is an edition that aims at serving researchers and practitioners in related fields with a timely dissemination of the recent progress in the areas of robotics and artificial intelligence. This book is based on a collection of papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Robot Intelligence Technology and Applications (RiTA), held at Griffith University in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The conference was held in a hybrid format on December 7–9, 2022, with the main theme “Artificial, Agile, Acute Robot Intelligence.” For better readability, the total of 41 papers are grouped into five chapters: Chapter I: Motion Planning and Control; Chapter II: Vision and Image Processing; Chapter III: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Autonomous Vehicles; Chapter IV: Learning and Classification; and Chapter V: Environmental and Societal Robotic Applications. The articles were accepted through a rigorous peer-review process and presented at the RiTA 2022 conference.     Abstract: This open access book provides a unified overview of topological obstructions to the stability and stabilization of dynamical systems defined on manifolds and an overview that is self-contained and accessible to the control-oriented graduate student. The authors review the interplay between the topology of an attractor, its domain of attraction, and the underlying manifold that is supposed to contain these sets. They present some proofs of known results in order to highlight assumptions and to develop extensions, and they provide new results showcasing the most effective methods to cope with these obstructions to stability and stabilization. Moreover, the book shows how Borsuk’s retraction theory and the index-theoretic methodology of Krasnosel’skii and Zabreiko underlie a large fraction of currently known results.
