Abstract: "This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the social history of anthropology in the United States, examining the circumstances that gave rise to the discipline and illuminating the role of anthropology in the modern world. Thomas C. Patterson considers the shifting social and political-economic conditions in which anthropological knowledge has been produced and deployed, the appearance of practices focused on particular regions or groups, the place of anthropology in structures of power, and the role of the educator in forging, perpetuating and changing representations of past and contemporary peoples. The book addresses the negative reputation that anthropology took on as an offspring of imperialism and provides fascinating insight into the social history of America. In this second edition, the material has been revised and updated including a new chapter that covers anthropological theory and practice during the turmoil created by multiple ongoing crises at the beginning of the twentieth-first century. This is valuable reading for students and scholars interested in the origins, development and theory of anthropology"--

Abstract: "The Platonic tradition affords extraordinary resources for thinking about the meaning and value of work. In this historical survey of the tradition, Jeff Hanson draws on the work of its major thinkers to explain why our contemporary vocabulary for appraising labor and its rewards is too narrow and cramped. By tracing out the Platonic lineage of work Hanson is able to argue why we should be explaining its value for appraising it as an element of a happy and flourishing human life, quite apart from its financial rewards. Beginning with Plato's extensive thinking about work's relationship to wisdom, Hanson covers the singularly powerful arguments of Augustine, who wrote the ancient world's only treatise dedicated to the topic of manual labor. He discusses Hugh of St. Victor' Didascalicon , the first text to enshrine the mechanical arts as having a place in an overall scheme of wisdom and provides a study of work in the Renaissance, a frequently overlooked but fascinating era. Alongside Martin Luther, who, finally made of work a fully mundane reality while still encircling that world with a theological horizon, Hanson discusses Ruskin and Weil: two thinkers profoundly disturbed by the conditions of the working class in the rapidly industrializing economies of Europe. For Plato and his inheritors. successful and satisfying work must be situated in a just and harmonious social order. This original study of their ideas provides practical suggestions of how to approach work in a socially responsible manner in the 21st century and reveals the benefits of linking work and morality."--

Abstract: "As flooding, drought and water scarcity become more pronounced due to climate change, so the way in which these events are presented in the media assumes greater significance. In particular, the media plays an important role in shaping the public perception and understanding of water issues, and debates around extreme weather events more generally. Joanne Garde-Hansen's book offers a sustained and comprehensive exploration of media representations of water. Drawing on a wide range of media - including newspapers, digital, photography, radio, television and video, as well as empirical research on media and memory - she examines how drought, flooding and water management have been portrayed in the media, both historically and in the contemporary world. The use of the media by water institutions to manage public perceptions and the use of digital media by the public to engage with water companies is also included. A particular feature of the book is an examination of water and gender in developed nations. One of the first books to look at media representations of water, this pioneering work provides valuable insights for both scholarly and professional water research."--

Abstract: "Why do twins remain uncanny to those born alone--in other words, most of us? Even with the rise of IVF and an increase in multiple births, why do we still do "a double take" when we encounter twins? Why has this been a near-universal response throughout human history, and how has it played out in religion and myth? Through the work of leading scholars in religion, folklore and mythology, anthropology, and archaeology, Gemini and the Sacred explores the sacred imagination of twinship and the relationship of twin traditions to "twins on the ground" in biology and in lived experience. The book considers the multiple ways in which the "doubling" of a human being may be religiously and culturally expressed as auspicious and powerful--or suppressed as unstable and dangerous. Treating both famous and lesser-known twins--including supernatural animal twins--in the ancient Near Eastern and classical Mediterranean worlds; early Christianity and Gnosticism; West African, Afro-Atlantic, and native American traditions; ancient Mesoamerica; Celtic Roman Britain; and Scandinavia, the book offers a variety of perspectives on this fascinating topic. Gemini and the Sacred makes a major contribution to a field of great cultural significance."--

Abstract: "Wolfgang Ernst's new work, Technológos in Being, in its explicit media-scientific approach, aligns with the politics of the thinking media series to publish innovative works that advance media studies towards the 'new sciences.' Ernst's invites readers to re-adjust their ideas of Media Studies: the conviction that an extended understanding of "medium" needs to include a concept of materiality that focuses on "non- human" agencies as well. The book grounds media analysis radically in the technological apparatuses, relays, transistors, hard- and software, to precisely locate the scenes, operations and frictions where reasoning logos and 'informable' matter interfere."--

Abstract: "This book is the first attempt to rethink and appraise the role of temporary commoning experiences that develop in contexts of crisis. Activist and urban planner, Angelos Varvarousis, argues that there is a certain type of commons - the liminal commons - which despite their often short lives play a crucial function in contemporary societies; they demarcate and facilitate transitions at the individual, collective and ultimately the societal level. Through an intense exploration of grassroots projects such as occupied squares, self-organised refugee camps, solidarity food structures and social clinics in crisis-ridden Greece, the author observes that humans still invent such collectively performed rituals in order to prepare, symbolize and practically explore the possibility of transformation and transition. In a period in which traditional rites of passage have faded away but many changes are urgently needed, liminal commons can be a key element in the process of claiming awareness and control over the mechanisms of individual, collective and societal emancipation."--

Abstract: "This book offers a panoramic assessment of access to transitional justice from a gender perspective. Dealing with conflict, justice and women, it also contains a post-colonial theoretical component. It offers a deep analysis of the situation in Timor-Leste. Empirical evidence drawn from interviews with female participants in its post-conflict reconciliations and reparations mechanisms, as well as from judges and prosecutors, gives a fascinating insight into precisely how justice was served. In so doing it contributes to debates concerning women's participation in transitional justice and addresses how gender equality should be conceived in post-conflict states seeking to rebuild. Human rights scholars, practitioner as well as NGO workers will find this unique and thought-provoking study invaluable."--

Abstract: "Elisa Giomi and Sveva Magaraggia propose that men engage in violent conduct at a higher rate than women because they are socially and culturally 'programmed' to do so. Popular culture representations play a crucial role in this process: TV series, films, pop music and videos, advertising commercials and tabloids all tend to 'normalise' violence against women as an allegedly natural inclination of males. Violent women, on the other hand, are believed to transgress both criminal and 'natural' laws, according to which they are supposed to give life, not death. By examining popular culture's depiction of men and women in their opposite, yet complementary, roles of perpetrators and victims, the authors show unexplored interconnections, namely that gender 'does' violence and violence 'does' gender. Empirical evidence is presented drawing on the following case studies: - male violence in contemporary Italian pop music - female violence in crime TV series including The Killing (Denmark, 2007-2012), The Fall (UK, 2013-2016) and True Detective (USA, 2015) - the use and abuse of gendered violence in Italian and international advertising images such as billboards and posters - male and female intimate partner violence in factual entertainment (Who the (bleep) Did I Marry? (Investigation Discovery, 2010-2015))."--

Abstract: "Drawing on unprecedented access to the video archives of B'Tselem, an Israeli NGO that distributes cameras to Palestinians living in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, Liat Berdugo lays out an argument for a visual studies approach to videographic evidence in Israel/Palestine. Using video stills as core material, it discusses the politics of videographic evidence in Israel/Palestine by demonstrating that the conflict is one that has produced an inequality of visual rights. The book highlights visual surveillance and counter surveillance at the citizen level, how Palestinians originally filmed to ?shoot back? at Israelis, who were armed with shooting power via weapons as the occupying force. It also traces how Israeli private citizens began filming back at Palestinians with their own cameras, including personal cell phone cameras, thus creating a simultaneous, echoing counter surveillance. Complicating the notion that visual evidence alone can secure justice, the Weaponized Camera in The Middle East asks how what is seen, but also who is seeing, affects how conflicts are visually recorded. Drawing on over 5,000 hours of footage, only a fraction of which is easily accessible to the public domain, this book offers a unique perspective on the strategies and battlegrounds of the Israel/Palestine conflict."--

Abstract: "How was alcohol consumed, produced and regulated in the early modern world? What impact did medicine, gender and sexuality, and religion have on the use of alcohol in this period? This book examines how the profound religious, political and intellectual shifts that characterize the early modern period both affected and were affected by alcohol. Themes that the chapters address include discussions on how identity impacted drinking behaviours, the association of alcohol with the spiritual as well as the physical world, and the challenge of reconciling positive and negative attitudes towards alcoholic drinks and the effects they produce."--

Abstract: "How might we best understand the relationship between the vibrant religious landscapes we see in many cities, and contemporary urban social processes? Through case studies drawn from around the world, this book explores the ways in which these processes interact in cities. Contributors engage contemporary theoretical debates in the social sciences to explain why it seems self-evident to many educated members of liberal democratic societies that religion is becoming privatized and marginalized in modern cities; and why, more recently, data has shown cities to be hubs of religious innovation and complexity. By examining religious events and festivals in specific urban settings, this book sheds light on the history and the future of religion as both an analytical category and as a set of observable phenomena. It is a significant contribution to understanding emerging patterns in contemporary religion and also for theories related to heritagization, eventization, globalization, urbanization, secularization, revitalization."--

Abstract: "By interrogating the terms and concepts most central to cultural change, Future Theory interrogates how theory can play a central role in dynamic transition. It demonstrates how entangled the highly politicized spheres of cultural production, scientific invention, and intellectual discourse are in the contemporary world and how new concepts and forms of thinking are crucial to embarking upon change. Future Theory is built around five key concepts - boundaries, organization, rupture, novelty, futurity - examined by leading international thinkers to build a vision of how theory can be applied to a constantly shifting world"--

Abstract: "What is the relationship between leadership and peace? What kind of leadership styles, processes and strategies are required to gain a deeper understanding of local context while at the same time maintaining the trust and cooperation of host authorities and other stakeholders on the ground? As concerns mount about the continued relevance and efficiency of UN peace operations, Youssef Mahmoud - who led several challenging peace missions in Africa - draws on many years of experience to offer insights into how political leadership might be exercised to help restore and nurture peace. Mahmoud makes the case for a paradigm shift in the type of leadership required to bring about strong, global diplomacy for peace. Making extensive use of the authors' unique personal experiences in Burundi, Central African Republic and Chad, the book offers an unparalleled insight into the leadership challenges of complex and often seemingly intractable conflict situations."--

Abstract: "Under the leadership of the Justice and Development Party in Turkey came new regulations about reproductive rights, family and gender policies. Women's central role in reproductive and domestic work was swiftly reaffirmed as a state value and policies surrounding issues such as abortion and IVF were newly debated. Taking Turkey as the case study, this is the first book to examine the various ways in which neoliberal modes of governing women's bodies come together with conservative and authoritarian measures. The book is divided into three parts - the 'reproductive' body, the 'maternal' body and the 'sexualized' body - to explore the three main governmental representations of, and interventions into, the female body. Topics for discussion include: the increasing control of poor or ethnic minority women's fertility, the expansion of IVF and egg markets, the commodification of pregnancy and motherhood through surrogacy, and the privatization of gynaecological and obstetrical care. The contributors argue that conservative and authoritarian forms of government lead to a direct assault on women's bodies, health and sexuality by legitimizing corporeal control, sexual violence and patriarchal conceptions of religious morality. While focusing on the Turkish case, the editors also propose analytical tools for a broader understanding of the recent changes in the politics of the female body in various contexts such as Eastern Europe, Latin America and the United States."--

Abstract: "This book argues that the changing character of Muslim community and their living space in Delhi is a product of historical processes. The discourse of homeland and the realities of Partition established the notion of 'Muslim-dominated areas' as 'exclusionary' and 'contested' zones. These localities turned out to be those pockets where the dominant ideas of nation had to be engineered, materialized and practiced. The book makes an attempt to revisit these complexities by investigating community-space relationship in colonial and postcolonial Delhi. It raises two fundamental questions: è How did community and space relation come to be defined on religious lines? è In what ways were 'Muslim-dominated' areas perceived as contested zones? Invoking the ideas of homeland as a useful vantage point to enter into the wider discourse around the conceptualization of space, the book suggests that the relation between Muslim communities and their living spaces has evolved out of a long process of politicization and communalization of space in Delhi."--

Abstract: "While highlighting the prevailing role of television in Western societies, Art vs. TV maps and condenses a comprehensive history of the relationships of art and television. With a particular focus on the link between reality and representation, Francesco Spampinato analyzes video art works, installations, performances, interventions and television programs made by contemporary artists as forms of resistance to and appropriation and parody of mainstream television. The artists discussed belong to different generations: those that emerged in the 1960s in association with art movements such as Pop Art, Fluxus and Happening; and those appearing on the scene in the 1980s, whose work aimed at deconstructing media representation in line with postmodernist theories; to those arriving in the 2000s, an era in which, through reality shows and the Internet, anybody could potentially become a media personality; and finally those active in the 2010s, whose work reflects on how old media like television has definitively vaporized through the electronic highways of cyberspace. These works and phenomena elicit a tension between art and television, exposing an incongruence; an impossibility not only to converge but at the very least to open up a dialogical exchange."--

Abstract: "The first scholarly discussion on the band, Pearl Jam and Philosophy examines both the songs (music and lyrics) and the activities (live performances, political commitments) of one of the most celebrated and charismatic rock bands of the last 25 years. The book investigates the philosophical aspects of their music at various levels: existential, spiritual, ethical, political, and aesthetic. Through this widespread philosophical examination, the book further looks into the band's immense popularity and commercial success, their deeply loyal fanbase and genuine sense of community surrounding their music, and the pivotal place the band holds within popular music culture."--

Abstract: "How do contemporary teenagers experience and understand religious, spiritual, gender and sexual diversity? How are their experiences mediated by where they go to school, their faith and their geographic location? Are their outlooks materialist, religious, spiritual, or do they have hybrid identities? Freedoms, Faiths and Futures: Teenage Australians on Religion, Sexuality and Diversity offers powerful insight into how teenagers make sense of the world around them. Drawing on rich data from a major national study, this book creates new ways of understanding the complexity of young people's lives and how school education covering diversity best addresses their world. This book argues that school education focused on worldviews is founded on ways of thinking about young people that do not reflect the complexities of Generation Z's everyday experiences of diversity and their interactions with each other. It argues that certain kinds of education in schools can play a significant role in developing religious literacy, tolerance and positive attitudes to diversity."--

Abstract: "Exploring a prominent digital mythology, this book proposes a new way of viewing both online narratives and the online communities which tell them. The Slender Man ? a monster known for making children disappear and causing violent deaths to the adults who seek to know more about him - is used as an extended case study to explore the role of digital communities, as well as the question of the existence of a broader "digital culture". Structural anthropological mythic analysis and ethnographic details demonstrate how the Slender Man mythology is structured, and how its everlasting nature in the online communities demonstrates an importance of the mythos."--

Abstract: "Rachel Loewen Walker's original study of Deleuze's theory of temporality critically expands our understanding of non-linear time through engagement with queer theory and new feminist materialisms. Loewen draws on the notion of non-linear time in Deleuze's work to advance a conception of 'the living present' as a critical juncture through which new meanings and activism in the fields of feminism, environment, and queerness may be realised. Using literary texts by Jeanette Winterson, and philosophical texts by Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigaray, Walker reflects on monomythic stories about gender, sexuality, and identity in the context of rapid climate change, and posthumanist politics to tread new ground for Deleuzian studies of time. Speaking to and from feminist, queer, environmental, trans, and crip political movements, Walker uses Deleuze to argue for a 'lived present' which is both mutable and embodied. Such characteristics are presented as essential components in the construction of meaning that is not bound by a static present, past or future. Queer and Deleuzian Temporalities: Toward a Living Present pinpoints the importance of feminist and queer theory to a critical re-evaluation of time. Through a wide-ranging analysis we are able to see how everyone is embedded within rather than outside of time, opening up the possibility for imagining and realising alternate futures both for ourselves and the environment."--

Abstract: "Analysing marginality from an analytic perspective and drawing on canonical theories by Dilthey, Collingwood, Wittgenstein, Foucault, John McDowell, Susan Carey and Michael Tomasello, this book is an important contribution to ongoing debates on marginality among psychiatrists, psychologists, social scientists and philosophers. Psychology often resorts to overambitious theorising due to a perceived pressure to justify its scientific credentials. Taking the cases of preverbal children and mentally ill patients, this book shows that applying overarching and unifying explanations to marginal subjects is problematic, arguing instead that those at the margins should be given their proper explanatory autonomy. George Tudorie examines recent cognitive theories on early development in children to reveal the difficulties of conceptualising the emergence of human abilities, while also demonstrating how cognitive accounts of psychosis, built around conceptual 'belief-desire-intention' psychology, eventually falter. In doing so, he reveals that interpretation is not a route psychology can take at the margins and calls for a clearer view of explanatory options in marginal cases."--

Abstract: "Since the 1991-2002 civil conflict ended in Sierra Leone, the country has failed to translate the accomplishments of women's involvement in bringing the war to an end into meaningful political empowerment. This is in marked contrast to other post-conflict countries, which have increased the political participation of women in elected and appointed office, increased the representation of women in leadership positions, and enacted constitutional reforms promoting women's rights. Written by Sierra Leonean and Africanist scholars and experts from a broad range of disciplines, this unique volume analyses the historical and contextual factors influencing women's political, economic and social development in the country. In drawing on a diverse array of case studies - from health to education, refugees to international donors - the contradictions, successes and challenges of women's lives in a post-conflict environment are revealed, making this an essential book for anyone involved in women and development."--
