    Abstract: The different written and archaeological sources give a very heterogeneous picture of the social and religious structures in Eastern Middle Europe. Recent developments in modern archaeological and historical research have shown new approaches to the analysis of elites. In every society there is a leading minority, who cumulates both wealth and prestige and is characterized by an elevated social rank, reputation and acceptance. An external marker of these elites is especially the superregional transfer of certain items, but also of the culturally encoded value systems. The present study asks whether this notion of cultural transfer, developed in the context of modern history, can be applied as well to the study of mutual influences between the elites of medieval Western and Eastern Middle Europe. It also raises the question if this terminology is equally useful for the analysis of written and material sources, and to what extent it might open a new perspective on the rich but as yet often unexplored history of the lands east of the Elbe river.〈p〉So unterschiedlich Schriftquellen und Bodenfunde des östlichen Mitteleuropas auch Zeugnis ablegen, so stimmen sie darin überein, ein sehr heterogenes Bild von der inneren gesellschaftlichen und religiösen Struktur der gentes zu liefern. Die gegenwärtige Entwicklung in der Archäologie und Geschichtswissenschaft zeigt neue Betrachtungsweisen in der Untersuchung von Eliten. In jeder Gesellschaft existiert eine Reichtum und Prestige auf sich ziehende führende Minderheit: Sie wird durch eine hohe soziale Position gekennzeichnet, aber auch durch Ansehen und Anerkennung. Als äußeres Kennzeichen der Eliten zeichnet sich dabei besonders der überregionale Transfer einzelner Güter und ihrer kulturell kodierten Wertsysteme ab. Doch eignet sich die eigentlich an neuzeitlichen Verhältnissen entwickelte Vorstellung des Kulturtransfers auch zur Untersuchung wechselseitiger Beeinflussungen der Eliten des westlichen und östlichen Mitteleuropas im Mittelalter? Ist es gleichermaßen für die Untersuchung schriftlicher wie materieller Quellen geeignet? Öffnet es einen neuen Blick auf die reiche, überbordende und zugleich noch vielfach verschlossene Geschichte des Raumes östlich der Elbe?

Gerade in Griechenland verlief die Wiederentdeckung der klassischen Landschaften im Zuge der Renaissance sehr langsam und zögerlich, denn das Land war als Teil des Osmanischen Reiches recht schwer zugänglich. Selbst in das berühmte Delphi wagten sich nur relativ wenige Reisende, und die Rahmenbedingungen,unter denen diese Reisen dann stattfanden, waren sehr bemerkenswert. Ausführliche Berichte von bildungsbewußten Reisenden, abenteuerlustigen Händlern und unter anderem militärisch interessierten Diplomaten sind daher auch heute noch eine interessante und häufig sehr vergnügliche Quelle für die regionalen Zustände in Mittelgriechenland. Diese Zusammenstellung zeigt einerseits, wie sehr sich die beiden Landschaften Phokis und Lokris im Mittelalter und während der Zugehörigkeit zum Osmanischen Reich verändert haben, andererseits aber auch, wie groß der Schritt vom Königreich Griechenland bis in die heutige Zeit ist

    Abstract: Skalne oblike so pomembna sled oblikovanja in razvoja površinskih kraških pojavov. Še zlasti bogat je njihov zapis na različnih škrapljah. Razkriva nam številne dejavnike, ki v raznovrstnih razmerah oblikujejo kraško površje na različnih karbonatnih in drugih kamninah. Skušali smo zajeti najbolj značilne skalne oblike in skozi njih najbolj pomembne dejavnike in procese oblikovanja kraškega površja ter načine njihovega raziskovanja in najbolj izrazite primere. Širok spekter vsebine razkriva tudi nabor 49 avtorjev in primeri skalnih oblik s številnih kraških področji sveta. Prvi del knjige smiselno podaja pregled najbolj značilnih skalnih oblik in njihov opis, predstavlja fizikalno-kemično raztapljanje kamnine, biokorozijo, modeliranje skalnih oblik, njihovo podrobno morfometrijo ter številne opise posameznih skalnih oblik. Drugi del knjige je posvečen različnim primerom skalnih oblik širom sveta od Slovenije, prek severne in južne Amerike do Avstralije in Azije

King Roderigo, the last Visigoth king of Spain, rapes (or possibly seduces) La Cava, the daughter of his friend and counselor, Count Julian. In revenge, the count travels to North Africa and conspires with its Berber rulers to send an invading army into Spain. So begins the Muslim conquest and the end of Visigothic rule. A few years later, in Northern Spain, Pelayo initiates a Christian resistance and starts a new line of kings to which the present-day Spanish monarchy traces its roots.Patricia E. Grieve follows the evolution of this story from the Middle Ages into the modern era, as shifts in religious tolerance and cultural acceptance influenced its retelling. She explains how increasing anti-Semitism came to be woven into the tale during the Christian conquest of the peninsula-in the form of traitorous Jewish conspirators. In the sixteenth century, the tale was linked to the looming threat of the Ottoman Turks. The story continued to resonate through the Enlightenment and into modern historiography, revealing the complex interactions of racial and religious conflict and evolving ideas of women's sexuality.In following the story of La Cava, Rodrigo, and Pelayo, Grieve explains how foundational myths and popular legends articulate struggles for national identity.     Abstract: Knjiga podaja večplastne odgovore na obseg in vzroke prostorskih, pa tudi družbenih, gospodarskih in fiziognomskih sprememb na slovenskem podeželju. Predstavlja rezultate interdisciplinarnega raziskovalnega pristopa pri prepoznavanju prostorskih sprememb in načrtovanju razvojnih usmeritev. Podrobne raziskave so izvedene na treh pilotnih območjih, izbranih tako, da je zajet presek značilnih slovenskih makropokrajinskih enot, obenem pa so pokriti tako procesi intenzifikacije kot marginalizacije v pokrajini. Za vsako pilotno območje so pripravljeni razvojni scenariji v treh različicah.     Abstract: Žitje protopopa Avvakuma je bilo napisano v sredini 17. stoletja, ki je v ruski zgodovini nenaključno označeno za »prehodno«. Stoletje spreminjanja in nepomirljivih trenj so pogojevale okoliščine dogodkov, katerih zgodovinski oris se omejuje predvsem na obdobje, ko se zgodi prelomna cerkvena reforma. Takrat se je zgodil cerkveni razkol in so bili iz Ruske cerkve izobčeni t. i. razkolniki, ki so se zavzemali za ohranitev pretekle staroruske tradicije tako v bogoslužju kakor tudi v pismenosti in celo v vsakdanjem življenju. »Prehodno stoletje« pa je avtorica predstavila skozi »oči« razkolnika protopopa Avvakuma: njegovo življenje (biografija), družbena in literarna dejavnost so povezani v celosten in vsestranski prikaz njegovega (v žitju izpričanega) religioznega nazora. Njegovo »življenjsko« delo pa je literarno besedilo, v mnogem prelomno v zgodovini ruske književnosti, saj pisano izpod roke neanonimnega avtorja in naslovljeno kot Žitje, odpira vprašanje o začetkih avtobiografije v Rusiji

    Abstract: The text-critical edition Turjaška knjiga listin II [Turjak Book of Charters II], containing 436 published documents from the 15th century, completes the medieval corpus of charters from the private archives of the Carniolan comital and ducal lines of the Auerspergs. Published in their entirety, the charters are equipped with Slovenian regests and followed in the end by a comprehensive index of names and pictures of seals from the charters.The Auerspergs [Turjaški] are among the rare noble families in the Slovenian territory with systematically preserved archives that date back to the Middle Ages. Most archival materials of the family, which was largely embedded in the framework of the Province of Carniola until the end of the 15th century, are presently kept in two private family archives: the Turjak Comital Fideicomiss Archives (Gräflich Auersperg'sches Fideikommisarchiv), first kept in the Turjak Castle until 1942 and now in the Carinthian Provincial Archives in Klagenfurt, and the Turjak Ducal Archives (Fürstlich Auersperg'sches Archiv), which were first moved to the Turjak Palace in Ljubljana and the Lower Austrian Lösensteinleiten Castle and finally ended up in the Viennese Haus-, Hof-, und Staatsarchiv

    Abstract: The monograph presents Badenian calcareous nannoplankton from NE Slovenia. Several hundred samples from 22 measured sections have been studied. In total, 109 species of calcareous nannoplankton are determined and described, many of which are new to Slovenia. The entire interval studied was assigned to the Middle Miocene. The excellent preservation and high species diversity enabled a precise subdivision of this interval into 6 successive interval zones, correlated with the absolute time scale (15.5 - 13.1 Ma) and with the 3rd order eustatic cycles (TB2.3, TB2.4 and TB2.5). Lists of all examined nannoplankton assemblages and their paleoecological analyses are also included. The monograph is a comprehensive review of the taxonomy, biostratigraphy and paleoecology of Miocene calcareous nannoplankton in the western part of the Central Paratethys
    Abstract: Monografija predstavlja rezultate celovite študije kalcitnega nanoplanktona iz badenijskih plasti Slovenskih goric. Iz več sto vzorcev z 22 posnetih profilov je določenih in opisanih 109 vrst nanofosilov, mnoge med njimi so nove za Slovenijo. Preučevani interval je v celoti uvrščen v srednji miocen. Odlična ohranjenost nanofosilov in velika diverziteta sta omogočili zelo natančno razdelitev obravnavanega intervala na 6 lokalnih intervalnih con, ki so korelirane z absolutno časovno lestvico (15,5-13,1 milijonov let) ter z globalnimi evstatičnimi cikli 3. reda (TB2.3, TB2.4 in TB2.5). Monografija vsebuje tudi podatke o sestavi vseh obravnavanih nanoplanktonskih združb in podaja paleoekološko analizo. Monografija je izčrpen prikaz taksonomije, biostratigrafije in paleoekologije miocenskega kalcitnega nanoplanktona v zahodnem delu Centralne Paratetide

Welche Argumente wurden dabei von den Usurpatoren benutzt, welche Strategien verfolgt, um den Untertanen, namentlich den Angehörigen der Eliten, die Rechtmäßigkeit der eigenen Machtausübung schlüssig plausibel zu machen? Während die Abbasiden behaupteten, als Verwandte des verstorbenen Propheten Mohammed über ein spezielles, erbliches Charisma zu verfügen, das ihnen den Zugang zu einem unvergleichlichen, islamisch begründeten Herrschaftswissen eröffne, konstruierten die Karolinger mit Hilfe der Kirche, namentlich des römischen Papsttums, ein besonderes Amtscharisma, mit dessen Hilfe sie sich als Exponenten eines verchristlichten Herrschertums und als geistliche Verwandte des Nachfolgers des heiligen Petrus inszenierten. Trotz aller Unterschiede versuchten beide Dynastien, sich als Exponenten eines sakral konnotierten Herrschertums zu etablieren. Die konkreten Spielräume, die sich den politischen Akteuren eröffneten, hingen jedoch entscheidend von den historischen Rahmenbedingungen ab, namentlich vom jeweiligen Stadium der religiösen Traditionsbildung und den vorherrschenden religiös-kulturellen Paradigmen zur Vergangenheitsrezeption. Untersucht werden erb- und amtscharismatische Konzeptualisierungen der Herrschaft, Fragen der Rekrutierung von Eliten sowie Probleme der Instrumentalisierung und Transformation religiöser Vorstellungen zum Zweck der Integration politischer Gemeinwesen. Die Arbeit unternimmt eine umfassende Kontextualisierung zweier "Ereignisse" der politischen Geschichte, wobei sie Fragestellungen der Religions-, Kultur- und Sozialgeschichte aufgreift und funktionale Äquivalente in den beiden untersuchten religiös-politischen Systemen aufzeigt. Das Instrumentarium des Vergleichs ist wesentlich von den Kategorien Max Webers und Pierre Bourdieus inspiriert, wobei der methodische Ansatz des Vergleichs unter Aufnahme von Anregungen der neueren Globalgeschichte weiterentwickelt wird. Durch die Analyse zweier komplementärer Phänomene aus der christlich-lateinischen sowie der arabisch-islamischen Geschichte leistet die Arbeit einen Beitrag zur Konzeptualisierung einer politischen Kulturgeschichte in der Vormoderne. Die theoriegeleitete, komparative und problemorientierte Untersuchung macht Methoden und Konzepte der Historischen Komparatistik für die Frühmittelalterforschung fruchtbar und unterstützt auf diese Weise die geschichtswissenschaftliche und mediävistische Theoriebildung

    Abstract: The plan of spatial arrangement, which was given to us by the real estate developer to asses (environmental report and the estimation of the susceptibility of impacts on protected areas), deals with 80 hectars of the north-western part of Lipica Stud Farm, which covers the area of the existing golf course as well as the area of its foreseen expansion. We tried to establish, describe and evaluate all the important aspects of plan realization, taking into consideration all of the environmental goals and area characteristics based on the different segments of the environment. A major impact would be seen only in the potentially special protected area of Kras, more precisely on the group of beetles, among which we stress "Morimus funereus" as the qualification bird species of Natura 2000. We suggested the exclusion of 17 hectars of the area from further operations and the establishment of the new distribution of some individual golf-fields. The improved suggestion incorporates the exclusion of a stripe of the western part of the area in question, where there is a habitat of Morimus funereus. This change would also mean the preservation of fossile sites and of maple forests
    Abstract: Načrt prostorskih ureditev obravnava 80 hektarjev severozahodnega dela Kobilarne Lipica, kjer sta obstoječe igrišče za golf in območje njegove predvidene razširitve. Ugotavljali, ovrednotili in opisali smo pomembne vplive izvedbe načrta, pri čemer smo po različnih segmentih okolja upoštevali okoljske cilje in značilnosti območja. Ob razširitvi igrišča bi bil opaznejši vpliv le na potencialno posebno ohranitveno območje Kras, in sicer na skupino hroščev, med katerimi je kot kvalifikacijska vrsta Nature 2000 izpostavljen bukov kozliček (Morimus funereus). Zato smo iz nadaljnjih posegov predlagali izločitev območja, velikega 17 ha. Popravljen predlog upošteva izločitev območja na zahodu obravnavanega območja, kjer je habitat bukovega kozlička, s to spremembo pa bi zavarovali tudi nahajališča fosilov in lepo ohranjene javorove gozdove

    Abstract: Garden-plot areas spontaneously developed and were distributed across the entire flat area of Ljubljana. Due to a new, more urban lifestyle and a policy change by the city authorities, the area of garden plots fell considerably at the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first centuries. The most recent analysis of plot gardening in the City of Ljubljana, which surveyed 302 plot gardeners, showed that the overall infrastructure available in garden-plot areas is relatively poor. This activity is mainly practiced by older and lower-income people, most of whom live in apartment buildings. Due to pesticide residues and heavy metals in the soil and produce, as well as groundwater contamination, plot gardening poses a threat to public health and the environment. The 2008 Draft Ljubljana Zoning Implementation Plan foresees a reduction in the total area of plot-gardening areas by nearly half~however, even the planned community garden plots include some that do not meet the minimum location standards. Some garden-plot areas are problematic primarily because they are located close to major traffic routes. In the future, plot gardeners will have to be more systematically informed and educated about proper and safe use of fertilizers and pesticides
    Abstract: Vrtičkarstvo je nastalo zaradi družbenih, gospodarskih in prostočasnih potreb človeka v mestnem okolju, najprej v industrijskih srednjeevropskih deželah, od koder se je razširilo v vse razvite države sveta. Na območju Ljubljane so bila stihijsko rastoča vrtičkarska območja razporejena po vsem ravninskem delu. Vrhunec v razprostranjenosti so dosegla v devetdesetih letih 20. stoletja. Knjiga je namenjena tako vrtičkarjem kot načrtovalcem mestnega razvoja, pa tudi študentom, politikom in vsem občanom, ki jim ni vseeno za prihodnji prostorski razvoj slovenskega glavnega mesta. Dejstvo je, da so tako rekoč vsa vrtičkarska območja v Mestni občini Ljubljana navezana na zemljišča na vodovarstvenem območju. Zaradi ostankov fitofarmacevtskih sredstev in težkih kovin v prsti ali tleh in pridelani hrani ter onesnaževanja podzemne vode vrtičkarstvo predstavlja tveganje za zdravje ljudi in okolje

    Abstract: Izhodišče teoretičnega dela monografije je raziskovanje pomena spola za razumevanje migracijskih procesov in njihovih različnih klasifikacij. Z analizo uveljavljenih pristopov migracijskih in sorodnih študij avtorica pokaže, da je že sama definicija pojma migrant proces, ki vključuje procese vključevanja kot tudi izključevanja. S pomočjo analize življenjskih zgodb migrantk avtorica skuša v monografiji pojasniti širše družbene okoliščine migracije, kar je še vedno, navkljub porastu števila kvalitativnih študij na področju migracijske teorije v zadnjih dveh desetletjih, manko bolj uveljavljenih pristopov. Prednost raziskave je v tem, da je temeljni poudarek na izkušnjah in perspektivah migrantk samih. Z združitvijo teoretičnih in epistemoloških izhodišč tako na področju migracijskih študij kot ženskih študij oziroma študij spolov pa besedilo prispeva k obogatitvi vednosti na obeh področjih

    Abstract: The artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and the writer Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) both convey in their work a sense of foreboding and confinement in bleak, ritualistic spaces. This book identifies many similarities between the spaces and activities they evoke and the initiatory practices of fraternal orders and secret societies that were an integral part of the social landscape of the Ireland experienced by both men during childhood. Many of these Irish societies modelled their ritual structures and symbolism on the Masonic Order. Freemasons use the term 'spurious Freemasonry' to designate those rituals not sanctioned by the Grand Lodge. The Masonic author Albert Mackey argues that the spurious forms were those derived from the various cult practices of the classical world and describes these initiatory practices as 'a course of severe and arduous trials'. This reading of Bacon's and Beckett's work draws on theories of trauma to suggest that there may be a disturbing link between Bacon's stark imagery, Beckett's obscure performances and the unofficial use of Masonic rites

Die zahlreichen deutschen Reaktionen auf Bekker in den Jahren zwischen der ersten (1693) und der zweiten (1781–82) Verdeutschung seiner Schrift werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit erstmals detailliert analysiert, um so seinen Einfluss auf das deutsche Geistesleben sowie seine gesellschaftliche Wirkung dort zu rekonstruieren.     Abstract: Constitutional considerations of protective laws for women were the analytical battlefield on which the legal community reworked the balance between private liberty and the state's authority to regulate. Julie Novkov focuses on the importance of gender as an analytical category for the legal system. During the Progressive Era and New Deal, courts often invalidated generalized protective legislation, but frequently upheld measures that limited women's terms and conditions of labor. The book explores the reasoning in such cases that were decided between 1873 and 1937. By analyzing all reported opinion on the state and federal level, as well as materials from the women's movement and briefs filed in the U.S. Supreme Court, the study demonstrates that considerations of cases involving women's measures ultimately came to drive the development of doctrine. The study combines historical institutionalism and feminism to address constitutional interpretation, showing that an analysis of conflict over the meaning of legal categories provides a deeper understanding of constitutional development. In doing so, it rejects purely political interpretations of the so-called Lochner era, in which the courts invalidated many legislative efforts to ameliorate the worst effects of capitalism. By addressing the dynamic interactions among interested laypersons, attorneys, and judges, it demonstrates that no individuals or institutions have complete control over the generation of constitutional meaning. Bentham gilt als Begründer einer der wichtigsten philosophischen Strömungen des angelsächsischen Sprachraums: dem Utilitarismus. Dass Bentham zugleich einer der ersten Rechtspositivisten der Denkgeschichte, ein brillanter Rechtstheoretiker und ein sprachphilosophischer und psychologischer Pionier war, weiß man dort auch schon seit Jahrzehnten. Auf dem europäischen Kontinent hingegen -- und in Deutschland insbesondere -- ist die Rezeption von Benthams Werk bedauerlich schmal. Dem hilft diese Arbeit ein Stück weit ab. Hart ein und entwickelt eine hochinteressante Rechts- und Staatstheorie.     Abstract: The continued existence of the Russian defence and arms industry (OPK) was called into question following the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. Industry experts cited the lack of a domestic market, endemic corruption, and excess capacity within the industry as factors underpinning its predicted demise. However, the industry's export customers in China, India and Iran during those early years became the OPK's saving grace. Their orders introduced hard currency back into the industry and went a long way to preventing the forecasted OPK collapse. Although pessimistic predictions continued to plague the OPK throughout the 1990s, the valuable export dollars provided the OPK the breathing space it needed to claw back its competitive advantage as an arms producer. That revival has been further underpinned by a new political commitment, various research and development initiatives, and the restoration of defence industry as a tool of Russian foreign policy.The short-term future of the Russian OPK looks promising. The rising domestic defence order is beginning to challenge the export market as the OPK's most important customer. Meanwhile, exports will be safeguarded by continued foreign demand for niche Russian defence products. Although the long-term future of the OPK is more difficult to predict, Russia's solid research and development foundation and successful international joint military ventures suggest that the current thriving trend in exports is likely to continue. Russia represents the next generation of affordable and rugged military equipment for the arsenals of the developing world. Coupled with Russia's growing ability to rearm itself through higher oil prices and a more streamlined defence industry, the future of the OPK looks bright
