Abstract: Since the 1960s, San Francisco has been America's capital of sexual libertinism and a potent symbol in its culture wars. In this highly original book, Josh Sides explains how this happened, unearthing long-forgotten stories of the city's sexual revolutionaries, as well as the legions of longtime San Franciscans who tried to protect their vision of a moral metropolis. Erotic dancers, prostitutes, birth control advocates, pornographers, free lovers, and gay libbers transformed San Francisco's political landscape and its neighborhoods in ways seldom appreciated. But as sex radicals became more vi.

Abstract: Increasingly, economists have acknowledged that a major limitation to economic theory has been its failure to incorporate human values and beliefs as motivational factors. Conversely, the economic underpinnings of ritual practice are under-theorized and therefore not accessible to economists working on synthetic theories of human choice. This book addresses the problem by bringing together anthropologists with diverse backgrounds in the study of religion and economy to forge an analytical vocabulary that constitutes the building blocks of a theory of ritual economythe process of provisioning and consuming that materializes and substantiates worldview for managing meanings and shaping interpretations. The chapters in Part I explore how values and beliefs structure the dual processes of provisioning and consuming. Contributions to Part II consider how ritual and economic processes interlink to materialize and substantiate worldview. Chapters in Part III examine how people and institutions craft and assert worldview through ritual and economic action to manage meaning and shape interpretation. In Part IV, Jeremy Sabloff outlines the road ahead for developing the theory of ritual economy. By focusing on the intersection of cosmology and material transfers, the contributors push economic theory towards a more socially informed perspective.

Abstract: What causes revolution? What brought about the end of the last major monarchies of the modern period? Were Louis XVI, Nicholas II, and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi the unwitting victims of historical circumstance, or did their own actions help to bring about the revolutions that overthrew them? This powerful and original book is the first comparative study of the revolutions in Bourbon France, Romanov Russia and Pahlavi Iran. Zhand Shakibi analyses fully the timing and causes of these three revolutions and reveals the important similarities between them. "Revolutions and the Collapse of Monarchy.

Abstract: Same-sex marriage emerged in 2004 as one of the hottest issues of the campaign season. But in a severe blow to gay rights advocates, all eleven states that had the issue on the ballot passed amendments banning the practice, and the subject soon dropped off the media?s radar. This pattern of waxing and waning in the public eye has characterized the debate over same-sex marriage since 1996 and the passing of the Defense of Marriage Act. Since then, court rulings and local legislatures have kept the issue alive in the political sphere, and conservatives and gay rights advocates have made the issu.

Abstract: "The examination of women and violence has traditionally focused on women who are killed or who are the victims of violence. Women murderers were often portrayed as vengeful wronged women or as maternal protectors. Recently, however, there have been significant shifts in the characterization of women who kill, in both popular culture (Lara Croft, Buffy, and Kill Bill) and in the current global political landscape (the so-called angels of death in Palestine). The essays in this book explore gender and violence by focusing on visual culture -- films, museums, art, archives, and the news media -- and by engaging with contemporary theories and practices of identity politics and the debates about the ethics and politics of representation itself. Does representation create or recreate the conditions of violence? Is representation itself a form of violence? Weaving between fact and fiction, the contributors examine the powerful role culture plays in the production and reproduction of social meaning. The collection offers fresh analyses of well-established sources for the study of women and violence, including the horror film and the court trials of women who have killed their abusive husbands. It adds significant new dimensions to the characterization of gender and violence with the inclusion of nationalism and war, feminist media, and the exploration of violence circulated through non-obvious sources, such as medical cultural practice and the information society."--Page 4 of cover.

Abstract: How did thousands of Chinese migrants end up working alongside African Americans in Louisiana after the Civil War? With the answer to this question and stories of these workers, Coolies and Cane advances a view of emancipation that moves beyond U.S. borders and the black-white racial dynamic. Tracing the source of Asian labor to the sugar plantations of the Caribbean, Moon-Ho Jung argues that the racial stereotypes of "coolies" played a pivotal role in reconstructing concepts of race, nation, and citizenship in the United States. Jung examines how the Chinese appeared in major U.S. political debates on race, labor, and immigration between the 1830s and 1880s. He finds that white conceptions of "coolies" were articulated in many, often contradictory, ways. These laborers could mark the progress of freedom; they could remind Southerners of the barbarism of slavery. Welcomed and rejected as neither black nor white, "coolies" emerged recurrently as both the salvation of the fracturing and reuniting nation and a threat to American civilization. Based on extensive archival research, this study makes sense of these contradictions to reveal how American impulses to recruit and exclude Chinese labor enabled and justified a series of historical transitions: from slave-trade laws to racially coded immigration laws, from a slaveholding nation to a "nation of immigrants," and from a continental empire of manifest destiny to a liberating empire across the seas. Combining political, cultural, and social history, Coolies and Cane is a compelling study of race, Reconstruction, and Asian American history.--Publisher description.

Abstract: The movement of nation building in Islamic societies away from the secular or Pan-Arab models of the early twentieth century toward a variety of 'nationalisms' was accompanied by growing antagonism between the Muslim majority and ethnic or religious minorities. The papers in "Nationalism and Minority Identities in Islamic Societies" offer a comparative analysis of how these minorities developed their own distinctive identities within the modern Islamic nation-state. The essays focus on identity formation in five minority groups - Copts in Egypt, Baha'is and Christians in Pakistan, Berbers in Algeria and Morocco, and Kurds in Turkey and Iraq. While every minority community is distinctive, the experiences of each show that a state's authoritarian rule, uncompromising attitude towards expressions of particularism, and failure to offer tools for inclusion are all responsible for the politicization and radicalization of minority identities. The place of Islam in this process is complex: while its initial pluralistic role was transformed through the creation of the modern nation-state, the radicalization of society in turn radicalized and politicized minority identities. Minority groups, though at times possessing a measure of political autonomy, remain intensely vulnerable. -- Back cover.

Abstract: This collection of 19 papers celebrates the coming of age of the field of politeness studies, now in its 30th year. It begins with an investigation of the meaning of politeness, especially linguistic politeness, and presents a short history of the field of linguistic politeness studies, showing how such studies go beyond the boundaries of conventional linguistic work, incorporating, as they do, non-language insights. The emphasis of the volume is on non-Western languages and the ways linguistic politeness is achieved with them. Many, if not most, studies have focused on Western languages, but.
