    Note: Das Thema "Kultur" hat seit dem sogenannten "cultural turn" in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften eine enorme Konjunktur erfahren. Die damit verbundene These einer paradigmatischen Wende auch der Soziologie ist wenig überzeugend. Am Beispiel der Entwicklung von Vornamen über 100 Jahre wird gezeigt, dass man sehr gut mit dem klassischen Instrumentarium der Soziologie und dessen wissenschaftstheoretischer Begründung arbeiten kann, um Erkenntnisse über die Kulturentwicklung einer Gesellschaft zu produzieren. Am Beispiel der Vergabe von Vornamen lassen sich kulturelle Modernisierungsprozesse empirisch beschreiben und strukturell erklären: Die traditionellen Ligaturen Familie, Religion und Bindung an die Nation verlieren im Zeitverlauf in der Strukturierung der Vergabe von Vornamen an Bedeutung, Prozesse der Individualisierung und der Globalisierung gewinnen hingegen an Relevanz. Dabei lassen sich schicht- und geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede beobachten. Die hier vorgelegte Studie versteht sich einerseits als eine empirische Analyse kultureller Modernisierungsprozesse am Beispiel von Vornamen, sie versteht sich andererseits als eine exemplarische Einführung in die Kultursoziologie. Am Beispiel der Analyse von Vornamen werden die Möglichkeiten eines spezifischen Verständnisses von Kultursoziologie erläutert. Karen Joisten wendet sich diesem Problemkreis zu, indem sie das Konzept entwirft, der Mensch zeichne sich durch eine Doppelstruktur aus, die sprachlich in der Wendung Heim-weg zum Ausdruck gebracht wird. Während der Bestandteil Heim- auf die heimische Seite des Menschen verweist, die es ihm ermöglicht, Bindungen einzugehen und in sich zu wohnen, verweist der Bestandteil –weg auf die weghafte Seite des Menschen, die dazu führt, daß er permanent unterwegs sein muß, also bei keiner eingenommenen Haltung und Einsicht stehenbleiben kann. Im ersten Teil des Buches werden unterschiedliche Weisen des In-Beziehung-Seins des Menschen zum Raum, zur Zeit und zum Mitmenschen analysiert, sowohl in bezug auf seine heimhafte als auch auf seine weghafte Seite. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung stehen dabei die Grundphänomene Geborgenheit, Ruhe und Vertrauen. Zugleich werden vier Hauptwege, auf und in denen sich der Mensch primär bewegt und ausrichtet, gekennzeichnet: das Wandern in der Natur, das Gehen auf der Straße, das Fahren auf der Straße und das Surfen im Netz. Im zweiten Teil des Bandes setzt sich die Autorin mit grundlegenden philosophiehistorischen Antworten auf die Frage auseinander, was unter Heimat zu verstehen ist, bezieht sie auf die Deutung des Menschen und macht sie fruchtbar für die moderne Diskussion

    Abstract: Main description: Die Außenpolitik der DDR ist bis heute weitgehend eine "terra incognita". Joachim Scholtyseck betritt mit seinem Lehrbuch also Neuland: Er führt systematisch in die Außenpolitik des "zweiten deutschen Staates" ein und diskutiert außerdem die Interpretationen und Kontroversen der Forschung. In einer einzigartigen politischen Konstruktion musste die DDR einerseits Außenpolitik auch als Deutschlandpolitik betreiben. Andererseits blieb sie bis zu ihrem Untergang ein von der UdSSR abhängiges Gebilde. Wie alle Akteure war die DDR in die Bedingungen der internationalen Politik in den Zeiten des Kalten Krieges, der Détente und schließlich des "Zweiten Kalten Krieges" eingebettet. Ihre Außenbeziehungen stellten zudem einen Sonderfall dar, weil eine Außenpolitik unter marxistischen Vorzeichen einen radikalen Bruch mit bisherigen Traditionen der deutschen Geschichte bedeutete. Joachim Scholtyseck, geboren 1958, ist Professor für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte an der Universität Bonn

    Abstract: Cultural pluralisation - reinforced by immigration - has had major consequences for the political agenda in recent years in liberal democratic states. New types of tension have arisen - new forms of social and cultural differentiation, and new patterns of inequality. The diversity also reshapes the frame of reference for traditional policy instruments employed by modern welfare states: new issues arise that are linked to rights, legitimacy and policy measures of a general and targeted nature. This volume in the "Comparative Social Research" series addresses a number of issues related to this new diversity. Common themes are multiculturalism, power and integration, and these themes are analysed through a comparative lens

    Abstract: This book is intended to fill in a gap in the study of modern ethno-national diasporas. Thus, against the background of current trends - globalization, democratization, the weakening of the nation-state and massive transstate migration, it examines the politics of historical, modern and incipient ethno-national diasporas. It argues that unlike the widely accepted view, ethno-national diasporism and diasporas do not constitute a recent phenomenon. Rather, this is a perennial phenomenon whose roots were in antiquity. Some of the existing diasporas were created in antiquity, some during the Middle Ages and some are modern. An essential aspect of this phenomenon is the endless cultural-social-economic and especially political struggle of these dispersed ethnic groups that permanently reside in host countries away from their homelands to maintain their distinctive identities and connections with their homelands and other dispersed groups of the same nation. While describing and analyzing the diaspora phenomenon, the book sheds light on theoretical questions pertaining to current ethnicity and politics

    Abstract: Transactions often differ on important dimensions from spot exchanges on perfect neo-classical markets. Information is seldom complete and instantaneous exchange is just as rare as full competition. The authors in this volume extend the standard economic model stressing the proposition that the social context is an important determinant of the governance of transactions. To foster the development of a body of cumulative knowledge in the new economic sociology, this approach is consistently applied to a diversity of topics including purchase relations, strategic alliances, and relations among lawyers and clients as well as employers and employees. This volume is divided in three parts. The first part surveys purposive behaviour models in research on governance as well as theoretical work extending these models. The contributions in the second and third part all have an empirical component and deal with governance in the various phases of exchange relations: search and selection, negotiating and contracting, contract execution and performance, and conflict regulation. The second part focuses on governance in markets, while the third part discusses governance in organizations

    Abstract: How do we know music? We perform it, we compose it, we sing it in the shower, we cook, sleep and dance to it. Eventually we think and write about it. This book represents the culmination of such shared processes. Each of these essays, written by leading writers on popular music, is analytical in some sense, but none of them treats analysis as an end in itself. With the end of the Cold War, the spread of globalization, and the extension of economic regulatory regimes, democratization has come to be seen as important to securing long-term political stability. Much has been written about democratization and gender in works on human rights, citizenship, women's movements and challenges to authoritarian regimes. This book, published in association with the United Nations, builds on this existing body of literature by looking at the relevance of national machineries for the advancement of women. Appropriate mechanisms through which the mainstreaming of gender can take place are considered, and the levels of governance involved - the relationship between gender mainstreaming and state structures, and the effect of this relationship on issues of decentralization, accountability, consultation and participation. It defines what the 'interests of women' are, and how and by what processes these interests are represented to the state policy making structures. Global strategies for the advancement of women, and how far these have penetrated at national level are considered. It contains original chapters from eminent writers on gender and ageing, addressing newly emergent areas within gender and ageing, including gender identity and masculinity in later life. Early work on gender and ageing was dominated by a focus on older women. The present collection breaks with this tradition by emphasizing changing gender roles and relationships, gender identity and an examination of masculinities in midlife and later life. A key theme running through the book is the need to reconceptualize partnership status, in order to understand the implications for women and men of widowhood, divorce and new forms of relationships, such as Living Apart Together (LAT-relationships). Another is the influence of socio-economic circumstances on how ageing is experienced and transitions are negotiated. The book illustrates new ways of thinking about old age and indicates policy implications, especially concerning the nature of service provision for older people. Anhand eines systematischen Vergleichs werden im Rahmen einer historischen und einer interaktionstheoretischen Analyse Gemeinsamkeiten, Unterschiede, Beispiele wechselseitiger Beeinflussung sowie Parallelen in der historischen Genese und der alltäglichen Reproduktion von Geschlecht und Ethnie in sozialen Interaktionen herausgearbeitet. Die Arbeit stellt einen ersten Schritt dar auf dem Weg hin zu einer Systematisierung und Theoretisierung der Interferenzen und Wechselwirkungen verschiedener Ungleichheitsdimensionen

Was sind die strukturellen Bedingungen und die normativen Voraussetzungen der Interaktion von Medien und Politik in der Bundesrepublik und den USA? Diese Fragen versucht der Band zu beantworten, indem er die Einstellungen, Normen und Wertorientierungen von politischen Sprechern im Umfeld der Regierung und von Journalisten in Washington und Bonn analysiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich die politischen Kommunikationskulturen in beiden Ländern systematisch unterscheiden: Während das Verhältnis von Sprechern und Journalisten in den USA durch das Diktat der Medienregeln geprägt ist, orientieren sich die Kommunikationsbeziehungen in der Bundesrepublik an sozialem Konsens und letztlich an (partei)politischen Kalkülen. Dies liegt nicht zuletzt an den Strukturen des politischen Prozesses und des Mediensystems

    Abstract: Studies of social movements and of political parties have usually treated them as separate and distinct. In fact they are deeply intertwined. Social movements often shape electoral competition and party policies; they can even give rise to new parties. At the same time, political parties and campaigns shape the opportunities, personnel, and outcomes of social movements. In many countries, electoral democracy itself is the outcome of social movement actions. This book, first published in 2003, examines the interaction of social movements and party politics since the 1950s, both in the United States and around the world. In studies of the US Civil Rights movement, the New Left, the Czechoslovak dissident movements, the Mexican struggle for democracy, and other episodes, this volume shows how party politics and social movements cannot be understood without appreciating their intimate relationship

    Abstract: The management of and communication about risks has become a major question of public policy and intellectual debate in the modern world. The social amplification of risk framework describes how both social and individual factors act to amplify or dampen perceptions of risk and through this create secondary effects such as stigmatisation of technologies, economic losses or regulatory impacts. This volume, edited by three of the world's leading analysts of risk and its communication, brings together contributions from a group of international experts working in the field of risk perception and risk communication. Key conceptual issues are discussed as well as a range of recent case studies (spanning BSE and food safety, AIDS/HIV, nuclear power, child protection, Y2K, electromagnetic fields, and waste incineration) that take forward the state-of-the-art in risk amplification theory. The volume also draws attention to lessons for public policy, risk management and risk communication practice
