    Abstract: In the Hobsbawmian long 19th century, gender and processes of sexualization and feminization have been crucial in the construction of the »Jewish Other«. Ulrike Brunotte explores how these processes came about by addressing imaginative, aesthetic, and epistemological questions. She analyzes how literature, psychoanalysis and the performing arts traverse and react to the ambivalence of racialized stereotypes. The »femininity puzzle« presents itself in two ways: first in the role of effeminization of the male Jew in antisemitic discourse, and then in the transgressive forms of femininity connected to Jewish women, especially the allosemitic Orientalization in the figure of the »Beautiful Jewess«

    Abstract: How the Jewish and Christian communities that emerged in the early Roman Empire navigated a 'Hellenistic' world is a longstanding and unsettled question. Recent scholarship on the intellectual cultures that developed among Greek speaking subjects of Rome in the so-called Second Sophistic as well as models for culture and competition informed by mathematical and economic game theories provide new ideas to address this question. This study offers a model for a kind of culture-making that accounts for how the cultural ecosystems of the Roman Empire enabled these religious communities to win legitimacy and build discourses of self-expression by competing on the same cultural fields as other Roman subjects. By considering a range of texts and figures-including Justin Martyr, Tatian, the 'second' Paul of the Acts of the Apostles, Lucian of Samosata, 4 Maccabees, and Favorinus of Arelate-this study contends that competing for legitimacy enabled those fledgling religious communities to express coherent cultural identities and secure social credibility within the complex milieu of Roman Imperial society

    Abstract: The Reformation was essentially a religious renewal of Christianity in Europe. As such, it has contributed decisively, along with the Renaissance and humanism, to the formation of a secular modernity. What exactly was this contribution and how is it to be assessed? Have Reformation movements destroyed the traditional unity of the church and the state, of society and culture, and in so doing instigated the marginalisation of Christianity in Europe? Or have they brought central impulses of Christianity to the fore, without which Western modernity could not developed, and which also characterise a society that understands itself as secular in a plural late modern era? The present volume attempts to shed light on these controversial questions. Criticisms levelled at reformed traditions by the secular modernism standpoint as well as those aimed at European modernity and late-modernity from the camp of reformed thinking are also given a voice

In this strongly comparative study, at once historical and anthropological, Peel explores the intertwined character of the three religions and the dense imbrication of religion in all other aspects of Yoruba history up to the present. For over 400 years, the Yoruba have straddled two geocultural spheres: one reaching north over the Sahara to the world of Islam, the other linking them to the Euro-American world via the Atlantic. These two external spheres were the source of contrasting cultural influences, notably those emanating from the world religions. Moreover, the Yoruba not only imported Islam and Christianity; they exported their own orisa-religion to the New World. Before the voluntary modern diaspora that has brought many Yoruba to Euro-America, tens of thousands had been sold as slaves to the New World, bringing with them the worship of the orisa. Along the way, Peel not only offers deep insight into such important contemporary themes as religious conversion, new religious movements, relations between world religions, the conditions of religious violence, the transnational flows of contemporary religion, and the interplay between tradition and the demands of an ever-changing present but also makes a major theoretical contribution to the anthropology of world religions."--Provided by publisher.

    Abstract: The papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War.     Abstract: The Mechanisation of Natural Philosophy is devoted to various aspects of the transformation of natural philosophy during the 16th and 17th centuries that is usually described as mechanical philosophy .Drawing the border between the old Aristotelianism and the « new » mechanical philosophy faces historians with a delicate task, if not an impossible mission. There were many natural philosophers who actually crossed the border between the two worlds, and, inside each of these worlds, there was a vast spectrum of doctrines, arguments and intellectual practices. The expression mechanical philosophy is burdened with ambiguities. It may refer to at least three different enterprises: a description of nature in mathematical terms; the comparison of natural phenomena to existing or imaginary machines; the use in natural philosophy of mechanical analogies, i.e. analogies conceived in terms of matter and motion alone.However mechanical philosophy is defined, its ambition was greater than its real successes. There were few mathematisations of phenomena. The machines of mechanical philosophers were not only imaginary, but had little to do with the machines of mecanicians.     Abstract: How people relate to time is one of the oldest questions of mankind. This book centers on 'life phases' to show how the life cycle is structured, and it discusses how various theological and literary models denote and divide up the different phases of life. These life-phase models reflect congruent or contrasting overall concepts of time. Using examples from texts from the Ancient Near Eastern era up to the 20th century, the contributions in the book discuss how the different life phases were construed and what potential the respective life phases offer for a time-critical reflection

    Abstract: This volume, which draws on new sources, presents the Jewish salons of Berlin around 1800 as a lively and at the same time fragile network of communication. The salon society of 1794/95, the book's year of focus, reveals a culture of sociality in which highly diverse venues could become 'salons' and it puts the salons' guests and hostesses (back) in the limelight. Selected profiles of the correspondence, which sometimes lasted for decades and has now been reconstructed, allow an examination of possible interactions between salons and the contemporary discourse on emancipatory issues.

    Abstract: Der eingereichte Band beinhaltet die gelehrte Korrespondenz der Melker Geschichtsforscher Bernhard und Hieronymus Pez OSB aus den Jahren 1709 bis 1715. Die kommentierte Edition wurde im Rahmen eines FWF-Projekts (P-16940) in den Jahren 2004 bis 2008 unter der Leitung von Prof. Winfried Stelzer am Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung von Thomas Wallnig und Thomas Stockinger erarbeitet. Dieser Antrag um Druckförderung ergeht parallel zum Endbericht dieses Projekts an den FWF.Die Bedeutung der Pez-Korrespondenz, von der mit dem vorliegenden Band rund ein Viertel erstmals der wissenschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wird, liegt in zwei Bereichen. Zum einen erlaubt die europäische Dimension des Briefwechsels eine grundlegende Neuverortung Österreichs und Süddeutschlands innerhalb der europäischen Geistesgeschichte des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts sowie im Rahmen der gelehrten Praxis und Kommunikationskultur der Res publica literaria. Zum anderen ermöglicht die prosopographische Ausrichtung der Korrespondenz - sie zielt auf die Sammlung bio-bibliographischer Daten zu gelehrten Benediktinern des 16. bis 18.     Abstract: The submitted manuscript for Vol. I. comprises the learned correspondence of the Benedictine historians Bernhard and Hieronymus Pez of Melk abbey from the years 1709 to 1715. The edition and commentary were prepared between 2004 and 2008 within FWF project P-16940 under the direction of Prof. Winfried Stelzer by Thomas Wallnig and Thomas Stockinger at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research, Vienna. The submission of the work for publication is being filed concurrently with the final report on the project to the FWF. The significance of the Pez letters, of which the submitted volume will make roughly one quarter available to the public for the first time, is twofold. On the one hand, the European scope of the correspondence leads to a re-evaluation of the position of Austria and southern Germany within European intellectual history of the early 18th century and within the erudite practice and culture of communication in the Republic of Letters. On the other hand, the prosopographical orientation of the brothers' project (a collection of bio-bibliographical data on Benedictine authors of the 16th to 18th century) provides the beginnings of an inventory and topography of a nearly undiscovered intellectual landscape.The volume contains: an introduction sketching the various monastic and erudite contexts of the correspondence, presenting learned letters as a literary genre, and setting out the principles of the edition; the edition itself, which gives 261 extant letters in the original Latin with critical notes, German summaries and commentary, and which also registers 211 lost letters; an appendix with biographical information on the 82 correspondents and four tables (letters by correspondents, letters in chronological order, items enclosed with the letters, mentioned letters between third persons); sources and bibliography; finally a cumulative bio-bibliographical index.Publication is envisioned within the series "Quelleneditionen des Instituts für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung" (Böhlau publishing house) as the first of four planned volumes of the correspondence. The publication is primarily aimed at researchers in Austrian history, intellectual history and history of education, and ecclesiastical history, but is also potentially of interest to the disciplines of art history, history of publishing, and also to medievalists in view of the numerous mentions of the location and usage of manuscripts

Er gehoert zu den ersten, die ein Konzept der politischen Religion entwickelten. Sein 1935 verfasster Beitrag konnte damals nicht publiziert werden.Heute ist eine Edition dieses Beitrages zum einen wichtig für die Theologie- und Kirchengeschichte. Zum anderen gibt es seit einigen Jahren in der historischen Forschung eine intensive Diskussion über die in den Dreissigerjahren des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelte Interpretation des „Dritten Reiches“ als „politische Religion“. Dieses Modell, das Diktaturen, insbesondere den Nationalsozialismus, als „politische Religion“ versteht, wird im Allgemeinen Eric Voegelin und Raymond Aron zugeschrieben, die ihre Ansaetze 1938 bzw. 1939 publizierten.Dass Paul Schuetz schon drei bzw. vier Jahre zuvor eine solche Konzeption entwickelt hatte, war bis vor Kurzem nicht bekannt.     Abstract: The fourth volume of the "Hamburg Historical research" includes mainly the edition of an so far unpublished text. The author is the theologian Prof. Dr. Dr. Paul Schuetz (1891-1985), who was chief minister from 1940 to 1952 at the Hamburg Main St. Nikolai church and as a full-time lecturer and professor of theology at the University Church of Hamburg. He is among the first who developed a concept of political religion. His 1935 contribution couldn't be published at this time.Today an edition of this contribution is important for theology and church history. Also there is the discussion in historical research of interpreting the "Third Reich" as a "political religion". This model understands dictatorships, especially the National Socialism, as a "political religion", is generally attributed to Eric Voegelin and Raymond Aron, who published their approaches in 1938 and 1939. The fact that Paul Schuetz had three or four years previously developed such a conception, was until recently unknown. The present edition can therefore give new impetus to the debate about the history and viability of this approach and enrich their content

    Abstract: This book is a collection of articles by Italian and foreign scholars designed to offer an overview of the processes and issues involved in the history of the confraternity movement, as yielded by studies in the historical, social, legal, literary and artistic spheres in the course of the twentieth century. The articles deal with the historical context of western Europe, and more specifically with Italy, in the period comprised between the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age. The collection is divided into four sections: Individuals and groups, which explores the emergence of an interest in confraternity communities in disciplines addressing the history of social groups, of the rural world, of women and of young people. The legal and institutional framework deals with issues of legitimacy and institutional structure. The economics of charity analyses the relations between the confraternities and the hospital structures, the procedures for the administration of the assets, and the strategies of governance underlying the policies of aid of which the confraternities were the principal instrument. Finally, the section Theatrical, musical, artistic and documentary evidence is devoted to the sources that have handed down evidence of the operation of the confraternities

    Abstract: Als "einen der interessantesten katholischen Missionare im Südlichen Afrika" bezeichnet die Historikerin Joy Brain den Tiroler Priester Franz Mayr in ihrem Vorwort zu dieser umfangreichen Quellenedition. Die gesammelten, aus zahlreichen Archiven im In- und Ausland stammenden Schriften Mayrs, umfassen Briefe, Tagebucheinträge, Auszüge aus Chroniken, seine in Missions- und ethnologischen Zeitschriften und Tageszeitungen erschienenen Artikel sowie zahlreiche zeitgenössische Photographien. Obwohl unser Land bzw. die Habsburger-Monarchie selbst keine Kolonien auf diesem Kontinent besaß, wirkte doch eine beträchtliche Anzahl von ihnen u. a. in katholischen Stationen. Ihre Rolle in der Interaktion mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung und die Wirkung ihrer Missionsartikel auf das Afrikabild ist bisher nahezu unerforscht geblieben. Mayr war nur einer jener Österreicher und Österreicherinnen, die im Zuge der katholischen Missionseuphorie des 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts ausreisten, um Afrikaner und Afrikanerinnen zum Christentum zu "bekehren". Er wurde 1865 in der Osttiroler Gemeinde Nussdorf geboren und verbrachte seine Gymnasialzeit in Brixen, wo er auch das Priesterseminar absolvierte. Ab 1890 wirkte er in der ehemaligen britischen Kolonie Natal (Südafrika), in Südrhodesien (heutiges Zimbabwe) und in Swaziland, wo er 1914 einem Mordanschlag zum Opfer fiel. Unter seiner Leitung entstanden mehrere Missionsstationen u. a. das Projekt "Maryvale", ein Dorf für die einheimischen katholischen Zulus, heute ein Stadtteil von Pietermaritzburg. Über die vorhandenen Quellen erhält man Einblick in den Alltag des Missionars, Informationen über Hemmnisse seiner Arbeit und über Erfolgserlebnisse, seine Einstellung zur afrikanischen Bevölkerung, zur jeweiligen Kolonialregierung, zu anderen Religionsgemeinschaften oder über seinen persönlichen Gemütszustand. F. Mayr schrieb mehrere Bücher in afrikanischen Sprachen, hatte ein Faible für Musik und Photographie und sammelte leidenschaftlich ethnologische Gegenstände, die er teilweise afrikanischen Museen überließ, teilweise für Ausstellungen nach Europa sandte. Erst kürzlich entdeckte man im Herbarium der "Universität von Natal" eine Pflanzensammlung, die er angelegt hatte.     Abstract: Franz Mayr was "one of the most interesting of catholic missionaries in Southern Africa" states Professor Joy Brain ("University of Durban") in the foreword she wrote for this first edition of his writings. Mayr was born in the Austrian province of Tyrol in 1865, educated as a priest in the diocese of Brixen and arrived in Natal (South Africa) at the beginning of May 1890, inspired by the work being done there by the Trappist-Monks led by Abbot Franz Pfanner. Mayr was physically handicapped and soon left the trappists but just to offer his services to the vicar apostolic of Natal, Bishop Charles Jolivet, who accepted him for work among the African population. He was sent to Pietermaritzburg then capital of the British colony to take over the care of the African parishioners to bring the "good news" to those who had never heard it. He founded several new mission-stations in Natal, Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe) and Swaziland where he was killed by a native robber in 1914. Mayr - a man of many talents - was a gifted linguist, studied and published books in several African languages. He was interested in cultural anthropology and collected information about African customs. It is now more than a hundred years since Franz Mayr began his work of evangelisation and scholarship in Southern Africa. Publishing his letters and articles - kept by several archives in Europe - should help to remember a man of the Habsburg-Monarchy who went to preach the gospel to the so called heathen of Africa. Although Austria or Austria-Hungary never owned colonies in Africa many of its inhabitants left their homes to work in catholic mission-stations around the continent. Several introductory chapters in this book explain the particular historical context which has to be put into consideration when reading Mayrs' writings. From there we learn about his life, his work, how he treated the native population, what he thought about other religious congregations around him, the colonialists and about troubles when trying to convince people to believe in the only - the "European God". The missionary deserves to be better known. The present edition of historical sources is to be seen as a most relevant step allowing us to interpret his personality adequately

    Abstract: In January 1998 leading scholars from Europe, the United States, and Israel in the fields of medieval encyclopedias (Arabic, Latin and Hebrew) and medieval Jewish philosophy and science gathered together at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat-Gan, Israel, for an international conference on medieval Hebrew encyclopedias of science and philosophy. The primary purpose of the conference was to explore and define the structure, sources, nature, and characteristics of the medieval Hebrew encyclopedias of science and philosophy. This book, the first to devote itself to the medieval Hebrew encyclopedias of science and philosophy, contains revised versions of the papers that were prepared for this conference. This volume also includes an annotated translation of Moritz Steinschneider's groundbreaking discussion of this subject in his Die hebraeischen Übersetzungen. The Medieval Hebrew Encyclopedias of Science and Philosophy will be of particular interest to students of medieval philosophy and science, Jewish intellectual history, the history of ideas, and pre-modern Western encyclopedias

    Abstract: The appearance of religious toleration combined with the intensification of the search for theological truth led to a unique phenomenon in early modern Europe: Jewish Christians and Christian Jews. These essays will demonstrate that the cross-fertilization of these two religions, which for so long had a tradition of hostility towards each other, not only affected developments within the two groups but in many ways foreshadowed the emergence of the Enlightenment and the evolution of modern religious freedom
