    Abstract: "'Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials' examines how the modification, destruction, or absence of monuments and memorials can be viewed as performative acts that challenge prescribed, embodied narratives in the public realm. Bringing together international, multidisciplinary approaches, the chapters in this volume interrogate the ways in which memorial constructions disclose implicitly and explicitly the proxy battle for public memory and identity, particularly since 2015. Acknowledging the ways in which the past — which is given agency through monuments and memorials — intrudes into daily life, this volume offers perspectives from researchers that answer questions about the roles of monuments and memorials as persistent, yet mutable, works whose meanings are not fixed but are, rather, subject to processes of continual re-interpretation. By using monuments and memorials as lenses through which to view race, memory, and the legacies of war, power, and subjugation, this volume demonstrates how these works, and their visible representations of entitlement, possession, control, and authority, can offer the opportunity to pose and answer questions about whose memory matters and what our symbols say about who we are and what we value. Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials is essential reading for scholars and students studying cultural heritage, history, art history, and public history. It will be particularly useful to those with an interest in public monuments and memorials; colonial and post-colonial history; memory studies; and nationalism, race, and ethnic studies."

In der Geobotanik geht es um die Beziehungen der Pflanzen zu ihren Wuchsorten, zum Boden und zum Klima. Daher setzt geobotanisches Arbeiten stets auch die Auseinandersetzung mit Geologie, Geographie und Klimatologie, aber vor allem mit historischen Abläufen und kulturgeschichtlichen Fachgebieten voraus. Es müssen immer wieder Brücken geschlagen werden von naturwissenschaftlichen zu kulturwissenschaftlichen Themen. Diese Form von Interdisziplinarität ermöglicht es, eine Heimat zu erkennen und zu beschreiben. Über Landschaften, Heimaten und deren Pflanzen hat Hansjörg Küster in den letzten Jahrzehnten immer wieder publiziert, für Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen, Überblicksdarstellungen und Handbücher. Oft stehen Landschaften im Mittelpunkt, die man als Heimaten verstehen kann und in denen man Menschen aus Nah und Fern integrieren kann - wenn man nur darüber spricht. Die Beiträge dieses Buches geben dafür vielerlei Anregungen.

    Abstract: ‘Race Is Everything’ looks at ideas of ‘racial science’ in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, and how art was influenced by them. It looks at race in general, but with a particular concentration on attitudes towards and representations of people of African and Jewish descent. David Bindman argues that behind all racial ideas is the belief that outward appearance, and especially skull-shape, can be correlated with inner character and intelligence, and that these could be used to create a seemingly scientific hierarchy of races. This book considers many aspects, including the skull as a racial marker; ancient Egypt as a precedent for Southern slavery; Darwin, race and aesthetics; the ‘Mediterranean race’; the visual aspects of eugenics; and the racial politics of Emil Nolde.

    Abstract: In Immeasurable Weather Sara J. Grossman explores how environmental data collection has been central to the larger project of settler colonialism in the United States. She draws on an extensive archive of historical and meteorological data spanning two centuries to show how American scientific institutions used information about the weather to establish and reinforce the foundations of a white patriarchal settler society. Grossman outlines the relationship between climate data and state power in key moments in the history of American weather science, from the nineteenth-century public data-gathering practices of settler farmers and teachers and the automation of weather data during the Dust Bowl to the role of meteorological satellites in data science's integration into the militarized state. Throughout, Grossman shows that weather science reproduced the natural world as something to be measured, owned, and exploited. This data gathering, she contends, gave coherence to a national weather project and to a notion of the nation itself, demonstrating that weather science's impact cannot be reduced to a set of quantifiable phenomena

    Abstract: Im Anschluss an bisherige Forschungen zu Heimatzeitschriften der Deutschen in und aus dem östlichen Europa am IVDE Freiburg rückten in den letzten Jahren Fragestellungen zu ihrer visuellen Gestaltung ins Blickfeld. Erste Untersuchungen waren der Gestaltung von Titelseiten, medienspezifischen Werbeanzeigen oder beteiligten Akteuren gewidmet. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nähern sich dieser Thematik an und ergänzen bisherige Ergebnisse mit neuen Aspekten. Neben Überlegungen zu Brüchen und Kontinuitäten bei der visuellen Konstruktion von Periodika, die an Vorgängerzeitschriften in den Herkunftsgebieten anknüpften, werden Bildmotive, Bild-Text-Bezüge und unterschiedliche Deutungskontexte bei Kunstwerken und Fotografien diskutiert. Weitere Beiträge erörtern ausgewählte Gesichtspunkte der Geschichte der Fotografie in den Ländern der Böhmischen Krone und der Bildmotive in der Amateurfotografie vor 1945 sowie die Reproduktion solcher Aufnahmen in Heimatzeitschriften nach 1945. Auch Fragen der frühen fotografischen Reportage in den 1950er-Jahren und des fotografischen Blickes von Heimatreisenden werden beleuchtet. Ein Bericht über die Neuerungen des Online-Handbuchs Heimatpresse sowie der Fotografen- und Künstlerdatenbank schließt den Sammelband ab.     Abstract: Looking back over the centuries, migration has always formed an important part of human existence. Spatial mobility emerges as a key driver of urban evolution, characterized by situation-specific combinations of opportunities, restrictions, and fears. This collection of essays investigates interactions between European cities and migration between the early modern period and the present. Building on conceptual approaches from history, sociology, and cultural studies, twelve contributions focus on policies, representations, and the impact on local communities more generally. Combining case-studies and theoretical reflections, the volume's contributions engage with a variety of topics and disciplinary perspectives yet also with several common themes. One revolves around problems of definition, both in terms of demarcating cities from their surroundings and of distinguishing migration in a narrower sense from other forms of short- and long-distance mobility. Further shared concerns include the integration of multiple analytical scales, contextual factors, and diachronic variables (such as urbanization, industrialization, and the digital revolution)

    Abstract: In 1893, a group of colonial officials from thirteen countries abandoned their imperial rivalry and established the International Colonial Institute (ICI), which became the world's most important colonial think tank of the twentieth century. Through the lens of the ICI, Florian Wagner argues that this international cooperation reshaped colonialism as a transimperial and governmental policy. The book demonstrates that the ICI's strategy of using indigenous institutions and customary laws to encourage colonial development served to maintain colonial rule even beyond the official end of empires. By selectively choosing loyalists among the colonized to participate in the ICI, it increased their autonomy while equally delegitimizing more radical claims for independence. The book presents a detailed study of the ICI's creation, the transcolonial activities of its prominent members, its interactions with the League of Nations and fascist governments, and its role in laying the groundwork for the structural and discursive dependence of the Global South after 1945

    Abstract: Das romantische Bild der innigen naturgegebenen Beziehung von Mutter und Kind prägt bis heute das Klischee der Mutterrolle. Wie ist dieses Bild von Mutterschaft entstanden? In ihrer Dissertation erforscht Sandra Busch die Verbindung von maternalistischen Grundmustern und Romantik. Sie stellt die These auf, dass sich die Mutterbilder der Romantik aus dem 18. ins 21. Jahrhundert transferiert haben. Aus kultur- und erziehungswissenschaftlicher Perspektive blickt die Autorin zunächst auf (früh-)romantische Mutterbilder in literarischen und pädagogischen Texten, in denen das um 1800 entstehende neue Verständnis von Kindheit deutlich wird. Die weiteren Untersuchungen spannen den Bogen von der Reformpädagogik bis zur Still-Renaissance der 1970er- und 1980er-Jahre, in denen sich das Weiterwirken romantisch-natürlich orientierter Konzepte in Texten zu Geburt und Stillen manifestiert. In der spezifischen Verbindung von Mutterbildern, Romantik, Natur und Natürlichkeit zeigt Sandra Busch, wie sich die Ideen des 18. Jahrhunderts im kulturhistorischen Wandel als zentrales Deutungsmuster von Mutterschaft in der Moderne etablieren

    Abstract: Dieser Band enthält fünf Abhandlungen zur Geschichte, ethnologischen Konnotation, ästhetischen Hochbewertung, ökonomischen Veränderung und Neuentdeckung von traditioneller beziehungsweise vernakularer ruraler Architektur. Die Beiträge behandeln historische Siedlungsgebiete mit deutschsprachigen Minderheiten im ostmitteleuropäischen und osteuropäischen Raum. Es wird versucht nachzuzeichnen, auf welche Weise die historisch gebauten Bauern-, Hirten- oder Fischerhäuser ausgestattet wurden, wo und warum sie in der akademischen Bildungssphäre einen ästhetischen und repräsentativen Wert zugesprochen erhielten, wie ihre Verdrängung während der Epoche des Sozialismus vor sich ging und wann sie unter neuen wirtschaftlichen und lebensweltlichen Prämissen als temporäre oder auch dauerhafte Wohngebäude neu entdeckt wurden. Die Wiederentdeckung bzw. Neubelebung erfolgte und erfolgt aktuell unter verschiedenen Aspekten. Neben das Motiv der Erhaltung des Erbes der Minderheitenkulturen und seiner nichtmusealen Identitätspräsentation treten nun die Nachhaltigkeitseffekte der Bauweise mit lokal-/regionaltypischen Materialien und Handwerkstechniken (etwa Holzbauweise) sowie eine im Computerzeitalter neugewonnene Attraktivität des ländlich-ruhigen Wohnens in den Vordergrund.     Abstract: Seit der Kolonisierung der Karibik erschien in Frankreich eine Vielzahl an Zombie-Texten - von Kinderliteratur bis zum Zombie-Ballett. Besonders nach der Haitianischen Revolution 1791-1804 wurde mit der Figur des Zombies Wissen über den karibischen Raum produziert, das auch Vorstellungen von Europa nachhaltig prägte. Gudrun Rath untersucht erstmals diese vergessene transatlantische Geschichte der Zombie-Figur und zeigt, wie sie im Kontext von stereotypen Karibik-Darstellungen, Diskursen über Versklavung und Abolition, Todesriten und Vorstellungen von Körper und Seele nach dem Tod zum Einsatz kam - und wie sie Europa nicht nur in der Popkultur bis heute heimsucht

In 1800, Chimborazo in South America was believed to be the world's highest mountain, only succeeded by Mount Everest in 1856. Science on the Roof of the World tells the story of this shift, and the scientific, imaginative, and political remaking needed to fit the Himalaya into a new global scientific and environmental order. Lachlan Fleetwood traces untold stories of scientific measurement and collecting, indigenous labour and expertise, and frontier-making to provide the first comprehensive account of the East India Company's imperial entanglements with the Himalaya. To make the Himalaya knowable and globally comparable, he demonstrates that it was necessary to erase both dependence on indigenous networks and scientific uncertainties, offering an innovative way of understanding science's global history, and showing how geographical features like mountains can serve as scales for new histories of empire

    Abstract: Focusing on some of the most important ethnographers in early anthropology, this volume explores twelve defining works in the foundational period from 1870 to 1922. It challenges the assumption that intensive fieldwork and monographs based on it emerged only in the twentieth century.     Abstract: "This book analyses the relationship between symbolic violence, inequality and ethnicity and addresses the question of unequal integration of small ethnic groups into state structures by using the Limbus of the Northeastern Indian Borderlands as a case study. Using Pierre Bourdieu's concept of symbolic violence, the author argues that Limbus' ethnicization has been associated with the devaluation of their cultural identity, which was first constructed and naturalized by the same process of ethnicization. The book is a pioneering work in terms of application of Bourdieu's sociology to Northeast India and the theoretical interpretation of ethnic inequality in Northeast India. Moreover, the book broadens readers' overall understanding of the constant structural identity of symbolic violence and its varying manifestations.     Abstract: "This book explains how colonial legacies and the postcolonial state of Pakistan negatively influenced the socio-political and cultural dynamics and the security situation in Pakistan's Pashtun 'tribal' areas, formerly known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). It offers a local perspective on peace and conflict resolution in Pakistan's Pashtun 'tribal' region. Discussing the history and background of the former-FATA region, the role of Pashtun conflict resolution mechanism of Jirga, and the persistence of colonial-era Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) in the region, the author argues that the persistence of colonial legacies in the Pashtun 'tribal' areas, especially the FCR, coupled with the overarching influence of the military on security policy has negatively impacted the security situation in the region. By focusing on the Jirga and Jirga-based Lashkars (or Pashtun militias), the book demonstrates how Pashtuns have engaged in their own initiatives to handle the rise of militancy in their region. Moreover, the book contends that, even after the introduction of constitutional reforms and FATA's merger with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, little has changed in the region, especially regarding the treatment of 'tribal' Pashtuns as equal citizens of Pakistan. This book explains, in detail, why indigenous methods of peace and conflict resolution, such as the Jirga, could play "some" role towards long-term peace in the South Asian region. Historically and contextually informed with a focus on North-West Pakistan, this book will be of interest to academics researching South Asian Studies, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, terrorism, and traditional justice and restorative forms of peace-making."

    Abstract: Der Band befasst sich mit der Geschichte des Anthropos Instituts, das durch die Zeitschrift Anthropos und ihren Gründer Wilhelm Schmidt geprägt ist. Der erste skizziert die Geschichte des Instituts, stellt die Mitarbeiter Schmidts vor, gibt eine Insiderperspektive der Entwicklung der ethnologischen Zeitschrift und eröffnet einen neuen Blick auf Schmidts Leitidee. Der zweite Abschnitt stellt Aktivitäten des Instituts in Japan, Indien, Brasilien, Ghana und Papua-Neuguinea vor. Schließlich geben einige Mitglieder Einblicke in ihre aktuelle Arbeit. Beobachtungen eines Außenstehenden runden das Engagement des Instituts ab. Beachtenswert ist die Liste aller Mitglieder des Instituts
    Abstract: The volume contains the past and present story of Anthropos Institute, which grew around the journal Anthropos and its founder Wilhelm Schmidt. The book is divided into three sections. The first outlines the history of the Institute, presents the early co-workers of Schmidt, gives an insider’s perspective on the development of the journal and opens a new look at Schmidt’s leading concept. Section two introduces various local outreach efforts of the Institute in Japan, India, Brazil, Ghana and Papua New Guinea. Finally, some members present their current work. The collection is complemented by an outsider’s assessment of the Institute’s engagement. The Appendix includes a list of all the members of the Institute

    Abstract: "Islam and Heritage in Europe provides a critical investigation of the role of Islam in Europe's heritage. Focusing on Islam, heritage, and Europe; it seeks to productively trouble all of these terms and to throw new light on the relationships between them in various urban, national and transnational contexts. Bringing together international scholars from a range of disciplines, this volume examines heritage-making and Islam in the context of current happenings in Europe, as well as analysing past developments and future possibilities. Presenting work based on ethnographic, historical and archival research, chapters are concerned with questions of diversity, mobility, decolonisation, translocality, restitution, and belonging. By looking at diverse trajectories of people and things, this volume encompasses multiple perspectives on the relationship between Islam and heritage in Europe, including the ways in which it has played out and transformed against the backdrop of the 'refugee crisis' and other recent developments, such as debates on decolonising museums or the resurgence of nationalist sentiments. Islam and Heritage in Europe discusses specific articulations of belonging and non-belonging, and the ways in which they create new avenues for re-thinking Islam and heritage in Europe.     Abstract: Jekatyerina Dunajeva explores how two dominant stereotypes—"bad Gypsies" and "good Roma"—took hold in formal and informal educational institutions in Russia and Hungary. She shows that over centuries "Gypsies" came to be associated with criminality, lack of education, and backwardness. The second notion, of proud, empowered, and educated "Roma," is a more recent development. By identifying five historical phases—pre-modern, early-modern, early and "ripe" communism, and neomodern nation-building—the book captures crucial legacies that deepen social divisions and normalize the constructed group images. The analysis of the state-managed Roma identity project in the brief korenizatsija program for the integration of non-Russian nationalities into the Soviet civil service in the 1920s is particularly revealing, while the critique of contemporary endeavors is a valuable resource for policy makers and civic activists alike. The top-down view is complemented with the bottom-up attention to everyday Roma voices. Personal stories reveal how identities operate in daily life, as Dunajeva brings out hidden narratives and subaltern discourse. Her handling of fieldwork and self-reflexivity is a model of sensitive research with vulnerable groups

    Abstract: How colonial categories of race and religion together created identities and hierarchies that today are vehicles for multicultural nationalism and social critique in the Caribbean and its diasporas. When the British Empire abolished slavery, Caribbean sugar plantation owners faced a labor shortage. To solve the problem, they imported indentured "coolie" laborers, Hindus and a minority Muslim population from the Indian subcontinent. Indentureship continued from 1838 until its official end in 1917. The Deepest Dye begins on post-emancipation plantations in the West Indies-where Europeans, Indians, and Africans intermingled for work and worship-and ranges to present-day England, North America, and Trinidad, where colonial-era legacies endure in identities and hierarchies that still shape the post-independence Caribbean and its contemporary diasporas. Aisha Khan focuses on the contested religious practices of obeah and Hosay, which are racialized as "African" and "Indian" despite the diversity of their participants. Obeah, a catch-all Caribbean term for sub-Saharan healing and divination traditions, was associated in colonial society with magic, slave insurrection, and fraud. This led to anti-obeah laws, some of which still remain in place. Hosay developed in the West Indies from Indian commemorations of the Islamic mourning ritual of Muharram. Although it received certain legal protections, Hosay's mass gatherings, processions, and mock battles provoked fears of economic disruption and labor unrest that lead to criminalization by colonial powers. The proper observance of Hosay was debated among some historical Muslim communities and continues to be debated now.     Abstract: Venedig und sein Karneval waren in der Vormoderne für Reisende aus ganz Europa ein großer Anziehungspunkt. Nach dem Untergang der Republik 1797 verlor das Fest allerdings an Bedeutung. Erst am Ende der 1970er-Jahre kam es zu einer dauerhaften und öffentlichkeitswirksamen Wiederbelebung dieser Veranstaltung. Die vorliegende Studie rekonstruiert die Geschichte des venezianischen Karnevals und beleuchtet dabei insbesondere die jüngsten Entwicklungstendenzen. Auf der Grundlage eines mehrjährigen Beobachtungsprozesses wird die Relevanz des Festes für die Stadtbewohner thematisiert, seine touristische Vermarktung beschrieben sowie seine Inszenierung als (post)modernes Event analysiert.

    Abstract: Das westlich-moderne Konzept der (männlichen) »Homosexualität« umfasst neben der Vorstellung von der Gleichgeschlechtlichkeit der Partner auch die Annahme ihrer sozialen Gleichwertigkeit. Kulturhistorisch betrachtet ist dies allerdings eine entschiedene Ausnahme. In vielen Kulturen bildet(e) gerade die Ungleichheit - etwa hinsichtlich Alter, Stand oder Sexualverhalten - eine Bedingung, um gleichgeschlechtliche Beziehungen kulturell verhandelbar und teils sogar sozial akzeptabel zu machen. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes widmen sich diesen verschiedenen Manifestationen mann-männlichen Begehrens und verdeutlichen dabei die Eigenheiten der jeweiligen Konzepte, Praktiken und sozialen Bewertungen gleichgeschlechtlicher Beziehungen im Kulturvergleich

    Abstract: Lehrerinnen und Lehrer spielten in sämtlichen Institutionalisierungs- und Paradigmatisierungsphasen der Volkskunde als akademische Wissenschaft eine Rolle. Ihr Engagement für volkskundliche Sammlungsaktionen wird in dieser Studie genauer untersucht. Im 1951 gegründeten Archiv für westfälische Volkskunde, das heute von der Kommission Alltagskulturforschung für Westfalen des Landschaftsverbandes Westfalen-Lippe in Münster verwahrt wird, zählten Lehrerinnen und Lehrer zu den sammlungs- und forschungsfreudigsten Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern und trugen damit zur Formierung volkskundlichen Wissens bei. Anhand von Korrespondenzen dieser Berufsgruppe mit der Archivleiterin, Martha Bringemeier (1900-1991) aus den Gründungsjahren des Archivs, wird gezeigt, welche fachlichen Inhalte mit welchen sozialen Unterscheidungen korrespondierten, und wie dabei Laienaktivität und akademische Expertise immer wieder neu justiert wurden

    Abstract: Vom Wallfahrts- und Heimatmuseum zum Heimathaus Münsterland, von einem katholisch geprägten Museum zu einer der Vielfalt des Glaubens zugewandten Einrichtung, von einem dem Heimatgedanken verpflichteten volkskundlichen Museum zu einem Religionsmuseum, von bescheidenen Anfängen zu einer Institution mit regionalem Anspruch, von einem ehrenamtlich zu einem professionell geführten Museum - von all dem erzählt die Geschichte des Westfälischen Museums für Religiöse Kultur in Telgte. Zugleich geht sie darüber hinaus. Indem Rüdiger Robert den Wandel von Kultur und Gesellschaft in seine Analyse der Geschichte des Museums einbezieht, veranschaulicht er, dass Museen stets in doppeltem Sinne Orte der Geschichte sind: Zum einen spiegelt sich in ihnen der jeweilige Zustand einer Gesellschaft wider, zum anderen geben sie mit ihrer Tätigkeit Impulse zur Gestaltung und zum Verständnis von Gesellschaft. Das trifft auch für das Museum Relígio zu. Die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus wird deshalb aus der Analyse ebenso wenig ausgeblendet wie der gesellschaftliche Wandel in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland
