    Abstract: "Waverly Duck and Anne Rawls propose in this book that when "tacit" racism becomes institutionalized in the expectations of ordinary interaction-in what the authors call "Interaction Orders of Race"--it creates vast amounts of largely invisible and unconscious inequality. Because of this, interactions can produce race inequality whether the people involved are aware of it or not. The resulting divisions and exclusions divide the nation, providing fertile ground for political manipulation around issues associated with race (e.g. welfare, health care and government as the guarantor of equality). The growth of tacit and overt racism that followed the election of Barack Obama, the first African American President, ushered in a level of intolerance that most Americans thought they had left behind in the distant past. It has been a nation-wide display of how overlooking tacit racism and supporting the fiction of a "color-blind" society damages not only the least advantaged but threatens the majority; it encourages the expression of overt forms of racism that deprives society of the contributions of minorities, and it threatens democratic public spaces. As such, the authors argue, tacit racism is a clear and present danger to the survival of our nation, the public civility it depends on, the autonomy of its sciences, and its democratic institutions as a whole."

    Abstract: Warum radikalisieren sich politische Akteur*innen? Die Antworten darauf sind vielschichtig und werden nicht selten kontrovers diskutiert. Martin Wilk nutzt neuere Ansätze der Bewegungsforschung, um dieser Frage am Beispiel des US-amerikanischen »Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee« (SNCC) nachzugehen, das sich im Laufe der 1960er Jahre von einer gewaltfreien zu einer gewaltbereiten Organisation wandelte. Er zeigt auf, dass insbesondere Ansätze, die sich mit der Konstruktion kollektiver Identitäten in sozialen Bewegungen beschäftigt haben, eine wertvolle Erweiterung unseres Verständnisses von Radikalisierungsprozessen bieten.

    Abstract: Chemnitz im Herbst 2018: Proteste, aufgebrachte Bürger_innen und eine Stadt in Aufruhr. Aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven werden die Mobilisierung rechter Szenen, antisemitischer Einstellungen, Hass und Radikalisierung in sozialen Medien sowie die Erfahrungen von Betroffenen analysiert. Damit werden Einblicke in die aktuelle Forschung ermöglicht, die auch engagierte Bürger_innen adressiert.

    Abstract: Anti-racist and queer politics have tentatively converged in the activist agendas, organizing strategies and political discourses of the radical left all over the world. Pejoratively dismissed as »identity politics«, the significance of this cross-pollination of theorizing and political solidarities has yet to be fully countenanced. Even less well understood, coalitions of anti-racist and queer activisms in western Europe have fashioned durable organizations and creative interventions to combat regnant anti-Muslim and anti-migrant racism within mainstream gay and lesbian culture and institutions, just as the latter consolidates and capitalizes on their uneven inclusions into national and international orders. The essays in this volume represent a small snapshot of writers working at this point of convergence between anti-racist and queer politics and scholarship from the context of Germany. Translated for the first time into English, these four writers and texts provide a compelling introduction to what the introductory essay calls »a Berlin chapter of the Queer Intersectional«, that is, an international justice movement conducted in the key of academic analysis and political speech which takes inspiration from and seeks to synthesize the fruitful concoction of anti-racist, queer, feminist and anti-capitalist traditions, movements and theories.     Abstract: Postkoloniale Denkmuster, Nationalismus, Ethnozentrismus und Rassismus gehören in den Kontext einer Nation, die Geschichte, Kultur und Identität in einen Sinnzusammenhang bringt. Der Band zeigt: Die zunehmende kulturelle Pluralisierung der Gesellschaften erfordert die Bereitschaft zu dialogischen Begegnungen, die letztlich alle verändern. Dies nicht als Verlust, sondern als den Beginn von etwas Neuem zu erleben, scheint die Herausforderung der Zukunft zu sein. Die Beiträger_innen, darunter Kien Nghi Ha, Ram A. Mall und Bea Lundt, stellen Analysen, Deutungen und Perspektiven vor, wie erste Schritte in eine solche Zukunft aussehen könnten. Dem Band ist ein Streitgespräch mit Jörn Rüsen beigefügt, der den hier vertretenen Ansätzen kritisch begegnet

Weil die Anderen dämonisch und ungezügelt sind, so die vielleicht kürzeste Analyseformel, sind wir befugt, uns vor ihnen und unsere Vorrechte zu schützen.Die Beiträge des Bandes klären diese Verhältnisse rassismuskritisch auf und widersprechen ihnen
    Abstract: The recent media, political and everyday treatment of forced migration has made overt racism "socially acceptable" again. In this way, the discussion of "refugees" and "migrants" following the events in Cologne on New Years' Eve has increasingly taken on the tone of the demonisation of the imagined Other. As this is linked to the "tightening of the asylum act" and a European refugee politics that is increasingly isolationist, this demonisation also preserves material and symbolic relations of privilege. Because the Others are demonic and rampant, as the most concise formation of the analysis goes, we are empowered to protect ourselves from them.     Abstract: In White Innocence Gloria Wekker explores a central paradox of Dutch culture: the passionate denial of racial discrimination and colonial violence coexisting alongside aggressive racism and xenophobia. Accessing a cultural archive built over 400 years of Dutch colonial rule, Wekker fundamentally challenges Dutch racial exceptionalism by undermining the dominant narrative of the Netherlands as a "gentle" and "ethical" nation. Wekker analyzes the Dutch media's portrayal of black women and men, the failure to grasp race in the Dutch academy, contemporary conservative politics (including gay politicians espousing anti-immigrant rhetoric), and the controversy surrounding the folkloric character Black Pete, showing how the denial of racism and the expression of innocence safeguards white privilege. Wekker uncovers the postcolonial legacy of race and its role in shaping the white Dutch self, presenting the contested, persistent legacy of racism in the country

Im Rahmen einer sozialanthropologischen Forschung in »antirassistisch« und »rassistisch« wahrgenommenen Gruppen beantwortet Christa Markom diese Fragen.Zudem diskutiert sie am Beispiel von politisch und medial relevanten Schlagworten wie »Meinungsfreiheit« oder »Political Correctness« den Widerstand gegen Sprachverbote im Kontext von Rassismus, Kultur und Migration
    Abstract: What does the »center of Austrian society« think about »the migrants« and which difference-generating strategies are behind it? Which racist attitudes assumed by whom and how racism is passed on within groups?     Description / Table of Contents: This study addresses the contemporary conflict of national identity in Sudan between the adherents of Islamic nationalism and those of customary secularism. The former urge the adoption of a national constitution that derives its civil and criminal laws from the Sharia, and want Arabic as the language of instruction in national institutions. The latter demand the adoption of secular laws, derived from the set of customary laws, and equal opportunities for all African languages beside Arabic and English. In the past, the adherents of Islamic nationalism imposed the Islamic-Arab model. In reaction, secularists resorted to violence; the Islamists declared Jihad against the secularists and adopted a racial war, which has caused a humanitarian disaster. The main primary material of this research is based on a survey conducted among 500 students of five universities in Sudan. Besides, the study considers the diverse theoretical models for the formation of a nation-state, where diversity is not discouraged, but states apply laws to promote religious and ethnic diversities within one territorial state

    Abstract: This book presents ten alarmingly candid interviews by some of the most prominent members of what co-editors Carol M. Swain and Russ Nieli warn is a growing White Nationalist movement. The ten people interviewed in this volume make statements that are sure to shock, amuse, challenge, and provoke the typical reader. Their remarks are of particular interest, Swain and Nieli believe, for understanding how the many race-conscious whites who lie outside the integrationist consensus on racial issues in America view developments that have taken place in the United States since the Civil Rights movement. If current trends continue, the authors predict, these ideas will become more common, especially as whites become a diminishing portion of the US population. They claim that the claims of white nationalists need to be aired in open, public forums, where they can be vigorously challenged and subjected to refutation.

    Abstract: This 2002 book seeks to identify the motivations of individual perpetrators of ethnic violence. The work develops four models, labeled Fear, Hatred, Resentment, and Rage, gleaned from existing social science literatures. The empirical chapters apply these four models to important events of ethnic conflict in Eastern Europe, from the 1905 Russian Revolution to the collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Each historical chapter generates questions about the timing and target of ethnic violence. The four models are then applied to the case, to learn which does the best job in explaining the observed patterns of ethnic conflict. The findings challenge conventional wisdom, in that the Resentment narrative, centered on a sense of unjust group status, provides the best fit for a variety of cases. While Fear, Hatred, and Rage do motivate hostile actions, Resentment pervasively appears to inflame ethnic animosity and drive outcomes in the timing and pattern of action.

    Abstract: Why and how has race become a central aspect of politics during this century? This book addresses this pressing question by comparing South African apartheid and resistance to it, the United States Jim Crow law and protests against it, and the myth of racial democracy in Brazil. Anthony Marx argues that these divergent experiences had roots in the history of slavery, colonialism, miscegenation and culture, but were fundamentally shaped by impediments and efforts to build national unity. In South Africa and the United States, ethnic or regional conflicts among whites were resolved by unifying whites and excluding blacks, while Brazil's longer established national unity required no such legal racial crutch. Race was thus central to projects of nation-building, and nationalism shaped uses of race. Professor Marx extends this argument to explain popular protest and the current salience of issues of race.

    Abstract: In a world of increasingly heterogeneous societies, matters of identity politics and the links between collective identities and national, racial, or ethnic intolerance have assumed dramatic significance - and have stimulated an enormous body of research and literature which rarely transcends the limitations of a national perspective, however, and thus reproduces the limitations of its own topic. Comparative attempts are rare, if not altogether absent. Identity and Intolerance attempts to shift the focus toward comparison in order to show how German and American societies have historically confronted matters of national, racial, and ethnic inclusion and exclusion. This perspective sheds light on the specific links between the cultural construction of nationhood and otherness, the political modes of integration and exclusion, and the social conditions of tolerance and intolerance. The contributors also attempt to integrate the approaches offered by the history of ideas and ideologies, social history, and discourse theory.

    Abstract: In the last twenty years, immigration has become one of the most contested issues in Western Europe. The arrival of Africans, Asians, Eastern Europeans and others in Italy has reversed earlier trends of emigration. Debate, political activity and violence have raised questions of rejection and integration, of anti-racism and the new racism. Studies of these issues commonly focus on political activity and the plight of minorities, but this book breaks new ground in its emphasis on the everyday reactions of Italians to immigration and related issues. Drawing on research carried out in Palermo, Jeffrey Cole considers the role of class, culture, local history and political economy in the ambivalent responses of Sicilians to immigrants. He places Italian attitudes in a European context, and investigates why anti-immigrant politics are concentrated in the wealthy Italian North.

    Abstract: This fascinating study in the sociology of knowledge documents the refutation of scientific foundations for racism in Britain and the United States between the two World Wars, when racial differences were no longer attributed to cultural factors. Professor Barkan considers the social significance of this transformation, particularly its effect on race relations in the modern world. Discussing the work of the leading biologists and anthropologists who wrote between the wars, he argues that the impetus for the shift in ideologies came from the inclusion of outsiders (women, Jews, and leftists) who infused greater egalitarianism into scientific discourse. But even though the emerging view of race was constrained by a scientific language, he shows that modern theorists were as much influenced by social and political events as were their predecessors
