In ihnen wird versucht, neben dem Text auch eine Bildsprache einzusetzen, die als visual esperanto oder als Anhäufung von "Visiotypen" Allgemeinverständlichkeit zu garantieren scheint. Gefragt ist deshalb ein Zugang zu den Bildern, Texten und Text-Bild-Kombinationen, zu den gängigen Theorien dazu, zu den üblichen Umsetzungen der Theorien in die Praxis der genannten Medien. Schließlich wird das Verhältnis von Sprache und Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert beleuchtet.
    Abstract: Main description: Today, in a 'Visual Age' 'inundated' by images, media communication is dominated by the text-picture media (newspapers, magazines, books, posters, comics, etc.) and the picture-text media (films, TV, video clips, Internet). In these media, the attempt is made to establish a typical visual idiom alongside the text, a visual Esperanto or accumulation of 'visiotypes' designed as a guarantee of universal comprehensibility. Hence there is a need for an approach providing access to the images, texts and text-picture combinations, the theories about them in currency, and the central realizations of these theories in the praxis of the said media. The book sets out to provide such access, casting light in its later chapters on the relationship between language and art in the 20th century.

    Abstract: This book is an ethnographic study of a comprehensive school in the south of England. It explores the views of teachers, Asian parents and their children concerning education and schooling. Young people between the ages of 13 and 18 were studied at home and at school and their experiences form the main focus of the study. The experiences of fifty Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian families - mostly of Muslim faith - are studied with a view to discovering what parents expect from their children's school and how the teachers perceive their own role with regard to their students. These young people are the first generation of Asians to be educated in Britain. Their location in terms of their social class positions, gender and ethnicity are inextricably bound together. They describe how they see their past and their future. This is the first study to take account of boys andgirls in order to capture the complexity of their lived experiences

Mittels Mikroanalysen authentischer Dissenssequenzen wird nachgewiesen, daß Gesprächsteilnehmer in deutsch-dänischen Verhandlungen über nationale, kulturelle und sprachliche Unterschiede hinweg im Stande sind, selbst potenziell problematische Sequenzen zu meistern. Dies verdeutlicht, daß es einer stärkeren Differenzierung des Feldes interkulturelle Kommunikation bedarf, um der Komplexität des Untersuchungsgegenstandes gerecht zu werden.
    Abstract: Main description: The study shows that, contrary to received thinking on the point, intercultural communication is not necessarily problematic. Micro-analyses of authentic dissent sequences show that, despite their national, cultural, and linguistic differences, participants in German-Danish negotiations are capable of mastering even potentially problematic sequences. This points the necessity for a more differentiated approach to the field of intercultural communication if justice is to be done to the complexity of the subject.

    Abstract: Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2003 During the nineteenth century, American schools for deaf education regarded sign language as the "natural language" of Deaf people, using it as the principal mode of instruction and communication. These schools inadvertently became the seedbeds of an emerging Deaf community and culture. But beginning in the 1880s, an oralist movement developed that sought to suppress sign language, removing Deaf teachers and requiring deaf people to learn speech and lip reading. Historians have all assumed that in the early decades of the twentieth century oralism triumphed overwhelmingly. Susan Burch shows us that everyone has it wrong; not only did Deaf students continue to use sign language in schools, hearing teachers relied on it as well. In Signs of Resistance, Susan Burch persuasively reinterprets early twentieth century Deaf history: using community sources such as Deaf newspapers, memoirs, films, and oral (sign language) interviews, Burch shows how the Deaf community mobilized to defend sign language and Deaf teachers, in the process facilitating the formation of collective Deaf consciousness, identity and political organization

Als theoretische Grundlage der Untersuchungen verwendet er den Rational Choice-Ansatz. Braun präsentiert theoretische Modelle, die insbesondere dazu dienen, prüfbare Hypothesen über strukturelle Effekte zu generieren, also z.B. Hypothesen über die Effekte von Institutionen oder von Netzwerkeigenschaften auf das Funktionieren von Drogenmärkten und das Verhalten der Marktteilnehmer. Die Arbeit widmet sich auch der empirischen Überprüfung dieser Hypothesen mittels quantitativer Analysemethoden. Dabei verwendet der Autor Primärdaten aus eigenen Erhebungen im Drogenmilieu. Ausführlich diskutiert er die sozialtechnologischen Implikationen seiner Ergebnisse, wobei Probleme der Prohibitionspolitik im Mittelpunkt der Überlegungen stehen. The authors explore the roles of gender, race/ethnicity, and imperialism in defining national identity and shaping the past by looking at the role of local historical societies, the formation of narratives of Loyalism and the War of 1812 in school texts, and the use of historical figures in the service of twentieth-century consumer capitalism (e.g., the Secord chocolate company) and in the development of tourism." "This is a fascinating comparison of the histories of Ontario and Quebec as seen through the handling of their best-known heroines.     Abstract: The Culture of Morality examines how explanations of social and moral development inform our understandings of morality and culture. People universally develop judgments that entail deep understandings of issues of welfare, justice, and rights, and such judgments stand alongside people's conceptions of social systems and realms of personal choice. Drawing on different cultures, the author shows that people in positions of lesser power in the social hierarchy, such as women and minorities, often oppose cultural arrangements and work to subvert and transform the system. Generalizations often made regarding the cultural sources or morality in traditions and general orientations like individualism and collectivism serve to obscure the heterogeneous nature of people's judgments and interactions. Analyses of the moral and social problems faced in many societies require recognition of people's multiple moral, social, and personal goals and of the ways social arrangements provoke opposition from those treated unfairly

    Abstract: This book, originally published in 2002, argues that the Mongol invasion of the thirteenth century precipitated a transformation of marriage and property law in China that deprived women of their property rights and reduced their legal and economic autonomy. It describes how after a period during which women's property rights were steadily improving, and laws and practices affecting marriage and property were moving away from Confucian ideals, the Mongol occupation created a new constellation of property and gender relations that persisted to the end of the imperial era. It shows how the Mongol-Yüan rule in China ironically created the conditions for radical changes in the law, which for the first time brought it into line with the goals of Learning the Way Confucians and which curtailed women's financial and personal autonomy. The book evaluates the Mongol invasion and its influence on Chinese law and society

    Abstract: "In a rural community in southern Ethiopia, there are two types of rituals performed by the same people. Historical evidence suggests that one has shown remarkable stability over the years, while the other has undergone massive transformations. External factors are the same, so how is this to be explained? Dena Freeman focuses on new ethnographical and historical data from the Gamo Highlands of southern Ethiopia to tackle the question of cultural change and transformation. She uses a comparative perspective and contrasts the continuity in sacrificial rituals with the rapid divergence and differentiation in initiations
    Abstract: Freeman argues that although external change drives internal cultural transformation, the way in which it does is greatly influenced by the structural organisation of the cultural systems themselves. This insight leads to a rethinking of the analytic tension between structure and agency that is at the heart of contemporary anthropological theory."--BOOK JACKET

    Abstract: Technology, Development, and Democracy examines the growing role of the Internet in international affairs, from a source of mostly officially sanctioned information, to a venue where knowledge is often merged with political propaganda, rhetoric and innuendo. The Internet not only provides surfers with up-to-the-minute stories, including sound and visual images, and opportunities to interact with one another and experts on international issues, but also enables anyone with access to a computer, modem, and telephone line to influence international affairs directly. What does this portend for the future of international politics? The contributors respond by providing theoretical perspectives and empirical analyses for understanding the impact of the communications revolution on international security, the world political economy, human rights, and gender relations. Internet technologies are evaluated as sources of change or continuity, and as contributors to either conflict or cooperation among nations. While the Internet and its related technologies hold no greater, certain prospect for positive change than previous technological advances, they arguably do herald significant advances for democracy, the democratization process, and international peace
