Abstract: America is at a turning point: energetic debate on gay issues is now becoming a part of America's public life. Gays may no longer be invisible, but the nation's long silence on gay subjects has left a void in serious thinking about the place of gay men and lesbians in American society
Abstract: A More Perfect Union is the first book to offer a concise moral case for gay people's equal citizenship. Appealing to widely held American beliefs, Mohr grounds his argument for gay justice firmly in our most valued traditions of equality and freedom. Mohr explores gay rights from the most private to the most public: Should sex be protected by the right to privacy? What does marriage mean in today's society - and is there a case for legalizing marriage between same-sex couples
Abstract: What does equal protection under the law mean for gay people? What are we to make of the controversy over gays in the military

Abstract: "American women's relationship with their homes has always been central to their lives. In 1980 Jane Davison published a book that so brilliantly illuminated this relationship and how it had changed in this century that it immediately became a classic. That superb, timeless work is presented here in a new edition containing more than seventy-five remarkable photographs and a chapter by Lesley Davison that brings into the 1990s the lively, insightful exploration her mother began." "Drawing on such diverse and entertaining sources as family diaries, women's magazines, and popular literature, the Davisons move from the specific to the general, from personal reflection to architectural philosophy to sociological analysis, with remarkable grace." "At the turn of the century, when Jane Davison's grandmother was a young bride, a middle-class woman ruled proudly over her suburban house. Overseeing a host of children and servants, she strove to make her home a spiritual sanctuary for her family. In the thirties and forties, Davison's mother reigned over a diminished, more lonely empire. The scientific revolution of the twenties had swept into the home, innumerable appliances had taken the place of servants, and the housewife tried now to be an efficient manager. Despite these changes, home was still "a woman's happy duty." But as a housewife herself in the sixties and seventies, Jane Davison, like many women, questioned - and then rejected - the close identification of self with house. Lesley Davison examines the surprising changes in what members of a fourth generation of women think and feel about their homes." "Complemented by a rich array of photographs that reflect the changing ideals and realities of the housewife's life, this is a masterful study of the American dream of the single-family home and the economic, social, and psychological impact it has had on women."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: Underlying all the frightening headlines and shocking news stories are important questions about who we are as a society. What are our values and our aspirations? What kind of people are we? Psychotrends charts the direction of our behavior; it offers a road map to the probable destinations of humankind in the next century
Abstract: Drawing on the best current research, distinguished psychiatrist Shervert Frazier sorts through conflicting trends in six important areas to determine the fundamental nature of our society
Abstract: Are we becoming more or less violent? Are sexual relationships and communication between the sexes growing stronger or weaker? Is the family as an institution still relevant? Are we growing more selfish and individualistic or kinder and gentler? As the abortion debate continues and the debate over euthanasia grows, are we becoming more or less respectful of life itself? As a society, are we growing more or less satisfied with our lives

Abstract: In these perceptive essays, the highly regarded historian Gertrude Himmelfarb critically examines the cultural and ideological fashions of contemporary America. She analyzes the intellectual arrogance and spiritual impoverishment at the heart of such current academic movements in history, literature, and philosophy as structuralism, deconstructionism, and postmodernism - and shows how they have led to the belittling of one of the great tragedies of all time, the Holocaust. And she demonstrates the intimate, pervasive relationship between what is taught in our universities and what happens in society. She describes how the very idea of the "abyss" is made trivial and banal; how the role of the hero in history is being usurped by the writer of history; how with the end of the Cold War the greatest threat to liberalism is liberalism itself, how the link between nationalism and religion has been dangerously ignored; and how the relativization of history leads to its de-moralization and de-humanization. Provocative and incisive, Gertrude Himmelfarb's writings force us to examine our ideas about the troubling issues that concern our society and culture today.

Abstract: "What makes a family? For generations, lesbians and gay men have been left out of any idea of family and burdened by the notion that homosexuals and children can't mix. That era is over. From the thousands of parents who came out in the early 1970s to those already out as openly gay people, who in record numbers are choosing to have children, lesbians and gay men are creating what psychologist Laura Benkov calls a "cultural earthquake."" "Drawing on the stories told by parents and children themselves, as well as thorough research into case law and the psychological literature, Reinventing the Family creates a compelling portrait of those on the forefront of some of the key battles of our time. Even as debates rage over whether they should be allowed to raise children at all, lesbian and gay parents are challenging society with a host of vital questions. Can a child have two mothers? Is a sperm donor a father? Should schools include curriculum on lesbian and gay family life? As lesbians and gay men reinvent the family, we as a society must look more deeply at our ideas about family life. Same-sex couples dividing the work of parenting, for example, revises our concepts of gender and childrearing. Even an issue as seemingly simple as what a child calls a parent - or what a child's last name will be - reveals the complex relationship between language and family life." "Creating a plethora of families that don't fit existing legal definitions, lesbian and gay parents force us to examine the role of the state in defining family life. What happens to children of lesbians and gay men when parents split up or when the biological or adoptive parent dies? Is a family defined only by biological connection and heterosexual union? Eight-year-old Danielle, the daughter of lesbians and gay men, suggests an alternative definition: "people that love each other, help out, and understand each other.""
Abstract: "Like the families who are its subject, Reinventing the Family breaks new ground. A landmark book about the changing American family, it points the way to a society that honors a multiplicity of families created out of commitment, care, and love."--BOOK JACKET

To this end, he advances the notion of "poplore" as more accurately reflective of the popular and commercial roots and dynamic, syncretic traditions of American democratic culture." "In making his case, Bluestein closely examines the folk ideology of Johann Gottfried Herder, whose theories of nationalism strongly influenced American scholars from Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman to Constance Rourke and Alan Lomax. At the same time, he challenges the idea of "fakelore" popularized by Richard M. Dorson and his followers, a concept that assumes unchanging standards of what is genuinely or purely "folk."" "To illuminate the significance of "poplore" in contemporary culture, Bluestein shows how Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Jean Ritchie, and other artists have creatively adapted traditional folk materials in their work. The book also includes interviews with legendary banjo picker and singer Buell Kazee and founder of Folkways Records, Moe Asch."--Jacket

Reconsiderations , In this multidisciplinary work, John Jordan traces the significant influence on American politics of a most unlikely hero: the professional engineer. Jordan shows how technical triumphs - bridges, radio broadcasting, airplanes, automobiles, skyscrapers, and electrical power - inspired social and political reformers to borrow the language and logic of engineering in the early twentieth century, bringing terms like efficiency, technocracy, and social engineering into the political lexicon. Demonstrating that the cultural impact of technology spread far beyond the factory and laboratory, Jordan shows how a panoply of reformers embraced the language of machinery and engineering as metaphors for modern statecraft and social progress. President Herbert Hoover, himself an engineer, became the most powerful of the technocratic progressives. Elsewhere, this vision of social engineering was debated by academics, philanthropists, and commentators of the day - including John Dewey, Thorstein Veblen, Lewis Mumford, Walter Lippmann, and Charles Beard. The result, Jordan argues, was a new way of talking about the state

Abstract: "Why do white people have vaginas?" asks Maureen Reddy's two-year-old son. "Why do boys have curly hair?" These are the questions Reddy grapples with on her journey, as a white mother of black children, toward an internalized understanding of race - particularly whiteness - and of racism. Moving from memoir to race theory, to literary analysis, to interviews with friends, Reddy places this personal journey in a broad cultural context. Reddy writes as a racial "insider" who stands outside accepted racial arrangements, a position that can afford unique insight into the many contradictions of those arrangements. She addresses attempts to cross the color line that divides blacks and whites; the meeting points of whiteness and blackness; the politics of feminism and anti-racism; loving blackness; mothering black children; racism in schools; and relationships among black and white women. Our culture is permeated by color. And whether we can sort out racial divisions will, Reddy feels, determine whether we survive as a society

Abstract: Vance Packard's number-one bestsellers - Hidden Persuaders (1957), Status Seekers (1959), and Waste Makers (1960) - taught the generation of Americans that came of age in the late 1950s and early 1960s about the dangers posed by advertising, social climbing, and planned obsolescence. Like Betty Friedan and William H. Whyte, Jr., Packard (1914- ) is a journalist who played an influential role as the largely complacent 1950s gave way to the tumultuous 1960s. He is also one of the first social critics to foster and to benefit from the newly energized social and political consciousness of this period. Raised on a Pennsylvania farm, shaped by the New Deal at home and the rise of fascism abroad, and trained as a journalist, Packard turned to writing nonfiction books when he faced unemployment in 1956. In addition to his three best-known early works, his later books explore many of the forces shaping America, including invasion of privacy, changing sexual mores, the uprooting of families, and the rise of the ultra rich in the Reagan era. The titles of Packard's most famous works have become a part of our everyday vocabulary. Based in part on interviews with Packard, Daniel Horowitz's intellectual biography focuses on the period during which Packard wrote his major works of social criticism. Horowitz also traces the influence of the writer's early family life and education on his thought. Packard's life illuminates the dilemmas of a freelance social critic without inherited wealth or academic affiliation: the tension between making a living and sustaining independence; the problems posed by a dramatically fluctuating royalty income; and the impact of changing relationships with audience, publishers, intellectuals, academics, and new media such as television and the New Journalism. Packard's career also expands our understanding of how one era helped create the next, underscoring how the adversarial 1960s drew on the mass culture of the previous decade

Lewis Mumford's Alternatives to the Megamachine: Critical Utopianism, Regionalism, and Decentralization , The repeated failure of technology to fulfill its utopian promise has in recent years created disillusionment with the very idea of progress. Indeed, if technological optimism has characterized modernity, then technological pessimism may become the hallmark of the future. Nowhere has this crisis of faith been more evident than in the United States, where a series of disasters has challenged the long-standing belief that technological innovation necessarily leads to social improvement. Even the surge of renewed confidence in American technology spurred by the alleged efficacy of high-tech weapons systems during the 1991 Persian Gulf War has proved short-lived , In a series of case studies, Howard P. Segal reconsiders the American ideology of technological progress and its legacy for our contemporary high-tech world. He offers concrete examples - drawn from United States history, literature, and museums - of the role of technology in American life and the complex relationship between technological advances and social developments. In each instance, he finds technology neither wholly good nor wholly bad, but rather a mixed blessing

Note: "A Michigan State University Press publisher's circle book." , Includes bibliographical references (pages 219-233) and index , Sojourner Truth's great contributions to the nineteenth-century abolitionist debate and the struggle for woman suffrage are extraordinary in both form and content. Far from excluding her from the discourse of politics, her illiteracy provided a foundation for the development of her ideology. She also proved to be adept at turning her audiences' beliefs and laws into justifications for her own unpopular views. Truth drew on a uniquely modern and secular source of authorization and empowerment - what she called "the deeds of my body"--And she is rightfully remembered, not only for her thoughtful and systematic attacks on inequality, but also for recognizing the coming crisis in the relationship between feminist and abolitionist factions. To this day Truth's legacy challenges deep-rooted historical beliefs about cultural ownership, about the qualifications for citizenship and suffrage, and about the role played by African American women in claiming those rights , Even a brief review of the stories of Truth's life shows why it is not surprising that she is more commonly thought of as a legendary than a public figure. There is considerable evidence that Truth and those around her used and cultivated her heroic image. Contradictions in the various life stories of this nineteenth-century freedwoman are therefore no less relevant to her success and influence than the limited information we can prove by consulting records of her participation in the abolition and woman suffrage movements. Recognizing this, Erlene Stetson and Linda David have embraced the uncertainty surrounding Isabella Bomefree's history to go beyond biography. The authors have traced not only the life, but also the lifework of Sojourner Truth, providing the reader with a context for Truth's own manipulations of language and fact, as well as those of her supporters, opponents, and even "unbiased" reporters of contemporary events. Stetson and David place the various sources for information about this legendary figure within the framework of individual perspective and agenda, often providing extraordinarily disparate accounts of Truth's voice and words. They identify parallels between Truth's various and contradictory recorded experiences and those of her family, friends, and captors, as well as those expected of her by her audiences , These methodologies offer both explanations and justifications for apparent contradictions in what is known about the woman who named herself Sojourner Truth. Glorying in Tribulation offers not only an excellent perspective on Sojourner Truth, but also considerable insight into how she has become one of the most influential and best-remembered activist orators of her time. This is the story of how one woman exploited her notoriety without sacrificing her principles, even when her goals came into conflict with such powerful historical icons as William Lloyd Garrison and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. It is also the remarkable tale of how one woman was continuously able to "rewrite" her own legend in order to leave a legacy of her choosing , Speaking of shadows -- The country of the slave -- The claims of human brotherhood -- Sojourners -- I saw the wheat holding up its head -- Havest time for the black man, and seed-sowing time for woman: Nancy works in the cotton field

The vital family , What has happened to the American family in the last few decades? And what are these changes doing to our children? A renowned child psychologist and author of several influential works on child development, David Elkind has devoted his career to these urgent questions. This eloquent book - the culmination of his inquiry - puts together all the pieces, puzzling facts, and conflicting accounts, and shows us as never before what the American family has become. Today's postmodern family is under enormous stress. And as a result, the needs of hurried children have been sacrificed to the needs of their harried parents. Childhood innocence has been supplanted by the illusion of childhood competence; teenage immaturity has given way to pseudo-sophistication; and parental intuition has been traded in for a mechanical reliance on technique. These changes and a host of others have undermined the well-being of children and adolescents. , From Freud to Friedan to Foucault, Elkind traces the roots of the postmodern family back to the failure of the modern nuclear family and its supporting institutions - the media, the so-called helping professions, the legal system, and the schools - to meet the needs of parents. The new postmodern family is more flexible, more permeable, more urbane, but also out of balance because it fails to meet the needs of children. Treated like miniature adults, today's children and adolescents go without the protection and security they need, while their once-sheltered baby-boomer parents, facing new economic pressures for which they are unprepared, secretly wonder why they've never really felt like grown-ups. But all is not bleak. Elkind finds evidence of an emerging vital family that melds the best of the modern and postmodern, one in which the needs of all family members are held in a dynamic, if delicate, balance. , Many books have decried the decline in family values, the negative impact of divorce, the increase in single-mother families, and impoverished prospects for our children. But none has pulled all these fragments together as Elkind's does and put them into a solid framework, one that finally makes sense of the way we were, and what we as families may become

Abstract: Everybody who has survived adolescence knows what a scary, tumultuous, exciting time it is. But if we use memories of our experiences to guide our understanding of what today's girls are living through, we make a serious mistake. Our daughters are living in a new world. Reviving Ophelia is a call to arms from Dr. Mary Pipher, a psychologist who has worked with teenagers for more than a decade. She finds that in spite of the women's movement, which has empowered adult women in some ways, teenage girls today are having a harder time than ever before because of higher levels of violence and sexism. The current crises of adolescence - frequent suicide attempts, dropping out of school and running away from home, teenage pregnancies in unprecedented numbers, and an epidemic of eating disorders - are caused not so much by "dysfunctional families" or incorrect messages from parents as by our media-saturated, lookist, girl-destroying culture
Abstract: Young teenagers are not developmentally equipped to meet the challenges that confront them. Adolescence in America has traditionally involved breaking away from parents, experimenting with the trappings of adult life, and searching for autonomy and independence. Today's teenagers face serious pressures at an earlier age than that at which teenagers in the past did. The innocent act of attending an unsupervised party can lead to acquaintance rape. Having a boyfriend means dealing with sexual pressures, and often leads to pregnancy and/or sexually transmitted diseases. It's no wonder that girls' math scores plummet and depression levels rise when they reach junior high. As they encounter situations that are simply too complex for them to handle, their self-esteem crumbles. The dangers young women face today can jeopardize their futures. It is critical that we understand the circumstances and take measures to correct them
Abstract: We need to make that precious age of experimentation safe for adolescent girls. Reading Reviving Ophelia is the first step to doing so. Dr. Pipher offers not only a fresh and startling view of the problems but a clear and sane way to implement solutions

Abstract: In twentieth-century industrial societies most of us live longer and healthier lives than ever before in history. Yet the social structures and institutions that provide opportunities for our lives are still marked by age constraints that were appropriate a century ago. Education is still primarily reserved for the young; work and family responsibilities are crowded into the middle years; while leisure and free time are allocated to the added decades of retirement. Even the many vital men and women past age 65, or even 55, who want or need paid jobs are regarded as "too old" to work. Lives have changed, but social structures have not caught up. There is a lag or mismatch between lives and structures
Abstract: What are the detrimental consequences of this structural lag for individuals and society at large? How do structures change, and how can they be changed to enhance lives at every age? What alternative structures would lessen the burdens of middle age, prepare children for the complexities of the real world, and provide opportunities for productivity, independence, and esteem for older people? Seeking answers to such questions, the twelve chapters in this book bring powerful insights to bear on structural lag from sociology and psychology; and they draw upon history, anthropology, and economics to disclose new perspectives on the past and the present, and new hope for the future. While special attention is paid to structures affecting the old, issues relating to all ages are explored in respect to work, family, education, retirement, and other domains of social life
Abstract: This is a powerful book, revolutionary in its conceptions and implications, calling for structural changes in society; a new mix of work, family, and leisure. Opening a critical but neglected area, it is the first book publication of a long-range Program on Age and Structural Change (PASC) directed by Matilda White Riley at the National Institute on Aging and involving an international network of scholars. Timely, authoritative, and the only book to offer a comprehensive treatment of this increasingly important social problem, Age and Structural Lag is a valuable resource for psychologists, sociologists, and those interested in human development and aging; for those in professional practice and in policy, both public and private; and for sophisticated readers concerned with major issues of everyday life

Abstract: Is antisemitism on the rise in America? A glance at the daily newspapers suggests a resurgence of animosity yet Leonard Dinnerstein, in this provocative and in-depth study, categorically states that there is less bigotry in this country than ever before. He also argues in this provocative analysis that Jews have never been more at home in America. What we are seeing today, he writes, is media hype. A long tradition of prejudice, suspicion, and hatred against the Jews, the direct product of Christian teachings, has, in fact, finally begun to wane. In Antisemitism in America, Dinnerstein provides a landmark work - the first comprehensive history of prejudice against Jews in the United States, ranging from its foundations in European Christian culture to the present day
Abstract: Dinnerstein's richly detailed and thoroughly documented book reveals how Christians carried their religious prejudices with them to the New World and how they manifested themselves, albeit in muted form, in the colonial wilderness and in the developing American society thereafter. Jews could not vote, for example, in Rhode Island or New Hampshire until 1842, and in North Carolina until 1868. The Civil War witnessed the first major wave of publicly displayed American antisemitism as individuals in both the North and the South assumed that Jews sided with the enemy. The decades that followed marked the emergence of a full-fledged antisemitic society as Christians excluded Jews from their social circles and wove fantasies for themselves as they pictured what "Jews were really like." Antisemitic fervor mixed with racism at the beginning of the twentieth century, accelerated by the views of eugenicists, fears of Bolshevism, and the rantings of Henry Ford
Abstract: During the Depression hostility toward Jews accelerated as Americans vented their frustrations upon minorities because of the economic crises of the decade. Christians of all stripes called upon Jews to accept the divinity of Jesus Christ, and Father Charles Coughlin emerged as one of the most beloved priests in all of American history as he excoriated Jews and sympathized with Nazis over the airwaves and in his journal, Social Justice. Ironically, Dinnerstein writes, as Americans fought in World War II to make the world safe for democracy, public opinion polls noted a huge increase in American animosity toward Jews. Not until after the war ended did this enmity subside. While fresh economic opportunities and, heightened sensitivities to the effects of bigotry resulted in the decline of all prejudices in this country, including antisemitism, it nevertheless still cropped up in the highest ranks of government. especially during Richard Nixon's presidency

It shows how the black middle class is both a shaper and a mirror and indeed a key force in the "Africanizing" of American culture. In the past three decades the fruits of integration have been at once sweet and bitter. This study of the era explores both the progress and the setbacks and shows how the achievements of African Americans in entering the nation's mainstream have been propelled by the culture and the ideology of the black middle class. In late twentieth-century America the black middle class has occupied a unique position. It greatly influenced the way African Americans were perceived and presented to the greater society, and it set roles and guidelines for the nation's black masses. Though historically a small group, it has attempted to be a model for inspiration and uplift. In the struggle for equality and the fight against racism pervasive in American society, its own members have wrestled with their own vision of racial identity and solidarity. Here is a concept of "integrative cultural diversity" that affirms the importance of the African-American presence to the nation's culture and advocates cultural diversity as a movement away from racism and towards an America that is a humane and comfortable society for all. In examining the growth of the black middle class and its responses to political and social realities in the decades since 1960, The Fruits of Integration acknowledges the burgeoning of a bitter and despairing underclass and its desperate separatism. Yet this book focuses on the role of the expanded middle class struggling as never before to provide a vision of harmony for all Americans

Abstract: In this age of information, sponsored studies have become America's most powerful and popular tool of persuasion. However, in Tainted Truth, we find out that much of what we learn from them is false. Although the studies and surveys wear the guise of objective science, their findings almost invariably reflect their sponsors' intentions. Most such research is designed with a certain outcome in mind, and it is all but guaranteed to achieve that outcome. The result is a compilation of information - the information used every day by voters, consumers and leaders. Manufactured truths dominate the American discourse in Congress, courtrooms, offices, newspapers, magazines and television. Studies have become the vehicle for polishing corporate images, influencing juries, shaping debate on public policy, selling commercial products and satisfying the media's - and the public's - voracious appetite for information. In this blistering expose, Cynthia Crossen shows how deeply this research world has been pervaded by artfully crafted deception - and how it affects us all. Crossen reveals how the manufacturers of silicone breast implants did not disclose information regarding the dangers of the implants; how the demise of the cloth-diaper industry was influenced by questionable statistics published by Procter & Gamble - the leading supplier of disposable diapers; how supermarkets across the country emptied their shelves of apples because of the Alar scare, initiated by highly disputed research from a publicity hungry environmental group; and how even the confirmation of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court was influenced by fast and biased polls. As information continues to lose its link to truth, we are all losing our ability to make informed decisions. Tainted Truth is an enormously important and provocative book that will change the way we make our decisions - decisions that have endangered our minds and, in some cases, our lives.

Abstract: In recent years the implications of "multiculturalism" for American society have been the subject of much debate. To some, the term has come to denote the fragmentation of tradition and the coherent values that derive from it. To others, it signals the advent of a more inclusive, tolerant, and genuinely democratic society. Drawing on philosophy's longstanding concern with issues of pluralism and relativism, on the traditions of American pragmatism, and on modern theoretical innovations, the essays in this volume bring clarity to this discussion by analyzing the underlying values and assumptions of each side. They present a varied, insightful, and well-reasoned defense of the virtues of diversity, outside as well as inside the walls of the academy.

Abstract: Gloria Steinem is one of the country's most influential and innovative writers and activists. In Revolution from Within, Marilyn: Norma Jean, and Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, she created a dialogue with her readers that shapes the way we think about human possibilities. In this newest six-part adventure of essays that "begin in a personal place, and arrive at a larger point," she offers more revolutionary ideas, compassionate insights, and one truly over-the-top fantasy
Abstract: Three of its six parts appear here for the first time. Three of them have a seed, seedling, or partly grown plant in a previously published article. As Steinem writes in the Preface, "Each of these six parts is rather like a condensed book....Since there seems to be no genre for this, I've found myself explaining it this way: If you added water to any of these parts, it would become a book.
Abstract: . What If Freud Were Phyllis is the ultimate send-up - with footnotes. By gender-reversing Sigmund's world and work, and drawing on new scholarship that shocks, Steinem creates a hilarious and chilling portrait of the most haunting father-figure of them all - and raises questions about what might have been haunting him, and why he is still haunting us

Abstract: In The Girl's Own Claudia Nelson and Lynne Vallone bring together eleven essays that explore British and American Victorian representations of the adolescent girl. The variety of contemporary sources on which the essays draw includes conduct books, housekeeping manuals, periodicals, biographies, photographs, paintings, and educational treatises. The institutions, practices, and literatures discussed in this volume reveal the ways in which the Girl expressed her independence, as well as the ways in which she was presented and controlled. As many of the contributors note, nineteenth-century visions of girlhood in both Britain and the United States were extremely ambiguous. The adolescent girl was a figure both fascinating and troubling to Victorian commentators, who often debated her place in society
Abstract: In the controversy over female sexuality and behavior she played an especially significant role, because she embodied the potential for either virtuous attention to duty - as wife/mother or spinster/sister - or depraved independence and sexual freedom. Unlike other examinations of Victorian girlhood, this collection is particularly distinguished by its combination of literary and cultural history in its discussion of both British and American texts and practices. Among the topics addressed are the nineteenth-century attempt to link morality and diet; the making of heroines in biographies for girls; Lewis Carroll's and John Millais's iconographies of girlhood in, respectively, their photographs and paintings; genre fiction for and by girls; and the effort to reincorporate teenage unwed mothers into the domestic life of Victorian America
Abstract: Together these essays follow the adolescent girl from her domestic life as housekeeper and as consumer of didactic literature, through her canonization or condemnation by nineteenth-century society, to her forays into the public sphere of school or employment, and finally back "home" again, as turn-of-the-century social activists tried to come to terms with girls who refused to act according to Victorian values. Ultimately, neither actual nor fictional girls appear content to be categorized as the reassuringly meek and ornamental beings their society desired

Abstract: For nearly a century, the discourse on ethnoracial minorities in the United States has been framed by debates over assimilation versus pluralism. In this challenging look at race, culture, and the nature of integration, Stanford Lyman explores that discourse, from its philosophical origins in intellectual responses to the "Jewish Question" to its contemporary formulations. Lyman's subjects range from Robert E. Park's shifting views on the relation between assimilation and civilizational advance through the imagery of ethnic groups found in novels, slave narratives, and film; the challenge to ethnohistorical views represented by the Chinese diaspora; and the "badge of slavery" that Asian, Hispanic, and Native American groups have been forced to wear. Finally, Lyman reflects on the innovative ways of speaking, writing, and acting forged by the revival of race consciousness and offers a perspective on how to understand more constructively the major African-American literary and social critics.
