    Abstract: As we face new global challenges - from climate change to the international political order - the need to re-examine the historical roots of cosmopolitanism and liberal principles on a global scale has become increasingly central to the political conversation. Cosmopolitanism and the Enlightenment brings together leading scholars in cultural history, the history of ideas and global politics in order to reassess the complexity of cosmopolitanism during the Enlightenment and its various interpretations over time. Through a fresh and revisionist perspective, the volume explores issues of universalism and cultural diversity, the idea of civilization, race, gender, empire, colonialism, global inequality, national patriotism, international and civil conflict, and other forms of political discourse, challenging the simple negative stereotype that the Enlightenment was inevitably hierarchical and Eurocentric. This timely intervention into the debate about the legacy of the Enlightenment highlights both the plurality and the continuing relevance of Enlightened cosmopolitanism to contemporary global concerns

    Abstract: Our conception of the culture and values of the ancient Greco-Roman world is largely based on texts and material evidence left behind by a small and atypical group of city-dwellers. The people of the deep Mediterranean countryside seldom appear in the historical record from antiquity, and almost never as historical actors. This book is the first extended historical ethnography of an ancient village society, based on an extraordinarily rich body of funerary and propitiatory inscriptions from a remote upland region of Roman Asia Minor. Rural kinship structures and household forms are analysed in detail, as are the region's demography, religious life, gender relations, class structure, normative standards and values. Roman north-east Lydia is perhaps the only non-urban society in the Greco-Roman world whose culture can be described at so fine-grained a level of detail: a world of tight-knit families, egalitarian values, hard agricultural labour, village solidarity, honour, piety and love

    Abstract: This volume offers new insights into the radical shift in attitudes towards death and the dead body that occurred in temperate Bronze Age Europe. Exploring the introduction and eventual dominance of cremation, Marie-Louise Stig Sørenson and Katharina Rebay-Salisbury apply a case-study approach to investigate how this transformation unfolded within local communities located throughout central to northern Europe. They demonstrate the deep link between the living and the dead body, and propose that the introduction of cremation was a significant ontological challenge to traditional ideas about death. In tracing the responses to this challenge, the authors focus on three fields of action: the treatment of the dead body, the construction of a burial place, and ongoing relationships with the dead body after burial. Interrogating cultural change at its most fundamental level, the authors elucidate the fundamental tension between openness towards the 'new' and the conservative pull of the familiar and traditional

    Abstract: Economic arguments favoring increased immigration restrictions suggest that immigrants undermine the culture, institutions, and productivity of destination countries. But is this actually true? Nowrasteh and Powell systematically analyze cross-country evidence of potential negative effects caused by immigration relating to economic freedom, corruption, culture, and terrorism. They analyze case studies of mass immigration to the United States, Israel, and Jordan. Their evidence does not support the idea that immigration destroys the institutions responsible for prosperity in the modern world. This nonideological volume makes a qualified case for free immigration and the accompanying prosperity.

    Abstract: Exhibitions of Islamic artefacts in European museums have since 1989 been surrounded by a growing rhetoric of cultural tolerance, in response to the dissemination of images of Islam as misogynist, homophobic and violent. This has produced a new public context for exhibitions of Islam and has led to major recent investments in new galleries for Islamic artefacts, often with financial support from the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. This Element addresses contemporary framings of Islam in European museums, focusing on how museums in Germany and the UK with collections of Islamic heritage realise the ICOM (International Council of Museums) definition of museums as institutions in the service of society. The authors find that far too often the knowledge of Islamic cultural heritage is disconnected from contemporary developments in museum transformations, as well as from the geopolitical contexts they are a response to

    Abstract: American political observers express increasing concern about affective polarization, i.e., partisans' resentment toward political opponents. We advance debates about America's partisan divisions by comparing affective polarization in the US over the past 25 years with affective polarization in 19 other western publics. We conclude that American affective polarization is not extreme in comparative perspective, although Americans' dislike of partisan opponents has increased more rapidly since the mid-1990s than in most other Western publics. We then show that affective polarization is more intense when unemployment and inequality are high; when political elites clash over cultural issues such as immigration and national identity; and in countries with majoritarian electoral institutions. Our findings situate American partisan resentment and hostility in comparative perspective, and illuminate correlates of affective polarization that are difficult to detect when examining the American case in isolation

    Abstract: This interdisciplinary study explores how classical ideals of generosity influenced the writing and practice of gift giving in medieval Europe. In assuming that medieval gift giving was shaped by oral 'folk models', historians have traditionally followed in the footsteps of social anthropologists and sociologists such as Marcel Mauss and Pierre Bourdieu. This first in-depth investigation into the influence of the classical ideals of generosity and gift giving in medieval Europe reveals to the contrary how historians have underestimated the impact of classical literature and philosophy on medieval culture and ritual. Focusing on the idea of the gift expounded in the classical texts read most widely in the Middle Ages, including Seneca the Younger's De beneficiis and Cicero's De officiis, Lars Kjær investigates how these ideas were received, adapted and utilised by medieval writers across a range of genres, and how they influenced the practice of generosity

    Abstract: When the Chinese communists came to power in 1949, they promised to 'turn society upside down'. Efforts to build a communist society created hopes and dreams, coupled with fear and disillusionment. The Chinese people made great efforts towards modernization and social change in this period of transition, but they also experienced traumatic setbacks. Covering the period 1949 to 1976 and then tracing the legacy of the Mao era through the 1980s, Felix Wemheuer focuses on questions of class, gender, ethnicity, and the urban-rural divide in this new social history of Maoist China. He analyzes the experiences of a range of social groups under Communist rule - workers, peasants, local cadres, intellectuals, 'ethnic minorities', the old elites, men and women. To understand this tumultuous period, he argues, we must recognize the many complex challenges facing the People's Republic. But we must not lose sight of the human suffering and political terror that, for many now ageing quietly across China, remain the period's abiding memory.

    Abstract: In The Invention of Race in the European Middle Ages, Geraldine Heng questions the common assumption that the concepts of race and racisms only began in the modern era. Examining Europe's encounters with Jews, Muslims, Africans, Native Americans, Mongols, and the Romani ('Gypsies'), from the 12th through 15th centuries, she shows how racial thinking, racial law, racial practices, and racial phenomena existed in medieval Europe before a recognizable vocabulary of race emerged in the West. Analysing sources in a variety of media, including stories, maps, statuary, illustrations, architectural features, history, saints' lives, religious commentary, laws, political and social institutions, and literature, she argues that religion - so much in play again today - enabled the positing of fundamental differences among humans that created strategic essentialisms to mark off human groups and populations for racialized treatment. Her ground-breaking study also shows how race figured in the emergence of homo europaeus and the identity of Western Europe in this time.

    Abstract: This innovative study of poverty in Independent Ireland between 1920 and 1940 is the first to place the poor at its core by exploring their own words and letters. Written to the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, their correspondence represents one of the few traces in history of Irish experiences of poverty, and collectively they illuminate the lives of so many during the foundation decades of the Irish state. This book keeps the human element central, so often lost when the framework of history is policy, institutions and legislation. It explores how ideas of charity, faith, gender, character and social status were deployed in these poverty narratives and examines the impact of poverty on the lives of these writers and the survival strategies they employed.     Abstract: Antisemitic stereotypes of Jews as capitalists have hindered research into the economic dimension of the Jewish past. The figure of the Jew as trader and financier dominated the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But the economy has been central to Jewish life and the Jewish image in the world; Jews not only made money but spent money. This book is the first to investigate the intersection between consumption, identity, and Jewish history in Europe. It aims to examine the role and place of consumption within Jewish society and the ways consumerism generated and reinforced Jewish notions of belonging from the end of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the new millennium. It shows how the advances of modernization and secularization in the modern period increased the importance of consumption in Jewish life, making it a significant factor in the process of redefining Jewish identity.

    Abstract: The market for print steadily expanded throughout the eighteenth-century Atlantic world thanks to printers' efforts  to ensure that ordinary people knew how to read and use printed matter. Reading is and was a collection of practices, performed in diverse, but always very specific ways. These practices were spread down the social hierarchy through printed guides. Eve Tavor Bannet explores guides to six manners or methods of reading, each with its own social, economic, commercial, intellectual and pedagogical functions, and each promoting a variety of fragmentary and discontinuous reading practices. The increasingly widespread production of periodicals, pamphlets, prefaces, conduct books, conversation-pieces and fictions, together with schoolbooks designed for adults and children, disseminated all that people of all ages and ranks might need or wish to know about reading, and prepared them for new jobs and roles both in Britain and America.

    Abstract: Giants, cannibals and other monsters were a regular feature of Renaissance illustrated maps, inhabiting the Americas alongside other indigenous peoples. In a new approach to views of distant peoples, Surekha Davies analyzes this archive alongside prints, costume books and geographical writing. Using sources from Iberia, France, the German lands, the Low Countries, Italy and England, Davies argues that mapmakers and viewers saw these maps as careful syntheses that enabled viewers to compare different peoples. In an age when scholars, missionaries, native peoples and colonial officials debated whether New World inhabitants could – or should – be converted or enslaved, maps were uniquely suited for assessing the impact of environment on bodies and temperaments. Through innovative interdisciplinary methods connecting the European Renaissance to the Atlantic world, Davies uses new sources and questions to explore science as a visual pursuit, revealing how debates about the relationship between humans and monstrous peoples challenged colonial expansion.

To articulate this troubling claim, Steven Johnston explores the cruelty of democratic founding, the brutal use democracies make of citizens and animals during wartime, the ambiguous consequences of legislative action expressive of majority rule, and militant practices of citizenship required to deal with democracy's enemies.     Abstract: Imperial Russia's Muslims offers an exploration of social and cultural change among the Muslim communities of Central Eurasia from the late eighteenth century through to the outbreak of the First World War. Drawing from a wealth of Russian and Turkic sources, Mustafa Tuna surveys the roles of Islam, social networks, state interventions, infrastructural changes and the globalization of European modernity in transforming imperial Russia's oldest Muslim community: the Volga-Ural Muslims. Shifting between local, imperial and transregional frameworks, Tuna reveals how the Russian state sought to manage Muslim communities, the ways in which both the state and Muslim society were transformed by European modernity, and the extent to which the long nineteenth century either fused Russia's Muslims and the tsarist state or drew them apart. The book raises questions about imperial governance, diversity, minorities, and Islamic reform, and in doing so proposes a new theoretical model for the study of imperial situations

    Abstract: Bilingualism has given rise to significant changes in Spanish-speaking countries. In the US, the increasing importance of Spanish has engendered an English-only movement; in Peru, contact between Spanish and Quechua has brought about language change; and in Iberia, speakers of Basque, Galician and Catalan have made their languages a compulsory part of school curricula and local government. This book provides an introduction to bilingualism in the Spanish-speaking world, looking at topics such as language contact, bilingual societies, bilingualism in schools, code-switching, language transfer, the emergence of new varieties of Spanish, and language choice - and how all of these phenomena affect the linguistic and cognitive development of the speaker. Using examples and case studies drawn primarily from Spanish/English bilinguals in the US, Spanish/Quechua bilinguals in Peru and Spanish/Basque bilinguals in Spain, it provides diverse perspectives on the experience of being bilingual in distinct cultural, political and socioeconomic contexts

    Abstract: This interdisciplinary study presents compelling evidence for a revolutionary idea: that to understand the historical entrenchment of gentility in America, we must understand its creation among non-elite people: colonial middling sorts who laid the groundwork for the later American middle class. Focusing on the daily life of Widow Elizabeth Pratt, a shopkeeper from early eighteenth-century Newport, Rhode Island, Christina J. Hodge uses material remains as a means of reconstructing not only how Mrs Pratt lived, but also how these objects reflect shifting class and gender relationships in this period. Challenging the 'emulation thesis', a common assumption that wealthy elites led fashion and culture change while middling sorts only followed, Hodge shows how middling consumers were in fact discerning cultural leaders, adopting genteel material practices early and aggressively. By focusing on the rise and emergence of the middle class, this book brings new insights into the evolution of consumerism, class, and identity in colonial America

    Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

    Abstract: This collection of essays offers a novel approach to the cultural and social history of Europe after the Second World War. In a shift of perspective, it does not conceive of the impressive economic and political stability of the postwar era as a quasi-natural return to previous patterns of societal development but approaches it as an attempt to establish 'normality' upon the lingering memories of experiencing violence on a hitherto unprecedented scale. It views the relationship of the violence of the 1940s to the apparent 'normality' and stability of the 1950s as a key to understanding the history of post-war Europe. While the history of post-war Germany naturally looms large in this collection, the essays deal with countries across Western and Central Europe, offer comparative perspectives on their subjects, and draw upon a wide range of primary and secondary source material

    Abstract: Across Iron Age Europe the human head carried symbolic associations with power, fertility status, gender, and more. Evidence for the removal, curation and display of heads ranges from classical literary references to iconography and skeletal remains. Traditionally, this material has been associated with a Europe-wide 'head-cult', and used to support the idea of a unified Celtic culture in prehistory. This book demonstrates instead how headhunting and head-veneration were practised across a range of diverse and fragmented Iron Age societies. His research also provides a reconsideration of the legacy of medieval Jewish life, which is often depicted as equally destructive and projected as the underpinning of the twentieth-century catastrophes of antisemitism and the Holocaust. Dr Chazan's research proves that, although Jewish life in the medieval West laid the foundation for much Jewish suffering in the post-medieval world, it also stimulated considerable Jewish ingenuity, which lies at the root of impressive Jewish successes in the modern West.

In this thoughtful and provocative book, Elizabeth Theiss-Morse develops a social theory of national identity and uses a national survey, focus groups, and experiments to answer these important questions in the American context. Her results show that the combination of group commitment and the setting of exclusive boundaries on the national group affects how people behave toward their fellow Americans. Strong identifiers care a great deal about their national group. They want to help and to be loyal to their fellow Americans. By limiting who counts as an American, though, these strong identifiers place serious limits on who benefits from their pro-group behavior. Help and loyalty are offered only to 'true Americans,' not Americans who do not count and who are pushed to the periphery of the national group

    Abstract: Abstract: "Der in Deutschland seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre institutionalisierte umweltsoziologische Diskurs ist geprägt vom Topos der aus der Soziologie ausgegrenzten Natur. Der Soziologie wird vorgeworfen, mit der Perspektive auf die soziale Realität die andere Realität der Natur aus dem Blick verloren zu haben. Seither testet die Umweltsoziologie verschiedene soziologische Theorieprogramme daraufhin, ob in ihnen Natur eine Rolle spielt oder nicht. Niklas Luhmanns Systemtheorie hat in diesem Test besonders schlecht abgeschnitten. Der systemtheoretische Umweltbegriff, so der Vorwurf, blende den ökologischen und physischen Umweltbegriff völlig aus. Diese Kritik an Luhmann hat dazu geführt, dass eine systematische Auseinandersetzung mit dem umweltsoziologischen Potenzial der Systemtheorie Desiderat geblieben ist.     Abstract: Abstract: "Die europäische Integration ist nicht mehr allein ein politischer, sondern der Intention nach zunehmend auch ein gesellschaftlicher Prozess. Dies setzt die Frage nach einem europäischen Wahrnehmungsraum auf die wissenschaftliche Agenda. Interesse an einander wäre eine Vorbedingung für Gesellschaftsbildung. In der Zeitungsberichterstattung müsste sich das Interesse an Ereignissen auch in seiner räumlichen Ausdehnung zeigen. Dies trifft besonders auf Lokalberichterstattung zu, denn Lokalnachrichten werden vor allem aufgrund von Relevanz und Nähe ausgewählt. Der Vortrag untersucht, in welchem Maße die Staatsgrenze Einfluss hat auf die Lokalberichterstattung von deutschen Zeitungen, die grenznah erscheinen. Dazu wurde für deutsche, grenznah erscheinende Regionalzeitungen erhoben, in welcher Häufigkeit aus Orten diesseits und jenseits der Staatsgrenze berichtet wird. Es zeigt sich, dass Ereignisse aus dem angrenzenden Ausland mit deutlich geringerer Wahrscheinlichkeit berichtet werden

    Abstract: Abstract: Die Ad-hoc Gruppe "Heidegger und die Soziologie" vom Leipziger Kongress der DGS 2002 griff die Debatte auf, die mit dem Buch "Jemeinigkeit des Mitseins. Die Daseinanalytik Martin Heideggers und die Kritik der soziologischen Vernunft" (Hrsg. J. Weiß) eröffnet wurde, und widmete sich der Daseinanalytik Heideggers als Form und Medium der soziologischen Selbstreflexion. Beim Kasseler Soziologiekongress 2006 befasst sich die Ad-hoc Gruppe nun mit der konkreten Fragestellung, ob das Dasein des Menschen und die Vielfalt menschlicher Existenzweisen sich ausschließlich auf das gesellschaftliche Sein reduzieren lassen.     Abstract: Abstract: "Die Etablierung der Soziologie als eigenständige wissenschaftliche Disziplin verdankt sich nicht zuletzt der Entwicklung von Theorien sozialen Handelns, die das Individuum in den Mittelpunkt rücken, um gesellschaftliche Phänomene zu erklären. Nicht nur die Soziologie, sondern auch die Handlungstheorie beruht auf Grundideen der Aufklärung und ist damit letztlich ein Produkt der Moderne. Die Vorstellung eines Individuums, das als freier und eigenverantwortlicher Handlungsträger losgelöst von Tradition und Gemeinschaft rational kalkulierend agiert, wäre für vormoderne Zeiten ebenso undenkbar, wie die Idee der gestaltenden Handlungsfähigkeit der selbstbestimmt koordinierten Individuen. Bei aller Kritik die dem homo oeconomicus und dem demokratisch gelenkten Staat immer wieder entgegengebracht wurde, ist doch beides zumindest als Idealtypus nicht aus der Geschichte der Neuzeit wegzudenken.     Abstract: Abstract: "In jüngerer Zeit wurde - etwa von Karin Knorr Cetina - in der Soziologie die These der Entstehung einer post-sozialen Gesellschaft diskutiert. Post-Sozialität meint hierbei eine gesellschaftliche Entwicklung, die zum einen durch eine fortschreitende 'Entleerung des Sozialen' (Knorr 2001) und zum anderen - und damit verbunden - durch eine zunehmende 'Expansion von Objekt-zentrierten Umwelten' (Knorr 1998) und eine zunehmende Relevanz von nicht-sozialen Dingen und Wissensobjekten gekennzeichnet ist.     Abstract: Abstract: Viele Vorläufer des soziologischen Denkens waren mit der Mathematik und den Naturwissenschaften vertraut. Sie waren für die Klassiker ein Maßstab und ein Modell für die noch junge Soziologie. Der wohl folgenreichste Bezug zur Biologie stellte Niklas Luhmanns Theorie der Selbstreferenz sozialer Systeme dar. Der Beitrag diskutiert die Verbindungen zwischen naturwissenschaftlichem Denken und Gesellschaftstheorie. Dies hat zur Konsequenz, dass abstrakte Kategorien wie "Systeme", "Anpassung", "Zielerreichung" u. ä. ihres sozialen, historischen und politischen Sinns beraubt werden. Die Frage, welche Ziele mit welchen Mitteln anzustreben sind, ist ebenso eine originär politische wie die, an welche Rahmenbedingungen sich ein System anpassen soll. Es ist zugleich erstaunlich, wenn Naturwissenschaftler auf massenmedialer Bühne die Welt erklären. Spätestens hier zeigt sich, dass disziplinäre Selbstbeschränkung angebracht wäre.     Abstract: Abstract: "Die spätmoderne Geschlechterordnung ist durch Widersprüche zwischen Re-Naturalisierungs- und Vergesellschaftungsprozessen von Geschlecht gekennzeichnet: Re-naturalisierende Zuschreibungen an die Geschlechter, z.B. hinsichtlich der (mit den generativen Funktionen begründeten) Arbeitsteilung, gehen Hand in Hand mit sozialen Dekonstruktionsprozessen, in denen Geschlecht und Generativität ihrer vorgeblichen Natürlichkeit entledigt und als durch und durch vergesellschaftet verstanden werden. Hier zeichnet sich eine Gleichzeitigkeit von Stabilität und Wandel in den Reproduktionsprozessen von Geschlecht ab.     Abstract: Abstract: "Aktuelle soziologische Theorieentwicklungen lassen sich zunehmend unter dem Aspekt der Erosion eines systematischen Gesellschaftsbegriffs beobachten. Vorstellungen einer Totalität der Gesellschaft werden nicht nur infrage gestellt, sondern rücken spätestens in den neunziger Jahren zugunsten von Theorien in den Hintergrund, die entweder 'Gesellschaft' auf Konstruktionen von Individuen, auf subjektive Erfahrungen und mikrosoziale Interaktionen zurückführen oder diese aufgrund zunehmender Entgrenzungserscheinungen nicht mehr als ein, wenn auch zum Teil widersprüchliches und dynamisches, zusammenhängendes Ganzes betrachten. Diese Prozesse gehen soweit, dass man in postmodernen soziologischen Theorien sogar vom Ende des Sozialen (Baudrillard) spricht.     Abstract: Abstract: "Das hier vorgestellte Forschungsprojekt untersucht vor dem Hintergrund der Europäisierung mit einer qualitativen empirischen Studie die Migration von deutschen Facharbeitern innerhalb der EU. Untersuchungsgruppe ist damit eine neue und zahlenmäßig wichtiger werdende Migrationsgruppe im europäischen Migrationsraum. Soziologische Forschungsergebnisse liegen dazu bisher kaum vor. Zentrale Ziele der Untersuchung sind die Erforschung der Migrationsgründe und der sozialen Netzwerke. Um diese Aspekte zu erfassen, wird eine Mehrfachbefragung ab August 2006 realisiert, mittels der die Migranten sowohl vor wie auch nach dem eigentlichen Migrationsereignis interviewt werden (insgesamt 70 berufsbiografische Interviews). Dieses Design ermöglicht, den Migrationsverlauf sehr detailliert nachzuvollziehen.     Abstract: Abstract: "Der Natur der Gesellschaft liegt par excellence in ihrer sexuellen Reproduktion, d.h. in ihrer Bevölkerungsweise. Doch die Art und Weise, wie die Soziologie und die Öffentlichkeit das Verhältnis von Gesellschaft und Bevölkerung sieht, wechselt unvermittelt zwischen zwei Extremen. Entweder wird die Bevölkerung schlicht negiert und aus dem Gesellschaftsbegriff eliminiert (wie z.B. in der Systemtheorie) oder es wird eine Art Überdeterminertheit der Gesellschaft durch die demographische Entwicklung unterstellt, wie z.B. in der gegenwärtigen Debatte über das 'Altern' oder 'Schrumpfen' der Gesellschaft. Der Beitrag weist beide dieser Positionen zurück und exploriert unterschiedliche Mechanismen des Zusammenhangs zwischen Bevölkerungsentwicklung und gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung.     Abstract: Abstract: Der für den Kasseler Soziologiekongress gewählte Titel "Die Natur der Gesellschaft" eröffnet unterschiedliche Bedeutungsfelder: Zum einen geht es um den Anspruch mancher Naturwissenschaftler, abschließende Erklärungen zu liefern, welche die Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften vielleicht sogar überflüssig machen könnten. Mit diesem Kampf der Disziplinen war stets auch die Frage verbunden, ob es eher "die Gesellschaft" oder "das Leben" sei, durch die man zu einem Verständnis der Existenzbedingungen des Menschen kommen könne. Zum anderen ergab sich eine Herausforderung für die Soziologie durch reduktionistische naturwissenschaftliche Erklärungsansätze und deren große öffentliche Resonanz. Die Formulierung "Natur der Gesellschaft", die sich schon bei Georg Simmel findet, weist vor diesem Hintergrund auf die soziale Konstruktion von äußerer und innerer Natur sowie auf die sozialen und soziologischen Verständnisse naturaler Voraussetzungen des menschlichen Lebens hin.     Abstract: Abstract: "Auch ohne den expliziten Prozess europäischer Verfassungsgebung zum Abschluss zu bringen, wird die Konstitutionalisierung der Europäischen Union in der Form einer Formalisierung und Legalisierung von Herrschaft voranschreiten. Die Verfasstheit des europäischen Gemeinwesens tritt dabei zunehmend in Widerspruch zur Verfasstheit des sozialen Konstituenten von Herrschaft, der weder als 'Demos' noch als 'Volk' in einem gesamteuropäischen Entscheidungszusammenhang in Erscheinung tritt. Allerdings mündet die Konstitutionalisierung der EU in dem Postulat eines 'europäischen Demos' als Voraussetzung der Legitimität europäischen Regierens. Die daran anschließende empirische Frage lautet, inwiefern solche geteilte normative Erwartungshaltungen in die Existenz eines europäischen 'Demos' kommunikative Austauschprozesse über die nationalstaatlichen Grenzen hinweg anleiten.     Abstract: Abstract: Der Autor erläutert in seinem Vortrag folgende These, aus welcher er eine Reihe von Prognosen und Spekulationen zur "medikalisierten" Gesellschaft ableitet: Der europäische Homo faber wird heute zusehends in eine Situation getrieben, in der es ihm nicht mehr erlaubt sein wird, von seiner natürlichen Konstitution wie von seiner Persönlichkeit so wenig zu wissen, wie es ihm gestern noch möglich war. Er wird zu einer kaum geahnten und doch gefürchteten Kenntnis von sich und zu Erwartungen gezwungen sein, weil solche Kenntnis durch die moderne Biotechnologie nunmehr möglich ist. Andernfalls würde der europäische Homo faber, der allzu ausschweifend von seiner Lizenz des Nichtwissens und der Eigenignoranz Gebrauch macht, umkommen und keine organisierte Gesellschaftlichkeit könnte ihm vom Sturz abhalten. Die Elemente eines solchen 'postsäkularen Naturverständnisses' werden an einigen Fällen erörtert: an der Bestimmung menschlichen Natur als eines sozialen Containers historischer Erfahrungen, an der Bestimmung der technischen Natur als der Materialität des Sozialen und an der Bestimmung der transzendenten Natur als einer Semantik gesellschaftlicher Selbstbestimmung. Die soziologische Entzauberung dieser 'Naturen' - und hier liegt das theoretisch interessante Problem - zerstört durch 'Objektivierung' nicht diese 'Naturen', sondern forciert den 're-entry' dieser Nature
