    Abstract: A trenchant case for a novel philosophical position: that our political thinking is driven less by commitments to freedom or fairness than by an aversion to hierarchy.Niko Kolodny argues that, to a far greater extent than we recognize, our political thinking is driven by a concern to avoid relations of inferiority. In order to make sense of the most familiar ideas in our political thought and discourse-the justification of the state, democracy, and rule of law, as well as objections to paternalism and corruption-we cannot merely appeal to freedom, as libertarians do, or to distributive fairness, as liberals do. We must instead appeal directly to claims against inferiority-to the conviction that no one should stand above or below.The problem of justifying the state, for example, is often billed as the problem of reconciling the state with the freedom of the individual. Yet, Kolodny argues, once we press hard enough on worries about the state's encroachment on the individual, we end up in opposition not to unfreedom but to social hierarchy. To make his case, Kolodny takes inspiration from two recent trends in philosophical thought: on the one hand, the revival of the republican and Kantian traditions, with their focus on domination and dependence; on the other, relational egalitarianism, with its focus on the effects of the distribution of income and wealth on our social relations.The Pecking Order offers a detailed account of relations of inferiority in terms of objectionable asymmetries of power, authority, and regard. Breaking new ground, Kolodny looks ahead to specific kinds of democratic institutions that could safeguard against such relations.

    Abstract: Arguments over the relationship between Canaanite and Israelite religion often derive from fundamental differences in presupposition, methodology and definition, yet debate typically focuses in on details and encourages polarization between opposing views, inhibiting progress. This volume seeks to initiate a cultural change in scholarly practice by setting up dialogues between pairs of experts in the field who hold contrasting views. Each pair discusses a clearly defined issue through the lens of a particular biblical passage, responding to each other's arguments and offering their reflections on the process. Topics range from the apparent application of 'chaos' and 'divine warrior' symbolism to Yahweh in Habakkuk 3, the evidence for 'monotheism' in pre-Exilic Judah in 2 Kings 22-23, and the possible presence of 'chaos' or creatio ex nihilo in Genesis 1 and Psalm 74. This approach encourages the recognition of points of agreement as well as differences and exposes some of the underlying issues that inhibit consensus. In doing so, it consolidates much that has been achieved in the past, offers fresh ideas and perspective and, through intense debate, subjects new ideas to thorough critique and suggests avenues for further research.

    Abstract: The role of migration for Christianity as a world religion during the last two centuries has drawn considerable attention from scholars in different fields. The main issue this book seeks to address is the question whether and to what extent migration and diaspora formation should be considered as elements of a new historiography of global Christianity, including the reflection upon earlier epochs. By focusing on migration and diaspora, the emerging map of Christianity will include the dimension of movement and interaction between actors in different regions, providing a more comprehensive 'map of agency' of individuals and groups previously regarded as passive. Furthermore, local histories will become parts of a broader picture and historiography might correlate both local and transregional perspectives in a balanced manner.     Abstract: Hannah Arendt was one of the foremost political theorists of the twentieth century to wrestle with the role of violence in public life. Yet remarkably, despite the fact that it was perhaps the most pressing issue of her era, this theme in her work has rarely been explored. In Violence and Power in the Thought of Hannah Arendt, Caroline Ashcroft deepens our understanding of Arendt's conception of the role of violence, offering a critical reading of her work and using it as a provocation to think about how we might engage with contemporary ideas.Arendt has generally been thought to exclude acts of violence from "the political," based on her supposed idealization of ancient democratic politics. Ashcroft argues that Arendt has been widely misunderstood by both critics and advocates on this. By examining Arendt's thought on violence in key examples of political practice such as modern Jewish politics, the politics of Greece and Rome, and the French and American revolutions, Ashcroft reveals a more pragmatic notion of the place of violence in the political. She argues that what Arendt opposes in political violence is the use of force to determine politics, an idea central to modern sovereignty. What Arendt criticizes is not violence as such, but the misuse of violence and misunderstandings of politics which exclude participatory power altogether.This work also engages with a wider set of concerns in political theory by obliging us to rethink the relations between violence and politics. Arendt's work offers a way to bridge the gulf between sovereign or realist politics and nonhierarchical, nonviolent participatory politics, and thus offers valuable resources for contemporary political theory.

    Abstract: In Around the Day in Eighty Worlds Martin Savransky calls for a radical politics of the pluriverse amid the ongoing devastation of the present. Responding to an epoch marked by the history of colonialism and ecological devastation, Savransky draws on the pragmatic pluralism of William James to develop what Savransky calls a "pluralistic realism"-an understanding of the world as simultaneously one and many, ongoing and unfinished, underway and yet to be made. Savransky explores the radical multifariousness of reality by weaving key aspects of James's thought together with divergent worlds and stories: of Magellan's circumnavigation, sorcery in Mozambique, God's felt presence among a group of evangelicals in California, visible spirits in Zambia, and ghosts in the wake of the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Throughout, he experiments with these storied worlds to dramatize new ways of approaching the politics of radical difference and the possibility of transforming reality. By exploring and constructing relations between James's pluralism and the ontological turn in anthropology, Savransky offers a new conceptualization of the pluriverse that fosters modes of thinking and living otherwise.

    Abstract: As we taste, chew, swallow, digest, and excrete, our foods transform us, while our eating, in its turn, affects the wider earthly environment. In Eating in Theory Annemarie Mol takes inspiration from these transformative entanglements to rethink what it is to be human. Drawing on fieldwork at food conferences, research labs, health care facilities, restaurants, and her own kitchen table, Mol reassesses the work of authors such as Hannah Arendt, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Hans Jonas, and Emmanuel Levinas. They celebrated the allegedly unique capability of humans to rise above their immediate bodily needs. Mol, by contrast, appreciates that as humans we share our fleshy substance with other living beings, whom we cultivate, cut into pieces, transport, prepare, and incorporate-and to whom we leave our excesses. This has far-reaching philosophical consequences. Taking human eating seriously suggests a reappraisal of being as transformative, knowing as entangling, doing as dispersed, and relating as a matter of inescapable dependence.

    Abstract: In Secular Translations, the anthropologist Talal Asad reflects on his lifelong engagement with secularism and its contradictions. He draws out the ambiguities in our concepts of the religious and the secular through a rich consideration of translatability and untranslatability, exploring the circuitous movements of ideas between histories and cultures.In search of meeting points between the language of Islam and the language of secular reason, Asad gives particular importance to the translations of religious ideas into nonreligious ones. He discusses the claim that liberal conceptions of equality represent earlier Christian ideas translated into secularism; explores the ways that the language and practice of religious ritual play an important but radically transformed role as they are translated into modern life; and considers the history of the idea of the self and its centrality to the project of the secular state. Secularism is not only an abstract principle that modern liberal democratic states espouse, he argues, but also a range of sensibilities. The shifting vocabularies associated with each of these sensibilities are fundamentally intertwined with different ways of life. In exploring these entanglements, Asad shows how translation opens the door for-or requires-the utter transformation of the translated. Drawing on a diverse set of thinkers ranging from al-Ghazālī to Walter Benjamin, Secular Translations points toward new possibilities for intercultural communication, seeking a language for our time beyond the language of the state.

To tell this story, Shai relies on rare documents, archival materials and interviews with individuals who were active in forming the relationship between these two states. He profiles Morris Cohen who, according to some, served as Sun Yat-sen’s personal advisor; gynecologist Dr. Ya’akov Rosenfeld, who rose to the rank of general in the Chinese Red Army and ended his career as a family physician in Tel Aviv; and international business magnate Shaul Eisenberg, otherwise known as “the king of China,” who executed the first Sino-Israeli military contacts. Shai also covers the attempts of major Israeli companies and business people to enter China, and describes the opportunities and risks involved when China purchases companies that are part of Israel’s national infrastructure.

    Abstract: Around the term 'place' a process of theory formation has emerged in English-language philosophy with hermeneutic and phenomenological orientation, which in Germany has until now rarely been acknowledged. This book changes that - with both foundational philosophical contributions from relevant authors on thinking about 'place' as well as with articles which illustrate the difficulties of 'place' via individual analyses of concrete examples. It addresses among others the meaning of 'place' in literature, popular media such as film and computer games, cults and myths, as well as in the fusion of economy and everyday experience.
    Abstract: Rund um den Begriff »Ort« hat in der englischsprachigen Philosophie hermeneutischer und phänomenologischer Prägung ein Prozess der Theoriebildung eingesetzt, der in Deutschland bislang nur wenig rezipiert wurde. Der Band ändert dies - er vereint sowohl grundlegende philosophische Beiträge zum Ortsdenken einschlägiger Autor_innen als auch Beiträge, in denen die Ortsproblematik an konkreten Beispielen in Einzelanalysen verdeutlicht wird. Zum Thema wird dabei u.a. die Bedeutung des Ortes in der Literatur, in populären Medien wie Film und Computerspielen, in Kult und Mythos sowie in der Verquickung von Ökonomie und Alltagserfahrung.

    Abstract: Since Edward Said’s foundational work, Orientalism has been singled out for critique as the quintessential example of Western intellectuals’ collaboration with oppression. Controversies over the imbrications of knowledge and power and the complicity of Orientalism in the larger project of colonialism have been waged among generations of scholars. But has Orientalism come to stand in for all of the sins of European modernity, at the cost of neglecting the complicity of the rest of the academic disciplines?In this landmark theoretical investigation, Wael B. Hallaq reevaluates and deepens the critique of Orientalism in order to deploy it for rethinking the foundations of the modern project. Refusing to isolate or scapegoat Orientalism, Restating Orientalism extends the critique to other fields, from law, philosophy, and scientific inquiry to core ideas of academic thought such as sovereignty and the self. Hallaq traces their involvement in colonialism, mass annihilation, and systematic destruction of the natural world, interrogating and historicizing the set of causes that permitted modernity to wed knowledge to power. Restating Orientalism offers a bold rethinking of the theory of the author, the concept of sovereignty, and the place of the secular Western self in the modern project, reopening the problem of power and knowledge to an ethical critique and ultimately theorizing an exit from modernity’s predicaments.     Abstract: As lived somatic realities and forms of practice, heterotopias form (im)possible places of confrontation/interaction. Throughout, corporeality remains the central point of reference in this analysis and helps concentrate the transdisciplinary examination on the (self-) realisations of the moving, somatic subject, as well as collective or institutionalised practices. The diverse theoretical perspectives present in this book open a horizon that comprises living intensities and abilities to act but also the fragile and critical.

    Abstract: Die Entwicklung freigeistiger Organisationen in Deutschland nach 1945 ist bislang unter dem Radarschirm der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften geblieben. Dabei lassen sich gerade seit der humanistischen Wende in den 1980er Jahren dynamische Wandlungsprozesse innerhalb der Szene wahrnehmen, deren Untersuchung einen wichtigen Beitrag zu interdisziplinären Debatten und öffentlichen Diskursen um das Verhältnis von Religion und Säkularität in der Gegenwart leisten kann. Diese Grounded Theory geleitete Studie entwickelt in diesem Zusammenhang eine Organisationstypologie, mit deren Hilfe nicht nur weltanschauliche Entwicklungen und strategische Spannungen innerhalb der gegenwärtigen freigeistigen Szene offengelegt, sondern auch gängige säkularisierungstheoretische Wahrnehmungsmuster des Gegenstandsfeldes hinterfragt und reinterpretiert werden. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf einer Ethnografie des Humanistischen Verbandes Deutschlands und der Giordano Bruno Stiftung. Die Studie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, das von der einen freigeistigen oder humanistischen „Bewegung“ nicht die Rede sein kann.

Ausgehend von der Fragestellung, welchen Einfluss Moscheen, Kindertagesstätten und Schulen, aber auch die Peers, Medien und die Gesellschaft auf die religiöse Sozialisation von muslimischen Kindern haben, rückt Ayse Uygun-Altunbas erstmalig muslimische Familien ins Zentrum der Analyse und greift hierzu die Perspektive der Eltern auf. Die qualitative Analyse zeichnet eine differenzierte Typologie der religiös-muslimischen Erziehungsvorstellungen nach und präsentiert typspezifische Merkmale der Familienreligiosität, Vermittlungsformen der religiösen Erziehung sowie weitere sozialisationsrelevante Einflüsse.

Mittels der Analyse von Konzerten, Liedtexten, CD-Covern und Interviews mit bekannten Musikern im Bereich des Pagan Metal diskutiert Serina Heinen das Verhältnis von Religion und Populärkultur.Dabei tritt ein wichtiger Aspekt von moderner Religion zutage, der in religionssoziologischen Debatten kaum Beachtung findet: Religion im populärkulturellen Kontext ist vieldeutig. Pagan Metal ist voller explizit religionsbezogener Symbolik, doch verstehen die Musiker ihre künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Religion nicht zwingend als religiöses Bekenntnis.
    Abstract: Religion is found not only in churches and mosques, but also in profane environments - even at heavy metal concerts. Through an analysis of concerts, lyrics, CD covers and interviews with famous musicians in the 'pagan metal' scene, Serina Heinen discusses the relationship between religion and popular culture. In the process, an important aspect of religion is brought to light that in the socio-religious debate on secularization and the return of religion is given hardly any attention: in a contemporary society strongly shaped by popular culture, religion does not necessarily have a religious connotation. The religious references in pagan metal are primarily used for stylistic purposes - and not as religious proclamations.

    Abstract: This book discusses the development of practices associated with customs and artifacts used in Jewish ceremonies when viewed from the vantage of anthropological studies. It can also function as a guide to practical halakhah. The author examines topics such as Torah Scrolls, ceremonial use of fire, Purim customs, the festival of Shavuot, magic and superstition. This investigation, at times, compares some Jewish observances with the wider cultural observances or notions of the broader, gentile societies in which Jews were located when these customs originated. It is found that the time and location of a practice’s origin is often critical to appreciating a shared context. In all cases the Jewish practice becomes reinterpreted within a specifically Jewish narrative and legal structure.

    Abstract: Spätestens seit der Lehre vom Naturzustand, die Thomas Hobbes auf so folgenreiche Weise ausgearbeitet hat, steht die Todesproblematik im Zentrum der politischen Philosophie. Denn unter der Bedingung einer geringeren Eindämmung durch Jenseitsfiktionen erscheint die Absolutheit des Todes nicht nur als eine angstbesetzte Bedrohung, sondern zugleich auch als das, was die politische Ordnung aufrecht erhält. Mit der Fundierung der Gemeinschaft in einer Todesdrohung, die alle angeht, taucht jedoch zugleich eine neue Problematik auf: die Zersetzung der Gemeinschaft, der wiederum allein durch den Horizont einer kollektiven Todesdrohung entgegengewirkt werden kann. Ausgehend von dieser Problematik, zeichnet die Studie von Leander Scholz am Leitfaden politischer Thanatologien den historischen Umbau von einer politischen Theologie zur politischen Ökonomie nach, sowie die Umformung der politischen Ökonomie zu einer politischen Ökologie. Hierbei steht die Formierung eines Lebenswillens im Vordergrund, der nicht mehr bereit ist, die Verinnerlichung der Todesdrohung als Horizont seiner Selbstbehauptung anzuerkennen.

    Abstract: In dieser Monographie wird, beginnend mit einem biographischen und zeitgeschichtlichen Grundriss, zum ersten Mal das umfangreiche strafrechtliche, rechtsphilosophische und philosophische Gesamtwerk Arthur Baumgartens dargestellt. Baumgarten war im Jahr seiner bei Franz v. Liszt verteidigten Dissertation (1909) nach Genf berufen worden und lehrte in Köln, Basel, Frankfurt/M. und Berlin. Von der dreiteiligen "Wissenschaft vom Recht" (1922) urteilte Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy im "Archiv des öffentlichen Rechts", hier sei die Jurisprudenz auf Philosophie gegründet, und die Lehre Baumgartens werde neben Stammler und Nelson die stärkste Wirkung aufs Rechtsdenken gewinnen. Mit seinen philosophischen Schriften wurde Baumgarten, beeinflusst von James und Dewey, in den zwanziger und dreißiger Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts ein Vordenker des sozialliberalen Pragmatismus in der deutschen Philosophie und nahm deren Hinwendung zur angloamerikanischen philosophischen Tradition um Jahrzehnte vorweg. 1933 erklärte er, unterm NS-Regime nicht Rechtwissenschaft lehren zu können, und ging von Frankfurt in die Schweizer Emigration. Die Erfahrung von Faschismus und Krieg führte ihn in der Mitte der vierziger Jahre zu sozialistischen Überzeugungen und Erwartungen und zur Marxschen sozialwissenschaftlichen Methode, so dass er, nach Frankfurt nicht zurückberufen, gleich anderen antifaschistischen Intellektuellen in die Ostzone und spätere DDR zog. Gerd Irrlitz behandelt die Hauptwerke und die marxistisch orientierten Texte Baumgartens - wie überhaupt die sozialliberale und die späte sozialistische Periode - nicht als Gegensätze, sondern als aufeinander bezogene und einander bedingende Konzepte, überzeugt, dass das Werk des Rechtsphilosophen unterm Erfordernis der Erneuerung des sozialen Liberalismus in der hochindustriellen Zivilisation neue Aktualität gewinnen...

    Abstract: Die Bedeutung des palästinensisch-amerikanischen Kritikers Edward W. Said (1935-2003) für die Zusammenführung vormals disparater kultureller und politischer Debatten ist international längst anerkannt. Erstmals liegt nun eine umfassende Werkeinführung und intellektuelle Biographie in deutscher Sprache vor. Unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der arabischen Diskurssituation illustriert die vergleichende Rezeptionsanalyse zudem die cross-kulturelle Wirkung Saids. In vergleichender Perspektive werden seine wechselnden epistemologischen und politischen Verortungen erschlossen. Die in die Studie einbezogenen Stimmen stammen aus der akademischen Kritik und Historiographie, der politischen Theorie, dem journalistischen und kreativen Schreiben sowie aus den audiovisuellen Künsten. Indem hier dezidiert der Frage nachgegangen wird, was tatsächlich geschieht, wenn Saids Kritik über die Grenzen kultureller und sozialer Differenz reist, gelingt es exemplarisch, die emanzipatorischen Potentiale, aber auch die Hindernisse des postkolonialen kritischen Engagements herauszuarbeiten.

Der Band gibt eine Einführung in aktuelle medienphilosophische Grundpositionen und vermittelt einen systematischen Überblick über Geschichte und Gegenwart der unterschiedlichen medienphilosophischen Teildisziplinen.     Abstract: How can there by a Jewish culture in today's Germany? Since the fall of the Wall, there has been a substantial increase in the visibility of Jews in German culture, not only an increase in the number of Jews living there, but, more importantly, an explosion of cultural activity. Jews are writing and making films about the central question of Jewish life after the Shoah. Given the xenophobia that has marked Germany since reunification, the appearance of a new Jewish is both surprising and normalizing. Even more striking than the reappearance of Jewish culture in England after the expulsion and massacres of the Middle Ages, the presence of a new generation of Jewish writers in Germany is a sign of the complexity and tenacity of modern Jewish life in the Diaspora. Edited by Sander L. Gilman and Karen Remmler and featuring works by many of the most noted specialists on the subject, including Susan Niemann, Y.
