Abstract: Migration, in its many forms, has often been found at the center of public and private discourse surrounding German nationalism and identity, significantly influencing how both states construct conceptions of what it means to be "German" at any given place and time. The attempt at constructing an ethnically homogeneous Third Reich was shattered by the movement of refugees, expellees, and soldiers in the aftermath of the Second World War, and the contracting of foreign nationals as Gastarbeiter in the Federal Republic and Vertragsarbeiter in the German Democratic Republic in the 1960s and 70s diversified the ethnic landscape of both Cold War German states during the latter half of the Cold War. Bethany Hicks shows how the regional migration of East Germans into the western federal states both during and after German unification challenged essential Cold War assumptions concerning the ability to integrate two very different German populations.

Anhand von qualitativen Untersuchungen des Ernährungsalltags von remigrierten und nicht ausgesiedelten Russlanddeutschen veranschaulicht Anna Flack, ob und inwiefern Zugehörigkeiten vielschichtig, kontextabhängig und sogar widersprüchlich sind - und liefert damit gleichzeitig spannende Einblicke in die Alltagspraxen dieser von der Forschung bisher vernachlässigten Bevölkerungsgruppe.

Abstract: »Nakba« bedeutet »Katastrophe« und bezeichnet aus arabischer Sicht die erste Eskalation des Konflikts zwischen Juden und Palästinensern 1948. Den Einfluss dieses Erbes auf die sogenannte dritte Generation untersucht Katharina Kretzschmar interdisziplinär anhand ausführlicher biografischer Interviews mit Palästinensern aus Israel, der Westbank und dem Gazastreifen. Abstract: Using the economic crisis as a starting point, Messy Europe offers a critical new look at the issues of race, gender, and national understandings of self and other in contemporary Europe. It highlights and challenges historical associations of Europe with whiteness and modern civilization, and asks how these associations are re-envisioned, re-inscribed, or contested in an era characterized by crises of different kinds. Abstract: Jew. The word possesses an uncanny power to provoke and unsettle. For millennia, Jew has signified the consummate Other, a persistent fly in the ointment of Western civilization’s grand narratives and cultural projects. Only very recently, however, has Jew been reclaimed as a term of self-identification and pride. With these insights as a point of departure, this book offers a wide-ranging exploration of the key word Jew—a term that lies not only at the heart of Jewish experience, but indeed at the core of Western civilization. Examining scholarly debates about the origins and early meanings of Jew, Cynthia M. Baker interrogates categories like “ethnicity,” “race,” and “religion” that inevitably feature in attempts to define the word. Tracing the term’s evolution, she also illuminates its many contradictions, revealing how Jew has served as a marker of materialism and intellectualism, socialism and capitalism, worldly cosmopolitanism and clannish parochialism, chosen status, and accursed stigma. Baker proceeds to explore the complex challenges that attend the modern appropriation of Jew as a term of self-identification, with forays into Yiddish language and culture, as well as meditations on Jew-as-identity by contemporary public intellectuals. Finally, by tracing the phrase new Jews through a range of contexts—including the early Zionist movement, current debates about Muslim immigration to Europe, and recent sociological studies in the United States—the book provides a glimpse of what the word Jew is coming to mean in an era of Internet cultures, genetic sequencing, precarious nationalisms, and proliferating identities. ...

Abstract: Junge muslimische Männer sind die neuen Sündenböcke in den westlichen Gesellschaften - sie werden dämonisiert und sensationalisiert. Das seit dem »11. September« gesteigerte Interesse an muslimisch-migrantischen Geschlechterbeziehungen gilt vornehmlich dem Stereotyp des »aggressiven und patriarchalen Migranten«. Die Frage nach der konkreten Bedeutung von Migration und Religion für die Transformation und (Re-)Konstruktion männlicher Identitäten wird nicht gestellt. Dieser Band schließt die Lücke in der deutschsprachigen Forschung und bringt interdisziplinäre Forschungsergebnisse zu den Schnittstellen von »Migration und Männlichkeit« sowie »Maskulinität und Islam« zusammen.
