    Abstract: At the height of the Vietnam War, American society was so severely fragmented that it seemed that Americans may never again share common concerns. The media and other commentators represented the impact of the war through a variety of rhetorical devices, most notably the emotionally charged metaphor of "the wound that will not heal."     Abstract: Main description: Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes untersuchen das Reisen und die Reiseliteratur in Deutschland zwischen 1918 und 1945 im engen Zusammenhang mit den allgemeinen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungen. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei zunächst die Aspekte einer 'Modernisierung' des Reisens, wie sie am Ausbau des Tourismus und der Verkehrsmittel abzulesen ist. Weitere Beiträge erschließen die Reiseliteratur dieser Jahrzehnte. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Reiseliteraturgeschichte des "Dritten Reiches", die bisher noch kaum erforscht wurde.
    Abstract: Main description: The articles in this volume examine travel and travel literature in Germany between 1918 and 1945 and relate them to the general social and political developments in that period. A central concern of the first group of articles is to point up various aspects of the 'modernization' of travel as reflected in the expansion of tourism and in transportation progress. Subsequent contributions look at travel literature in the period in question. Major emphasis is given here to the history of travel literature in the Third Reich, a subject hitherto largely neglected.

    Abstract: In this book Jonathan Hall seeks to demonstrate that the ethnic groups of ancient Greece, like many ethnic groups throughout the world today, were not ultimately racial, linguistic, religious or cultural groups, but social groups whose 'origins' in extraneous territories were just as often imagined as they were real. Adopting an explicitly anthropological point of view, he examines the evidence of literature, archaeology and linguistics to elucidate the nature of ethnic identity in ancient Greece. Rather than treating Greek ethnic groups as 'natural' or 'essential' - let alone 'racial' - entities, he emphasises the active, constructive and dynamic role of ethnography, genealogy, material culture and language in shaping ethnic consciousness. An introductory chapter outlines the history of the study of ethnicity in Greek antiquity

Abdolreza Scheybani beschreibt und erklärt die letztlich geglückte Integration dieser traditionellen Berufsgruppen in das sich herausbildende wirtschaftliche, soziale und politische System der Bundesrepublik. Er greift dabei die zentrale Frage nach der Wechselwirkung zwischen der Mittelstandspolitik einerseits und den Veränderungen der ökonomischen Bedingungen und der Lebensverhältnisse der gewerblichen Mittelschicht andererseits auf. Das Massensterben mittelständischer Kleinstbetriebe und die Entstehung einer außer- und tendenziell antiparlamentarischen Opposition in Gestalt des sogenannten Mittelstandsblocks zeigen, daß dieser Prozeß keineswegs reibungslos verlief und erhebliches politisches Konfliktpotential in sich barg.     Abstract: In this thought-provoking interdisciplinary work, Shaun Marmon describes how eunuchs, as a category of people who embodied ambiguity, both defined and mediated critical thresholds of moral and physical space in the household, in the palace and in the tomb of pre-modern Islamic society. Theauthor's central focus is on the sacred society of eunuchs who guarded the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad in Medina for over six centuries and whose last representatives still perform many of their time honored rituals to this day. Through Marmon's account, the "sacred" eunuchs of Medina becomehistorical guides into uncharted dimensions of Islamic ritual, political symbolism, social order, gender and time.

    Abstract: How did Judaism, a religion so often defined by its minority status, attain equal footing in the trinity of Catholicism, Protestantism, and Judaism that now dominates modern American religious life? THE AMERICANIZATION OF THE JEWS seeks out the effects of this evolution on both Jews in America and an America with Jews. Although English, French, and Dutch Jewries are usually considered the principal forerunners of modern Jewry, Jews have lived as long in North America as they have in post- medieval Britain and France and only sixty years less than in Amsterdam. As one of the four especially creative Jewish communities that has helped re-shape and re-formulate modern Judaism, American Judaism is the most complex and least understood. German Jewry is recognized for its contribution to modern Jewish theology and philosophy, Russian and Polish Jewry is known for its secular influence in literature, and Israel clearly offers Judaism a new stance as a homeland. But how does one capture the interplay between America and Judaism? Immigration to America meant that much of Judaism was discarded, and much was retained. Acculturation did not always lead to assimilation: Jewishness was honed as an independent variable in the motivations of many of its American adherents- -and has remained so, even though Jewish institutions, ideologies, and even Jewish values have been reshaped by America to such an degree that many Jews of the past might not recognize as Jewish some of what constitutes American Jewishness. This collection of essays explores the paradoxes that abound in the America/Judaism relationship, focusing on such specific issues as Jews and American politics in the twentieth century, the adaptation of Jewish religious life to the American environment, the contributions and impact of the women's movement, and commentaries on the Jewish future in America.
