Behind the façade of vote-winning strategies, the far right has provided a substantive ideological engagement with the natural environment. Building on the nationalist bent of early green thought and the perceived nexus of pristine nature and cultural purity, Far-Right Ecologism has ideologically adopted the green elements of other ideologies, such as conservatism and fascism, but also of those considered to be 'thin-centred', such as nationalism and populism. Through an authentic experience of learning from the Eastern European, post-socialist realms, this book explores the ideology, ecological discourse, and policy proposals behind the increasing impact of far-right actors on environmental politics in Hungary and Poland. Each chapter begins with stories from the interviewees to illustrate how the far right in Hungary and Poland attempts to permeate environmental politics and even forge partnerships with green actors through specific, local-based policy contributions. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

It shows how magic and magical thinking are regular elements in people's daily activities, and that understanding the components of the witchcraft complex offers surprisingly important insights into patterns of thinking and social behavior.     Abstract: Obdachlose gehören zum städtischen Alltag. Sie sind sichtbar und werden zugleich kaum wahrgenommen. Nadine Recktenwald blickt in die historischen Räume der Obdachlosen wie Asyle, Notunterkünfte und selbstangeeignete Orte. Sie untersucht deren Erfahrungen mit urbanen Strukturen, sozialstaatlichen Maßnahmen und gesellschaftlicher In- und Exklusion. In der Weimarer Republik profitierten Obdachlose erstmals von kommunaler Sozialfürsorge. Zugleich blieb Obdachlosigkeit bis 1974 ein Straftatbestand. Diese Ambivalenz zwischen Fürsorge und Strafe ermöglichte Handlungsspielräume für die Betroffenen ebenso wie für die staatlichen Akteure. Insbesondere aber nicht nur im Nationalsozialismus wurden Obdachlose verdrängt und verfolgt. Mit einem raumanalytischen Ansatz, umfangreichen Quellen und Einzelbiografien erforscht die Autorin, wie Obdachlose spezifische soziale Praktiken ausbildeten, um ihre gesellschaftliche Position zu beeinflussen. Eindrucksvoll zeigt sie die Interaktionen der Betroffenen untereinander ebenso wie mit Ämtern, der Justiz und den städtischen Öffentlichkeiten. Eine aufschlussreiche Sozial- und Stadtgeschichte der Obdachlosen in der Weimarer Republik, im Nationalsozialismus und in der Bundesrepublik.

    Abstract: This book focuses on how to improve the collection, analysis and responsible use of data on global migration and international mobility. While migration remains a topic of great policy interest for governments around the world, there is a serious lack of reliable, timely, disaggregated and comparable data on it, and often insufficient safeguards to protect migrants' information. Meanwhile, vast amounts of data about the movement of people are being generated in real time due to new technologies, but these have not yet been fully captured and utilized by migration policymakers, who often do not have enough data to inform their policies and programmes. The lack of migration data has been internationally recognized; the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration urges all countries to improve data on migration to ensure that policies and programmes are evidence-based, but does not spell out how this could be done. This book examines both the technical issues associated with improving data on migration and the wider political challenges of how countries manage the collection and use of migration data. The first part of the book discusses how much we really know about international migration based on existing data, and key concepts and approaches which are often used to measure migration. The second part of the book examines what measures could be taken to improve migration data, highlighting examples of good practice from around the world in recent years, across a range of different policy areas, such as health, climate change and sustainable development more broadly. Concrete examples of different kinds of discourse are vital for the study of social movements because their activities are not limited to such well-known forms of contention as marches, occupations or strikes, but also daily discursive activities, such as meetings, assemblies, interviews, press conferences, manifestos, pamphlets, banners, graffiti, websites, blogs, social media posts and everyday talk. This book proposes that empirical analyses of these discourses should go beyond the popular but vague notion of "frame" and engage in more detailed and explicit analyses of the text and talk of social movements. With a current population of more than 360, the village has been home to the Pumi people for more than 500 years. Over the first six decades of the People’s Republic of China, Yushichang village has managed to protect both its ecological environment and the Pumi culture. Drawing on a rich trove of oral history and ethnographic studies, this book tries to understand, at both the micro and macro levels, how this population has navigated the tension between tradition and modernity and what resources it might bring to bear to meet future challenges.

    Abstract: Die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie Bruno Latours kennt kein Konzept des Fremden. Dies mag irritierend erscheinen, bedenkt man, dass die Figur des Fremden eines der zentralen Schlüsselkonzepte der Soziologie darstellt. Von Simmel bis Schütz stehen Fremdheit und der Fremde stets im Spannungsverhältnis zum Eigenen, welches gerade in der Begegnung des Fremden besonders sichtbar wird. Mit Werkzeugen der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie entwirft Edda Mack eine soziologische Denkweise, die das Theoretisieren selbst in den Mittelpunkt soziologischer Forschung stellt. Am Beispiel der Fluchtmigrationsforschung zeigt sie auf, dass eine solche Denkweise in ihrer Umsetzung nah bei den Dingen von Belang bleiben kann.

    Abstract: Suizidalität zu erkennen, darauf richtig zu reagieren und Betroffene schließlich wieder zum Leben zu überzeugen, gehört zu den herausfordernden, aber auch alltäglichen psychiatrischen Aufgaben. Die Suizidforschung konzentriert sich meist auf Risikofaktoren, Erklärungsmodelle und einzelne suizidpräventive Maßnahmen. Die vorliegende Ethnographie macht die Suizidprävention hingegen selbst zum Gegenstand der Analyse und Kritik. Ergebnis ist eine Geschichte und eine praxisfähige Theorie der Suizidprävention, welche die Herausforderungen, Schwierigkeiten und Widersprüche dieser Arbeit analysiert: In der Suizidprävention wird das normative Grundprinzip der autonomen Lebensführung oftmals gleichermaßen verteidigt wie auch praktisch infrage gestellt. Die schwierigen Spannungsverhältnisse von Therapie und Kontrolle, Tabu und Narrativ, Prävention und Ansteckung zeigen sich hier besonders deutlich. Diese Widersprüche herauszuarbeiten ist von geradezu existenzieller Bedeutung – und Ziel dieses Buches.

    Abstract: In this book, Olukunle Olowabi explores the divergent developmental consequences of nations in the Global South that were shaped on the one hand by forced settlement, where European colonists established large-scale agricultural plantations with enslaved African labour, and on the other by colonial occupation. He shows that most forced settlement colonies emerged from European domination with higher levels of education attainment, greater postcolonial democratization, and favourable human development outcomes relative to Global South countries that emerged from colonial occupation after 1945.

Providing a comparative analysis of their anthropological and poetic works, this volume explores the divergent representations of cultural others and the uses of ethnographic studies for cultural critique. This volume aims to illuminate central questions, including: Why did they choose to write poetry about their ethnographic endeavors? Why did they choose to write the way they wrote?     Abstract: Information and communications technology (ICT) skills are crucial for labour market success and full participation in society. Socioeconomic status (SES) inequality in the development of ICT skills would prevent disadvantaged children from reaping the benefits of the digital age. Besides, the digital divide in ICT literacy might add to the already well-documented large and persistent SES inequality in ‘hard’ skills—like math, reading, and science. This chapter studies the roots, evolution, and drivers of SES inequality in ICT literacy from age 8 to 15 in Germany. Drawing from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we highlight five main findings: (1) SES gaps in ICT literacy exist as early as age 8 (grade 3) and are similar in size compared to SES gaps in hard skills; (2) like hard skills, SES gaps in ICT literacy remain stable over primary and tracked lower secondary schooling; (3) ICT access and use at home and school do not substantially explain SES gaps in ICT literacy at any age; (4) selection into school tracks seems a critical pathway, although not necessarily a causal one, leading to SES inequality in secondary school; (5) SES gaps in ICT literacy are not observed among children with similar levels of hard skills. We discuss the implications of these findings for the interdisciplinary literature on social stratification, skill formation, and the digital divide.

Hektik und Geschäftigkeit im urbanen Raum scheinen Menschen zu Funktionsträgern zu verwandeln. Die Brüchigkeit dieser vorherrschenden Vorstellung zeigt sich aber bereits an Figuren wie der des Flaneurs, der sich gerade im Getriebe der Großstadt gelassen bewegt. Auch scheinbar gegenläufige Tendenzen lassen sich erkennen: Orte wie Stadtparks oder Museen suggerieren ebenso Refugien der Entschleunigung wie eine wachsende 'Erholungsindustrie'. Im selben Moment können aber solche Angebote wieder den Mechanismen der Zweckgebundenheit und der Selbstoptimierung unterliegen. Der Sammelband widmet sich diesen komplexen Fragen und ambivalenten Befunden und beleuchtet erstmals aus geistes-, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive mögliche Freiräume der Muße im urbanen Raum.

    Abstract: This chapter explores the fuzzy boundaries of who is an irregular migrant in China, and how the latent threat of being cast as irregular influences the lives of migrants. The shorthand for irregular migration in China is "three illegals” (san fei), which comprises unlawful entry, residence, and work. Drawing upon data about different groups of migrants in China, including traders, students, marriage migrants, and returnees, the chapter discusses how foreigners in China are continuously at risk of having their status changed from “legal” to “illegal”. This transition can result from national or local changes in law enforcement or from idiosyncratic events, such as residents reporting migrants in the wake of, for example, conflicts between migrant tenants and landlords or international students and university administrators. Policies and enforcement practices to regulate international migration in the People's Republic of China today build on past and current methods to control internal migration.

    Abstract: This chapters addresses digital inequalities in young people’s daily lives and well-being. The chapter examines how adolescents’ digital engagement differs across family socioeconomic status (SES) and gender, and how it relates to their mental health outcomes. Analyses use longitudinal data from the Growing Up in Ireland study from age 9 to 18, combined with cross-national data from the Health Behaviour in School-Aged survey on adolescents aged 11-15 across 35 industrialised countries. Longitudinal analyses reveal that low-SES adolescents and girls experience higher mental health problems as they increase their time using digital devices, compared to high-SES adolescents and boys. Cross-national analyses indicate that, while boys spend more time in digital activities, girls are at higher risks of experiencing mental health problems from engaging with digital activities. However, the magnitude of these gendered patterns differs markedly across national contexts. Cross-country comparisons on SES yield mixed results: in some countries low-SES adolescents are mentally more harmed by their digital engagement (i.e., Switzerland, Austria, Norway), but in other countries high-SES adolescents are those at higher mental health risks from using digital devices (i.e., Portugal, Czech Republic, Bulgaria). The chapter findings are discussed within the existing literature on digital inequalities and young people’s well-being.

    Abstract: The first full-length study of cycling activism through the lens of social movement theory, this book demonstrates that, despite tremendous differences, bike activism can be understood as a continuous and connected activity spanning a century and a half and across continents.     Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert war geprägt von Völkermorden. Die literarische Auseinandersetzung im deutschsprachigen Raum beschränkte sich dabei lange Zeit auf den nationalsozialistischen Judenmord. Anknüpfend an Ansätze der vergleichenden Genozidforschung und der literarischen Aufarbeitung der Shoah zeigt Gerald Manstetten, dass mittlerweile auch andere Genozide in den literarischen Fokus genommen werden. Am Beispiel von neun deutschsprachigen Werken weist er diese Entwicklung ebenso nach wie den noch immer starken Einfluss der Shoah auf das Schreiben über Genozide in deutscher Sprache.

    Abstract: Angeregt durch ihr Studium der Anthropologie begibt sich Ursula Walter-Okine auf eine Forschungsreise. Im Archiv der Norddeutschen Missionsgesellschaft in Bremen findet sie Briefe und Berichte ihres Großvaters Ernst Paul Walter, der von 1912 bis 1914 in der damaligen deutschen Kolonie Togo als Missionar und Lehrer tätig war. Im Bewusstsein um die etwa hundert Jahre zurück liegende „wandernde Gedächtnislücke“ befragt die Autorin Angehörige von Zeitzeugen in Süddeutschland und an der westafrikanischen Küste. Sie entwirft ein vielschichtiges Bild, ein Erinnerungsmosaik, gespeist aus Überlegungen, historischen Fotos, Berichten und Interviews. Sie bettet ihre Ergebnisse in Theorien zu kollektivem, historischem, individuellem und transkulturellem Gedächtnis ein. Mit dieser Studie bietet sie Lesenden einen persönlichen Einblick und Zugang zur Aufarbeitung deutscher Kolonial-Missionsgeschichte.
