Abstract: Archival research into policing and surveillance of migrant women illuminates pressing contemporary issues. Examining little-known policing archives in France, Senegal, and Cambodia, Jennifer Anne Boittin unearths the stories of hundreds of women labelled 'undesirable' by the French colonial police and society in the early 20th century. These 'undesirables' were often women travelling alone, women who were poor or ill, women of colour, or women whose intimate lives were deemed unruly. In considering how ordinary women pursued autonomy, security, companionship, or simply a better existence in the face of surveillance and control, 'Undesirable' illuminates pressing contemporary issues of migration and violence.

Abstract: This work reveals how the denial of race as a social category maintains and reproduces systematic racism in contemporary France. Léonard offers an in-depth analysis of contentious issues in society, revealing how color-blind racism is at the centre of social inequality in France.

Abstract: 'From Servant to Savant' exposes the fundamental role that the French Revolution played in the emergence of modern professional musicianship. Geoffroy-Schwinden demonstrates how the French Revolution set the stage for the emergence of so-called musical 'Romanticism' among the likes of Beethoven and the legacies that continue to haunt musical institutions and industries.

Abstract: 'Feminism's Empire' investigates the complex relationships between imperialisms and feminisms in the late nineteenth century and demonstrates the challenge of conceptualizing "pro-imperialist" and "anti-imperialist" as binary positions. By intellectually and spatially tracing the era's first French feminists' engagement with empire, Carolyn J. Eichner explores how feminists opposed - yet employed - approaches to empire in writing, speaking, and publishing.

Abstract: Based on four years of embedded observation in the cabinet of a European Commissioner, this book develops a sociology of international political work. Empirically, it offers an insider's chronicle of the European Union between 2015 and 2019. The analysis traces the successes and failures of Commissioner Pierre Moscovici and his team on five issues that defined European politics between 2015 and 2019: the Greek crisis, budgetary disputes with Spain and Portugal, the rise of populism in Italy, the reform of the eurozone, and the fight against tax evasion. The aim is not to ascertain whether the Commission's policy was good or bad, but to understand how political work is done in a European Union where the 'spectacle of power' is blurred by 24 official languages, 28 national histories, a powerful technocracy, and sometimes opaque institutions. 0As a life-long socialist politician and former French finance minister, Pierre Moscovici was perhaps the most intensely political character in Jean-Claude Juncker's self-styled 'Political Commission'. Brandishing his leftist identity, rejecting technocratic talk, he surrounded himself with staffers sharing his ambition - but also critical of his actions. Shadowing them from the corridors of the Berlaymont, the seat of the European Commission, to Washington and Athens, The Political0Commissioner throws light on the partisan struggles that shaped the Juncker Commission, tensions with the Eurogroup and the Parliament, and recurring conflicts with the Member States. It also shows how political staffers operate informally and in their interaction with the media and civil servants, as they craft and sell public policies to the public.0In this ethnographic narrative, French politics is never far away. Decoding the European policy of a French, Socialist Commissioner, first under Francois Hollande and then Emmanuel Macron, the book investigates the dynamics that sometimes bring Brussels and Paris together, sometimes set them ap

Abstract: This study of Jewish cultural innovation in early twentieth-century France highlights the complexity and ambivalence of Jewish identity and self-definition in the modern world. Following the Dreyfus affair, French Jews increasingly began to question how Jewishness should be defined in a society where Jews enjoyed full political equality. Writers began to explore biblical themes, traditional Jewish folklore, and issues of identity and assimilation. A plethora of new journals focusing on Jewish religion, history, and culture came into being, as did a multitude of associations that emphasized Jewish distinctiveness. This book explores this blossoming of Jewish cultural life in France. It shows that the interface between the various groups was as important as the differences between them.

Abstract: French feminisms were central to the theory and culture of Second Wave feminism as an international movement, and 1975 was a key year for the women's movement in France. Forty years on, this book offers a critical review of the political activism and the cultural creativity of that moment, from the perspective of both preceding and subsequent `waves' of feminism. It explores the importance and the legacies of 1975, and their strengths and limitations as new questions and new conjunctures have come into play. Edited and written by an international collective of feminist scholars, the text represents both a critical re-evaluation of a vital moment in women's cultural and political history - and a new analysis of the relationship between Second Wave agendas and contemporary feminist politics and culture.

Abstract: The changing look and feel of metropolitan France has been a notable preoccupation of French culture since the 1980s. This collection of essays explores concern with space across a range of media, from recent cinema, documentary filmmaking and photographic projects to television drama and contemporary fiction, and examines what it reveals about the fluctuating state of the nation in a post-colonial and post-industrial age.

Abstract: This book uncovers an unfamiliar vision of political violence that nonetheless prevailed in modern French thought: that through "redemptive violence" the people would not rend but regenerate society. It homes in on invocations of popular redemptive violence across four historical moments in France specifically: the French Revolution, Algeria's colonization, the Paris Commune, and the eve of the first World War. In each of these cases, the book reveals how French thinkers experienced democratization as social disintegration. Yet, before such danger, they also proclaimed that virtuous violence by the people could repair the social fabric. The path leading from an anarchic multitude to an organized democratic society required, not violence's prohibition, but its virtuous expression by the people.

Abstract: 'The Persian Mirror' explores France's preoccupation with Persia in the seventeenth century. Long before Montesquieu's 'Persian Letters', French intellectuals, diplomats, and even ordinary Parisians were fascinated by Persia and eagerly consumed travel accounts, fairy tales, and the spectacle of the Persian ambassador's visit to Paris and Versailles in 1715. Using diplomatic sources, fiction, and printed and painted images, the text describes how the French came to see themselves in Safavid Persia. In doing so, it revises our notions of Orientalism and the exotic and suggests that early modern Europeans had more nuanced responses to Asia than previously imagined.

Abstract: The aftermath of Algeria's revolutionary war for independence coincided with the sexual revolution in France, and in this text Todd Shepard argues that these two movements are inextricably linked. 'Sex, France, and Arab Men, 1962-1979' is a history of how and why - from the upheavals of French Algeria in 1962 through the 1970s - highly sexualized claims about Arabs were omnipresent in important public French discussions, both those that dealt with sex and those that spoke of Arabs.

Abstract: This work traces the global, national, and local origins of the conflict between Muslims and Jews in France, challenging the belief that rising anti-Semitism in France is rooted solely in the unfolding crisis in Israel and Palestine. Maud Mandel shows how the conflict in fact emerged from processes internal to French society itself even as it was shaped by affairs elsewhere, particularly in North Africa during the era of decolonization.

Abstract: By looking back to the emergence of a postwar theoretical discourse on trauma, memory, victims, suffering, the Holocaust and the Jews, 'Is Theory Good for the Jews?' explores how 'French thought' is implicated in intellectual, literary and ideological components of the global and local upsurge of antisemitism. The author probes the legacy of Heidegger in France and exposes the shortcomings of radical social critique and postcolonial theory confronted to the challenge of Islamic terrorism and Jew hatred. This work analyzes French responses that have regrettably played their part in generating the new antisemitism.

Abstract: In contemporary France, particularly in the banlieues of Paris, the figure of the young, virile, hypermasculine Muslim looms large. So large, in fact, it often supersedes liberal secular society's understanding of gender and sexuality altogether. Engaging the nexus of race, gender, nation, and sexuality, 'Sexagon' studies the broad politicization of Franco-Arab identity in the context of French culture and its assumptions about appropriate modes of sexual and gender expression, both gay and straight.

Abstract: What constitutes a need? Who gets to decide what people do or do not need? In modern France, scientists, both amateur and professional, were engaged in defining and measuring human needs. These scientists did not trust in a providential economy to distribute the fruits of labour and uphold the social order. Rather, they believed that social organisation should be directed according to scientific principles. They grounded their study of human needs on quantifiable foundations: agricultural and physiological experiments, demographic studies, and statistics. The result was the concept of the 'vital minimum' - the living wage, a measure of physical and social needs. In this book, Dana Simmons traces the history of this concept, revealing the intersections between technologies of measurement, such as calorimeters and social surveys, and technologies of wages and welfare.

Abstract: In France as elsewhere in recent years, legislative debates over single-parent households, same-sex unions, new reproductive technologies, transsexuality, and other challenges to long-held assumptions about the structure of family and kinship relations have been deeply divisive. What strikes many as uniquely French, however, is the extent to which many of these discussions-whether in legislative chambers, courtrooms, or the mass media-have been conducted in the frequently abstract vocabularies of anthropology and psychoanalysis. This book seeks to explain why and how academic discourses on kinship have intersected and overlapped with political debates on the family-and on the nature of French republicanism itself.

Abstract: For over a century French officials in Indochina systematically uprooted metis children - those born of Southeast Asian mothers and white, African, or Indian fathers - from their homes. In many cases, and for a wide range of reasons - death, divorce, the end of a romance, a return to France, or because the birth was the result of rape - the father had left the child in the mother's care. Although the program succeeded in rescuing homeless children from life on the streets, for those in their mothers' care it was disastrous. Citing an 1889 French law and claiming that raising children in the Southeast Asian cultural milieu was tantamount to abandonment, colonial officials sought permanent, 'protective' custody of the children. The Uprooted offers an in-depth investigation of the colony's child-removal program: the motivations behind it, reception of it, and resistance to it.

Abstract: This book traces the fortunes of three French families in the municipality of Vannes, in Brittany - Galles, Jollivet, and Le Ridant - who rose to prominence in publishing, law, the military, public administration, and intellectual pursuits over the course of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Revisiting complex issues of bourgeois class formation in France from the perspective of the interior lives of families, the book argues that the most durable and socially advantageous links forging bourgeois ascent were those of kinship.

Abstract: Despite much scholarship on the Holocaust, little has focused on what happened to Europe's Jewish communities after the war. Unlike many other nations, France had a significant post-war Jewish community. This volume offers insights on key aspects of French Jewish life in the following decades. It examines the ways in which moral and political issues of responsibility combined with the urgent problems and practicalities of restoration, and illustrates how national imperatives, international dynamics, and a changed self-perception helped to shape the fortunes of post-war French Judaism.

Abstract: In Victorian Britain an array of writers captured the excitement of new scientific discoveries, and enticed young readers and listeners into learning their secrets, by converting introductory explanations into quirky, charming, and imaginative fairy-tales; forces could be fairies, dinosaurs could be dragons, and looking closely at a drop of water revealed a soup of monsters.Science in Wonderland explores how these stories were presented and read. Melanie Keene introduces and analyses a range of Victorian scientific fairy-tales, from nursery classics such as The Water-Babies to the little-known...

Abstract: We are a weird species. Like other species, we have a culture. But by comparison with other species, we are strangely unstable: human cultures self-transform, diverge, and multiply with bewildering speed. They vary, radically and rapidly, from time to time and place to place. And the way we live - our manners, morals, habits, experiences, relationships, technology, values - seems to be changing at an ever accelerating pace. The effects can be dislocating, baffling, sometimes terrifying. Why is this?In A Foot in the River, best-selling historian Felipe Fernández-Armesto sifts through the evidenc...

Abstract: Chris Cummins presents a novel pragmatic account of the meaning and use of numerically-quantified expressions. In it, the author lays out a set of criteria that are argued individually to influence the speaker's choice of expression. The process of choosing what to say is then treated as a problem of multiple constraint satisfaction. This approach enables multiple different considerations, drawn from principles of semantics, pragmatics, philosophy, psycholinguistics and the psychology of number, simultaneously to be integrated within a single coherent account.

Abstract: Scholars of language ideology have encouraged us to reflect on and explore where social categories come from, how they have been reproduced, and whether and to what extent they are relevant to everyday interactional practices. Taking up these issues, this book focuses on how ethnicity has been semiotically constructed, valued, and reproduced in Indonesia since Dutch colonial times, and how signs or emblems from this construct are used in everyday talk.

Abstract: The rapid developments in technologies - especially computing and the advent of many 'smart' devices, as well as rapid and perpetual communication via the Internet - has led to a frequently voiced view which Nicholas Agar describes as 'radical optimism'. Radical optimists claim that accelerating technical progress will soon end poverty, disease, and ignorance, and improve our happiness and well-being. Agar disputes the claim that technological progress will automatically produce great improvements in subjective well-being. He argues that radical optimism 'assigns to technological progress an undeserved pre-eminence among all the goals pursued by our civilization'. Instead, Agar uses the most recent psychological studies about human perceptions of well-being to create a realistic model of the impact technology will have. Although he accepts that technological advance does produce benefits, he insists that these are significantly less than those proposed by the radical optimists, and aspects of such progress can also pose a threat to values such as social justice and our relationship with nature, while problems such as poverty cannot be understood in technological terms. He concludes by arguing that a more realistic assessment of the benefits that technological advance can bring will allow us to better manage its risks in future.--

Abstract: By examining Amilcar Cabral s theories and praxes, as well as several of the antecedents and major influences on the evolution of his radical politics and critical social theory, Concepts of Cabralism: Amilcar Cabral and Africana Critical Theory simultaneously reintroduces, chronicles, and analyzes several of the core characteristics of the Africana tradition of critical theory. Reiland Rabaka s primary preoccupation is with Cabral s theoretical and political legacies that is to say, with the ways in which he constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed theory and the aims, objectives, and concrete outcomes of his theoretical applications and discursive practices. The book begins with the Negritude Movement, and specifically the work of Leopold Senghor, Aime Cesaire, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Next, it shifts the focus to Frantz Fanon s discourse on radical disalienation and revolutionary decolonization. Finally, it offers an extended engagement of Cabral s critical theory and contributions to the Africana tradition of critical theory. Ultimately, Concepts of Cabralism chronicles and critiques, revisits and revises the black radical tradition with an eye toward the ways in which classical black radicalism informs, or should inform, not only contemporary black radicalism, African nationalism, and Pan-Africanism, but also contemporary efforts to create a new anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist, and anti-imperialist critical theory of contemporary society what has come to be called Africana critical theory

Abstract: There is an untold tale of Americans in Paris, a history of expatriation and immigration that parallels the story of the 'Lost Generation' expatriates who came to France for creative inspiration. This book argues that the 'other Americans in Paris' - American heiresses who married cash-poor French noblemen, wayward souls who got into trouble there but especially American businessmen living on the Right Bank of the Seine - are part of an important story of the early half of the 'American Century'.

Abstract: The most prominent story of 19th century German & French Jewry has focused on Jews' adoption of liberal middle-class values. Joskowicz points to an equally powerful aspect of modern Jewish history: the extent to which German and French Jews sought to become modern by criticising the anti-modern positions of the Catholic Church. From the moment in which Jews began to enter the fray of modern European politics, they found that Catholicism served as a convenient foil that helped them define what it meant to be a good citizen, to practice a respectable religion, and to have a healthy family life.

Abstract: Tourism and Social Change in Post-Socialist Zanzibar examines how Zanzibaris are struggling to move through the local landscape in the post-socialist era dominated by tourism. Using the theoretical framework of movement, this book highlights how Zanzibaris move and develop various dispositions to re-articulate their identities. This book also investigates how notions of ustaarabu, a word expressing "civilization" in Zanzibar, are being re-conceptualized and shaped by emerging forces of globalization, secularism, and mass consumption.

Abstract: This text highlights the importance of language in the social theory, epistemology, and aesthetics of the Enlightenment. It argues that awareness of the historicity and linguistic rootedness of all forms of life was a mainstream Enlightenment notion rather than a feature of the so-called 'Counter-Enlightenment'.

Abstract: America is best described by values of independence, freedom, and liberty. These values led our founding leaders to undertake revolution. America is American because being Americans each of us assimilates from birth these ideals and values. Americans intuitively assume that they have rights that no one-not their bosses or even government can take away. They see themselves as free enough to choose the kind of life they will live and able to move from where they are to anyplace else-both literally and metaphysically. 〈s

Abstract: France, which has the largest Muslim minority community in Europe, has been in the news in recent years because of perceptions that Muslims have not integrated into French society. This book explores the roots of these debates through an examination of the history of social welfare programs for Algerian migrants from the end of World War II until Algeria gained independence in 1962.

Abstract: In Agency of the Enslaved: Jamaica and the Culture of Freedom in the Atlantic World, D.A. Dunkley challenges the notion that enslavement fostered the culture of freedom in the former colonies of Western Europe in the Americas. Dunkley explores the importance of the agency displayed by enslaved people and argues that this formed the real basis of the culture of freedom in the Atlantic societies. These struggles were not for freedom, but for the acknowledgment of the freedom that enslaved people knew was already theirs. This view inspired their attempts to undermine the slave system that the Bri...

Abstract: Despite the verdict of the Cultural Revolution as a disaster for China, a number of scholars have called for re-examining socialist science under Mao's aegis. Western observers once found much to admire in Chairman Mao's mass science, with its origins in the May Fourth era. This collection represents diverse viewpoints on social and scientific enterprises of that era, probing medicine, the space program and even the one-child policy as direct outcomes of earlier Maoist science.

Abstract: Branded Bodies, Rhetoric, and the Neoliberal Nation-State, by Dr. Jennifer Wingard, explores how neoliberal economics has affected the rhetoric of the media and politics, and how in very direct, material ways it harms the bodies of some of the United States' most vulnerable occupants. Wingard explains how the state uses certain bodies that will never be accepted as citizens as an underclass in service of capital, and explores how those underclassed "bodies" are identified through branding. By showing how brands are assembled to create affective threats, this book articulates how dangerous the ...

Abstract: Race and Sex across the French Atlantic is a critical reconceptualization of the contributions of France and the French-speaking world to race relations in the continental United States. Radically re-evaluating the work of French and Francophone cultural icons such as Jean Genet, Aime Cesaire, Frantz Fanon and Dany Laferriere, this book makes use of untapped historical archival records that link these writers to important African-American political activists and intellectuals such as Lorraine Hansberry, James Baldwin and the Black Panthers, and even to the white American writer Norman Mailer.

Abstract: The aim of this book is to reconstruct and understand the revolutionary Bolivarian ideology in Chavez's movement through a historical analysis of its ideological principles and revolutionary scholastic institutions. Differing from many journalistic publications about Chavez, this book uncovers the deep social dynamics of Venezuelan politics using a strict empirical analysis. This book presents an original model for researching the ideologies behind Latin American political movements.

Abstract: Navigating Power: Cross-Cultural Competence in Navajoland by Gelaye Debebe uses data of an inter-organizational relationship between a Navajo and Anglo organization to show how concerns about political inequality trump cultural differences. Debebe examines how interactions among individuals representing culturally dissimilar and politically unequal groups impact task coordination in organizational settings. While past research has emphasized how cultural differences affect the course of interactions, this book focuses on the impact of...

Abstract: Peacebuilding with Women in Ukraine: Using Narrative to Envision a Common Future, by Maureen P. Flaherty, explores the process and outcome of a participatory action study that invited women from two diverse areas of a divided Ukraine to share previously untold personal stories and visions for themselves, their families, and Ukraine. The study itself provides a model for emancipatory social action while the women's stories introduce the reader to the history and building of a country that has most often had its history written for it. This text is an essential telling of lost histories of women...

Abstract: This book explores some of the less understood research considerations involved in studying religious populations with a missionary imperative. The essays encompass ethnographic fieldwork in Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, and other populations, addressing such topics as the fluidity of the anthropologist's own religious identity, objectivity versus subjectivity, the issue of reflexivity in ethnography, and the multi-positionality of the researcher.

Abstract: This study takes a new look at the 'spatial turn' in French cultural and critical theory since 1968. The author examines how Henri Lefebvre, Michel de Certeau, Jean Baudrillard, Marc Auge, Paul Virilio, Bruno Latour and Etienne Balibar reconsider the experience of space in the midst of considerable political and economic turmoil. The book considers why French critical theorists turned away from questions of time and looked instead toward questions of space. It asks what writing about space can tell us about life in late capitalism.

Abstract: In Working Class Heroes, David Simonelli explores the influence of rock and roll on British society in the 1960s and 70s. At a time when social distinctions were becoming harder to measure, rock musicians appeared to embody the mythical qualities of the idealized working class by perpetuating the image of rebellious, irreverent, and authentic musicians.

Contributors examine their own efforts in order to provide alternate models for understanding, assessing, and enacting university/community writing projects that, for a range of reasons, fall outside of traditional practice.

This hitherto untold story highlights the crisis in global pacifism precipitated by World War I. Never before had the quest for international peace seemed more promising; never since, in the wake of World War II, the Cold War, and the "War on Terror", has it seemed more impossible. Abstract: Designed for classroom use and nonspecialist readers, this collection brings together some of the most influential texts ever written about Latin America's middle class. Part One covers key debates in the 1950s and 1960s, when academics and policy-makers questioned whether Latin America's emerging "middle sectors" would foster democracy, development, and stability. Case studies in Part Two show how those older questions are both answered and challenged by today's social and cultural historical approaches.

Abstract: The innovative characteristic of the book lies in its tackling the topic of individualism from the original point of view of a theory of passions. It underlines the importance of the problem of the passions both in forming individual identity and building the social bond. It proposes to contrast the pathological effects of egoistical passions (acquisitive passion and passion of the Self), which are dominant in modernity, with empathetic and solidaristic passions, exemplified in the phenomenon of the gift.

Abstract: The Meaning of Gay traces the conflicts among San Francisco's gay men and with the dominant society, describing the broad range of meanings they came to ascribe onto 'gayness' between 1962 and 1972. Combining historical method, symbolic interaction, and the concerns of John Dewey's pragmatism, the book explains why gay men created the meanings they did and challenges the prevailing view that the 1960s was merely the transformation of an assimilationist gay politic into a radical one.

Graham argues that political philosophy cannot fully understand race-related injustice without shifting its focus away from distributive inequities between whites and nonwhites and toward white supremacy, the unfair power relationships that allow whites to dominate and oppress nonwhites. Graham's analysis of the racial politics of police violence and public education in Omaha, Nebraska, vividly illustrates why the pursuit of racial justice in the United States must move beyond redistribution.

Abstract: This provocative ethnography reveals how pervasive color-blind ideology remains even among pro-diversity liberals active in shaping racially diverse communities, as well as its result: the unintentional re-creation of a white habitus in a racially diverse community. The book also explores the contours of white racial identity and the concrete links between racial discourse, ideology, and social action in the contemporary United States

Abstract: A common thread in this book is the depiction of the African diasporas not only as a cultural epiphenomena (or interlocking communities), but also as a process characterized by identity transformations, lived experiences and realities, including the capturing of the historical trends that are acted and played out in multiple social domains. The heart of the diaspora domain is the cultural communities which serve at the fulcrum or the center of action exemplifying the vibrant nature and the continuities inherent in the formation of the diaspora.

Abstract: Wealth, Whiteness, and the Matrix of Privilege reports on interviews with members of exclusive country clubs in the Northeast. The club members explain their exclusive and sometimes sexist practices. Their talk both relies on and reproduces popular discourse. The author shows how club members end up justifying and maintaining their class, race, and gender privileges.

Abstract: Focusing upon the experiences of ethnoracial minorities, particularly African Americans and Mexican immigrants, in Austin, Texas, during the first three decades of the twentieth century, this book sheds new light on the issues of migration, proletarianization, marginalization, adaptation, identity, and community. As well as providing a textured depiction of minority group responses to life in a racially-stratified society, it offers a ground-breaking exploration of the ambivalent relationship between blacks and Latinos in modern America. 〈/span
