Abstract: "Taking a fresh look at the first two centuries of French colonialism in the Americas, this book answers the long-standing question of how and how well indigenous Americans and the Europeans who arrived on their shores communicated with each other. French explorers and colonists in the sixteenth century noticed that indigenous peoples from Brazil to Canada used signs to communicate. The French, in response, quickly embraced the nonverbal as a means to overcome cultural and language barriers. Céline Carayon's close examination of their accounts enables her to recover these sophisticated native practices of embodied expressions" --

Abstract: People as things: The slave trade -- Sinews of empire: Africans and the making of American empires -- Slave defiance -- The slave owners' nightmare: Haiti -- The Friends of Black Freedom -- Freeing Britain's slaves -- The fall of US slavery -- The end of slavery in the Spanish empire -- The last to go: Brazil -- Abolition in the wider world -- Slavery in the modern age -- Conclusion.
Abstract: "The critically acclaimed author of Sugar explains one of the major shifts in Western history in the past five centuries--the end of the slave empires. In this timely and readable new work, Walvin focuses not on abolitionism or the brutality and suffering of slavery, but on the resistance of the enslaved themselves--from sabotage and absconding to full-blown uprisings--and its impact in overthrowing slavery. He also looks that whole Atlantic world, including the Spanish Empire and Brazil, all of which revolved around slavery. In the three centuries following Columbus's landfall in the Americas, slavery became a critical institution across swathes of both North and South America. It saw twelve million Africans forced onto slave ships, and had seismic consequences for Africa while leading to the transformation of the Americas and to the material enrichment of the Western world. It was also largely unquestioned. Yet within a mere seventy-five years, slavery had vanished from the Americas: it declined, collapsed and was destroyed by a complexity of forces that, to this day, remains disputed, but there is no doubting that it was in large part defeated by those it had enslaved. Slavery itself came in many shapes and sizes. It is perhaps best remembered on the plantations of the American south, but slavery varied enormously from one crop to another: sugar, tobacco, rice, coffee, cotton. And there was in addition myriad tasks for the enslaved to do, from shipboard and dockside labor, from factories to the frontier, through to domestic labor and child-care duties. Slavery was, then, both ubiquitous and varied. But if all these millions of diverse, enslaved people had one thing in common it was a universal detestation of their bondage. Most of these enslaved peoples did not live to see freedom. But an old freed man or woman in Cuba or Brazil in the 1880s would have lived through its destruction clean across the Americas. The collapse of slavery and the triumph of black freedom constitutes an extraordinary historical upheaval, one which still resonates throughout the world today."--

Abstract: "For millennia, urban centers were pivots of power and trade that ruled and linked rural majorities. After 1950, explosive urbanization led to unprecedented urban majorities. That transformation--inextricably tied to rising globalization--changed almost everything for nearly everybody. New World Cities looks at six metropolises during the twentieth century--Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Montreal, Los Angeles, and Houston--exploring the challenges of explosive urbanization and the gains and limits of popular politics"--

Abstract: "This book will tell of struggles and contributions of people who have made Los Angeles the largest Korean city outside of Seoul and contributed significantly to New York and northern New Jersey, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston and other cities across the country. It will tell of their Korean culture and history and as importantly how they have adapted to the American culture of E Pluribus Unum, one from many, a new, diverse concept of a nation. Moreover, as it tells of Korean American history, this book will tell also of Los Angeles' emergence as capital of the Asia Pacific region, a new western perspective for the United States. Korean Americans today, at more than 1.7 million across the U.S., are a relatively small group compared to new Americans from China, the Philippines and India. But with energy and drive, Korean Americans are building landmarks in New York as well as L.A., lobbying for causes in Washington and founding businesses, heading universities and hospitals and holding public office in all parts of the U.S. They are working for affordable housing and family services through more than 7,000 Korean churches across the country. At a time of critical difference and debate about immigration, the Koreans demonstrate the promise of the American mosaic, which remains a beacon to the world."--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "Today middle class consumers in the Americas drive the transatlantic trade in Italian foods associated with refined consumption--award-winning regional wines, herb infused olive oils, heirloom San Marzano canned tomatoes, syrupy balsamic vinegars, and pungent slabs of aged parmigiano cheese. At the same time, pizza and pasta are considered typical fare in the U.S. and Argentina. Both developments reflect major changes since the late 19th century when Italy was associated with less luxurious items, mainly mass proletariat migrants, food staple exports, and an unpalatable, garlic-saturated cuisine. During this time of mass labor migration, it was migrant demand for homeland tastes that opened up and sustained transnational trade routes in Italian food items, routes that linked Italians in migrant marketplaces in New York, Buenos Aires, and other cities of the Americas to Italy and to each other. This historical journey from labor migrants to middle-class consumers is a story about international migrants, about the foods and consumption habits that traveled with them, and about how the presence of both mobile people and products ultimately transformed the identities and consumer practices of migrants and non-migrants alike. This book examines how connections between Italian people and products in all three countries influenced migrants' consumer experiences during the age of mass migration"
Abstract: Manly markets in le Due Americhe, 1880-1914 -- Making race and trade policies in migrant marketplaces, 1880-1915 -- Tipo Italiano: the production and sale of Italian-style goods, 1880-1915 -- "Pro patria" : the normalization of migrant consumption around women during World War I -- Reorienting migrant marketplaces in le Due Americhe during the interwar years -- Fascism and the competition for migrant consumers, 1922-1940.

Abstract: "It's not your father's working class anymore. It's more female, more diverse racially, and it doesn't wear Carhartt's and a hard hat anymore. Sleeping Giant is the first major examination of this dynamic and increasingly activist class and the role it will play in our political and economic future. What does "working class" mean in today's America? Today's workers don't just man the assembly lines. They watch our children and aging parents, park our cars, screen our luggage, clean our offices and hotel rooms, cook our take-out meals and stock our store shelves. And they are blacker, browner, and more female than the old working class. They are not as organized, in terms of their unions and political clout, but they are demographically powerful and are awakening to that power. The new working class is indeed a "sleeping giant," and Tamara Draut will blend up-close-and-personal individual narratives with historical background and sophisticated analysis to explain how they are about to change America for the better"--

The new working class is indeed a "sleeping giant," and Tamara Draut will blend up-close-and-personal individual narratives with historical background and sophisticated analysis to explain how they are about to change America for the better"--

Abstract: "The period between 1776-1826 signalled a major change in how Jewish identity was understood both by Jews and non-Jews throughout the Americas. Jews in the Americas, 1776-1826 brings this world of change to life by uniting important out-of-print primary sources on early American Jewish life with rare archival materials that can currently be found only in special collections in Europe, England, the United States, and the Caribbean"--

Abstract: "Brazil, like several countries in Africa, has become a major destination for African American tourists seeking the cultural roots of the black Atlantic diaspora. Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic research as well as textual, visual, and archival sources, Patricia de Santana Pinho investigates African American roots tourism, a complex, poignant kind of travel that provides profound personal and collective meaning for those searching for black identity and heritage. It also provides, as Pinho's interviews with Brazilian tour guides, state officials, and Afro-Brazilian activists reveal, economic and political rewards that support a structured industry"--

Abstract: "A comprehensive new survey tracing the global history of urbanism and urban design from the industrial revolution to the present. Written with an international perspective that encourages cross-cultural comparisons, leading architectural and urban historian Eric Mumford presents a comprehensive survey of urbanism and urban design since the industrial revolution. Beginning in the second half of the 19th century, technical, social, and economic developments set cities and the world's population on a course of massive expansion. Mumford recounts how key figures in design responded to these changing circumstances with both practicable proposals and theoretical frameworks, ultimately creating what are now mainstream ideas about how urban environments should be designed, as well as creating the field called "urbanism." He then traces the complex outcomes of approaches that emerged in European, American, and Asian cities. This erudite and insightful book addresses the modernization of the traditional city, including mass transit and sanitary sewer systems, building legislation, and model tenement and regional planning approaches. It also examines the urban design concepts of groups such as CIAM (International Congresses of Modern Architecture) and Team 10, and their adherents and critics, including those of the Congress for the New Urbanism, as well as efforts toward ecological urbanism. Highlighting built as well as unbuilt projects, Mumford offers a sweeping guide to the history of designers' efforts to shape cities."--

Abstract: Since the June 1967 war, over 60,000 Jewish-Americans have settled in the occupied territories. Comprising 15 percent of the Israeli settler enterprise today, they have established major settlements, revolutionized the public relations of the movement and its engagement with the international community, and committed shocking acts of settler terrorism. City on a Hilltop unsettles stereotypes about Jewish-American settlers. It shatters the myth that they were messianic zealots, finding instead a group of young, highly-educated American Jews who were politically active in 1960s social movements and the Democratic Party prior to their immigration to Israel. Their generation didn't abandon their heritage when they settled over the Green Line... rather they saw a historical opportunity to apply their liberal values to a new kind of "city on a hilltop." The story of Jewish-American settlers personifies the clash between liberal values and political realities at the heart of the crisis of liberal Zionism today....

Abstract: The key role played by indentured servants in the settlement and development of the English colonies in the West Indies and the North American mainland in the first century of English colonisation has been overshadowed by interest in the much larger later trade in African slaves. 'There is Great Want of Servants' provides the first full examination of the English trade in indentured servants, which delivered the majority of an estimated 457,000 white people who migrated to the American colonies before 1720. English colonisation intended to create 'new Englands out of England' - to enlarge trade and plantation - but settlement required people to work the land. Labour had to be transported over 4,000 miles of threatening ocean in a new system of indentured servitude, in which people paid for their transportation and keep, with four years of unpaid service for adults, and more for children and adolescents. The system was not benign, neither in the sugar plantations of the West Indies and the tobacco plantations of Maryland and Virginia, nor at the centre of the trade in London and in other ports such as Bristol.--Dust jacket

Abstract: 'Colonial frontiers' explores the formation, structure and maintenance of boundaries and frontiers in settler colonies. Drawing on the work of anthropologists, historians, archaeologists and post-colonial theorists, the authors in this fascinating collection explore the importance of cross-cultural interactions in the settler colonies of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and America. Taking key historical moments to illuminate the formation of new boundaries and the interaction between the settler societies and the indigenous groups, this book raises many important questions about how the empire worked 'on the ground'. Importantly, the collection attempts to theorise the indigenous experience. As we move towards globalisation, borders and boundaries have begun to fall away. This book reminds us that not long ago the frontiers and boundaries were the key sites for cross-cultural interaction. This collection, which includes chapters by John K. Noyes, Nigel Penn, Kay Schaffer and Ian McNiven, is broad in scope and presents an exciting new approach to the issues surrounding group interaction in colonial settings. Students and academics, from backgrounds such as imperial history, anthropology and post-colonial studies, will find this collection extremely valuable

Abstract: "Why does racial equality continue to elude African Americans even after the election of a black president? Liberals blame white racism while conservatives blame black behavior. Both define the race problem in socioeconomic terms, mainly citing jobs, education, and policing. Roy Brooks, a distinguished legal scholar, argues that the reality is more complex. He defines the race problem African Americans face today as a three-headed hydra involving socioeconomic, judicial, and cultural conditions. Focusing on law and culture, Brooks defines the problem largely as racial subordination: 'the act of impeding racial progress in pursuit of nonracist interests.' Racial subordination is little understood and under acknowledged, yet it produces devastating and even deadly racial consequences that affect both poor and socioeconomically successful African Americans. Brooks addresses a serious problem, in many ways more dangerous than overt racism, and offers a well reasoned solution that draws upon the strongest virtues America has exhibited to the world"--Book jacket

Abstract: "A panoramic, eye-opening history of the vast migration of Eastern Europeans to the West by a recent winner of a MacArthur Fellowship. Between 1846 and 1940, more than 50 million Europeans moved to the Americas, irrevocably changing both their new lands and the ones they left behind. Their immigration fostered an idea of the 'land of the free,' and yet more than a third returned home again. In a groundbreaking study, Tara Zahra brilliantly explores the deeper story of this unprecedented movement of people. As villages emptied, some blamed traffickers in human labor, targeting Jewish emigration agents. Others saw opportunity: to seed colonies of migrants like the Polish community in Argentina, or to gain economic advantage from an inflow of foreign currency, or to reshape their populations by encouraging the emigration of minorities. These precedents would shape the Holocaust, the closing of the Iron Curtain, and tragedies of ethnic cleansing, while also forming notions of social solidarity, human rights, and freedom...whether it be the freedom to move or the freedom to stay home"...Provided by publisher

Abstract: "This book introduces and explores Asian communities in the U.S., the Caribbean, and Latin America through literary, historical, and theoretical frameworks by bringing together the multiple cultural perspectives of an emerging field of study: the transnational field of Asians in the Americas. The new scholarship of these authors addresses familial, historical, and literary ties to Asia, while also introducing the contributions of Asians in the Americas in an interdisciplinary framework, easily accessible to students and scholars and amendable for course adoption. The subjects of these essays emphasize community by discussing identity, religion, culture, public health, business, language, film, and literature. They imagine the homeland and the possibilities that life in the country of residence holds. This volume seeks to understand the historically collapsed notion of Asians in the Americas, wherein Asian identity has been strategically invoked within rigid confines for political and ideological perspectives. Through a comparative framework, Imagining Asia in the Americas moves past research models that consider the immigrant as a static subject that cuts his ties with the homeland and immerses himself in a new identity specifically linked to the host country. Instead, they introduce new approaches to examine the intersections of the past and present in community formation as it is linked to the homeland as well as the resident country"...Provided by publisher

Abstract: This collection of essays on popular culture and politics in the Americas presents the study of ethnographic and historical data from different countries: Canada, United States, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. Each chapter brings to light a distinct focus on the way in which popular cultural practices evolve in the context of contemporary globalization. Accordingly, this book aims to improve our understanding of the way in which subordinate groups participate in the process of state building and in the reproduction (or rejection) of the major macroeconomic and cultural processes shaping contemporary societies

Abstract: The function of anti-Americanism - this study analyzes anti-American utterances in everyday communication, and reveals their function for nationalist constructions of identity in combination with racism and anti-Semitism.

Abstract: 〈I〉Slavery Hinterland〈/I〉 explores a neglected aspect of transatlantic slavery: the implication of a continental European hinterland. It focuses on historical actors in territories that were not directly involved in the traffic in Africans but linked in various ways with the transatlantic slave business, the plantation economies that it fed and the consequences of its abolition. The volume unearths material entanglements of the Continental and Atlantic economies and also proposes a new agenda for the historical study of the relationship between business and morality. Contributors from the US,Britain and continental Europe examine the ways in which the slave economy touched on individual lives and economic developments in German-speaking Europe, Switzerland, Denmark and Italy. They reveal how these 'hinterlands' served as suppliers of investment, labour and trade goods for the slave trade and of materials for the plantation economies, and how involvement in trade networks contributed in turn to key economic developments in the 'hinterlands'. The chapters range in time from the first, short-lived attempt at establishing a German slave-trading operation in the 1680s to the involvement of textile manufacturers in transatlantic trade in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. A key theme of the volume is the question of conscience, or awareness of being morally implicated in an immoral enterprise. Evidence for subjective understandings of the moral challenge of slavery is found in individual actions and statements and also in post-abolition colonisation and missionary projects. FELIX BRAHM is Research Fellow at the German Historical Institute in London.〈BR〉〈BR〉 EVE ROSENHAFT is Professor of German Historical Studies, University of Liverpool.CONTRIBUTORS: Felix Brahm, Peter Haenger, Catherine Hall, Daniel P. Abstract: "Giants, cannibals and other monsters were a regular feature of Renaissance illustrated maps, inhabiting the Americas alongside other indigenous peoples. In a new approach to views of distant peoples, Surekha Davies analyzes this archive alongside prints, costume books and geographical writing. Using sources from Iberia, France, the German lands, the Low Countries, Italy and England, Davies argues that mapmakers and viewers saw these maps as careful syntheses that enabled viewers to compare different peoples. In an age when scholars, missionaries, native peoples and colonial officials debated whether New World inhabitants could - or should - be converted or enslaved, maps were uniquely suited for assessing the impact of environment on bodies and temperaments. Through innovative interdisciplinary methods connecting the European Renaissance to the Atlantic world, Davies uses new sources and questions to explore science as a visual pursuit, revealing how debates about the relationship between humans and monstrous peoples challenged colonial expansion"--

Abstract: By means of analyses of singers from the genres of vaudeville, gospel, blues, American popular song, musical, jazz, country, folk, rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll and soul, this book gives impetus to an engagement with popular music that combines Cultural Studies with Musicology. In a detailed and nuanced way, the essays describe how vocal means of expression develop, and how they have influenced each other beyond genre boundaries, and how they shape and reflect images, cultural stereotypes and collective identities
