    Abstract: Solidarität - spätestens seit der Corona-Pandemie ist sie auch im Kulturbetrieb in aller Munde. Doch was steckt hinter diesem diskursiven Aufschwung? Alexandra Manske legt eine wegweisende empirische Studie über Arbeit und Politik im Kulturbetrieb vor. Exemplarisch untersucht sie die arbeitspolitischen Spiele in den darstellenden Künsten. Ihre soziologischen Analysen im Theaterbereich und der freien Szene zeigen, dass die Interessenvertretung im Kulturbetrieb an Legitimation gewonnen hat und dies mit neuen, flexiblen Mustern von Solidarität einher geht.     Abstract: Die christliche Mission war in mehrfacher Hinsicht ein geschlechterspezifisches Unternehmen, in dem Frauen und Männern klar definierte Rollen und Räume zugewiesen waren. Doch das fest umrissene Geschlechterbild stieß in der Praxis an Grenzen. So forderte die Bevölkerung in Namibia und Sumatra die Vorstellungen heraus und erzwang Veränderungen. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele entfaltet Dorothee Rempfer die Dynamiken von Aneignung und Ablehnung religiös fundierter Geschlechterverhältnisse. Damit liefert sie wichtige Erkenntnisse zu Handlungsspielräumen und Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten europäischer und nichteuropäischer Akteur*innen im Kontext von Gender und Kolonialismus

    Abstract: Im 21. Jahrhundert sehen die Verfassungen zahlreicher lateinamerikanischer Staaten indigene Rechte auf territoriale Autonomie vor. Während viele Studien im Forschungsfeld diese Rechte vorwiegend als Anerkennung bestehender indigener Organisationsformen interpretieren, weist Michael Fackler auf den Veränderungsdruck hin, den staatliche Autonomievorstellungen beinhalten. Zu diesem Zweck untersucht er die Umsetzung indigener Autonomierechte in Bolivien. Seine detaillierte Ethnographie fokussiert auf Spannungen und Konflikte in der Aneignung rechtlicher Normsetzungen durch die lokale indigene Bevölkerung und legt die Vielschichtigkeit der Konstruktion staatlich-sanktionierter Autonomie offen

    Abstract: Wenn Übersetzungszwänge zwischen sozialen Sinnhorizonten den Kardinaleffekt sozialer Differenzierung bilden, kann eine entsprechende Soziologie multipler Differenzierung ihren eigenen Realitätsbezug, wie den jedes anderen Sinnzusammenhanges, nur als eine Art »indirekter Referenz« ausweisen.Joachim Renns Analyse geht einen medientheoretischen Umweg: Sie konzentriert sich zunächst auf die Bedeutung verschiedener Kommunikationsmedien für die eigenlogische Formatierung möglicher Gegenstände der Bezugnahme und erst dann auf die Referenzansprüche der Soziologie selbst. Es zeigt sich: Diese pragmatistische Rekonstruktion einer medialen »Welt-Erschließung« wird - anders als der weit verbreitete Konstruktivismus - der realistischen Intuition einer Soziologie als empirischer Wissenschaft gerecht
    Abstract: When translation constraints between horizons of social meaning create the cardinal effect of social distinction, a pertinent sociology of multiple distinction can disclose its own reference to reality, such as that of any other context, only as a kind of »indirect reference«. Joachim Renn's analysis takes a media-theory detour: Initially it focuses on the meaning of different communication media for the formation of potential objects of reference that is logical in itself, and then it focuses on the reference claims of sociology itself. That shows: This pragmatic reconstruction of a medial »indexing of the world« does - unlike the widely-spread constructivism - justice to the realistic intuition of sociology as an empirical science

    Abstract: Gardening together, becoming subsistent, shaping the city, living art and at the same time reflecting on the utopian sense or nonsense of this activity that was the motto of the neighbourhood garden "Keimzelle" (engl. nucleus) (2011-2019) in Hamburg. In this context, the contributors to the volume provide a strong theoretical basis as well as an artistically vivid examination of the transformative potential of DIY urban spaces. Accompanied by a skilled discourse community, the artistic approach makes a multidimensional penetration of transformative practice tangible.     Abstract: Gemeinsam gärtnern, subsistent werden, Stadt gestalten, Kunst leben und zugleich über den utopischen Sinn oder Unsinn dieses Tuns nachdenken - das war die Devise des Nachbarschaftsgartens »Keimzelle« (2011-2019) in Hamburg. Julia Elven schlägt daher eine praxistheoretische Wandelforschung vor, die gesellschaftliche Transformationen auf Basis ihres konkreten praktischen Geschehens analysierbar macht. Sozialer Wandel kommt dann als dezentraler, multidirektionaler, kontingenter Prozess in den Blick, der unterschiedlichen Logiken zugleich folgt. Denn nicht in der Suche nach dem allgemeinen rationalen Prinzip hinter sozialen Dynamiken, sondern in der Rekonstruktion der Interferenzen divergierender Rationalitäten liegt der Schlüssel zum Verständnis sozialen Wandels.

Many studies have explored the English family in the 16th and 17th centuries, focusing on husbands and wives, parents and children. 'The Ties that Bind' explores in depth the other key dimension: the place of brothers and sisters in family life, and in society. Moralists urged mutual love and support between siblings, but recognized that sibling rivalry was a common and potent force. The widespread practice of primogeniture made England distinctive. The eldest son inherited most of the estate and with it, a moral obligation to advance the welfare of his brothers and sisters. 'The Ties that Bind' explores how this operated in practice, and shows how the resentment of younger brothers and sisters made sibling relationships a heated issue in this period, in family life, in print, and also on the stage

    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Evolution, Biology, and Society explores a growing area within sociology: research that uses theory and/or methods from biology. The essays in this handbook integrate current research from all strands of this new and developing area. The first section of this book has essays that address the history of the use of method and theory from biology in the social sciences; the second section has papers on evolutionary approaches to social psychology; the third section has chapters describing research on the interaction of genes (and other biochemicals such as hormones) and environmental contexts on a variety of outcomes of sociological interest; and the fourth section includes papers that apply evolutionary theory to areas of traditional concern to sociologists-including the family, fertility, sex and gender, religion, crime, and race and ethnic relations.

    Abstract: What is the public value of poetry? How do poets envisage their own role and function within society? How do we? Do poets seek to shape public opinion and behavior? Should they? Or do they offer alternatives--perhaps sacred alternatives--to political and religious ideologies? Are they what Shelley in 1821 called 'the unacknowledged legislators of the World'? And what might that mean? During the decades immediately preceding the Revolution of 1789 the status of contemporary poetry in France was at its lowest ebb. At the same time the perceived power of the writer to influence public events reached a high-water mark with Voltaire's triumphant return to Paris in 1778. In the course of the next century French poetry enjoyed an extraordinary renaissance and flowering, perhaps its greatest. But what of the poet's public influence? In 1881 the people of Paris processed for six hours past the home of Victor Hugo on the occasion of his 79th birthday, and in 1885 an estimated two million people witnessed his state funeral. But who or what were they acknowledging? Poetry or republicanism? Or perhaps their own power? For with each Revolution that passed--1789, 1830, 1848--French poets themselves felt increasingly marginalized. This study addresses the first part of this story and focuses on the role and function of the poet during the so-called Romantic Period. Beginning with an account of the literary climate in pre-revolutionary France it then maps the changes in that climate wrought by the events of the 1789 Revolution. It describes the new politico-literary agendas set by Chateaubriand and others on the monarchist Right, and by Stael and others on the liberal Left. Against this background it then analyzes in detail the poetic output and public exploits of the three major French poets of the period: Lamartine, Hugo, and Vigny. The Romantic figure of the poet as prophet and magus is habitually dismissed as a cliche. But by focusing on the role of the poet as lawgiver this book reveals the rich and complex terms in which the public function of poetry was debated in post-revolutionary France--and how amidst the centenary celebrations of 1889, as Romanticism gave way to Symbolism, the poet as lawgiver continued to play a central part in that debate.

    Abstract: "The sixteenth-century changes wrought by expansion of the Spanish empire into Peru shaped the ways of being a family in colonial Peru. Even as migration, race mixture, and transculturation took place, family members fulfilled obligations to one another by adapting custom to a changing world. Family began to shift when, from the moment of their arrival in 1532, Spaniards were joined with elite indigenous women in political marriage-like alliances. Almost immediately, a generation of mestizos was born that challenged the hierarchies of colonial society. In response, the Spanish Crown began to promote the marriage of these men and the travel of Spanish women to Peru to promote good customs and even serve as surrogate parents. Other reactions came from wives in Spain who, abandoned by husbands, sought assistance to fulfill family duties. For indigenous families, the pressures of colonialism prompted migration to cities. By mid-century, the increase of Spanish migration to Peru changed the social landscape, but did not halt mixed-race marriages. The book posits that late sixteenth-century cities, specifically Lima and Arequipa, were host to indigenous and Spanish families but also to numerous 'blended' families borne of a process of mestizaje. In its final chapter, the legacies for the next generation reveal how Spanish fathers sometimes challenged law with custom and sentiment to establish inheritance plans for their children.     Abstract: From the sports trend of parkour, via the Old Testament, up to the Berlin squatting scene - the different contributions to this volume take up the challenge of rethinking questions about the entanglement of space and gender. Predominant interpretations of current societal phenomena as well as established research topics are examined in order to trace gendered power structures. Thus, resistant moves/tricks (Maschen) and powerful games/acts (Muster) are found in a wide range of topics reaching from observations of performative acts and discourse structures all the way to medial treatments.     Abstract: From the mid-1920s, the dance hall occupied a pivotal place in the culture of working- and lower-middle-class communities in Britain - a place rivalled only by the cinema and eventually to eclipse even that institution in popularity. 'Going to the palais' examines the history of this vital social and cultural institution, exploring the dances, dancers, and dance venues that were at the heart of one of twentieth-century Britain's most significant leisure activities. 'Going to the palais' has several key focuses. First, it explores the expansion of the dance hall industry and the development of a 'mass audience' for dancing between 1918 and 1960. Second, the impact of these changes on individuals and communities is examined, with a particular concentration on working and lower-middle-class communities, and on young men and women. Third, the cultural impact of dancing and dance halls is explored. A key aspect of this debate is an examination of how Britain's dance culture held up against various standardizing processes (commercialization, Americanization, etc.) over the period, and whether we can see the emergence of a 'national' dance culture. Finally, the volume offers an assessment of wider reactions to dance halls and dancing in the period. 'Going to the palais' is concerned with the complex relationship between discourses of class, culture, gender, and national identity and how they overlap - how cultural change, itself a response to broader political, social, and economic developments, was helping to change notions of class, gender, and national identity

    Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Abstract: Wie und warum wurde Depression zur Volkskrankheit? Vor dem Hintergrund einer Ideengeschichte von Melancholie und Depression entwickelt Konstantin Ingenkamp dazu eine eigene, kulturwissenschaftlich informierte Perspektive, die sich sowohl gegen die immer stärkere Pathologisierung als auch gegen die verbreitete These wendet, dass psychische Erkrankungen immer weiter zunehmen.Stattdessen wird Depression als ein zur Conditio humana gehörender Gemütszustand beleuchtet, der sich als Kehrseite des »Positiven Denkens« in den protestantischen Erweckungsbewegungen des 19. Jahrhunderts ebenso wiederfinden lässt wie als Gegenbegriff zur »mentalen Gesundheit« während des Kalten Krieges. Erst mit dem Boom der Psychopharmaka in der zeitgenössischen »Gesundheitsgesellschaft«, so zeigt der Autor, wird die Depression zur Volkskrankheit.
    Abstract: How and why did depression become an epidemic disease? Based on a conceptual history of melancholy and depression, Konstantin Ingenkamp develops his own perspective, which is well-founded in cultural science. It is directed against the increasing pathologizing as well as against the wide-spread thesis that mental illnesses are constantly increasing.Instead, depression is viewed as a state of mind that is part of the human condition and that can be found as the opposite of »positive thinking« in protestant awakening movements of the 19th century, and also as a counter term of »mental health« during the cold war. Only with the boom of psychotropic drugs in the contemporary »health society« does depression become an epidemic disease, as the author shows.

    Abstract: Europa befindet sich in Bewegung und inszeniert sich zunehmend auf der Grundlage seiner Vielfalt. Im alltäglichen Umgang erweist sich dies allerdings als schwierig. Menschen erleben Europa mittlerweile als einen unüberschaubaren, zerfaserten und überfordernden Komplex. Es ist offenbar vor allem die Angst der europäischen Bevölkerung vor Fremden, aber auch die offensichtliche Unsicherheit politischer Akteure im Umgang mit Fremden, die zu Abwehrrhetoriken und Ausgrenzungen führen. Die Beiträge dieses Buches setzen sich mit dem Verhältnis Europas zu »seinen Fremden« sowie mit den Schwierigkeiten auseinander, kulturelle Vielfalt in einem durch Migrationsprozesse bewegten Europa zu gestalten.

    Abstract: Allmählich beginnt man zu erkennen, daß die moderne Wirkungsgeschichte des Islams wie kaum ein anderes Phänomen dazu beigetragen hat, die Grundlagen der westlichen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in Frage zu stellen. Die vorliegende Textsammlung beobachtet und analysiert diese Prozesse aus mehreren Perspektiven: Erstens nimmt sie die Rückwirkungen und Verunsicherungen in den Blick, die die moderne Beschäftigung mit dem Islam in bezug auf die »eigenen«, abendländischen »fundamentals«, die Wesenszüge des modernen Selbstverständnisses, auslöst. Zweitens widmet sich das Buch der Frage nach den Dynamiken und Richtungen der Globalisierung, die das Verhältnis von Islam und europäischer Moderne in Gang setzt. Drittens enthält das Buch einige Untersuchungen zu den sozialen Spannungen, die durch das Aufeinandertreffen von ideologisch politisiertem Islam und überkommener Alltagspraxis vor allem im ländlichen Ägypten entstehen. Dabei werden auch Fragen an die klassische deutsche Islamwissenschaft gestellt. Es wird diskutiert, inwieweit auf sie aufbauend die Probleme des Islams in der modernen, globalisierten Gesellschaft untersucht werden können und entsprechende Forschungsansätze entwickelt.

    Abstract: Freedom, Sen argues, is both the end and most efficient means of sustaining economic life and the key to securing the general welfare of the world's entire population. Releasing the idea of individual freedom from association with any particular historical, intellectual, political, or religious tradition, Sen clearly demonstrates its current applicability and possibilities. In the new global economy, where, despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps even the majority of people--he concludes, it is still possible to practically and optimistically restain a sense of social accountability
