    Abstract: Der Begriff des Widerspruchs umfasst sowohl Akte des Opponierens als auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Er ist somit fester Bestandteil gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Der Band vereint Beiträge zu politischen Karikaturen im 19. Jahrhundert, zum Kommunikationsverhalten von Nutzer:innen in den Sozialen Medien oder den widersprüchlichen Aspekten der Quantentheorie. Der Begriff Widerspruch kann sowohl eine private Unmutsäußerung als auch den rechtlich verankerten Einspruch bezeichnen, aber auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene werden solche Konflikte und Aushandlungsprozesse in Protesten sichtbar, wie jüngst den Anti-Corona-Demonstrationen, oder in Petitionen und Online-Kampagnen, wie #metoo oder #blacklivesmatter. Widersprüche sind feste Bestandteile gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die Autor:innen zeigen die vielen Facetten des Begriffs auf und beleuchten diese hinsichtlich ihrer Potenziale, medialen Ausprägungen und Wirkungsformen.

    Abstract: Barry Buzan proposes a new approach to making International Relations a truly global discipline that transcends both Eurocentrism and comparative civilisations. He narrates the story of humankind as a whole across three eras, using its material conditions and social structures to show how global society has evolved. Deploying the English School's idea of primary institutions and setting their story across three domains - interpolity, transnational and interhuman - this book conveys a living historical sense of the human story whilst avoiding the overabstraction of many social science grand theories. Buzan sharpens the familiar story of three main eras in human history with the novel idea that these eras are separated by turbulent periods of transition. This device enables a radical retelling of how modernity emerged from the late 18th century. He shows how the concept of 'global society' can build bridges connecting International Relations, Global Historical Sociology and Global/World History.

    Abstract: This volume brings together investigations from social scientists, philosophers, and legal scholars into the political dimensions of expertise. It is motivated by the sense that growing mistrust in experts represents a danger to democratic politics today, insofar as science and experts are integral to the checks and balances on which liberal democracies depend for their health and functioning. Steffen Mau zeigt, dass Grenzen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung von Anbeginn nicht offener gestaltet, sondern zu machtvollen Sortiermaschinen umgebaut wurden. Während ein kleiner Kreis Privilegierter heute nahezu überallhin reisen darf, bleibt die große Mehrheit der Weltbevölkerung weiterhin systematisch außen vor. Während die Mobilität von Menschen über Grenzen hinweg in den letzten Jahrzehnten stetig zunahm und Grenzen immer offener schienen, fand gleichzeitig eine in Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit unterschätzte Gegenentwicklung statt. Vielerorts ist es zu einer neuen Fortifizierung gekommen, zum Bau neuer abschreckender Mauern und militarisierter Grenzübergänge. Grenzen wurden zudem immer selektiver und - unterstützt durch die Digitalisierung - zu Smart Borders aufgerüstet. Und die Grenzkontrolle hat sich räumlich massiv ausgedehnt, ja ist zu einer globalen Unternehmung geworden, die sich vom Territorium ablöst. Der Soziologe Steffen Mau analysiert, auf welche Weise und mit welchen Mitteln die neuen Sortiermaschinen Mobilität und Immobilität zugleich schaffen: Für erwünschte Reisende sollen sich Grenzen wie Kaufhaustüren öffnen, für andere sollen sie fester denn je verschlossen bleiben. Nirgends tritt das Janusgesicht der Globalisierung deutlicher zutage als an den Grenzen des 21. Jahrhunderts.     Abstract: The volume In Need of a Master: Politics, Theology, and Radical Democracy discusses how our so-called "postmodern age" of widespread ideological critique paves the way for reactionary and conservative political movements. At center stage is the question of whether these movements can and must be – contrary to widespread beliefs among liberal elites – interpreted both as a symptom of a political awakening in the horizon of political theology in our era of immanence, as well as perhaps the perilous end of democracy as we know it. The book brings to the fore political theology as the hidden agenda of politics and presents at the same time Christian and Jewish theological traditions as an antidote to a global empire with its often unacknowledged rule of immanence.

    Abstract: Zivilgesellschaft ist ein viel benutztes Schlagwort, sowohl in Medien und Politik als auch in den Sozialwissenschaften. Der Begriff bezeichnet nichtstaatliche Organisationen wie Verbände, Vereine, soziale Bewegungen, Stiftungen, Initiativen - kurz, alle Aktivitäten von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern, die unsere heutigen Demokratien mitgestalten. Auf der normativen Ebene zählen das öffentliche Gespräch und Werte wie Toleranz und Gewaltfreiheit zur Zivilgesellschaft. Frank Adloff rekonstruiert zunächst die wechselhafte Geschichte des Begriffs, die schon mit Aristoteles begann, über das Mittelalter bis in die Neuzeit und die Moderne reicht und Denker wie Locke, Hegel, Tocqueville, Gramsci, Dewey, Arendt, Etzioni, Dahrendorf oder Habermas einschließt. Anschließend beschreibt er historische Entwicklungslinien und Beispiele der deutschen Zivilgesellschaft - als gesellschaftlicher und öffentlicher Raum von freiwilligen und politischen Assoziationen - vom 19. Jahrhundert bis heute. Am Ende stellt Adloff nationenübergreifende Formen von Zivilgesellschaft vor und zeigt, dass diese im Zeitalter der Globalisierung unerlässlich sind.

    Abstract: Ostdeutsche werden im öffentlichen Diskurs gerne als Opfer der deutschen Einheit stilisiert. Tatsächlich haben sie sich von der friedlichen Revolution bis heute als mächtige politische Akteur*innen erwiesen. Detlef Pollack analysiert aus wissenschaftlicher Perspektive und mithilfe seiner persönlichen Erfahrungen als Zeitzeuge und Teilnehmer, wie sich dies bereits im revolutionären Umbruch von 1989 erkennen lässt. Denn die entscheidenden Dynamiken gingen nicht, wie vielfach behauptet, von einer kleinen Schar Oppositioneller aus, sondern von der breiten Bevölkerung selbst. Diese Macht des Volkes zeigt sich bis heute, wo die ostdeutsche Bevölkerung durch ihr Wahlverhalten und nicht zuletzt auch durch ihren Opferdiskurs wiederum Berücksichtigung einklagt. Am ostdeutschen Protestverhalten lässt sich begreifen, wie sich eine Bevölkerung zum Volk konstituiert - unter den Bedingungen von Diktatur und Demokratie.

    Abstract: Die tunesische Gesellschaft stand vor allem während des Arabischen Frühlings im Fokus europäischen Interesses. Doch wie haben sich die Kultur und vor allem die Geschlechterverhältnisse dort überhaupt entwickelt?Diesen Fragen geht der Band mit zwei Blickrichtungen nach: Zum einen wird die Transformation der Geschlechterverhältnisse in der Geschichte Tunesiens seit der Unabhängigkeit, der Diktatur und der Revolution 2011 bis zur Gegenwart analysiert. Zum anderen werden auf theoretisch-begrifflicher Ebene Transformationen des Feminismus und der Geschlechterbegriffe von einem Denken der Differenz und einer Politik der Repräsentation hin zu neueren dekonstruktiven und postkolonialen Gendertheorien erforscht. Betrachtet werden dabei vor allem die Bereiche der Künste, der Populärkultur sowie der Mode als wesentliche Medien der Transformation.

    Abstract: Political interest is the strongest predictor of 'good citizenship', yet hardly anything is known about it. For the first time in over three decades, here is a study explaining what political interest is, where it comes from, and why it matters. Providing the most thorough description available of political interest in four Western democracies this study analyzes large household panel data sets rarely used in political science to explain how interest develops in people's lives. In an accessible manner, the book's analytical approach pushes applied social scientists to consider how panel data can be used to better understand political behavior. It does so in a way that doesn't gloss over complexities, and explains them in straightforward language. Advanced statistical methods are presented informally, accompanied by graphical illustrations that require no prior knowledge to understand the methods used

    Abstract: The book critically analyzes the ongoing changes in the regional, intra-regional, and global dynamics of cooperation, from a multi-disciplinary and pluralist perspective. It is based on the insight that in a post-hegemonic world the formation of regions and the process of globalization can be largely disconnected from the orbit of the US, and that a plurality of power and worldviews has replaced US hegemony. In spite of these changes, most existing analyses of current changes in the world order still rely upon Western-centered approaches, and Westphalian thinking. Against this backdrop, the book proposes to advance a truly global IR understanding of the post-hegemonic world, and weaves together the pluralist and multi-disciplinary perspectives of scholars located all around the world. The book explores different questions, for example the status and role of BRICS in the changing international order; how countries in the Global South can use regionalism to change the world order; the competing worldviews that manifest themselves in the institutional variety of regionalism; and, most importantly, how all these changes push International Relations as a field to become more global, or at least to go beyond Westphalian thinking - thus bringing the role of multilateralism back to the discussion.

    Abstract: "As we will demonstrate in this book, the new fault lines around globalization can no longer be fully captured along the classic redistributional left-right axis. In important respects, they run perpendicular to it. Since the end of the Cold War, parties of the mainstream Left and Right, which had transformed themselves in the decades before from 'class' to catch-all parties (Kirchheimer 1965), have converged further on pro-globalization positions on a range of issues, such as support for European integration, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and trade agreements such as TTIP. Even on immigration, probably the most divisive of the issues related to globalization, differences between the mainstream Left and Right have become much smaller than they used to be - both because mainstream left parties have distanced themselves from earlier experiments with multicultural policies and because Conservatives have, at least in large parts of Western Europe, embraced pro-immigration views"--

    Abstract: Since the 1980 military coup in Turkey, much of the history and politics of the country can be described as a struggle between democracy and authoritarianism. In this accessible account of the country's politics, society and economics, the authors delve into the causes and processes of what has been called a democratic 'backsliding'. In order to explore this, Yeşim Arat and Şevket Pamuk, two of Turkey's leading social scientists, focus on the mutual distrust between the secular and Islamist groups. They argue that the attempts by a secular coalition to circumscribe the Islamists in power had a boomerang effect. The Islamists struck back first in self-defence, then in pursuit of authoritarian power.     Abstract: This analysis of the "foreign cultural politics as conflict prevention" shows how strongly the foreign cultural politics of Germany are still being structured by national systems, narratives and hierarchies.
    Abstract: Wir leben in einer verflochtenen und dennoch geteilten Welt: Asymmetrien, Grenzziehungen und Politiken der Differenz bringen gleichzeitig die Trennlinien und den gemeinsamen Kontext für globales Zusammenleben hervor. Diese Ambivalenz schlägt sich auch in der deutschen Auswärtigen Kulturpolitik nieder, die sich ursprünglich an den Ordnungen des Nationalen orientiert hat, seit der Jahrtausendwende aber zunehmend auch geopolitische Bruchlinien und Konflikte als ihre Arbeitsfelder begreift. Basierend auf Feldforschungen in Berlin, Ramallah, Sarajevo, Tel Aviv und Jerusalem zeichnet Jens Adam Formierungs- und Übersetzungsprozesse einer neuen Policy nach. Er eröffnet damit Einblicke in translokale Wissens- und Handlungsräume, in denen sich Ordnungen des Nationalen und Potenziale der Kosmopolitisierung kreuzen. Ausgezeichnet mit dem ifa-Forschungspreis Auswärtige Kulturpolitik 2016.

In this text, this question is answered by studying responses to police violence in Delhi and to army violence in the context of a secessionist movement in Assam.     Abstract: From the upheavals of recent national elections to the success of the #MyDressMyChoice feminist movement, digital platforms have already had a dramatic impact on political life in Kenya - one of the most electronically advanced countries in sub-Saharan Africa. While the impact of the Digital Age on Western politics has been extensively debated, there is still little appreciation of how it has been felt in developing countries such as Kenya, where Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and other online platforms are increasingly a part of everyday life.0Written by a respected Kenyan activist and researcher at the forefront of political online struggles, this book presents a unique contribution to the debate on digital democracy.     Abstract: Non-elected actors, such as non-governmental organizations and celebrity activists, present themselves as representatives of others to audiences of decision-makers, such as state leaders, the European Union, the United Nations, and the World Trade Organization. These actors are increasingly included in the deliberation and decision-making processes of such institutions. To take one well-known example, the non-governmental organization, Oxfam, presses decision-makers and governments for fair trade rules on behalf of the world's poor. What entitles such 'self-appointed representatives' to speak and act for the poor? As The Economist asked, 'Who elected Oxfam?'. Montanaro claims that such actors can, and should, be conceptualized as representatives, and that they can - though do not always - represent others in a manner that we can recognize as democratic. However, in order to do so, we must stretch our imaginations beyond the standard normative framework of elections

    Abstract: At a time when the legitimacy of democracies is in question, calls to improve the quality of public debate and deliberative democracy are sweeping the social sciences. Yet, real deliberation lies far from the deliberative ideal. Theorists have argued that linguistic and cultural differences foster inequality and impede democratic deliberation. In this empirical study, the author presents the collective practices of political translation, which help multilingual and culturally diverse groups work together more democratically than homogeneous groups. Political translation, distinct from linguistic translation, is a set of disruptive and communicative practices developed by activists and grassroots community organizers in order to address inequities hindering democratic deliberation and to entreat powerful groups to work together more inclusively with disempowered groups. Based on ten years of fieldwork, Political Translation provides the first systematic comparative study of deliberation under conditions of linguistic difference and cultural misunderstandings

    Abstract: The book describes the confusing, contradictory and individualized musicscape in Turkey around the turn of the twenty-first century, including its prehistory throughout the twentieth century and sometimes beyond. Its focus lies on the recent tendency towards a disintegration of musical traditions into internationalism and multiple musical hybrids which might be described as a process of individualization. The category of individual as used here includes individual musicians, individual music pieces, individual life experiences, identities and approaches to music, individual musical projects, individual CDs and concerts, even individual concepts of music theory, conferences or research projects. Several factors lead to this development: A growing rate and importance of migration and international mobility; the increase of cross-cultural encounters and experiences; the availability of almost all Ottoman-Turkish, Anatolian and global musical styles, instruments and other musical elements via media; the opening up of identity discourses. A final chapter is intended as a reflection on the question of how this unprecedented musical expansion could have happened within an authoritarian state and society such as the Republic of Turkey.

Expert knowledge both mediates and facilitates public apprehension of problems, yet it also threatens to exclude the public from consequential judgments and decisions located in technical domains. This book asks: how can we have inclusion without collapsing the very concept of expertise? How can public judgment be engaged in expert practices in a way that does not reduce to populism? Drawing on deliberative democratic theory and social studies of science, Critical Elitism argues that expert authority depends ultimately on the exercise of public judgment in a context in which there are live possibilities for protest, opposition and scrutiny. This account points to new ways of looking at the role of civil society, expert institutions, and democratic innovations in the constitution of expert authority within democratic systems. Using the example of climate science, Critical Elitism highlights not only the risks but also the benefits of contesting expertise

Daniel Ziblatt revisits this timely and classic question in a wide-ranging historical narrative that traces the evolution of modern political democracy in Europe from its modest beginnings in 1830s Britain to Adolf Hitler's 1933 seizure of power in Weimar Germany. Based on rich historical and quantitative evidence, the book offers a major reinterpretation of European history and the question of how stable political democracy is achieved. The barriers to inclusive political rule, Ziblatt finds, were not inevitably overcome by unstoppable tides of socioeconomic change, a simple triumph of a growing middle class, or even by working class collective action.     Abstract: This book examines recent debates on the political dynamics of cosmopolitanism, particularly in its connection with European civil society and the public sphere. The aim of the volume is to trace to what extent cosmopolitanism corresponds to «second modernity», with the latter concept referring to the potential for consensus, the creation of multiple political alternatives and the recognition of otherness. The book accordingly explores questions about democratic legitimacy and the formation of social and political institutions and presents empirical research on phenomena such as global violence.The volume is intended to constitute a cosmopolitan project in itself, comprising contributions from scholars with very diverse approaches. Together, these contributions provide a stimulating analysis of what cosmopolitanism can offer to socially and politically diverse twenty-first-century societies

    Abstract: Is democracy in crisis? On the one hand, it seems to be decaying under the leadership of political elites who make decisions behind closed doors. On the other hand, citizens are taking to the streets to firmly assert their political participation across the globe. Drawing on a range of theoretical and empirical perspectives, this collection examines the multiple transformations which both the practice and the idea of democracy are undergoing today. It starts by questioning whether there is a crisis of democracy, or if part of this crisis lies in the inadequacy of social and political theory to describe current challenges. Exploring a range of violent and non-violent forms of resistance, the book goes on to ask how these are related to the arts, what form of civility they require and whether they undermine the functioning of institutions. In the final section of the book, the contributors examine the normative foundations of democratic practices and institutions, especially with regard to the tension between human rights and democracy and the special character of democratic authority.
