Abstract: Die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie Bruno Latours kennt kein Konzept des Fremden. Dies mag irritierend erscheinen, bedenkt man, dass die Figur des Fremden eines der zentralen Schlüsselkonzepte der Soziologie darstellt. Von Simmel bis Schütz stehen Fremdheit und der Fremde stets im Spannungsverhältnis zum Eigenen, welches gerade in der Begegnung des Fremden besonders sichtbar wird. Mit Werkzeugen der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie entwirft Edda Mack eine soziologische Denkweise, die das Theoretisieren selbst in den Mittelpunkt soziologischer Forschung stellt. Am Beispiel der Fluchtmigrationsforschung zeigt sie auf, dass eine solche Denkweise in ihrer Umsetzung nah bei den Dingen von Belang bleiben kann.

Abstract: Im Zentrum dieser wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Studie steht Wilhelm Mannhardt, eine Forscherpersönlichkeit des 19. Jahrhunderts, dessen frühe empirische Arbeiten für das disziplinäre Selbstverständnis der Volkskunde und ihrer Nachfolgewissenschaften einschlägig, aber kaum mehr bekannt sind. Die erneute Auseinandersetzung orientiert sich an den Ansätzen der modernen Wissenschaftsforschung, namentlich an Bruno Latour und seinem forschungspraktischen Imperativ „science in action“, um den wissenschaftlichen Alltag aus einer emischen Perspektive heraus als vergangene Vollzugswirklichkeit sichtbar zu machen und in einer dichten Beschreibung zur Darstellung zu bringen. Die Grundlage der Untersuchung bilden neu erschlossenes oder bisher kaum berücksichtigtes Archivmaterial aus ganz Europa sowie Mannhardts wissenschaftlicher Nachlass, der in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin aufbewahrt wird. Das vielfältige Material wird historisch kontextualisiert, analysiert, interpretiert und auf seine aktuelle Bedeutung für die moderne Forschung reflektiert. Zusätzlich sind zwei bislang unbekannte Schriften aus Mannhardt Nachlass – „Über das Studium der Volksüberlieferung“ und „Moderne Sagenbildungen“ – im Anhang dieses Buches erstmalig editiert.

Abstract: Unter den Imbissangeboten in deutschen Fußballstadien dominieren Bratwurst und Bier. Für viele scheint diese Verbindung so selbstverständlich zu sein, dass sogar von der Fußball- oder Stadionwurst die Rede ist. Zwar gibt es inzwischen eine Reihe von Alternativen bei Fußballveranstaltungen zu kaufen und sogar vegetarische und vegane Speisen sind zu bekommen, doch handelt es sich dabei eher um Nischenprodukte. Warum ist das so? Wie konnte es dazu kommen? Und wie erklärt sich die Tatsache, dass Besucher/-innen in Fußballstadien bevorzugt fettiges Fleisch und Alkohol zu sich nehmen, während sie 22 durchtrainierten Menschen beim Sport zusehen?In dieser Studie wird nach Antworten auf diese Fragen gesucht. Dabei werden die verschiedenen Bedeutungsebenen von Nahrungsmitteln und Getränken am Beispiel der Stadionverpflegung und somit im Rahmen eines kommerzialisierten Großevents aufgezeigt. Grundlage der Ausführungen sind ethnografische Erkundungen vor Ort, bei denen auf die Symboliken und Narrative von Speisen und Getränken geachtet wurde und untersucht werden sollte, wie sich die kulinarischen Fanfreuden zwischen Genusserleben, Gemeinschaftsgefühl, Gewissensnöten und Gesundheitsvorstellungen deuten lassen.

Abstract: Living History, Reenactment und Rollenspiele verzeichnen in den letzten Jahrzehnten einen hohen Zulauf. Am Beispiel des Münchner Cowboy-Clubs widmet sich Cindy Drexl einem Forschungsfeld, das in den Empirischen Kulturwissenschaften bisher eine marginale Rolle spielt: der Indianisten- und Cowboyszene. Gerade in einer Gesellschaft, in der Lebensläufe projektförmig und Hobbys dem Lifestyle und den Marktlogiken unterworfen werden, erscheint die Mitgliedschaft in einem Verein anachronistisch. Aber was bewegt Erwachsene, oft über Jahre hinweg, jedes Wochenende in einem Cowboy-Club, ein möglichst „authentisches“ historisches Erlebnis mit anderen auszugestalten? Welche Sehnsüchte und Faszinationen sind damit verbunden? Wie gehen die Übergänge vom Alltags-Ich zum Hobby-Ich vonstatten?Um einen direkten Zugang zur Hobbyistenszene zu erhalten, hat sich die Forscherin selbst anverwandelt. Multisensorische, autoethnographische Erfahrungen kombiniert mit leitfadengestützten Interviews bilden die methodische Grundlage dieser Studie. Diese bietet aus einer emischen Perspektive tiefe Einblicke in ein Hobbyphänomen und die Bedeutung von Vergangenheit.

Es wird versucht nachzuzeichnen, auf welche Weise die historisch gebauten Bauern-, Hirten- oder Fischerhäuser ausgestattet wurden, wo und warum sie in der akademischen Bildungssphäre einen ästhetischen und repräsentativen Wert zugesprochen erhielten, wie ihre Verdrängung während der Epoche des Sozialismus vor sich ging und wann sie unter neuen wirtschaftlichen und lebensweltlichen Prämissen als temporäre oder auch dauerhafte Wohngebäude neu entdeckt wurden. Die Wiederentdeckung bzw. Neubelebung erfolgte und erfolgt aktuell unter verschiedenen Aspekten. Neben das Motiv der Erhaltung des Erbes der Minderheitenkulturen und seiner nichtmusealen Identitätspräsentation treten nun die Nachhaltigkeitseffekte der Bauweise mit lokal-/regionaltypischen Materialien und Handwerkstechniken (etwa Holzbauweise) sowie eine im Computerzeitalter neugewonnene Attraktivität des ländlich-ruhigen Wohnens in den Vordergrund. Abstract: Frankfurt School Critical Theory describes itself as an unmasking critique of power. However, it has surprisingly little to say about major structural oppressions, including gender. A distinctive feature of critique is that, in diagnosing what is wrong with the world, it ought to be guided by the experiences of oppressed groups. Yet, in practice, it tends to pay little heed to these experiences. 'The Gender of Critical Theory' shows how these oversights and tensions stem from the preoccupation with normative foundations that has dominated Frankfurt School theory since Habermas and has given rise to a mode of paradigm-led inquiry that undermines an effective critique of oppression.

Abstract: From the 1840s until 1917, prostitution was legally tolerated across the Russian Empire under a system known as regulation. Medical police were in charge of compiling information about registered prostitutes and ensuring that they followed the strict rules prescribed by the imperial state governing their visibility and behaviour. The vast majority of women who sold sex hailed from the lower classes, as did their managers and clients. This study examines how regulation was implemented, experienced, and resisted amid rapid urbanization, industrialization, and modernization around the turn of the twentieth century. Each chapter examines the lives and challenges of different groups who engaged with the world of prostitution, including women who sold sex, the men who paid for it, mediators, the police, and wider urban communities.

Abstract: Venedig und sein Karneval waren in der Vormoderne für Reisende aus ganz Europa ein großer Anziehungspunkt. Nach dem Untergang der Republik 1797 verlor das Fest allerdings an Bedeutung. Erst am Ende der 1970er-Jahre kam es zu einer dauerhaften und öffentlichkeitswirksamen Wiederbelebung dieser Veranstaltung. Die vorliegende Studie rekonstruiert die Geschichte des venezianischen Karnevals und beleuchtet dabei insbesondere die jüngsten Entwicklungstendenzen. Auf der Grundlage eines mehrjährigen Beobachtungsprozesses wird die Relevanz des Festes für die Stadtbewohner thematisiert, seine touristische Vermarktung beschrieben sowie seine Inszenierung als (post)modernes Event analysiert.

Abstract: 'Cold War Space and Culture in the 1960s and 1980s' studies the two periods in which Americans were actively encouraged to excavate their own backyards while governments the world over exhausted their budgets on fortified super-shelters and megaton bombs. The dreams and nightmares inspired by the spectre of nuclear destruction were expressed in images and forms from comics, movies, and pulp paperbacks to policy documents, protest movements, and survivalist tracts. Illustrated with photographs, artwork, and movie and television stills of real and imagined fallout shelters and other bunker fantasies, David L. Pike's continues his decades-long exploration of the meanings of modern undergrounds.

Abstract: Social practice theories help to challenge the often hidden paradigms, worldviews, and values at the basis of many unsustainable practices. Discourses and their boundaries define what is seen as possible, as well as the range of issues and their solutions. By exploring the connections between practices and discourses, Minna Kanerva develops a conceptual approach enabling purposive change in unsustainable social practices. Radical transformation towards new meatways is arguably necessary, yet complex psychological, ideological, and power-related mechanisms currently inhibit change.

Abstract: Aus der vom französischen Soziologen Bruno Latour eingeforderten Berücksichtigung der praktischen Disziplinen und ihrer Objekte lässt sich eine Neuausrichtung der Stadtsoziologie ableiten. Jessica Wilde zeigt auf, wie sich eine solche Soziologie von der menschlichen Gesellschaft als Fluchtpunkt sozialtheoretischen Denkens verabschiedet und sich programmatisch als Technik-, Stadtbau-, Architektur-, Planungs- und Designsoziologie neu aufstellt. Den urbanen Artefakten - vom Verkehrspoller bis zum Bebauungsplan - spürt sie dabei bis in die Werkstätten der planenden und gestaltenden Berufspraktiker*innen nach und macht die »Fabrikation der Stadt« zum Gegenstand soziologischen Forschens.

Abstract: Der Rassenanthropologe Henning von Rittersdorf ist eine fiktive Gestalt. Aber es hätte ihn geben können. Er ist der Idealtypus eines deutschen Wissenschaftlers, der durch drei politische Systeme hindurchmäandert ist, sich mühelos in das »Dritte Reich« eingefügt und kaum mühevoller wieder herausgefunden hat. 1969 legte er eine Dokumentensammlung als Beweis vor, dass er stets ein Wissenschaftler gewesen sei, der nur der »Sache« gedient habe, »missbraucht« durch die Nationalsozialisten. Doch durch Streichungen, Kommentare und Randbemerkungen verlor er die Deutungshoheit über sein Material und bestätigte ungewollt seine tiefgehende Verstrickung in den Nationalsozialismus.Thomas Etzemüller bietet eine lebendige, doku-fiktionale Innensicht aus dem Leben eines Rassenanthropologen. Und macht deutlich, wie romanhaft die zugrunde liegende Realität gewesen ist — gleichwohl sie fürchterliche, reale Effekte gezeitigt hat.

Dabei ergeben sich Fragen nach Ordnungssystemen, der angemessenen Beschreibung der Sammlungen, der Verantwortung für ihr Zustandekommen und der Legitimierung bestimmter Verbreitungspraktiken. Auf der Grundlage von Fallbeispielen präsentieren die Beiträger*innen des Bandes Antworten und zeichnen ein praxisorientiertes Bild von Wirkungen der Digitalisierung ethnologischer Sammlungen heute.

Abstract: Die Studie untersucht ländliche Diskotheken in Südwestdeutschland zwischen 1970 und 1995. Diese Tanzbetriebe werden als populäre Orte des Vergnügens betrachtet. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses stehen deshalb die Räume, die Veranstaltungsprogramme sowie die mit dem Diskothekenbetrieb verbundenen Konflikte. Zugleich soll deutlich werden, dass die ländlichen Lokale nicht nur Unterhaltung versprachen, sondern auch Möglichkeiten der Begegnung. Unterhaltungskulturen in ländlichen Gegenden, die Freizeitgestaltung dort beheimateter Jugendlichen sowie das Zusammenspiel von Ruralität und fortschreitender Modernisierung stießen in der Populärkulturforschung bislang auf eher geringes Interesse. Die Studie möchte diese Forschungslücke schließen und auf Grundlage von Archivstudien sowie Zeitzeugeninterviews Impulse für die empirische Erforschung populärer Orte geben.

Abstract: Sir Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard (1902-1973) is widely considered the most influential British anthropologist of the twentieth century, known to generations of students for his seminal works on South Sudanese ethnography Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic Among the Azande (OUP 1937) and The Nuer (OUP 1940). In these works, now classics in the anthropological literature, Evans-Pritchard broke new ground on questions of rationality, social accountability, kinship, social and political organization, and religion, as well as influentially moving the discipline in Britain away from the natural sciences and towards history. Yet despite much discussion about his theoretical contributions to anthropology, no study has yet explored his fieldwork in detail in order to get a better understanding of its historical contexts, local circumstances or the social encounters out of which it emerged. This book then is just such an exploration, of Evans-Pritchard the fieldworker through the lens of his fieldwork photography. Through an engagement with his photographic archive, and by thinking with it alongside his written ethnographies and other unpublished evidence, the book offers a new insight into the way in which Evans-Pritchard's theoretical contributions to the0discipline were shaped by his fieldwork and the numerous local people in Africa with whom he collaborated. By writing history through field photographs we move back towards the fieldwork experiences, exploring the vivid traces, lived realities and local presences at the heart of the social encounter that formed the basis of Evans-Pritchard's anthropology

Abstract: Successful communication requires optimal relevance to a target audience. Relevance theory (RT) provides an excellent model based on this insight, but the impact of the theory has until now been restricted due to an almost exclusive focus on spoken face-to-face communication. 'Visual and Multimodal Communication' systematically demonstrates how RT can fulfill its promise to develop into an inclusive theory of communication. In this text, Charles Forceville refines and adapts RT's original claims to show its applicability to static visuals and multimodal discourses in popular culture genres. Using colourful examples, he explains how RT can be expanded and adapted to accommodate mass-communicative visual and visual-plus-verbal messages.

Postmigrantische Perspektiven werden hierbei mit transnationalen, postkolonialen und diversitätsbewussten Ansätzen zusammengebracht und mithilfe einer dezidiert feministischen, gendersoziologischen, intersektionalen Perspektive erweitert. Das Potenzial einer postmigrantischen Perspektive wird im Kontext von Gender, Transnationalität, Care und anderen Forschungsfeldern (neu) erprobt.

Aufbauend auf Material, das sie über 17 Jahre gesammelt hat, legt Urmila Goel in ihrer Ethnografie drei Mosaike dieses virtuellen Raums. Sie beschreibt, wie die unterschiedlichen Teile des Portals (Artikel, Forum, Gästebuch, etc.) genutzt wurden und zeichnet die Entwicklungsschritte des Community-Portals von seiner Gründung bis zum Umzug ins Web 2.0 nach. Dabei analysiert sie rassismuskritisch, wie das »Indernet« zu einem Raum der natio-ethno-kulturellen (Mehrfach-)Zugehörigkeit wurde und welche Ausschlüsse damit einhergingen.

Abstract: Parting from conventional social science arguments that people speak for the ethnic groups they represent or for social or class-based groups, this study argues that attitudes of Ecuador's Amazon citizens are shaped by environmental vulnerability, & specifically exposure to environmental degradation. Using results of a nationwide survey to show that vulnerability matters in determining environmental attitudes of respondents, the authors argue that groups might have more success mobilizing on behalf of the environment through geographically based 'polycentric rights,' rather than through more traditional & ethnically bound multicultural rights. This text offers among the first methodological bridges between scholarship considering social movements, & predominantly ethnic groups, as primary agents of environmental change in Latin America & those emphasizing the agency of individuals.

Abstract: In this work, Paul Apostolidis asks what we can learn about social and economic precarity by considering the situation of Latin American migrant day laborers in the United States today. To do so, the author places Latino day laborers' commentaries in dialogue with critical social theory. Apostolidis sees these day laborers' circumstances both as exceptional and as synecdoches for precarious conditions that affect multitudes of workers. Through its combined approach to critical theory and field research with migrant workers, this text makes a case for a politics that is attuned to questions of time and advanced by precarious workers throughout society.

Die Werbeindustrie, insbesondere die Tourismuswerbung, arbeitet stetig und intensiv an der positiven Konnotation des Strandes mit. Diese Studie widmet sich den Vorstellungen und Sehnsüchten. Es geht dabei um deren mediale Vermittlung und die Werbestrategien, wie sie in Reisekatalogen des Unternehmens Scharnow-Reisen in den Jahren von 1956 bis 1990 zum Ausdruck kommen. Abstract: Interkultureller Kontakt zeigt sich derzeit angesichts der vielfältigen globalen Entwicklungen als mannigfacher Diskussionsgegenstand. Auch die deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen unterlagen in den letzten Jahrzehnten unterschiedlichen Annäherungs- und Entfernungsstadien. Der Blick auf Lehrkräfte, die maßgeblich für Austauschprojekte an Schulen dieser beiden Länder seit den 1970er Jahren verantwortlich zeichnen, fehlte jedoch bisher in der volkskundlich-kulturanthropologischen Forschung. Hierzu führte die Autorin mit Lehrerinnen und Lehrern unterschiedlicher Schulen in Deutschland und Polen leitfragenorientierte Interviews über deren jeweiligen Erlebnis-, Erinnerungs- und Erfahrungsraum, die sowohl im Kontext gesamtgesellschaftlicher Transformationsprozesse einer realsozialistischen als auch postrealsozialistischen Ära zu sehen sind.

Abstract: The story of the pervasive and resilient Russian bathhouse (banya) offers new perspectives on the evolution of Russian identity, conceptions of health and hygiene, and forms of community, sexuality, and sociability. The meanings that have formed around the banya over its thousand-year history make it a unique prism through which to understand the effects of broad social, economic, and political changes on the everyday lives of Russians and to understand how Russians have seemed at times barbaric and at times enlightened to outsiders. Sources ranging from the earliest recorded Russian chronicles to recent feature films, from municipal codes to highbrow Russian literature, illustrate the ways in which the banya, whether in Russia, in the Russian diaspora, or in the imagination of outsiders, has been a place to get clean and a space for intrigue, intimacy, violence, and sex.

Abstract: The Mediterranean Sea is now the deadliest region in the world for migrants. Although the death toll has been rising for many years, the EU response remains fragmented and short sighted. Politicians frame these migration flows as an unprecedented crisis and emphasize migration control at the EU's external boundaries. In this context, 'At Europe's Edge' investigates why the EU prioritizes the fortification of its external borders; why migrants nevertheless continue to cross the Mediterranean and to die at sea; and how EU member states on the southern periphery respond to their new role as migration gatekeepers. This work addresses these questions by examining the relationship between the EU and Malta, a small state with an outsized role in migration politics as EU policies place it at the crosshairs of migration flows and controls.

Abstract: This title examines the concept of intersectional discrimination and why it has been difficult for jurisdictions around the world to redress it in discrimination law. 'Intersectionality' was coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. 30 years since its conception, the term has become a buzzword in sociology, anthropology, feminist studies, psychology, literature, and politics. But it remains marginal in the discourse of discrimination law, where it was first conceived. Traversing its long and rich history of development, the book explains what intersectionality is as a theory and as a category of discrimination. It then explains what it takes for discrimination law to be reimagined from the perspective of intersectionality in reference to comparative laws in the US, UK, South Africa, Canada, India, and the jurisprudence of the European Courts and international human rights treaty bodies.
