Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes entwickeln daher Ansätze für eine fundierte Bildlesekompetenz im Rahmen politischer Bildung und liefern einen inter- und transdisziplinären bildanalytischen Werkzeugkasten zur Decodierung von politischen Bildern mittels generalisierender Analyseelemente

    Abstract: Social media platforms do not just circulate political ideas, but support computational propaganda and manipulative disinformation campaigns. Although some of these disinformation campaigns are carried out directly by individuals, most are waged by software, commonly known as bots, programmed to perform simple, repetitive, robotic tasks. Including case studies from nine countries and covering propaganda efforts over a wide array of social media platforms, this text argues that bots, fake accounts, and social media algorithms amount to a new political communications mechanism that it terms 'computational propaganda.'

    Abstract: Qualitative Studies of Silence brings together influential qualitative researchers from across the social sciences and humanities who have sought to understand the power of what remains unsaid, both psychologically and socially. Each chapter identifies one or more signs of silence and explains how these can form the basis of a rigorous qualitative investigation. The authors also demonstrate how silences operate in our private and collective lives by fulfilling psychological, relational, institutional, and ideological functions. The book contains multiple disciplinary perspectives and presents analyses of wide-ranging topics, such as medical consultations, whistleblowers, silence in court, omission-as-propaganda, trauma survivors, the silence of war museums, racism in the Americas, gendered silences, paid domestic labour, the undocumented student movement, and the Nazi past. This collection shows how such qualitative studies can reveal and contribute to understanding the unsaid as social action.

    Abstract: Why do Americans have such animosity for people who identify with the opposing political party? Jaime E. Settle argues that in the context of increasing partisan polarization among American political elites, the way we communicate on Facebook uniquely facilitates psychological polarization among the American public. Frenemies introduces the END Framework of social media interaction. END refers to a subset of content that circulates in a social media ecosystem: a personalized, quantified blend of politically informative 'expression', 'news', and 'discussion' seamlessly interwoven into a wider variety of socially informative content. Scrolling through the News Feed triggers a cascade of processes that result in negative attitudes about those who disagree with us politically. The inherent features of Facebook, paired with the norms of how people use the site, heighten awareness of political identity, bias the inferences people make about others' political views, and foster stereotyped evaluations of the political out-group

    Abstract: Who watches over the party-state? In this engaging analysis, Maria Repnikova reveals the webs of an uneasy partnership between critical journalists and the state in China. More than merely a passive mouthpiece or a dissident voice, the media in China also plays a critical oversight role, one more frequently associated with liberal democracies than with authoritarian systems. Chinese central officials cautiously endorse media supervision as a feedback mechanism, as journalists carve out space for critical reporting by positioning themselves as aiding the agenda of the central state. Drawing on rare access in the field, Media Politics in China examines the process of guarded improvisation that has defined this volatile partnership over the past decade on a routine basis and in the aftermath of major crisis events. Combined with a comparative analysis of media politics in the Soviet Union and contemporary Russia, the book highlights the distinctiveness of Chinese journalist-state relations, as well as the renewed pressures facing them in the Xi era

Kulturelle Projekte wie beispielsweise das (mittlerweile geschlossene) »Cinema Jenin« und das »Freedom Theatre« geben Aufschluss über Widersprüche und Dynamiken von (gewaltfreiem) Widerstand, Gegen-Erzählungen und Dialog. Anne Rohrbach zeigt, wie kulturelle Projekte Frei-Räume in einer fragmentierten Gesellschaft öffnen und einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu leisten können, translokale Erinnerungs- und Widerstandsräume zu etablieren.     Abstract: Die Frage nach den Möglichkeitsbedingungen verantwortlicher Wissensproduktion gewinnt gerade dann an Aktualität, wenn die Idee vom postsouveränen Sprechen ihren Platz im Diskurs der Verantwortung behauptet. Der Band stellt sich dieser Frage und leuchtet einen Versuchsraum aus, in dem das Paradoxon von Positionierung und Transformation als produktives Denken in Gleichzeitigkeit installiert wird.Durch die Zusammenführung der radikaldemokratischen Positionen Ernesto Laclaus und Chantal Mouffes mit Judith Butlers weitreichendem Diskursmodell entsteht die Skizze einer Arbeitsweise des Sowohl-als-auch. Damit verbunden ist das Anliegen, die eingebrachten Reflexionsstrategien als demokratische Artikulationskanäle in das Öffentliche zu tragen

    Abstract: Die 1968er-Bewegung hat die Bundesrepublik politisch kaum verändert. Aber aus ihr heraus hat sich ein neuer Kommunikationsstil entwickelt, der unsere Gesellschaft bis heute prägt. Joachim Scharloth zeigt, dass nicht die politisierten Studenten, sondern die Aktivisten der Kommunebewegung eine nachhaltige Veränderung der bundesrepublikanischen Gesellschaft angestoßen haben. Von der Kritik bürgerlicher Rituale und den Ritualen des Protests in den 1960er Jahren über die Formierung eines hedonistischen Lebensstils im Alternativmilieu in den 1970er Jahren bis hin zum Wandel von Kommunikations- und Verkehrsformen seit den 1980er Jahren reicht der historische Bogen, den dieses Buch schlägt. Kommunikationsformen sind der Seismograph, an dem die gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen ablesbar werden. Anhand bislang noch nicht ausgewerteten Quellenmaterials wird die Entstehung neuer Kommunikationsformen und ihre Verbreitung in Kommuneküchen und Studentenkneipen nachgezeichnet und identitätspolitisch motiviert. Was 1968 als Ausdruck authentischer Gefühle und solidarischer Nähe intendiert war, ist in der Mehrheitsgesellschaft als Inszenierung von Informalität und Emotionalität, als "doing buddy" angekommen.

    Abstract: Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World offers a broad exploration of the conceptual foundations for comparative analysis of media and politics globally. It takes as its point of departure the widely used framework of Hallin and Mancini's Comparing Media Systems, exploring how the concepts and methods of their analysis do and do not prove useful when applied beyond the original focus of their 'most similar systems' design and the West European and North American cases it encompassed. It is intended both to use a wider range of cases to interrogate and clarify the conceptual framework of Comparing Media Systems and to propose new models, concepts and approaches that will be useful for dealing with non-Western media systems and with processes of political transition.     Abstract: Wie Themen in Medien und Politik behandelt werden ist unter gesellschafts- und demokratietheoretischen Gesichtspunkten relevant, da ein sinnvoller Diskurs zwischen Bevölkerung, Medien und Politik nur dann stattfinden kann, wenn es zumindest gewisse inhaltliche Überschneidungen gibt. Hannah Schmid-Petri vergleicht Verarbeitungs-Prozesse (Framing) für Medien und Politik auf der Grundlage system- und akteurstheoretischer Annahmen, an die Erkenntnisse aus dem Bereich der Nachrichtenwerttheorie, des Agenda-Settings und des Framings angebunden werden. Die Verarbeitung eines Issues wird verstanden als die Selektion von einzelnen inhaltlichen Aspekten, die sich zu Mustern verdichten, sowie die Auswahl von Akteuren, die sich zu einem Thema äußern. Kenntnisse über die Selektion von Issues werden dabei auf die Verarbeitung übertragen („Selektion zweiter Ordnung“) und somit Nachrichtenwerttheorie und Framing-Ansatz integriert

    Abstract: Wie sind die sozialen Effekte populärer Künste und Vergnügungen zu untersuchen? Drei Fallstudien zum Kampf gegen Schlager in den 1920ern, zum Heimatfilm der 1950er und zur Bewegung gegen 'Schmutz und Schund' stellen einen praxeologischen Zugriff vor. Nicht vermeintliche Botschaften populärer Künste stehen im Zentrum, sondern das auf sie bezogene soziale Handeln. Rekonstruiert werden verbreitete Bilder von, Urteile über und Weisen des Umgangs mit Populärkultur, erschlossen aus den Praktiken der Aufnahme von Massenkünsten in den Alltag.
    Abstract: In seiner 'Legende von der Entstehung des Buches Taoteking auf dem Weg des Laotse in die Emigration' macht Bertolt Brecht am Ende darauf aufmerksam, dass wir diese Schrift nicht allein der Weisheit des Laotse verdanken, sondern auch der neugierigen F- derung des Zöllners, der den Meister zum Aufschreiben nötigte. Die Schlusszeilen lauten: 'Darum sei der Zöllner auch bedankt: / Er hat sie [die Weisheit] ihm abverlangt.' Nun will der Autor dieses Bandes weder sich mit dem großen - otse noch die Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt mit dem chinesischen Zolleinnehmer vergleichen. Doch nachdem die Texte endlich in die Druckfassung gebracht waren, wurde dem Verfasser klar, dass auch hier das freundlich insistierende Verlangen von außen einen wesentlichen Anteil am Ergebnis hat. So ist an dieser Stelle der Geschichts- und Gesellschaftswiss- schaftlichen Fakultät der genannten Universität nicht allein dafür zu danken, dass sie mir die Ehre erwiesen hat, mich im Somm- semester 2009 mit der Otto von Freising-Gastprofessur zu betr- en. Und es ist nicht nur ein Kompliment an die Studierenden ab- statten, die in den Lehrveranstaltungen meine Gesprächspartner waren. Es ist gleichermaßen die Idee zu preisen, nach der die E- geladenen zwei öffentliche Vorträge unter einer gemeinsamen Fragestellung halten und dann daraus auch noch eine Publikation machen sollen. Dr. Kaspar Maase ist außerplanmäßiger Professor am Ludwig Uhland Institut für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft der Universität Tübingen.

    Abstract: In a bold rethinking of the Hollywood blacklist and McCarthyite America, Joseph Litvak reveals a political regime that did not end with the 1950s or even with the Cold War: a regime of compulsory sycophancy, in which the good citizen is an informer, ready to denounce anyone who will not play the part of the earnest, patriotic American. While many scholars have noted the anti-Semitism underlying the House Un-American Activities Committee's (HUAC's) anti-Communism, Litvak draws on the work of Theodor W. Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Alain Badiou, and Max Horkheimer to show how the committee conflated Jewishness with what he calls "comic cosmopolitanism," an intolerably seductive happiness, centered in Hollywood and New York, in show business and intellectual circles. He maintains that HUAC took the comic irreverence of the "uncooperative" witnesses as a crime against an American identity based on self-repudiation and the willingness to "name names"

    Abstract: This book explores how the Internet presents radical ways of organising and producing media that offer political and cultural alternatives, both to ways of doing business and to how we understand the world and our place in it. The book is characterised by in-depth case studies. Topics include the media of new social movements and other radical political organisations (including the far right); websites produced by fans of popular culture; and media dedicated to developing a critical, 'public' journalism.     Abstract: Government interventions in media markets are often criticized for preventing audiences from getting the media products they want. A free press is often asserted to be essential for democracy. The first point is incorrect and the second is inadequate as a policy guide. Part I of this book shows that unique aspects of media products prevent markets from providing for audience desires. Part II shows that four prominent, but different, theories of democracy lead to different conceptions of good journalistic practice, media policy, and proper constitutional principles. Part II makes clear that the choice among democratic theories is crucial for understanding what should be meant by free press. Part III explores international free trade in media products. Contrary to the dominant American position, it shows that Parts I and II's economic and democratic theory justify deviations from free trade in media products

    Abstract: The globalization of media industries that began during the 1980s and 1990s occurred at the same time as the establishment of or return to democratic forms of government in many Latin American countries. In this volume of specially commissioned essays, thirteen well-known media experts examine how the intersection of globalization and democratization has transformed media systems and policies throughout Latin America.     Abstract: People's perceptions of the attitudes and experiences of mass collectives are an increasingly important force in contemporary political life. In Impersonal Influence, Mutz goes beyond simply providing examples of how impersonal influence matters in the political process to provide a micro-level understanding of why information about distant and impersonal others often influence people's political attitudes and behaviors. Impersonal Influence is worthy of attention both from the standpoint of its impact on contemporary politics, and because of its potential to expand the boundaries of our understanding of social influence processes, and media's relation to them. The book's conclusions do not exonerate media from the effects of inaccurate portrayals of collective experience or opinion, but they suggest that the ways in which people are influenced by these perceptions are in themselves, not so much deleterious to democracy as absolutely necessary to promoting accountability in a large scale society
