    Abstract: While much has been written upon Social Darwinism, the historical impact of Darwinism upon theories of war and human aggression has been sadly neglected. This book is the first to study this discourse in depth. It challenges the received view that Darwinism generated essentially aggressive and warlike social values and pugnacious images of humankind. Paul Crook reconstructs the influential discourse of 'peace biology', whose liberal vision was of a basically free humanity, not fettered by iron laws of biological necessity or governed by violent genes. By exploring a gamut of Darwinian readings of history and war, mainly in the English-speaking world to 1919, this study throws new light upon militarism, peace movements, the origins of World War I and British social thought

    Abstract: Jeffrey C. Alexander brings together new and leading contributors to make a powerful and coherently argued case for a new direction in cultural sociology, one that focuses on the intersection between performance, ritual and social action. Performance has always been used by sociologists to understand the social world but this volume offers the first systematic analytical framework based on the performance metaphor to explain large-scale social and cultural processes. From September 11, to the Clinton/Lewinsky affair, to the role of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Social Performance draws on recent work in performative theory in the humanities and in cultural studies to offer a novel approach to the sociology of culture.     Abstract: The Question for Twentieth-Century China has been the integration of tradition and modernity. In this collection of essays written over a period of some twenty years (1987-2006), Chen Lai reflects on the question in an informative and original way. He reads behind the political slogans and engages with the thought both of Max Weber, Talcott Parsons and Western sociology, and representative Chinese thinkers, notably Feng Youlan and Liang Shuming.     Abstract: In Zeiten beschleunigten gesellschaftlichen Wandels hat das Generationsthema Konjunktur. Die wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Rekonstruktion des Generationenverständnisses seit der Antike offenbart jedoch, dass die bei Karl Mannheim angelegte Verbindung von Generationstheorie und Theorien des sozialen Wandels im Zuge der Professionalisierung der Soziologie verloren ging.Diese Studie schlägt durch eine innovative Interpretation der klassischen Vorlage die Brücke zu aktuellen Theorieentwicklungen. Unter Rückgriff auf die Analysen von Margaret S. Archer und Shmuel N. Eisenstadt stellt die Reformulierung des Generationskonzeptes den Konstitutionsprozess historischer Generationen als einen sozialen Mechanismus kulturellen Wandels und kollektiver Kreativität heraus. Damit wird nicht nur der Anschluss an die makrosoziologische Diskussion neu eröffnet, sondern auch die kulturtheoretische Frage nach der Vermittlung von Biographie und Geschichte wieder aufgenommen

    Abstract: This collection, dealing with case studies drawn from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Mauritius, examines the relationship between scientific claims and practices, and the exercise of colonial power. It challenges conventional views that portray science as a detached mode of reasoning with the capacity to confer benefits in a more or less even-handed manner. That science has the potential to further the collective good is not fundamentally at issue, but science can also be seen as complicit in processes of colonial domination. Not only did science assist in bolstering aspects of colonial power and exploitation, it also possessed a significant ideological component: it offered a means of legitimating colonial authority by counter-poising Western rationality to native superstition and it served to enhance the self-image of colonial or settler elites in important respects. This innovative volume ranges broadly through topics such as statistics, medicine, eugenics, agriculture, entomology and botany

    Abstract: An examination of early medieval ideas about death and dying, in relation to funeral practices, traditions and rituals. We all die, but how we perceive death as an event, process or state is inextricably connected to our experiences and the social and environmental culture in which we live. During the early middle ages, the body was used to demonstrate a whole range of concepts and assumptions: the ideal aristocrat possessed a strong, whole and virile body which reflected his inner virtues, and nobility of birth was understood to presuppose and enhance nobility of character and action. Here, the author examines how contemporary ideas about death and dying disrupted this abstract ideal. She explores the meaning of aristocratic funerary practices such as embalming and heart burial, and, conversely, looks at what the gruesomely elaborate executions of aristocratic traitors in England around the turn of the fourteenth century reveal about the role of the body in perceptions of group identity and society at large.     Abstract: The modern history of Ladakh has been profoundly shaped by influences from South Asia and beyond. In detailed empirical case-studies the contributors document and analyse change and continuities in this region brought about by colonialism, independence and modernisation. In an introductory review essay highlighting emerging themes and continuing debates in the scholarship on Ladakh, the editors argue for the need to situate Ladakh in an Indian and South Asian context, while also taking into account its cultural, linguistic and historical ties with Tibet. Studies from the neighbouring (sub)regions of Kargil, Ladakh, Zangskar and Baltistan are brought together to make an important contribution to the anthropological and sociological literature on development and modernity, as well as to Ladakh, Tibetan and South Asian studies

    Abstract: Mit dem postindustriellen Umbau der Stadt seit Ende der 1970er Jahre bestimmen Bewegung und Sport das Bild des öffentlichen Raumes. Die theatralisierte und musealisierte Innen-Stadt bietet sich als Bühne für Bewegungsspiele, Tanz und Trendsportarten an und dient als Kulisse für prestigeträchtige Sportevents. Stadien wandeln sich von funktionalen Sportstätten zu agonalen Repräsentationsräumen der postindustriellen Gesellschaft. Die Konzentration der Städte auf eventisierten Sport im Zuge globaler städtischer Konkurrenzkämpfe hat aber auch eine Kehrseite - sie bewirkt eine Vernachlässigung der Bewegungsräume in marginalisierten Stadtteilen. Der interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Band will dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen bebauter Umwelt und Bewegungsaktivitäten zum Thema machen und damit einen - bislang in der Stadtforschung und in der Bewegungsforschung wenig beachteten - Blick auf das Verhältnis zwischen der Wahrnehmung und Bewegungserfahrung der städtischen Akteure und dem urbanen Raum werfen

    Abstract: Research on social entrepreneurship is finally catching up to its rapidly growing potential. In The Search for Social Entrepreneurship, Paul Light explores this surge of interest to establish the state of knowledge on this growing phenomenon and suggest directions for future research. Light begins by outlining the debate on how to define social entrepreneurship, a concept often cited and lauded but not necessarily understood. A very elemental definition would note that it involves individuals, groups, networks, or organizations seeking sustainable change via new ideas on how governments, nonprofits, and businesses can address significant social problems. That leaves plenty of gaps, however, and without adequate agreement on what the term means, we cannot measure it effectively. The unsatisfying results are apple-to-orange comparisons that make replication and further research difficult. The subsequent section examines the four main components of social entrepreneurship: ideas, opportunities, organizations, and the entrepreneurs themselves. The copious information available about each has yet to be mined for lessons on making social entrepreneurship a success. The third section draws on Light's original survey research on 131 high-performing nonprofits, exploring how they differ across the four key components. The fourth and final section offers recommendations for future action and research in this burgeoning field.
