    Abstract: Abstract: Die Community der Pickup Artists (PUAs) bildet den Gegenstand der vorliegenden Forschungsarbeit. Die überwiegend männlichen Mitglieder beschäftigen sich mit der ,Kunst der Verführung‘ und imitieren dabei die Strategien von sexuell erfolgreichen Männern. Es wurde der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern in der Pickup-Community Männlichkeiten konstruiert werden. Das Gruppendiskussionsverfahren als qualitative Forschungsmethode ermöglichte es, der Forschungsfrage nachzugehen. Durch die Analyse zeigte sich, dass Mann-Sein für die PUAs nicht ,von Natur aus‘ vorhanden ist, sondern erworben und gesichert werden muss. Die Gefahr, das Mann-Sein und die damit verbundenen und von den PUAS als positiv bewerteten Merkmale zu verlieren, besteht der Analyse zufolge grundsätzlich, sofern das Mann-Sein nicht aktiv gesichert wird. Dies wird als ein sehr beschwerlicher Weg konstruiert: Es bedarf ,harter Arbeit‘ an sich selbst, um zu lernen sich zu „verhalten, wie ein Mann sich verhalten sollte“ – dieses Projekt der Selbstoptimierung wird als der „Weg des wahren Mannes“ bezeichnet. Die Diskussionsgruppen nahmen unabhängig voneinander mit dem gleichen Vokabular auf verschiedene Männlichkeiten Bezug, sodass durch die Analyse drei verschiedene Männlichkeitstypen herausgearbeitet werden konnten. Diese sind für das Funktionieren von Pickup ausschlaggebend. Die Männlichkeitstypen verdeutlichen, dass nicht nur das Erwerben von Männlichkeit und die Aneignung eines vergeschlechtlichten Habitus, sondern auch Geschlechterinszenierungen (doing gender) bewusst gemacht werden können und aktiv beeinflusst werden. Letztlich erhält und manifestiert die Community der Pickup Artists die heteronormative und androzentristische Gesellschaft und ihre soziale Ordnung

    Abstract: This book looks at sovereignty as a particular form of power and politics. It shows that the fate of bodies in the transition from life to death can provide a key to understanding fundamental ways in which sovereignty is claimed and performed. The contributions analyse (post-)conflict as well as non-conflict contexts, which too often are studied in isolation from one another. Focusing on contemporary issues rather than the equally important historical dimensions, they all grapple with the questions of who governs the dead bodies, how, why and with what effects. The book analyses how dead bodies are placed and dealt with in spaces between competing, overlapping and nested sovereign orders, under normal as well as exceptional conditions. It looks at contributions that draw on psychoanalysis, critical theory, the structuralist-functionalist anthropology of burial rituals and recent ideas of agency and materiality. The book first explains the efforts of states to contain and separate out dead bodies in particular sites. It explores the ways in which such efforts of containment are negotiated and contested in struggles between different entities that claim the dead bodies. The book then shows how entities that claim sovereignty produce effects of sovereignty by challenging and transgressing the laws regarding the legitimate use of violence and how dead bodies should be treated with dignity

    Abstract: "Wives and Wanderers in a New Guinea Highlands Society brings to the reader anthropologist Marie Reay's field research from the 1950s and 1960s on women's lives in the Wahgi Valley, Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Dramatically written, each chapter adds to the main story that Reay wanted to tell, contrasting young girls' freedom to court and choose partners, with the constraints (and violence) they were to experience as married women. This volume provides readable ethnographic material for undergraduate courses, in whole or in part. It will be of interest to students and scholars of gender relations, anthropology and feminism, Melanesia and the Pacific. The material in this book, which Reay had written by 1965 but never published, remains startlingly contemporary and relevant. Marie Olive Reay was a social anthropologist who did research in Australian indigenous communities and in the Wahgi Valley in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Employed at The Australian National University from 1959 to 1988 when she retired, Reay passed away in 2004. In 2011 this manuscript was found in her personal papers, reconstructed, and edited by Francesca Merlan, augmented here by an additional introduction by eminent anthropologist of the Highlands, and of gender, Marilyn Strathern. Had this manuscript appeared when Reay apparently completed it in its present form - around 1965 - it would have been the first published ethnography of women's lives in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Its retrieval from Reay's papers, and availability now, adds a new dimension to works on gender relations in Melanesian societies, and to the history of Australian and Pacific anthropology"--Publisher's website.

    Abstract: Abstract: "Hunderttausende von Frauen beteiligten sich mutig an der Aufstandsbewegung gegen das Mubarak-Regime in Ägypten und forderten über soziale, generationelle und ideologische Grenzen hinweg Brot, Freiheit und Würde. Nur eine kleine Minderheit artikulierte explizit strategische Genderinteressen. Ausgehend von diesem Befund und inspiriert von Erkenntnissen der Social Movement Theory untersucht der Artikel unterschiedliche Strömungen der heterogenen ägyptischen Frauenbewegungen im Hinblick auf Interessenlagen, Strategien und Ausstrahlungskraft, sowie auf transnationale Einflüsse und Verflechtungen. Dabei wird insbesondere die Frage erhellt, weshalb zahlreiche Frauen aktiv islamistische Bewegungen unterstützen, die für ihre eigenen Interessen und Agenden nachteilig zu sein scheinen. Comment s'intègrent-elles à la sociabilité virile des commissariats ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions auxquelles Geneviève Pruvost répond dans cet ouvrage pionnier qui constitue la première recherche française d'ampleur sur la féminisation de la police. L'étude fouillée - qualitative et quantitative - permet de suivre et de comprendre les trajectoires des « femmes policiers », de la fabrique familiale de la vocation à la gestion de la carrière, de la scolarité aux coulisses du métier, du travail sur la voie publique aux arrangements avec le conjoint, de l'accomplissement des tâches nobles au « sale boulot ». Elle montre comment, en adoptant les codes virils en vigueur, ces femmes tentent d'échapper aux stéréotypes de fragilité et d'indisponibilité qui leur sont encore trop souvent accolés. Ce livre met ainsi l'accent sur les arrangements, les processus d'« asexuation » et les possibles neutralisations d'un espace fortement sexualisé, tout en pointant les discriminations et les contraintes fortes qui entravent la progression des femmes dans la profession. Geneviève Pruvost cerne, au plus près et avec subtilité, la diversité des interactions entre hommes et femmes dans la police nationale. À l'originalité d'une démarche attentive à la mobilité de genre, s'ajoute celle d'une approche compréhensive des principes fondateurs de l'institution policière.

    Abstract: The essays collected together in this book reflect the author's varied experiences in the realms of politics and social struggle; he notes that they cannot be separated from his other experiences in his country, Egypt, over the years. These experiences extend from popular culture or folklore, through the wider political world of African liberation politics, to the Committee for the Defense of National Culture. This book is like a long trip through African culture from the 1950s to the beginning of the 21st century. These essays will most likely provoke a lot of memories, sweet and bitter; with maybe the bitter ones as the more lasting. The author notes that it appears as if the only relationship that seems to have mattered, for a long time, for the Egyptians with the rest of Africa was the river Nile, which joins the country to ten other countries, while a vast desert stands in-between. Such separation ignores the ancient relations between Pharaonic Egypt and the rest of Africa, and the role of Egypt in supporting many liberation movements on the continent. The author has set himself some tough questions in this book: Is it legitimate today to use race to sub-divide the African continent? Can this, moreover, be simply done as if race is ahistorical or an idealistic concept of identities? Or are we going to talk about Arabism in Egypt, Libya or Maghreb as if it were an identity gained with the advent of the Arabs, implying that these were 'lands with no people' - a sort of 'No Man's Land?' Or was this a fragile space that could not confront the invading empire? Or will Arabism equate with Bantuism or negroism sometimes, and Hausa and Swahili cultures at other times? These are the types of issues that Helmi Sharawy examines in this very important book. Experiences that inform this book began with the author's first encounter in March 1956, with some African youths who were in Cairo for higher studies or as representatives of liberation movements with whom he worked as an intermediary with the Egyptian national state, which work left on him an everlasting impression.

    Description / Table of Contents: In the 1950s and 1960s, images of children appeared everywhere, from movies to milk cartons, their smiling faces used to sell everything, including war. In this provocative book, Margaret Peacock offers an original account of how Soviet and American leaders used emotionally charged images of children in an attempt to create popular support for their policies at home and abroad. Groups on either side of the Iron Curtain pushed visions of endangered, abandoned, and segregated children to indict the enemy's state and its policies. Though the Cold War is often characterized as an ideological divide between the capitalist West and the communist East, Peacock demonstrates a deep symmetry in how Soviet and American propagandists mobilized similar images to similar ends, despite their differences. Based on extensive research spanning fourteen archives and three countries, Peacock tells a new story of the Cold War, seeing the conflict not simply as a divide between East and West, but as a struggle between the producers of culture and their target audiences.--

    Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Abstract: This volume explores the normative foundations of fair(er) relations in the immigration society. The focus is on the concept of solidarity. Beyond a »solidarity among intimates«, immigration society solidarity designates an active practice, which while not necessarily commonality-based, entails both a concrete opponent as well as a political concept of society. This idea is questioned and further developed in the contributions in terms of its theoretical, moral, educational, philosophical, and sociological dimensions.

    Abstract: This book discusses the forms and dynamics of political processes in rural India with a special emphasis on West Bengal, the nation's fourth-most populous state. West Bengal's political distinction stems from its long legacy of a Left-led coalition government for more than thirty years and its land reform initiatives. The book closely looks at how people from different castes, religions, and genders represent themselves in local governments, political parties, and in the social movements in West Bengal. At the same time it addresses some important questions: Is there any new pattern of politics emerging at the margins? How does this pattern of politics correspond with the current discourse of governance?     Abstract: The sectional conflict over slavery in the United States was not only a clash between labour systems and political ideologies but also a viscerally felt part of the lives of antebellum Americans. This book contributes to the growing field of emotions history by exploring how specific emotions shaped Americans' perceptions of, and responses to, the sectional conflict in order to explain why it culminated in disunion and war. Emotions from indignation to jealousy were inextricably embedded in antebellum understandings of morality, citizenship, and political affiliation. Their arousal in the context of political debates encouraged Northerners and Southerners alike to identify with antagonistic sectional communities and to view the conflicts between them as worth fighting over. Michael E. Woods synthesizes two schools of thought on Civil War causation: the fundamentalist, which foregrounds deep-rooted economic, cultural, and political conflict, and the revisionist, which stresses contingency, individual agency, and collective passion

    Abstract: The teenager has often appeared in culture as an anxious figure,the repository for American dreams and worst nightmares, at once on the brinkof success and imminent failure. Spotlighting the "troubled teen" as a site ofpop cultural, medical, and governmental intervention, Chronic Youthtraces the teenager as a figure through which broad threats to the normativeorder have been negotiated and contained. Examining television, popular novels, science journalism, newmedia, and public policy, Julie Passanante Elman shows how the teenager becamea cultural touchstone for shifting notions of able-bodiedness,heteronormativity, and neoliberalism in the late twentieth century. By the late1970s, media industries as well as policymakers began developing new problem-driven‘edutainment’ prominently featuring narratives of disability—from theimmunocompromised The Boy in the Plastic Bubble to ABC’s After SchoolSpecials and teen sick-lit. Although this conjoining of disabilityand adolescence began as a storytelling convention, disability became much morethan a metaphor as the process of medicalizing adolescence intensified by the1990s, with parenting books containing neuro-scientific warnings about theincomplete and volatile "teen brain." Undertaking a cultural history of youththat combines disability, queer, feminist, and comparative media studies, Elmanoffers a provocative new account of how American cultural producers,policymakers, and medical professionals have mobilized discourses of disabilityto cast adolescence as a treatable "condition." By tracing the teen’s unevenpassage from postwar rebel to 21st century patient, Chronic Youth showshow teenagers became a lynchpin for a culture of perpetual rehabilitation andneoliberal governmentality

    Abstract: This book is about the creation and development of ethnic identity among the Kamba. Comprising approximately one-eighth of Kenya's population, the British considered the Kamba East Africa's premier 'martial race' by the mid-twentieth century: a people with an apparent aptitude for soldiering. The reputation, indeed, was one that Kamba leaders used to leverage financial rewards from the colonial state. However, beneath this simplistic exterior was a maelstrom of argument and debate. Men and women, young and old, Christians and non-Christians, and the elite and poor fought over the virtues they considered worthy of honor in their communities, and which of their visions should constitute 'Kamba' identity. Based on extensive archival research and more than 150 interviews, Ethnicity and Empire is one of the first books to analyze the complex process of building and shaping 'tribe' over more than two centuries. It reveals new ways to think about themes crucial to the history of colonialism: soldiering, 'loyalty', martial race, and indeed the nature of empire itself

    Abstract: Abstract: "Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, wie die kroatischen Frauenorganisationen zum gleichstellungspolitischen Wandel in Kroatien beitrugen und welche Mitteln sie bei der Formulierung, Initiierung und Verabschiedung innovativer Gleichstellungspolitik auf staatlicher Ebene in Kroatien nutzten. Die Autorin argumentiert, dass die kroatischen Frauen-NGOs als Normadvokaten mit einer Doppelstrategie arbeiteten, um auf die Nichteinhaltung von internationalen gleichstellungsspezifischen Normen auf der nationalen und internationalen Ebene aufmerksam zu machen und eine Veränderung zu bewirken. Im Gegensatz zum Klassiker der Normumsetzungsforschung des innenpolitischen Menschenrechtswandels zeigt dieser Beitrag, dass nicht nur handelende nationale Akteure sozialisiert werden müssen, um geschlechtergerecht zu handeln, sondern auch die internationale politische Elite."
