    Abstract: This Element provides an overview of food and foodways in Ancient China, from the earliest humans (~500k BP) up to its historical beginnings: the foundation of the Zhou dynasty (at the start of the 1st millennium BCE). While textual data provides insights on food and diet during China's historical periods, archaeological data is the main source for studying the deep past and reconstructing what people ate, how they ate and with whom they ate it. This Element introduces the plants and animals that formed the building blocks of ancient diets and cuisines, as well as how they created localized lifeways and unifying constructs across ancient China. Foodways, how food was grown, prepared and consumed, was central in the development of differing social, economic and political realities, as it shaped ritual and burial practices, differentiated ethnic groups, solidified community ties and deepened or assuaged social inequalities

    Abstract: Die Statistik war nicht nur symbolische Ressource deutscher Nationalismen - in Daten übersetzt wurde Ethnizität zur verwaltbaren Tatsache.Die Nationalitätenstatistik veränderte ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht nur die Vorstellungen davon, was eine Nation sei, sondern auch Praktiken und Politiken, die sich auf diese Vorstellungen bezogen. Lag an ihrem Beginn die Idee, die offenen Fragen des deutschen Nationaldiskurses nach ethnopolitischen Zugehörigkeiten und Grenzziehungen zu beantworten, wurde sie um 1900 zur wichtigen symbolischen Ressource deutscher Nationalismen. Die Techniken des Erfassens und Kartierens übersetzten das Nationale zudem in eine schalt- und verwaltbare Tatsache staatlicher Ethnopolitik. Zusehends in den Fokus gerieten die östlichen Grenzländer des Deutschen Reichs.Der Autor untersucht die Quantifizierung des Nationalen von den 1860er- bis in die 1940er-Jahre. Über einen Zeitraum von rund 80 Jahren suchten Statistiker nach Wegen, die ethnopolitischen Kategorien von Volk, Nation und "Rasse" in statistische Daten zu übersetzen. Zugleich wurde die Nationalitätenstatistik während des deutschen Zugriffs auf das östliche Europa in beiden Weltkriegen zu einer bevölkerungspolitischen Technologie, die ethnische "Säuberungen" nicht nur denk-, sondern auch umsetzbar machte.Die Studie wurde mit dem Förderpreis der Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Wissenschaften, der Medizin und der Technik ausgezeichnet

    Abstract: Das weltweite Bildungsniveau ist im letzten halben Jahrhundert rasant gestiegen, insbesondere bei Mädchen und jungen Frauen. Das hat auch die Beziehungen zwischen Mann und Frau verändert. Frauen heiraten später, bekommen weniger Kinder, arbeiten länger und verdienen mehr. Dieser Zugewinn an Wissen, Einkommen und auch Macht ist für viele Männer schwer zu ertragen. Abram de Swaan zufolge führt dieses relative Schwinden der männlichen Dominanz zu sozialen und psychologischen Spannungen, die auf die Verletzung des männlichen Ehrgefühls zurückzuführen sind: eine kollektive und individuelle narzisstische Kränkung. Der Autor sieht den Aufstieg der extremen Rechten, des christlichen Fundamentalismus und des Dschihadismus als Reaktion auf die weltweite Emanzipation der Frauen, die offenbar von vielen Männern als bedrohlich wahrgenommen wird. Werden diese Bewegungen fortbestehen, oder sind sie ein letztes Aufbäumen des im Untergang befindlichen Patriarchats?

    Abstract: Gewalt hat im 'langen' 20. Jahrhundert eine Vielzahl von Formen angenommen, die in sehr unterschiedlichem Maße 'sichtbar' geworden sind. Für die Frage der öfentlichen Wahrnehmung von Gewalt haben die (Massen-)Medien in der Regel eine Schlüsselrolle gespielt. Gewalt wurde von ihnen je nach Konstellation und in Abhängigkeit von den Akteuren sehr unterschiedlich thematisiert und bewertet: Manche Formen von Gewalt – etwa solche in Familien, in der Kirche, im Sport oder in Erziehungseinrichtungen – wurden erst spät aufgegriffen und skandalisiert, andere – etwa der Rechtsterrorismus – nur eingeschränkt erfasst.     Abstract: Bisherige Arbeiten zur Migrationsgeschichte verbleiben entweder im nationalen Rahmen oder untersuchen transnationale Organisationen und Prozesse. Kaum finden sich Studien, die diese Ebenen kombinieren. Im vorliegenden Band werden nun Migrationsprozesse und Migrationspolitik in 13 Ländern Europas von der Nachkriegszeit bis in die Gegenwart untersucht. Dabei geht es zum einen um die Migrationsprozesse selbst, um staatliche und behördliche Regulierungsversuche und deren Auswirkungen sowie um die Reaktionen der Einwanderungsgesellschaften und die der Migranten. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Perspektive der Nationalstaaten, um Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede, Parallelen und Sonderwege zu identifizieren, Vergleiche zu ermöglichen und transnationale Prozesse zu erkennen. Vor allem zwischen den west- und osteuropäischen Ländern lassen sich dabei unterschiedliche Phasen erkennen zwischen Nachkriegs- und postkolonialer Migration, Arbeitsmigration, Binnenmigration, vor allem in der Sowjetunion, Ein- und Auswanderungsprozessen nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetimperiums und der Migration aus den Bürgerkriegsstaaten, vor allem aus Syrien und Afghanistan, nach 2010.

    Abstract: In this book, David Patterson offers original insights into the dynamics that underlie the phenomenon of endemic antisemitism, arguing that in all its manifestations, antisemitism is fundamentally anti-Judaism.     Abstract: A History of Anti-Semitism examines the history, culture and literature of antisemitism from antiquity to the present. With contributions from an international team of scholars, whose essays were specially commissioned for this volume, it covers the long history of antisemitism starting with ancient Greece and Egypt, through the anti-Judaism of early Christianity, and the medieval era in both the Christian and Muslim worlds when Jews were defined as 'outsiders,' especially in Christian Europe. This portrayal often led to violence, notably pogroms that often accompanied Crusades, as well as to libels against Jews. The volume also explores the roles of Luther and the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the debate over Jewish emancipation, Marxism, and the social disruptions after World War 1 that led to the rise of Nazism and genocide. Finally, it considers current issues, including the dissemination of hate on social media and the internet and questions of definition and method.

    Abstract: This volume offers new insights into the radical shift in attitudes towards death and the dead body that occurred in temperate Bronze Age Europe. Exploring the introduction and eventual dominance of cremation, Marie-Louise Stig Sørenson and Katharina Rebay-Salisbury apply a case-study approach to investigate how this transformation unfolded within local communities located throughout central to northern Europe. They demonstrate the deep link between the living and the dead body, and propose that the introduction of cremation was a significant ontological challenge to traditional ideas about death. In tracing the responses to this challenge, the authors focus on three fields of action: the treatment of the dead body, the construction of a burial place, and ongoing relationships with the dead body after burial.     Abstract: This comparative study explores three key cultural and political spheres - the Latin west, Byzantium and the Islamic world from Central Asia to the Atlantic - roughly from the emergence of Islam to the fall of Constantinople. These spheres drew on a shared pool of late antique Mediterranean culture, philosophy and science, and they had monotheism and historical antecedents in common. Yet where exactly political and spiritual power lay, and how it was exercised, differed. This book focuses on power dynamics and resource-allocation among ruling elites; the legitimisation of power and property with the aid of religion; and on rulers' interactions with local elites and societies.     Abstract: This timely history explores the entry, reception and resettlement of refugees across twentieth-century Britain. Focusing on four cohorts of refugees - Jewish and other refugees from Nazism; Hungarians in 1956; Ugandan Asians expelled by Idi Amin; and Vietnamese 'boat people' who arrived in the wake of the fall of Saigon - Becky Taylor deftly integrates refugee history with key themes in the history of modern Britain. She thus demonstrates how refugees' experiences, rather than being marginal, were emblematic of some of the principal developments in British society. Arguing that Britain's reception of refugees was rarely motivated by humanitarianism, this book reveals the role of Britain's international preoccupations, anxieties and sense of identity; and how refugees' reception was shaped by voluntary efforts and the changing nature of the welfare state. Based on rich archival sources, this study offers a compelling new perspective on changing ideas of Britishness and the place of 'outsiders' in modern Britain

Dunstan constructs a narrative of black struggles for rights and citizenship that spans most of the twentieth century, encompassing a wide range of people and movements from France and the United States, the French Caribbean and African colonies. She explores how black scholars and activists grappled with the connections between culture, race and citizenship and access to rights, mapping African American and Francophone black intellectual collaborations from the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 to the March on Washington in 1963. Connecting the independent archives of black activist organizations within America and France with those of international institutions such as the League of Nations, the United Nations and the Comintern, Dunstan situates key black intellectuals in a transnational framework. She reveals how questions of race and nation intersected across national and imperial borders and illuminates the ways in which black intellectuals simultaneously constituted and reconfigured notions of Western civilization

Beginning with an examination of India's evolving role in the world economy, he deals successively with the movement of people out of and into India, the role played by Indian soldiers in a series of conflicts from the mid-eighteenth to the late twentieth century, the place of India in the global circulation of ideas and cultural productions and the relationships established between Indians and others both abroad and at home. Challenging dominant state-centred histories by focusing on the lived experiences of people, Markovits demonstrates that the multiple connections established between India and other lands did not necessarily result in mutual knowledge, but were often marked by misunderstanding

    Abstract: By their social and material context as markers of graves, dedications and public signs of honour, inscriptions offer a distinct perspective on the social lives, occupations, family belonging, mobility, ethnicity, religious affiliations, public honour and legal status of Roman women ranging from slaves and freedwomen to women of the elite and the imperial family, both in Rome and in Italian and provincial towns. They thus shed light on women who are largely overlooked by the literary sources. The wide range of inscriptions and graffiti included in this book show women participating not only in their families and households but also in the social and professional life of their cities. Moreover, they offer us a glimpse of women's own voices. Marital ideals and problems, love and hate, friendship, birth and bereavement, joy and hardship all figure in inscriptions, revealing some of the richness and variety of life in the ancient world.

In this new transnational history, Micah Alpaugh demonstrates the connections between the most prominent causes of the era, as they drew upon each other's models to seek unprecedented changes in government. As Friends of Freedom, activists shared ideas and strategies internationally, creating a chain of broad-based campaigns that mobilized the American Revolution, British Parliamentary Reform, Irish nationalism, movements for religious freedom, abolitionism, the French Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, and American party politics.     Abstract: Immigration makes America what it is and is formative for what it will become. America was settled by three different models of immigration, all of which persist to the present. The Virginia Colony largely equated immigration with the arrival of laborers, who had few rights. Massachusetts welcomed those who shared the religious views of the founders but excluded those whose beliefs challenged prevailing orthodoxy. Pennsylvania valued pluralism, becoming the most diverse colony in religion, language, and culture. A fourth, anti-immigration model also emerged during the colonial period, and was often fueled by populist leaders who stoked fears about newcomers. Arguing that the Pennsylvania model has best served the country, this book makes key recommendations for future immigration reform. Given the highly controversial nature of immigration in the United States, this second edition - updated to analyze policy changes in the Obama and Trump administrations - provides valuable insights for academics and policymakers

    Abstract: Die erste überregionale Gesamtdarstellung über Verfolgungsdruck und Handlungsräume von Mischehen im Nationalsozialismus und in der Nachkriegszeit. Über 11.000 deutsche Juden überlebten den Holocaust, weil sie mit einem nichtjüdischen Partner verheiratet waren. Auf Grund ihrer familialen Verbindung zur »Volksgemeinschaft« nahm das NS-Regime sie von zentralen Verfolgungsmaßnahmen, Deportation und Vernichtung aus. Im Sprachgebrauch der Nationalsozialisten galten sie daher als »privilegiert«. Dennoch war die Mischehe keine Garantie für ein Überleben. Vor allem lokale Behörden gingen immer radikaler gegen die Mischehen vor. Viele Betroffene verloren dadurch nicht nur ihre Existenzgrundlage, sondern oft auch Freiheit und Leben. Im Zentrum von Maximilian Strnads Studie stehen die Handlungsräume der verschiedenen Familienmitglieder. Der Autor zeigt, wie unterschiedlich sich die Verfolgung in den Familien jüdischer Männer und Frauen auswirkte. Deutlich werden die gravierenden Konsequenzen für die Ehepartner und Kinder. Dennoch verfügten sie über Handlungsspielräume, die sie zu Gunsten der Familie einsetzten. Strnad weitet den Blick auch auf die Zeit nach 1945. Er beschreibt die Ernüchterung der Überlebenden, die das Stigma der »Privilegierung« nicht ablegen konnten und die deshalb kaum Anerkennung und Unterstützung fanden.

    Abstract: Der Autor, Professor für Aussereuropäische Geschichte an der Universität Duisburg-Essen und Verfasser zahlreicher Veröffentlichungen zur Geschichte Afrikas (vgl. u.a. ID-A 40/17), präsentiert mit der vorliegenden Biografie ein Werk über den vergleichsweise unbekannten Afrikaforscher Heinrich Barth, von dem er feststellt, dass dieser als "der gröt︣e aller Forscher der am meisten vernachlässigste ist." Marx sieht Barth als Gelehrten auf einer Bedeutungsebene mit Alexander v. Humboldt, dessen Forschungen geprägt von den Ideen der Aufklärung und der Philosophie Hegels gewesen sind. Das Buch basiert auf einer beeindruckenden Quellendichte, immer wieder lässt der Autor Heinrich Barth mithilfe von dessen umfangreichen Briefnachlass und anderer Reisenotizen zu Wort kommen. Bemerkenswert ist dabei die deutliche Abgrenzung Barths zu den imperialistischen und rassistischen Ideen der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und die Offenheit, mit der er afrikanische Völker und ihre Kulturen beschreibt und über sie urteilt. Vertiefende Ergänzung zu Heinrich Barths eigenen Reisebeschreibungen (vgl. u.a.     Abstract: Hacker und Haecksen zählen zur Avantgarde der Computerisierung. Seit den späten 1970er-Jahren bildeten sie sich in der Bundesrepublik und in der DDR zu eigensinnigen ComputernutzerInnen mit einschlägigem Wissen heraus. Sie eigneten sich das Medium spielerisch an, schufen Kontakträume und brachten sich so aktiv in den Prozess der Computerisierung ein. Durch ihre Grenzüberschreitungen zeigten sie dabei Chancen und Risiken der Digitalisierung auf. Julia Gül Erdogan geht der Entstehung der Hackerkulturen in Ost- und Westdeutschland nach. Sie analysiert, wie deren teils subversive Praktiken Machtgefüge in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft herausforderten. Zugleich verdeutlicht die Arbeit Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der frühen sub- und gegenkulturellen Computernutzung in den beiden deutschen Teilstaaten.

    Abstract: Die Arbeitsmigration zählt zu den prägenden gesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozessen der deutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte. 14 Millionen »Gastarbeiter« kamen zwischen 1955 und 1973 in die Bundesrepublik, etwa 3 Millionen von ihnen kehrten nicht in ihre Heimatländer zurück. Vor allem Türkeistämmige blieben nach dem Anwerbestopp häufiger in Deutschland als die Arbeitskräfte aus anderen Ländern. Wie keine andere Stadt steht Berlin bis heute für die Einwanderung aus der Türkei. Stefan Zeppenfeld untersucht den Wandel der türkischen Arbeitswelten von ihren Anfängen in den 1960er Jahren bis zur Wiedervereinigung. Ausgehend von der »Gastarbeit« im industriellen Großbetrieb spürt er in seiner Studie am Beispiel West-Berlins dem Übergang in andere Branchen nach. Er zeigt, wie der öffentliche Dienst auch für Migrantinnen und Migranten attraktive Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten eröffnete, zeichnet den schwierigen Weg in die gewerbliche Selbstständigkeit nach und legt illegale Beschäftigungsformen als alternative Verdienstmöglichkeit offen.     Abstract: Geschichts- und literaturwissenschaftliche Modellstudien zur Affektivität des Antisemitismus vom 19. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert. Um die Beharrlichkeit des Antisemitismus zu verstehen, muss man sich mit seinen Emotionen beschäftigen. In zehn historiographischen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Fallstudien wird in diesem Band der Affektivität des Antisemitismus vom 19. bis ins 21. Jahrhundert nachgegangen. Was für Gefühle werden auf welche Weise in der Literatur, durch visuelle Darstellungen, unterschiedliche mediale Inszenierungen oder pogromartige Gewaltexzesse erzeugt? Wie machen antisemitische Propagandisten, Publizisten und Täter sich diese Affektstrategien zunutze? Wie wurde die Relevanz der Emotionen im Antisemitismus zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten theoretisch reflektiert und was bedeutet dies für die Möglichkeiten seiner Bekämpfung? Ist Antisemitismus noch der richtige Begriff, um all dies adäquat zu erfassen, oder sollten wir besser vom antijüdischen Ressentiment sprechen?     Abstract: Der Coupe à la Garçonne: Ikone der Moderne und Gegenstand erbitterter Kontroverse um weibliche Selbstbestimmung. Nicht nur in Berlin eigneten sich Frauen aller sozialen Schichten massenhaft den revolutionären Bubikopf an - trotz vielfältiger Widerstände aus der patriarchalisch geprägten Gesellschaft. Im Mittelpunkt der vehement geführten Kontroverse stand die "vermännlichte", die androgyne Frau, die das traditionelle Bild von Weiblichkeit in Frage stellte. Dennoch trafen viele Frauen ihre persönliche, eigensinnige Entscheidung. Der Bubikopf wurde von ihnen als Chiffre der Moderne erlebt, als Zeichen für Selbstbestimmtheit und Emanzipation. Helga Lüdtke untersucht den Bubikopf in seiner Bild- und Zeichenhaftigkeit, seinen politischen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen, religiösen und ideologischen Deutungszusammenhängen - aus der Perspektive des Friseurhandwerks, der konsumgeschichtlichen Zusammenhänge, der Körpergeschichte, der Geschlechtergeschichte sowie der Unterhaltungs- und Kulturgeschichte. In der Synthese entsteht ein Panoptikum der Weimarer Jahre, das auch in seiner reichen, zum Teil farbigen Bebilderung der Methodik von "Geschichte als Collage" folgt

    Abstract: Die Arbeitsmigration zählt zu den prägenden gesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozessen der deutschen Nachkriegsgeschichte. 14 Millionen »Gastarbeiter« kamen zwischen 1955 und 1973 in die Bundesrepublik, etwa 3 Millionen von ihnen kehrten nicht in ihre Heimatländer zurück. Vor allem Türkeistämmige blieben nach dem Anwerbestopp häufiger in Deutschland als die Arbeitskräfte aus anderen Ländern. Wie keine andere Stadt steht Berlin bis heute für die Einwanderung aus der Türkei. Stefan Zeppenfeld untersucht den Wandel der türkischen Arbeitswelten von ihren Anfängen in den 1960er Jahren bis zur Wiedervereinigung. Ausgehend von der »Gastarbeit« im industriellen Großbetrieb spürt er in seiner Studie am Beispiel West-Berlins dem Übergang in andere Branchen nach. Er zeigt, wie der öffentliche Dienst auch für Migrantinnen und Migranten attraktive Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten eröffnete, zeichnet den schwierigen Weg in die gewerbliche Selbstständigkeit nach und legt illegale Beschäftigungsformen als alternative Verdienstmöglichkeit offen. „Die Arbeit überzeugt insgesamt durch die breite Darstellung der komplexen Vielfältigkeit der Arbeitswelten türkeistämmiger Personen in West-Berlin. Da Zeppenfeld die "Gastarbeiterposition" als Ausgangspunkt sieht, bleibt jedoch die Frage offen, in welchem Verhältnis die beruflichen Mobilitäten in der Bundesrepublik zu den Arbeitserfahrungen und die im Herkunftsland erworbenen Qualifikationen standen und inwiefern sich die beruflichen Mobilitäten im grenzüberschreitenden Rahmen veränderten. Zeppenfeld überwindet den bisherigen engen Blick auf die Migrationspolitik und die branchenspezifische Fokussierung auf die Industrie. Die Vielfalt türkischer Arbeitswelten sowie die damit verbundenen strukturellen Hürden und Handlungsspieleräume werden offengelegt. Es wird deutlich, dass die Entwicklung der "türkischen" Arbeitswelten politisch nicht vollständig kontrollierbar war. Sowohl in abhängiger als auch selbstständiger Form trugen Türkeistämmige zum Wandel der bundesdeutschen Arbeitswelten bei. Zeppenfeld leistet mit seiner Studie somit nicht nur einen wichtigen Beitrag zur sozialhistorischen Migrationsgeschichte, sondern auch zur bundesdeutschen Gesellschaftsgeschichte und zum Forschungsfeld der Geschichte der Arbeit im zeithistorischen Kontext“ (sehepunkte.de)

    Abstract: Hacker und Haecksen zählen zur Avantgarde der Computerisierung. Seit den späten 1970er-Jahren bildeten sie sich in der Bundesrepublik und in der DDR zu eigensinnigen ComputernutzerInnen mit einschlägigem Wissen heraus. Sie eigneten sich das Medium spielerisch an, schufen Kontakträume und brachten sich so aktiv in den Prozess der Computerisierung ein. Durch ihre Grenzüberschreitungen zeigten sie dabei Chancen und Risiken der Digitalisierung auf. Julia Gül Erdogan geht der Entstehung der Hackerkulturen in Ost- und Westdeutschland nach. Sie analysiert, wie deren teils subversive Praktiken Machtgefüge in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft herausforderten. Zugleich verdeutlicht die Arbeit Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der frühen sub- und gegenkulturellen Computernutzung in den beiden deutschen Teilstaaten.

    Abstract: In den 1950er bis 1970er Jahren suchten Millionen von Migranten aus dem Mezzogiorno, dem Süden Italiens, Arbeit in den Boomstädten Norditaliens und der Bundesrepublik. Während die Arbeitsmigranten innerhalb Italiens wegen der schwachen Nationalisierung markante soziale und kulturelle Grenzen überquerten, erleichterten der deutsch-italienische Anwerbevertrag von 1955 und die Einführung der Freizügigkeit ab 1961 den Grenzübertritt innerhalb der Europäischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft. Waren den Migranten die Industriestädte Turin und München im fernen Norden Europas daher gleich fremd? Und waren sie dort auf ähnliche Art "andere"?

By focusing on the perspectives of slaves themselves, rather than their owners, she gives voice to a group that is often rendered silent by the historical record.     Abstract: Medieval slavery has received little attention relative to slavery in ancient Greece and Rome and in the early modern Atlantic world. This imbalance in the scholarship has led many to assume that slavery was of minor importance in the Middle Ages. In fact, the practice of slavery continued unabated across the globe throughout the medieval millennium. This volume - the final volume in The Cambridge World History of Slavery - covers the period between the fall of Rome and the rise of the transatlantic plantation complexes by assembling twenty-three original essays, written by scholars acknowledged as leaders in their respective fields. The volume demonstrates the continual and central presence of slavery in societies worldwide between 500 CE and 1420 CE.     Abstract: Irish emigration to America is one of the clich es of modern Irish history; much less familiar is the reverse process. Who were the people who chose to return to Ireland? What motivated them? How did this affect Irish society? While many European countries were somewhat Americanised in this period, the Irish case was unique as so many Irish families had members in America.     Abstract: Social Control in Late Antiquity: The Violence of Small Worlds explores the small-scale communities of late antiquity - households, monasteries, and schools - where power was a question of personal relationships. When fathers, husbands, teachers, abbots, and slave-owners asserted their own will, they saw themselves as maintaining the social order, and expected law and government to reinforce their rule.     Abstract: In the Atlantic World, different groups were aromatically classified in opposition to other ethnic, gendered, and class assemblies due to an economic necessity that needed certain bodies to be defined as excremental, which culminated in the creation of a progressive tautology that linked Africa and waste through a conceptual hendiadys born of capitalist licentiousness. The African subject was defined as a scented object, appropriated as filthy to create levels of ownership through discourse that marked African peoples as unable to access spaces of Western modernity. Embodied cultural knowledge was potent enough to alter the biological function of the five senses to create a European olfactory consciousness made to sense the African other as foul. Fascinating, informative, and deeply researched, The Smell of Slavery exposes that concerns with pungency within the Western self were emitted outward upon the freshly dug outhouse of the mass slave grave called the Atlantic World

    Abstract: Since the seventeenth century, scholars have argued that kinship as an organizing principle and political order are antithetical. This book shows that this was simply not the case. Kinship, as a principle of legitimacy and in the shape of dynasties, was fundamental to political order. Throughout the last one and a half millennia of European and Middle Eastern history, elite families and polities evolved in symbiosis. By demonstrating this symbiosis as a basis for successful polities, Peter Haldén unravels long-standing theories of the state and of modernity. Most social scientists focus on coercion as a central facet of the state and indeed of power. Instead, Halden argues that much more attention must be given to collaboration, consent and common identity and institutions as elements of political order. He also demonstrates that democracy and individualism are not necessary features of modernity.

    Abstract: Cities of Strangers illuminates life in European towns and cities as it was for the settled, and for the 'strangers' or newcomers who joined them between 1000 and 1500. Some city-states enjoyed considerable autonomy which allowed them to legislate on how newcomers might settle and become citizens in support of a common good. Such communities invited bankers, merchants, physicians, notaries and judges to settle and help produce good urban living. Dynastic rulers also shaped immigration, often inviting groups from afar to settle and help their cities flourish. All cities accommodated a great deal of difference - of language, religion, occupation - in shared spaces, regulated by law. But when, from around 1350, plague began regularly to occur within European cities, this benign cycle began to break down. High mortality rates led eventually to demographic crises and, as a result, less tolerant and more authoritarian attitudes emerged, resulting in violent expulsions of even long-settled groups.     Abstract: The 1947 Partition had a major impact on issues of citizenship and rights in India and Pakistan in the decades that followed. Boundaries of Belonging shows how citizenship evolves at a time of political transition and what this meant for ordinary people, by directing attention away from South Asia's Partition 'hotspots' - Bengal and Punjab - to Partition's 'hinterlands' of Uttar Pradesh and Sindh. The analysis, based on rich archival research and fieldwork, brings out commonalities, differences, and the mutual co-construction of the 'citizen' in both places. It also reveals the way in which developments across the border, such as communal violence, could directly impact on minority rights in its neighbour. Questioning stereotypes of an increasingly 'authoritarian' Pakistan and 'democratic' India, Sarah Ansari and William Gould make a major contribution to recent scholarship that suggests the differences between India and Pakistan are overstated

    Abstract: This is an important, revisionist account of the origins of the British Empire in Asia in the early modern period. David Veevers uncovers a hidden world of transcultural interactions between servants of the English East India Company and the Asian communities and states they came into contact with, revealing how it was this integration of Europeans into non-European economies, states and societies which was central to British imperial and commercial success rather than national or mercantilist enterprise. As their servants skilfully adapted to this rich and complex environment, the East India Company became enfranchised by the eighteenth century with a breadth of privileges and rights - from governing sprawling metropolises to trading customs-free. In emphasising the Asian genesis of the British Empire, this book sheds new light on the foreign frameworks of power which fuelled the expansion of Global Britain in the early modern world.

    Abstract: "This is an important, revisionist account of the origins of the British Empire in Asia in the early modern period. David Veevers uncovers a hidden world of transcultural interactions between servants of the English East India Company and the Asian communities and states they came into contact with, revealing how it was this integration of Europeans into non-European economies, states and societies which was central to British imperial and commercial success rather than national or mercantilist enterprise. As their servants skilfully adapted to this rich and complex environment, the East India Company became enfranchised by the eighteenth century with a breadth of privileges and rights - from governing sprawling metropolises to trading customs-free. In emphasising the Asian genesis of the British Empire, this book sheds new light on the foreign frameworks of power which fuelled the expansion of Global Britain in the early modern world."

    Abstract: Why did the Anatolians remain illiterate for so long, although surrounded by people using script? Why and how did they eventually adopt the cuneiform writing system and why did they still invent a second, hieroglyphic script of their own? What did and didn't they write down and what role did Hittite literature, the oldest known literature in any Indo-European language, play? These and many other questions on scribal culture are addressed in this first, comprehensive book on writing, reading, script usage, and literacy in the Hittite kingdom (c.1650-1200 BC).     Abstract: The history and meaning of the Berlin Wall remain controversial, even three decades after its fall. Drawing on an extensive range of archival sources and interviews, this book profiles key memory activists who have fought to commemorate the history of the Berlin Wall and examines their role in the creation of a new German national narrative. With victims, perpetrators and heroes, the Berlin Wall has joined the Holocaust as an essential part of German collective memory. Key Wall anniversaries have become signposts marking German views of the past, its relevance to the present, and the complicated project of defining German national identity. Considering multiple German approaches to remembering the Wall via memorials, trials, public ceremonies, films, and music, this revelatory work also traces how global memory of the Wall has impacted German memory policy. It depicts the power and fragility of state-backed memory projects, and the potential of such projects to reconcile or divide.

    Abstract: This is the first comprehensive account of the population of classical Athens for almost a century. The methodology of earlier scholars has been criticised in general terms but their conclusions have not been seriously challenged. Ben Akrigg reviews and assesses those methodologies and conclusions for the first time and thereby sets the historical demography of Athens on a firm footing. The main focus is on the economic impact of that demography, but new conclusions are presented which have profound implications for our understanding of Athenian society and culture. The book establishes that the Athenian population grew very large in the fifth century BC, before falling dramatically in the final three decades of that century. These changes had important immediate consequences but the city of the fourth century was shaped in fundamental ways by the demographic upheavals of its past.
