    Kurzfassung: Klänge, Töne und Musikwerke haben - nicht zuletzt seit Beginn der Moderne - (national-)kulturell identitätsstiftend gewirkt und tun dies in verschiedenen Kontexten noch heute. Welche medienspezifischen und soziokulturellen Voraussetzungen müssen erfüllt sein, damit Schallwellen eine kollektivbildende Wirkung entfalten können? Welche Parameter (Klang, Ton, Melodie, Rhythmus) sind dabei entscheidend? Wie werden Klänge zur Projektionsfläche ästhetischer Utopien, und existieren Zeit- und Lebensräume, in denen das Phänomen nicht begegnet? Die identitätsbildende Wirkung von Liedern, Hymnen, Klängen und Tönen ist aus geistes- wie gesellschaftswissenschaftlicher Perspektive wiederholt untersucht worden. Bis dato fehlt jedoch eine systematisch-interdisziplinäre Synopse und kritische Reflexion des in den Einzeldisziplinen Erforschten bzw. noch zu Erforschenden. In den vier Abschnitten dieses Bandes, der auf eine Tagung der »Jungen Akademie« in Paris zurückgeht, wird der Frage der Herausbildung kollektiver Identität durch Musik jeweils unter kulturanthropologischem, ästhetischem, historischem und kunstpraktischem Blickwinkel nachgegangen. Die Beiträge von Wissenschaftlern verschiedener Fächer werden ergänzt durch drei Künstlergespräche mit namhaften Komponisten, Dirigenten und Opernsängern.

These and many other questions are discussed and answered in Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization.Over the course of time, the modern world has become dependent on unprecedented flows of materials. Now even the most efficient production processes and the highest practical rates of recycling may not be enough to result in dematerialization rates that would be high enough to negate the rising demand for materials generated by continuing population growth and rising standards of living. This book explores the costs of this dependence and the potential for substantial dematerialization of modern economies. Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization considers the principal materials used throughout history, from wood and stone, through to metals, alloys, plastics, and silicon, describing their extraction and production as well as their dominant applications. The evolving productivities of material extraction, processing, synthesis, finishing, and distribution, and the energy costs and environmental impact of rising material consumption are examined in detail.     Kurzfassung: Während jede Technik nach einer Abwägung ihres Nutzens und Schadens für die Gesellschaft verlangt, zog die zunehmende Technisierung des menschlichen Körpers eine Unschärfe der Grenzen zwischen dem Natürlichen und Technischen nach sich. Dies führte zu Unsicherheiten und im Kontext der Gentechnologie zu jahrzehntelangen Kontroversen über ihre Bewertung. In einer historischen Diskursanalyse erfasst Samia Salem die Auseinandersetzungen über die Rote und Grüne Gentechnologie in der BRD seit den 1960er Jahren in ihrer gesamten Breite. Die Betrachtung der augenscheinlich unüberschaubaren Diskussionen aus der Vogelperspektive ermöglicht die Identifizierung von Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten sowie ihre Zusammenhänge mit anderen Technikdiskursen. Die Analysen konzentrieren sich auf die bedeutenden Akteursgruppen und ihre Rolle für die Diskussion, darunter Mediziner, Biowissenschaftler, Politiker, Interessenverbände, Kirchenvertreter und Theologen sowie Bauern und Landwirte. Begleitet wird die Diskursanalyse u. a. von Fragen nach der Beeinflussung durch die Reproduktionstechnologie oder Kernenergie.

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Rap - für die einen der Inbegriff des subversiven Widerstands einer marginalisierten Unterschicht, für die anderen klanglicher Ausdruck von Homophobie, Misogynie und Gewaltverherrlichung. Vergessen wird dabei oft, dass Rap in erster Linie Partymusik ist. Seit der Entstehung des Stils in den 1970er Jahren ist die HipHop-Kultur ein stark umkämpftes Terrain. Ayla Güler Saieds Studie legt den empirischen Fokus auf die Biographien von Rapperinnen und Rappern verschiedener Genres und bettet diese in die theoretische Analyse der Entstehungsgeschichten des HipHop in Deutschland und den USA ein. Auf diese Weise wird eine neue Perspektive auf das Phänomen Rap enthüllt, welche die Grenzen der hegemonialen Diskurse verschiebt.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: "Often referred to as 'the Big Tomato, ' Sacramento is a city whose makeup is significantly more complex than its agriculture-based sobriquet implies. In River City and Valley Life, seventeen contributors reveal the major transformations to the natural and built environment that have shaped Sacramento and its suburbs, residents, politics, and economics throughout its history. The site that would become Sacramento was settled in 1839, when Johann Augustus Sutter attempted to convert his Mexican land grant into New Helvetia (or 'New Switzerland'). It was at Sutter's sawmill fifty miles to the east that gold was first discovered, leading to the California Gold Rush of 1849. Nearly overnight, Sacramento became a boomtown, and cityhood followed in 1850. Ideally situated at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers, the city was connected by waterway to San Francisco and the surrounding region.
    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Combined with the area's warm and sunny climate, the rivers provided the necessary water supply for agriculture to flourish. The devastation wrought by floods and cholera, however, took a huge toll on early populations and led to the construction of an extensive levee system that raised the downtown street level to combat flooding. Great fortune came when local entrepreneurs built the Central Pacific Railroad, and in 1869 it connected with the Union Pacific Railroad to form the first transcontinental passage. Sacramento soon became an industrial hub and major food-processing center. By 1879, it was named the state capital and seat of government. In the twentieth century, the Sacramento area benefitted from the federal government's major investment in the construction and operation of three military bases and other regional public works projects.

Today, several tribal gaming resorts attract patrons to the area, while 'Old Sacramento' revitalizes the original downtown as it celebrates Sacramento's pioneering past. This environmental history of Sacramento provides a compelling case study of urban and suburban development in California and the American West. As the contributors show, Sacramento has seen its landscape both ravaged and reborn. As blighted areas, rail yards, and riverfronts have been reclaimed, and parks and green spaces created and expanded, Sacramento's identity continues to evolve. As it moves beyond its Gold Rush, Transcontinental Railroad, and government-town heritage, Sacramento remains a city and region deeply rooted in its natural environment"--

    Kurzfassung: Noisy, confrontational, and controversial, industrial music first emerged in the mid-1970s around bands and performance groups who combined avant-garde electronic music with the provocative attitude and style of punk rock. In its early days, bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire produced a genuinely radical form of music bent on recontextualizing the signs and methods of cultural authority in an attempt to liberate listeners from the trappings of modernity. But, as industrial music took on more and more elements of popular music over the course of the 1980s it slowly abandoned its mission. By the mid-1990s, it was seen as simply another style of pop music, and had ironically fallen into the trappings it sought by its very existence to destroy. In "Assimilate", S. Alexander Reed provides the first ever critical history of this fascinating and enigmatic genre tracing industrial music's trajectory from Throbbing Gristle's founding of the record label Industrial Music in 1976, to its peak in popularity on the back of the band Nine Inch Nails in the mid-1990s, and through its decline to the present day. Through a series of revealing explorations of works spanning the entirety of industrial music's past, and drawing on extensive interviews with musicians, record label owners, DJs, and concert promoters, Reed paints a thorough historical picture that includes not only the bands, but the structures that supported them, and the scenes they created. In so doing, he reveals an engaging story of an ideological disintegration and its aftermath. The definitive text on the genre, "Assimilate" is essential reading for fans of industrial music, and scholars and students of popular music alike.
