    Abstract: With his colleagues at the People's Law Office (PLO), Taylor has argued landmark civil rights cases that have exposed corruption and cover-ups within the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and throughout the city's corrupt political machine. He takes the reader from the 1969 murders of Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and Panther Mark Clark--and the historic thirteen years of litigation that followed--through the dogged pursuit of commander Jon Burge, the leader of a torture ring within the CPD that used barbaric methods, including electric shock, to elicit false confessions from suspects. Joining forces with community activists, torture survivors and their families, other lawyers, and local reporters, Taylor and the PLO gathered evidence from multiple cases to bring suit against the CPD officers and the City of Chicago. As the struggle expanded beyond the torture scandal to the ultimately successful campaign to end the death penalty in Illinois, and obtained reparations for many of the torture survivors, it set human rights precedents that have since been adopted across the United States. --From publisher description

Coly employs the concept of "hauntology" to examine postcolonial silences surrounding the African female body as well as female sexuality in the art of African women"--
    Abstract: "Postcolonial Hauntologies is an interdisciplinary and comparative analysis of critical, literary, visual, and performance texts by women from different parts of Africa. While contemporary critical thought and feminist theory have largely integrated the sexual female body into their disciplines, colonial representations of African women's sexuality "haunt" contemporary postcolonial African scholarship which, by maintaining a culture of avoidance about women's sexuality, generates a discursive conscription that ultimately holds the female body hostage. Ayo A. Coly employs the concept of "hauntology" and "ghostly matters" to formulate an explicative framework in which to examine postcolonial silences surrounding the African female body as well as a theoretical framework for discerning the elusive and cautious presences of female sexuality in the texts of African women. In illuminating the pervasive silence about the sexual female body in postcolonial African scholarship, Postcolonial Hauntologies challenges hostile responses to critical and artistic voices that suggest the African female body represents sacred ideological-discursive ground on which one treads carefully, if at all. Coly demonstrates how "ghosts" from the colonial past are countered by discursive engagements with explicit representations of women's sexuality and bodies that emphasize African women's power and autonomy."--

    Abstract: Der alltägliche Rassismus in Grossbritannien, verdeckt oder offen, wurde 2014 von der schwarzen Autorin in einem Blog mit dem gleichlautenden Namen anhand von Beispielen, Statistiken, Zahlen und Fakten aufgezeigt. Sie fordert darin die weisse Bevölkerung auf, sich ihrer Privilegien bewusst zu werden. Das Buch basiert auf einem Blogpost im Jahr 2014 von der im Norden Londons aufgewachsenen Autorin. Ihr in verschiedene, teils direkt aufeinander aufbauende Kapitel eingeteilter Text ist ein eher seltener Einblick in den Rassismus im UK. Alltäglicher Rassismus, offen und verdeckt, Polizeischikanen (v.a. in den 1980er-Jahren), struktureller Rassismus gegen "People of Colour", wie Voreingenommenheit in den Schulen, bei der Arbeitssuche, oder juristische Barrieren und Benachteiligungen, das rein weisse Fernsehen. Sie spricht über die "Farbenblindheit" der weissen Bevölkerung, die Benachteiligungen übersieht, fordert "Check your Privilege". Spricht über rein weissen Feminismus, denn Frau und Schwarz sein bedarf eines anderen Feminismus. Und sie spricht über die Anfeindungen, denen sie aufgrund ihrer Äusserungen ausgesetzt ist. Die Autorin belegt ihre Aussagen mit vielen Beispielen persönlicher aber auch allgemeiner Art, Statistiken, Forschungsergebnissen, Polizei- und Presseberichten. - Trotz des fast ausschliesslichen Fokus auf UK lesenswert für alle, die sich mit Rassismus und Diskriminierung befassen.     Abstract: Die fünf Maghrebstaaten bilden eine Art doppelten Schutzwall für die südlichen Grenzen Europas: in der Sahara und an der Mittelmeerküste.     Abstract: The Mediterranean Sea is now the deadliest region in the world for migrants. Although the death toll has been rising for many years, the EU response remains fragmented and short sighted. Politicians frame these migration flows as an unprecedented crisis and emphasize migration control at the EU's external boundaries. In this context, 'At Europe's Edge' investigates why the EU prioritizes the fortification of its external borders; why migrants nevertheless continue to cross the Mediterranean and to die at sea; and how EU member states on the southern periphery respond to their new role as migration gatekeepers. This work addresses these questions by examining the relationship between the EU and Malta, a small state with an outsized role in migration politics as EU policies place it at the crosshairs of migration flows and controls.

Anhand qualitativer Interviewdaten nimmt der Band das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl der Migranten zu ihrem Ursprungs- und ihrem Aufenthaltsland in den Blick und zeigt Herausforderungen auf, die die Rückkehrer in Ghana meistern müssen. Dabei werden Faktoren wie Sprache und Kulturunterschiede betrachtet. Der Band zeigt, dass der Adaptionsprozess sowohl von Seiten des Migranten als auch der Heimatgesellschaft stattfinden muss
    Abstract: Focusing on the issue of belonging as a substantial human social need, this book studies how skilled Ghanaian returnees cope with their return to their country of origin, depending on their previous experiences in Ghana and the foreign country they lived in for a while. Using the empirical basis of qualitative interview data, the book identifies the relationship between reintegration and sense of belonging, and argues that sense of belonging is a dimension of social reintegration for returning migrants. The key findings of this study show that returnees’ definitions of belonging fall into two categories: individual belonging (belonging to a place) and social/collective belonging (politics of belonging). Within these categories, belonging is defined in relation to being accepted, feeling at home, not being treated differently, having responsibilities and ownership. Individual belonging is thus expressed via feelings of attachment to Ghana as a place, resulting from factors such as memories of cultural and family heritage

    Abstract: Queen Victoria is often cast as a foe of the women's movement - the sovereign who famously declared women's rights to be a 'mad, wicked folly'. Yet these words weren't circulated publicly until after the Queen's death in 1901. Beginning with this insight, this book reveals Victoria as a ruler who captured the imaginations of nineteenth-century feminists. Women's rights activists routinely used Victoria to assert their own claims to citizenship. So popular was their strategy that it even motivated anti-suffragists to launch their own campaign to distance Queen Victoria from feminist initiatives. In highlighting these exchanges, this book draws attention to the intricate and often overlooked connections between the histories of women, the monarchy, and the state. In the process, it sheds light on the development of constitutional monarchy, concepts of female leadership, and the powerful role that the Crown - and queens specifically - have played in modern British culture and politics

    Abstract: Das vorliegende Buch verdeutlicht die hochgradige Komplexität des Verhältnisses von Gesellschaft, Wissenschaft und Klima. Die Tatsache des Klimawandels erfordert eine multidisziplinäre Herangehensweise, die die Vernetzung der drei Systeme erfasst.     Abstract: When, why and how can religion and culture be both sources and places of expression for fundamentalisms, especially when they are connected to politics? Those are the central questions asked throughout this book alongside a discussion on the result when religion, strenthened by culture, is used as a political tool to access moral and social power. Cultural and religious messages often form the basis of decisions, laws and programs made in politics, and have a direct effect on society in general, and on women and gender relations in particular. The various forms taken by fundamentalisms in some African countries and the contexts under which they have emerged, the ways in which they (re)shape identities and relationships between men and women are also analysed in this book. These fundamentalisms are frequently sources of concern in social debates, in feminist and feminine organizations as well as in academia and politics. The manipulations of cultures and religions are becoming progressively political, and consequently cause social discriminations, or even physical, moral and symbolic violence undoubtedly unsustainable. -- Publisher's description

(Profi-)Fußball ist stets zugleich ein Ersatzspielfeld der Politik: Machthaber unterschiedlicher Couleur inszenieren sich, Normen wie Wettbewerbsdenken werden eingeübt, Nationalteams sind ein Indikator dafür, welche Gruppen als zur Nation gehörig betrachtet werden und welche nicht. Anhand von Beispielen aus Deutschland, Frankreich und Russland untersucht Timm Beichelt das Verhältnis von Fußball und Macht. In seinem Essay geht er dabei zugleich der Frage nach, ob das Spiel auch heute noch eine Plattform für Gleichberechtigung, Toleranz und ein authentisches Leben sein kann.

    Abstract: While progress in Africa can be seen across the board, every day-migrants are dying in the Mediterranean. The continent is in fact a powder keg. The powder is demographics. And the detonator is unemployment. What is worrying for the continent is even more dramatic for the Sahel, a huge region of about 100 million inhabitants, where insecurity is spreading and which may act as a detonator for West Africa with a population of 700 million in 25 years.0The mass unemployment of young people far more than jihadist propaganda, is the primary explanation for the dramatic collapse of Afghanistan. Despite major differences in geography and culture, there are huge similarities between the Sahel and Afghanistan, increasing insecurity, drug trafficking, and the spread of radical Islam being the most worrisome. Unfortunately the same recipes that failed in Afghanistan are again being rolled out in the Sahel. Without a radical change in the international community's behaviour, we will soon be confronted with, first, a 'Sahelistan' and then an 'Africanistan,' an African Afghanistan, but five- or ten-times worse.

    Abstract: "This is a study into how the public discourse on migrant integration in the UK changed from 2000-2010. The book shows that the discursive construction of integration in the British public sphere shifted from one of cultural pluralism to one of neo-assimilation, informed by a wider spread of neo-liberalism that necessitates self-sufficiency and discourages state assistance. Situated within the Critical Discourse Studies tradition, the book employs a Discourse Historical approach to the data and includes innovative analysis combining 'top-down' (policy documents and media texts) and 'bottom-up' (focus groups with migrants and new citizens) sites of discourse production. In doing so, it provides a broad and detailed perspective of public discourse on integration in the UK. The book shows that understandings of 'integration' are diachronically and synchronically fluid and as such, the term plays an important role as a 'consensus concept' that different actors can support whilst construing it in different ways. Analysis of the data further reveals that integration is interdiscursively linked to other social fields, such as the economy, terrorism and public spending. The book also argues that integration policy has become directed not just at new migrants, but also long-term British citizens and that this has the potential to have considerable impact on community cohesion."--Bloomsbury Publishing

    Abstract: Behind the colorful images of the annual Gay Pride Parade in Tel Aviv is a dimension of legal equality or gay people. Israel is not only an island of LGBT freedom in the Middle East, but also one of the most progressive countries in the world on the issue — Israel allows and enables alternative parenting and family models that are still largely unheard-of in Germany today. However, the topic of LGBT rights also reveals the profound chasm in Israeli society between the Tel Aviv "bubble" and the rest of the country, between ultraprogressive and ultra-conservative thought patterns and ways of life.
    Abstract: Hinter den bunten Bildern der jährlichen Gay Pride Parade in Tel Aviv steht eine Dimension der rechtlichen Gleichstellung von Homosexuellen, mit der Israel nicht nur eine Inselposition im Nahen Osten einnimmt, sondern die zu den progressivsten weltweit gehört. Sie ermöglicht alternative Eltern- und Familienmodelle, die in Deutschland bisher weitgehend unbekannt sind. Gleichzeitig offenbart sich an diesem Thema die tiefgreifende Spaltung der israelischen Gesellschaft zwischen der "Bubble" Tel Aviv und dem Rest des Landes sowie zwischen ultra-progressiven und ultra-konservativen Lebensformen und Denkmustern.

    Abstract: In recent years, anthropologists, historians, and others have been drawn to study the profuse and creative usages of digital media by religious movements. At the same time, scholars of Christian Africa have long been concerned with the history of textual culture, the politics of Bible translation, and the status of the vernacular in Christianity. Students of Islam in Africa have similarly examined politics of knowledge, the transmission of learning in written form, and the influence of new media. Until now, however, these arenas--Christianity and Islam, digital media and "old" media--have been studied separately. Religion, Media, and Marginality in Modern Africa is one of the first volumes to put new media and old media into significant conversation with one another, and also offers a rare comparison between Christianity and Islam in Africa. The contributors find many previously unacknowledged correspondences among different media and between the two faiths. In the process they challenge the technological determinism--the notion that certain types of media generate particular forms of religious expression--that haunts many studies. In evaluating how media usage and religious commitment intersect in the social, cultural, and political landscapes of modern Africa, this collection will contribute to the development of new paradigms for media and religious studies.--Publisher's summary
