Abstract: Until the latter part of the twentieth century, Italy's colonial past was a largely neglected topic in historical studies. Before then, only a handful of historians had shown any inclination for rescuing it from the dusty shelves of history, to which it had been relegated. With a few exceptions - most notably Angelo Del Boca - not many had the courage to venture into such treacherous territory.Colonial studies experienced a resurgence at the start of the new millennium, with remarkable progress in the quantity and quality of research, along with the wider public's newfound interest, as evidenced by an important conference held in Milan in 2006 and the large audience it attracted. This book addresses the relationship between national identity and colonial culture in Italy. The centrality of the construction of Otherness in the identity formation of the colonizer has been extensively reported, both in Europe and elsewhere, and the relevance of colonial heritage has also been attested. In Italy, however, this relationship has been neglected in existing historiography, and the colonial experience has traditionally been side-lined and marginalized. This volume is divided into several sections, each organized around an underlying theme. Within each theme, a broad array of topics and methodologies reflect the authors' approach in analysing the role of colonialism in the process of Italian identity formation. The rather heterogeneous works contained in this book, which attest the vitality and complexity of the debate on Italian colonialism, are clustered around one central theme: the reconstruction of un-comfortable memories, and a past that will not pass - which overlap the challenging present circumstances of rigidity, racism and rejection. As such, this book is a work of critical reflection, assembled using varied resources and scientific tools in order

Abstract: The increasing potency of identity politics across Europe often sees sport acting as a vehicle for the promotion and celebration of regional and sub-national identities. However, while the relationship between sport, the media and national identity has featured in numerous academic and political debates in recent years, the links between sports media and regional identity have received little attention. This seems a curious oversight, because the links between sport and region frequently become a celebration of the local and the distinctive, emblematic of community and continuity. This volume will explore that sense of the counter-hegemonic, where sport is celebrated by a media often keen to promote notions of difference, which might verge on rebellion in some contexts, conceived as resisting global homogeneity or national hegemony. At other times, they may merely reflect a commercial nose for the local audience's tastes, but there is always the sense of preserving something important, a celebration of the diversity that makes us human. This book considers the centrality and cultural significance of particular sports, or clubs, to regional and sub-national identities across Europe and beyond, adopting a comparative approach to the mediatized nature of such portrayals

Abstract: Italian immigrants began to settle in Wales at the turn of the 19th century, opening hundreds of coffee shops, particularly in the South Wales Valleys. Despite this, such immigrants remain a largely unexplored case study in the history of Italian immigration to the UK. This book uses a variety of unexplored sources, and engages with the broader academic debate on migration, identity, and the trans-generational transmission of memory, to describe the emergence of Welsh-Italian narratives and the formation of a distinctive, yet complex, Welsh-Italian identity. It follows a chronological journey, moving from the interwar period, a time in which Italians in Wales were generally regarded as fully established and integrated, through to the Second World War, a time when Italian identity became problematic and resulted in nearly seventy years of 'silencing', up until the first decade of the 21st century, where a mixture of commemorative events and cultural initiatives prompted the emergence of Welsh-Italian narratives. The book begins by studying photographic representations of Italians in Wales during the interwar period, using photographs available in local history books, private collections and history books. The analysis of the photographic material draws from the work of scholars such as Sontag, Noble, Hirsh and Bate on photo-textual analysis, to show how photographs can reveal understudied, yet important, aspects of Italian migrant identity and of the relationship with the host community in the period that preceded the Second World War. The book then examines how the events of the Second World War destabilised the images of family, sociability and integration suggested by these photographs, and how such events aggravated tensions between host and migrant cultures. It continues by investigating recent Welsh-Italian texts where, in revisiting the
Abstract: past and the experience of their ancestors, the authors bring different circumstances and personal factors into play determining the degree to which they reconcile their dual identity. It concludes with a comparison between these 'narratives of belonging' and the representation of the Italian migrant experience in Anglo-Welsh literature

Abstract: Whether one thinks of the modern world or of more remote times, both seem to have been affected - if not moulded - by the interaction between the concepts of authority and displacement. Indeed, political and social sources of authority have often been the causes of major geographical displacements, as can be illustrated by the numerous waves of migration which have been observed in the past and which are still present today, such as the transportation of slaves from African to American coasts in colonial times. If displacement can often be understood as spatial displacement, it can also be synonymous with psychological, social, and even aesthetic displacement, for instance through different artistic means or through the use of stylistic discursive devices. Displacement also entails dis-placement, dis-location, as well as dislocation, or chaos. This suggests that the etymological meaning of the term authority, auctoritas, has to be highlighted, thus referring to the author of a particular work and to the different manifestations of the authorial persona in a work of art. This collection of essays in two volumes examines the relationships between the concepts of authority and displacement in the English-speaking world, without restricting the analysis to a particular area, or to the field of literature. Some essays do, indeed, deal with literature, from different spatial areas and temporal eras, while others look into these concepts from a more cultural or aesthetic point of view.Volume One, Exploring Europe/from Europe, includes essays on Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, John Ross's Second Exploration Voyage, Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure, in addition to investigations of Rose Tremain's novels, Disguise by Hugo Hamilton, and the cinematic adaptation of Conrad's Almayer's Folly by Chantal Akerman. The volume concludes with a study of two novels

Abstract: Both anthropologists and conservation scientists are fascinated by Oceanic barkcloth, or tapa, as it is known by its generic Polynesian term. Historic tapa designs are often living cultural heritage, but today's objects also combine content, form and tradition in new ways and are intimately connected with the social and cultural identity of individuals, groups, and even nations. With tapa being completely alien to European traditions, conservation scientists are challenged by the material and its restoration and preservation. Questions of adequate presentation in exhibitions touch upon both disciplines, particularly when cultural requirements of the source communities come into play. This volume brings together presentations given at an interdisciplinary symposium on the social and cultural meanings, conservation and presentation of Oceanic tapa, organised and hosted by the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum of World Cultures and the Institute of Conservation Sciences, Cologne, in 2014. By presenting new, international, cutting-edge research from both disciplines, Made in Oceania offers unique insights into current museum practice, and connects historical research with recent social and cultural developments in the Pacific

Abstract: In the next twenty years, the convergence of robotics, informatics, nano-bio-technologies, genetics, information technologies, and cognitive sciences will have a significant impact on society. This convergence will lead to a revolution in the way that science, health, energy, resources, production, consumption and environment are conceptualised. However, these technologies will also pose new and specific challenges in terms of sustainability, ethics, and even expectations of the future. Indeed, today, the word "future" is often associated with pessimism and fear, much more than it was in the past. In order to face all these technological, ethical and cultural challenges, governments, industries and societies will need a robust cognitive framework, in order to grasp the complex dimensions of the technological convergence in progress, and must rapidly develop effective strategies to face the situations that will, unavoidably, take place. This book provides, through systemic and complexity theories, some of the theoretical tools necessary to tackle the opportunities and risks of the future

Abstract: Proverbs have been described as "the wisdom of many and the wit of one". Apart from being pleasurable to read, these gems of folklore contain keen observations of everyday life and provide an insight into human behaviour and character. Proverbs constitute a particular culture's popular philosophy of life. One can tell a people's character from that people's proverbs. As Francis Bacon said, "The genius, wit, and spirit of a nation are discovered in its proverbs".This collection contains over one thousand Greek and over one thousand English proverbs accompanied by their translations. The bilingual introduction relates the history, the origin, and the importance of proverbs. The book also includes a short chapter on the use of proverbs in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Modern Greek literature

Abstract: This is a book about economics and racism: During World War I, the liberal global economic system, based on principles of free trade and most-favored nation treatment and negotiated in gold parities, collapsed for good. The disintegration and collapse of commerce eventually led to racist cleansing, expulsion and mass murder. Against this background, this book offers new perspectives on the racist fault-lines that appeared and deepened in European economies after the end of what was regarded as the Great War.At what point did people start to ostracize their neighbors economically because they thought they were of a different ethnic group? Who decided who was to be excluded? Where did the fault-lines open? Where did the boundaries lie? How were they defined - by law, or by common practice? How much extra time and money were people prepared to spend in order to do ostracize their neighbors? And what did that mean for the economy - and society - as such?

Abstract: The influence of Greece has had a strong effect on Britain's cultural heritage and vice versa. This book encompasses fifteen topics relating to the more significant cultural contacts between the two countries. All these fifteen chapters are the result of research in various archives, both in Britain and in Greece, and demonstrate some sporadic periods of the reciprocal cultural, as opposed to political, relations of the two countries.Starting with Pytheas, who was the first to circumnavigate Britain in the time of Alexander the Great and who gave a detailed report of what he saw there, followed by an account of the life and works of the Greek monk Theodore of Tarsus, later 6th Archbishop of Canterbury, who organized the Church of England, the book includes a chapter on Shakespeare's classical knowledge and his "small Latine and lesse Greeke". There is also a chapter on Milton's interest, when he was Cromwell's Latin Secretary, in liberating Greece from Ottoman rule, and a study of an ode the young Coleridge wrote in Greek. The two great philhellenes Shelley and Byron also figure here in connection with Greece and in the light of written documents, particularly in Byron's case. The book presents also a lesser-known poem on Rigas' death written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and concludes with two articles on Clement Harris, who volunteered and died for Greece in 1897 and on Lawrence Durrell, who loved Greece and lived on three Greek Islands, Corfu, Rhodes and Cyprus.Given its variety of subject matter and its detailed discussions, this book offers an insightful contribution to a further and better understanding between the people of these two countries

Abstract: Engendering Ireland is a collection of ten essays showcasing the importance of gender in a variety of disciplines. These essays interrogate gender as a concept which encompasses both masculinity and femininity, and which permeates history and literature, culture and society in the modern period. The collection includes historical research which situates Irish women workers within an international economic context; textual analysis which sheds light on the effects of modernity on the home and rising female expectations in the post-war era; the rediscovery of significant Irish women modernists such as Mary Devenport O'Neill; and changing representations of masculinity, race, ethnicity and interculturalism in modern Irish theatre. Each of these ten essays provides a thought-provoking picture of the complex and hitherto unrecognised roles gender has played in Ireland over the last century. While each of these chapters offers a fresh perspective on familiar themes in Irish gender studies, they also illustrate the importance and relevance of gender studies to contemporary debates in Irish society

    Keywords: French language--Political aspects--Gabon ; Electronic books
Abstract: Following independence from their respective colonial regimes, seventeen African countries adopted French as their national language. This political move has had a number of consequences, both positive and negative, leading to the central question of this book: was the adoption of French as their national language a blessing or a curse for these countries? Is Francophonie a symbol of unity, a means of networking for French speakers in a globalised world, offering a sense of belonging through linguistic and cross-cultural, shared values, or is it a form of cultural imperialism in disguise? The rationale for adopting French was prompted by the perception that linguistic diversity in French Africa was a source of instability, while French could act as a stabilising agent. The adoption of this language has, however, widened the gaps between ethnic and tribal groups, reinforcing inequalities between classes, particularly the elite and the rural population. It has also strengthened the view that African languages are not fit for the business world and are unable to compete with dominant languages, thus perpetuating the colonial myth. Language is inseparable from culture, and both language and culture constitute a nation's heritage. As such, African heritage is being eroded by the day. This book offers detailed insights into the impact of French in Gabon, exploring what the French language has brought to the country, but also considering what it is taking away

Abstract: This book represents a significant contribution to the discussion on the part played by communication, especially in its mediated forms, in people's lives, dwelling on the nature of the relationship between the notion of power and the media in current Western societies. The media have dramatically increased their capacity to exercise their symbolic force over other fields of cultural production, by partly structuring those intrinsic rules, values, and practices that organize, for example, the political system or the academic world from the inside. On the other hand, the media are intertwined environments subjected to the influence of other cultural, economic, and political forces, which, in turn, reveal themselves to be capable of framing reality through the media themselves. Particularly focusing on the topic of the economic crisis, the various chapters of this edited volume highlight how the relationship between the media and other forces capable of pervasively exercising their power appears to be, paradoxically, as strict as it is opaque. Social media and smart mobile technologies have increasingly affected the modalities whereby other institutions and organizations reflect on themselves and develop their worldviews. At the same time, however, politics and economics experts and strategists have all learned how to 'exploit' this potential for their own purposes. Detecting the opacity that characterizes this form of 'exploitation' is the first step in the acknowledgment of this phenomenon

Abstract: Hegemony and Language Policies in Southern Africa argues that language policy - whether formal or informal, micro or macro - has always been the centrepiece of identity imaginings, struggles for political emancipation, and quests for cultural affirmation and economic advancement in the colonial and postcolonial histories of African nations. This book addresses questions on the social and political history of language policies, focusing on their significance for ethnic, immigrant and social groups, as well as for various political projects in southern Africa, as they have unfolded from the late nineteenth century to the present. What do the social and political histories of language policies suggest about current identity narratives in southern Africa? Under what circumstances are language policies deployed in the framing of social and political identities? Whose interests do language policies serve, and whose interests do they undermine in southern Africa? Is it not possible to theorise language policy using lenses other than those from the Global North? Why do scholars, governments, and social policy makers from the Global South always choose to adopt language policy frameworks originating from the Global North? In responding to these crucial questions, this book challenges the hegemony of modernist ideologies of language and introduces notions of ignored lingualism and multilingual habitus in order to look differently at linkages between language policies and political, economic, cultural and developmental issues. Such a focus resonates with contemporary views about language as a multimodal and multilingual practice among speakers. Both academic and non-academic communities will find the book of great interest, as it is written in a style that is both scholarly and reader-friendly

Abstract: There is undoubtedly considerable intellectual and methodological progress evident in approaches to linguistics, from systemic and formal methods, to post-Newtonian transpersonal, non-local models of meaning co-creation built within contemporary language studies. Indeed, such changes are constant - the 20th century product orientation of linguistic research is currently being complemented by ecolinguistic processes, with the linearity of scientific perception and treatment being replaced by the dynamic and multispectral approach of "ecological" theory. This book provides a richly detailed analysis of this profound shift within contemporary language and communication research. A particularly interesting facet of this volume is the proposal that the architecture of the human organism is, transpersonally, in constant relation with its immediate surroundings, as well as with non-local multilevel surroundings. This connection is based not only on the cognitive connection of minds or neurocognitive contacts with the nervous and sensual systems of communicators, but on the multidimensional relationship between the manifold communicative modalities living systems possess. Human communication is embedded within a given local communicative situation, as well within the global, non-local environment via the basic ontology of entanglement. The human communicative process is always evolving as a result of the constant fluctuations of life processes. Indeed, the conclusions presented in this volume open up a new approach to present-day linguistics, that human language is an essential life process

Abstract: Multi-faced Social Transformations: Challenges and Studies brings together the proceedings of the 7th Slovenian Social Science Conference, "The Challenges of Social Transformations", held in September 2014. It was organized by the School of Advanced Social Studies (SASS), the Slovenian National Committee of the Management of Social Transformations programme (MOST), and the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO. The multidisciplinary contributions presented here analyse various aspects of the economic, social, and cultural transformations that accompany the contemporary globalized world. The book consists of four sections dealing with particular areas of transformations. These include a range of political, economic and cultural dimensions that are observed from the macro-level, in social systems and structural changes, to the micro-level, in aspects of individuals' lives. The book will be of interest for academics in the field of social sciences, as well as for civil society activists and policy makers. The frames of the transformations are not limited to the European space, and provide a more global perspective

Abstract: This book brings together articles based on papers given at the "Scandinavia and the Balkans: Cultural Interactions with Byzantium and Eastern Europe in the First Millennium" conference, held on 25 and 26 September 2012 at the New Bulgarian University, Sofia. The conference was designed to pave the way for studies on the connections between the Balkans and Scandinavia to develop within a broader context, to promote the successes of the researchers who have dedicated their efforts to this scholarly field, and to articulate the importance of this topic to scholarly investigations, education and society. The topic of this book is one that has rarely been discussed in academic studies, while it is almost unknown in social and cultural contexts. While it may seem to deal with a rather narrow historical frame, remote from today's reality - the relationship between two distant geographical and cultural areas in the past - in fact, the focus, or rather multiple foci on this topic offered here explore a number of aspects of the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages in the Balkans and Scandinavia

Abstract: The suffragettes are dead. Long live the suffragettes! As part of the Wonder Woman Radical Manchester events celebrating International Women's Day, the one-day conference Suffragette Legacy brought together academics, artists, campaigners and activists to present and speak about how their work is affected by the suffragette legacy of feminism in 2014. The organisers welcomed academic papers, feminist theory, poetry and visual art to discuss this important, but often complex topic. It was found that the suffragette legacy is often hidden in private stories, in little-known projects, in art and in metaphor. In addition, the contributions to the conference showed that certain suffragette words, worries and worlds in gender politics still play out amongst humans. This edited volume will encourage more dialogue, discussions and future narratives for our feminist foremothers in both Manchester and beyond

Abstract: Research in Social Factors, also called Environment and Behavior Studies or Person-Environment Relations, is research into the human experience of the built environment. Even since its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s, as a response to the perceived failures of Modernism, Social Factors continues to ask questions about how people use space, and what meaning that space holds. This edited collection brings together cutting-edge research and contemporary issues into one book. Divided into two parts, the chapters in this collection demonstrate the continuing relevance of, and the wide array of topics in, the field. The first section, History and Future Outlook, addresses the field itself, investigating its history and common terms and updating seminal work. The second section, Perspectives on the User, surveys contemporary research into the human side of design, understanding the built environment through the lens of valuing "the user", a term which encompasses everyone from Native Americans to children to adults with disabilities to entire cities devastated by tornadoes. Contributors to this volume include emerging and established scholars, as well as practitioners, and touch on issues of sustainability, history, culture, new media, disaster recovery, health, and recreation. This book will particularly appeal to scholars looking to keep abreast of current issues, students of the field endeavouring to understand their chosen subject, and practitioners exploring new strategies in understanding the clients they serve. The array of topics and perspectives examined here demonstrates a renaissance of Social Factors

Abstract: Animals, Deviance, and Sex proposes that "deviance" is a fluid term that advances cultural, gender, human, and societal norms, but "deviant" labels that presume unequivocally to segregate superior human morality from animal sexuality may fail to see the forest for the trees. A plain reading of the word "deviance" may suggest scientific or quantitative classifications. Indeed, animal species may be grouped and analyzed according to generalized norms for each species. However, "deviance" may indicate moral relativism, which is fundamentally tied to historical and contemporary understandings of human sexuality and human-animal relationships. Animals, Deviance, and Sex argues that traditional and progressive classifications, analyses, and implications of human deviance could authentically be reworked in consideration of animals' anatomy, breeding, copulation, gender, mating, nonconsent, and sexuality. Morally and ethically gray areas voluntarily and knowingly traversed by human-animal sexual linkages have expanded and become increasingly normalized by popular culture. Animals, Deviance, and Sex's treatment of these trends is amusingly complex, yet unpretentious, truthfully proficient, and careful. Each chapter assiduously and succinctly tethers animal science, anecdotes, behavior and social science, current events, human-animal relationships, law, and theory throughout dozens of exotically-themed subchapters. Animals, Deviance, and Sex is a well-organized oeuvre demonstrating professional expertise and experience

Abstract: This book begins from the assumption that we have entered an era where the concept of political representation is seriously compromised. Eschewing the flawed promise of acting for the 'common good', or in accordance with the 'general will' of an homogenous body politic, it delves into the process of individuation, the diverse reality of individuals and communities alike in order to elucidate contemporary experience as relational phenomena of networked human and non-human actors.Clearly this task is ambitious, for it must bridge the gap between the needs, aspirations, emotions, and anxieties of individuals on the one hand, and the desired emergence of collective co-operation on the other. Now that we have entered an age where the irresistible rise of global mega cities and big data appear to determine the outlook for generations to come, it is more pertinent than ever to challenge the technological promise of a future where numbers speak for themselves. The full-blown heterogeneity of the multitude thrives on the general intellect and the activity of the speaker. To act is to start anew and to intervene in the circulation of empty signifiers upon which we are called to assign the name of an event. Emancipating the Many therefore is a book about difference marked as intervention, an emergent 'constitution of time'

Abstract: Occupy Wall Street, as centered in New York City, received much publicity. Little attention, however, has been granted to the hundreds of Occupy groups in marginal locations whose creative politics were certainly not limited by the influential example of Occupy in Zuccotti Park. This volume rectifies this oversight, with thirteen essays critically addressing the politics of occupation in places such as Indiana, Oregon, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Montana, and California. It initiates an interdisciplinary and critical discussion concerned with the importance of the 'local' to contemporary politics; the evolution of Occupy Wall Street tactics as they changed to fit differing, non-spectacular contexts; and what worked or did not work politically in various contexts. All of the above is designed to inform and improve that as-of-yet-unnamed movement which will come after Occupy. Boasting scholars from sociology, English, anthropology, peace studies, and history, the volume is divided into three major sections: Occupying the Local: Promise and Predicament; Occupying Space and Borders: South, East, and West; and Occupying the Media: Local, Regional, and National Dilemmas

Abstract: Sound and taste conjugate a special relationship, and they are often presented and represented together. The linkage between music and food has been a traditional field for artists to suggest, among various emotions, love and sexual desire, happiness, fear, and rebellion, as well as environmental, urban, ethnic, and class values. This multi-author book explores the interconnectedness of music and food and their meaningful relations. With a multicultural approach, chapters focus on various historical periods and world cultures. Abstract: In an era of the radicalization of political ideologies in Europe, long-lasting societal remnants of the economic breakdown, and the neoliberalist consolidation of capitalist values, it is ethically relevant to critically reconceptualise the meaning and role of European feminisms and the challenges they have to confront today, both locally and transnationally. In the face of ubiquitous beliefs about feminism having exhausted itself, such a rethinking of the place and priorities of feminist politics within and outside academia is urgently needed. The popularization of the so-called faux-feminisms, assuming attained emancipation in the present-day neoliberal environment of advanced capitalism, calls for close examination and creative counter-strategies. Bearing in mind that the patterns of oppression still prevail, becoming even more and more insidious and complex, it is all the more necessary to identify, scrutinize, and contest the vicissitudes of the dominant apparatus of control and subjugation, and to demystify the purportedly gender-inclusive operations of the regime. As such, the book seeks to renew an academic and political interest in the epistemological tradition of context-created knowledge. Bringing together authors from diverse geopolitical locations, this volume constitutes a forum for fruitful encounters across generations and national and cultural differences, contributing to a better understanding of the complexities of patriarchal ideologies and to the creation of a more sustainable communal future. The book offers a collection of chapters introducing situated perspectives which adopt intersectional optics in order to analyze the transformations of the contemporary socio-political realm and reflect research priorities within present-day feminist scholarship

Abstract: "Why do some TV genres have the label feminine or masculine? Why do we worry about boys playing video games too much while girls play just as often? Is the TV show Sex and the City empowering or not? Why are recent television shows like Desperate Housewives post-feminist television? Gender and Media explores these and other complex questions by offering a critical overview of the contemporary debates and discussions surrounding gender and mediated communication, and by providing student's with an overview of the current academic research on these topics. The book is divided into three parts: representing, producing, and consuming with each section made up of three chapters. The first chapter of each section attempts to answer the most basic questions: 'Who is represented?', 'Who produces what?' and 'Who consumes what?'. The second chapter of each section draws attention to the complexity of the relationship between gender and media, concentrating on the "why." The third and final chapter of each section addresses the latest debates in the fields of media and gender, adding a vital layer of understanding of the topic at hand. This process is aided by text boxes, which provide some additional information on the most important concepts and topics and exercises, which help bridge the gap between theory and everyday life media practices. This will be an ideal textbook for students studying gender and media, and for general courses on gender studies, sociology, cultural studies and women's studies"--

Abstract: Non-representational theory is one of the contemporary moment's most influential theoretical perspectives within social and cultural theory. It is now widely considered to be the logical successor of postmodern theory, the logical development of post-structuralist thought, and the most notable intellectual force behind the turn across the social and cultural sciences away from cognition, meaning, and textuality. And yet, it is often poorly understood. This is in part because of its complexity, but also because of its limited treatment in the few volumes chiefly dedicated to it. Theories must be useful to researchers keen on utilizing concepts and analytical frames for their personal interpretive purposes. How useful non-representational theory is, in this sense, is yet to be understood. This book outlines a variety of ways in which non-representational ideas can influence the research process, the very value of empirical research, the nature of data, the political value of data and evidence, the methods of research, the very notion of method, and the styles, genres, and media of research.

Abstract: Female beauty systems everywhere are complex, integrating markers of class, status, power, and sexuality to perform the fundamental function of sorting individuals into categories of "more" or "less" desirable. Heirs to the tradition of courtly love, modern western female beauty systems tend to share the norm of man as pursuer, woman as pursued, having developed around the trope of the madly-desiring poet or knight supplicating his aloof and lovely lady for her favor. The apparent longevity of the courtly love tradition raises the question of whether the way in which it structures male desire in reaction to female beauty is part of a "universal" tendency, an evolutionary adaptation, despite clear evidence that female beauty systems are also, in fact, socially constructed, and reflect enormous ambivalence about the power and performance of beauty. Although modern western female beauty systems are routinely demystified and contested today, the purveyors of culture that support them-institutional, intellectual, artistic, commercial, and popular-continue as they always have to construe women as objects of male desire. Still, within this basic structure, the systems have varied greatly across time and space, with women using beauty as a form of social capital in widely differing ways. Moreover, as individuals have begun to experience their bodies as malleable and endlessly transformable, rather than unruly and unyielding, many have begun to experience beauty less as a given and more as a project. The nine essays collected here examine a number of different Western female beauty systems over the centuries, considering how women have complied with, contributed to, profited or suffered from, and resisted them

Keywords: Technological innovations--Forecasting ; Technological innovations ; Forecasting ; Electronic books
Abstract: Technology constantly evolves, usually slowly and insidiously - but always just as surely. Things that are currently being developed in laboratories will be in the public domain as different products and applications perhaps as soon as in a few years' time, and as more refined versions in around ten years' time. This book deals with the future of technology, and explores the influence new technologies may have on life within the next twenty years. It is divided into three parts, the first of which discusses technological development and the forces and counter-forces related to it. This section also reviews how advances in technology are forecasted, and what kinds of parties make these predictions, and provides examples of forecasts for the next couple of decades. The second part of the book investigates the various areas of technology and their related trends. This section discusses current technological studies which may have concrete impacts in everyday life in a few decades, such as those in the fields of energy, transportation, biotechnology, materials, ICT, robotics, medical technology and space technology. The third part of the book introduces the authors' visions of how technology may develop by 2035, and presents three different scenarios, or future worlds. These will demonstrate the possible directions in which technological development can take us. The scenarios are introduced through two main characters, Romeo and Juliet (adapted from Shakespeare's play) in the year 2035. Even though technology is constantly changing, the writers believe that, even years into the future, the significance of human relations will remain the greatest influence on human life

Abstract: "How do we interact with people in our everyday life? Who are the people we are connected to? What are the consequences of overlapping social circles and how people deal with the potential emerging conflicts? What are the structural and cultural mechanisms that regulate social worlds? Network science is a scientific approach to the study of network dependencies and associations which tries to answer these and many other questions. This book explores the underlying mechanisms that regulate social life as they are produced, reproduced, modified, and abandoned in the spatial and temporal patterns of interactions. The mixed methods approach, that combines formal network analysis with qualitative materials and statistical tools, shows the importance of contextualising structural mechanisms in their social and cultural environment, and allows overcoming the traditional methodological boundaries that shape the field of social sciences"--

Abstract: In this compelling book the author contends that social equity--specifically racial equity--is a nervous area of government. Over the course of history, this nervousness has stifled many individuals and organizations, thus leading to an inability to seriously advance the reduction of racial inequities in government. The author asserts that until this nervousness is effectively managed, public administration social equity efforts designed to reduce racial inequities cannot realize their full potential

While focused on the impact of television, feature film, and popular music, the authors reach far beyond media to explore how our understanding, values, and beliefs about race, class, gender and sexual orientation are constructed. They analyze how personal histories, combined with the collective history of oppression and liberation, contribute to stereotypes and misinformation, as well as how personal engagement with media can impact prospects

Keywords: Social interaction ; Electronic books
Abstract: This book originates from a basic, yet innovative question: in which forms of qualification and justification do social actors support themselves to engage in common actions? This inquiry brings to the field of sociological and anthropological analysis the need to take into account socially accepted forms of qualifications of common action and the ways by which they are brought to social situations, and, simultaneously, the need to understand the processes of elaboration of justifications which may demonstrate to social actors that acting in common is worthwhile. As such, this volume analyses the processes by which social actors qualify and communalize certain aspects of their life and also produce justifications that give sense to the ways and means of actions thus brought to the stage of social life. The book will appeal to the wider academic public, namely scholars and post-graduate students, in the areas of sociology and anthropology, and, furthermore, to all professionals in the field of social sciences, throughout the world. In addition, given its treatment of these domains, the volume will also be of interest to professionals in areas such as health, education, and urban planning

Abstract: "The History of Migration in Europe belies several myths by arguing, for example, that immobility has not been the "normal" condition of people before the modern era. Migration (far from being an income-maximizing choice taken by lone individuals) is often a household strategy, and local wages benefit from migration. This book shows how ssuccesses arise when governments liberalize and accompany the international movements of people with appropriate legislation, while failures take place when the legislation enacted is insufficient, belated or ill shaped. The first part of this book addresses mainly methodological issues. Past and present migration is basically defined as a cross-cultural movement; cultural boundaries need prolonged residence and active integrationist policies to allow cross-fertilization of cultures among migrants and non-migrants. The second section collects chapters that examine the role of public bodies with reference to migratory movements, depicting a series of successes and failures in the migration policies through examples drawn from the European Union or single countries. The third section deals with challenges immigrants face once they have settled in their new countries: Do immigrants seek "integration" in their host culture? Through which channels is such integration achieved, and what roles are played by citizenship and political participation? What is the "identity" of migrants and their children born in the host countries? This text's originality stems from the fact that it explains the complex nature of migratory movements by incorporating a variety of perspectives and using a multi-disciplinary approach, including economic, political and sociological contributions"--

Abstract: "This volume highlights the ways in which the prospect of peace can generate anxieties and consequently set in motion social and political processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts. In analysing this issue, the volume builds on the notion of ontological security and its recent applications to international relations theory. Although conflicts threaten the physical security of the parties involved, they also help settle existential questions about basic parameters of life, being, and identity, and thus over time become sources of ontological security. The prospect of peace, through the resolution or transformation of conflict, threatens to unsettle the stability and consistency of self-narratives, and their associated routines and habits at the individual, group, and state levels. The contributors argue two key points: 1) that ontological insecurity may set in motion political and social processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts; 2) that coping with peace anxieties necessitates the formulation of alternative self-narratives at the individual, societal, and state levels that re-situate the Self in relation to Other and to the world at large. Consequently, the book analyses the ways in which, and the conditions under which, conflict resolution induces ontological insecurity, and the different ways in which ontological insecurity has prevented the successful culmination of peace processes in different conflict contexts, including Cyprus, Israel-Palestine and Northern Ireland. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, social theory and IR in general"..

Abstract: "The Routledge Handbook of Political Ecology presents a comprehensive and authoritative examination of the rapidly growing field of political ecology. Located at the intersection of geography, anthropology, sociology, and environmental history, political ecology is one of the most vibrant and conceptually diverse fields of inquiry into nature-society relations within the social sciences. The Handbook serves as an essential guide to this rapidly evolving intellectual landscape. With contributions from over 50 leading authors, the Handbook presents a systematic overview of political ecology's origins, practices and core concerns, and aims to advance both ongoing and emerging debates. While there are numerous edited volumes, textbooks, and monographs under the heading 'political ecology,' these have tended to be relatively narrow in scope, either as collections of empirically based (mostly case study) research on a given theme, or broad overviews of the field aimed at undergraduate audiences. The Routledge Handbook of Political Ecology is the first systematic, comprehensive overview of the field. With authors from North and South America, Europe, Australia and elsewhere, the Handbook of Political Ecology provides a state of the art examination of political ecology; addresses ongoing and emerging debates in this rapidly evolving field; and charts new agendas for research, policy, and activism. The Routledge Handbook of Political Ecology introduces political ecology as an interdisciplinary academic field. By presenting a 'state of the art' examination of the field, it will serve as an invaluable resource for students and scholars. It not only critically reviews the key debates in the field, but develops them"--

Abstract: Pagan and Native Faith movements have sprung up across Europe in recent decades, yet little has been published about them compared with their British and American counterparts. Though all such movements valorize human relationships with nature and embrace polytheistic cosmologies, practitioners' beliefs, practices, goals, and agendas are diverse. Often side by side are groups trying to reconstruct ancient religions motivated by ethnonationalism-especially in post-Soviet societies-and others attracted by imported traditions, such as Wicca, Druidry, Goddess Spirituality, and Core Shamanism. Drawing on ethnographic cases, contributors explore the interplay of neo-nationalistic and neo-colonialist impulses in contemporary Paganism, showing how these impulses play out, intersect, collide, and transform.

Keywords: Communication--Technological innovations ; Electronic books
Abstract: In the spirit of Alvin Toffler's acclaimed works peering into the future of the technological society, Communication Shock is a concise history of communication technologies and an exploration of the possible social and human impacts of nanotechnology on the ecology of human communication. As we become increasingly more networked with communication technologies, we must come to understand and confront the social impact of these changes. More importantly, we must wisely choose in embracing or rejecting these technologies and exploring how we might do both by striking an appropriate balance.Grounded in communication theory and praxis, Communication Shock brings some objectivity to the discussion of technology, maps its development, and encourages a rational conversation about its potential problems and promise. It challenges readers to reach their own conclusions - about the future, imagined and unimaginable, about the fundamental values in conflict, and how one might choose to embrace or contest them to maintain individual autonomy in the face of increasingly ubiquitous marketing and technological change.Present and emerging communications technologies hold the promise for a bold new future, but they also have their inherent risks and drawbacks. Communication shock is the human response, conscious or unconscious, wherein the individual chooses to resist the growing pervasiveness of technology in his or her life by seeking ways to reduce or redirect new technologies or to reject the addition of such technologies altogether. Here is a framework for understanding the potential of the evolving technologies, determining which are essential and which are distractions from the life that one believes to be meaningful, and making informed choices for the life one wishes to live

Abstract: This anthology explores theories and pedagogical practices that seek to graduate global leaders who are culturally astute, intellectually alert, technologically creative and innovative, and ethically sound. In Part I, the contributors examine the tasks of helping students develop a voice, an identity, and a sense of mission in their writing. Part II explores the teaching of literacies in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); literacies necessary for creating competitive visionary leaders in the marketplace. Part III showcases methods of instruction that teachers draw from histories, literature, social sciences, and American cultures in particular and global cultures in general. In Part IV, the contributors offer teaching strategies not only in critical-thinking skills, but also in imaginative, creative-thinking skills to prepare visionary leaders to create solutions and products to meet the needs of the world's population and marketplaces

Abstract: This edited collection adds to the growing body of research on lifestyle migration with empirically grounded explorations focusing on a wide range of practices involved in living 'the good life'. The volume brings together a variety of socio-geographical contexts-from Swedish 'lifestyle movers' in Malta, retired Britons and Germans in Spain, and seekers of the 'rural idyll' in the Iberian Peninsula, to expats in Nepal, North Americans in Ecuador and 'utopian' lifestyle migrants in Patagonia-to provide a broad spectrum of studies that provide insights into how the practices of lifestyle migration are (re-)produced and performed. Adopting a variety of methodological approaches, the contributions also reflect the interdisciplinary nature of current research into migration, with groundings in sociology, anthropology, human geography, cultural studies and linguistics. The practice-based approach taken in this book explores a range of aspects and issues surrounding lifestyle-oriented mobilities by considering how these mobilities materialise in people's everyday engagements, imaginations, identities, institutional articulations and international dynamics. The practices that are highlighted include: mobility practices; community-building practices, particularly as enacted in the new 'cultural arenas' provided by destination places; identity practices, including racialized practices and on-line practices; language practices; home-ownership practices, practices of home-making and belonging; alternative lifestyle and 'spiritual' practices; active ageing practices; leisure and work-related practices in rural contexts; and the (often mediated) practices sustaining what can be called a 'lifestyle migration industry'.

Abstract: There is probably no national day that has such global popularity as St. Patrick's Day. On St. Patrick's Day, it is reputed that 'Everyone is Irish'. What are the factors and factions that give the day such popular appeal? Is St. Patrick's Day the same around the world - in Japan, Northern Ireland and Montserrat - as it is in the Republic of Ireland and the United States? Just how does 'Irishness' figure in the celebration and commemoration of St. Patrick's Day, and how has this day been commoditized, consumed and contested? Does St. Patrick's Day 'belong' to the people, the nation or the brewery? This edited volume brings together the best St. Patrick's Day and Irish Studies scholars from the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, Irish studies, diaspora studies, and cultural studies. The volume thematically explores how St. Patrick's Day has been consumed from the symbolic to the literal, the religious to the political. By doing so, it offers a fresh examination of its importance in contemporary society. This volume will thus appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Irish diaspora studies, and Irish historians and scholars, as well as to anthropology, sociology and cultural studies students interested in exploring St. Patrick's Day as a case study of globalization, migration and commoditization

Abstract: We work, travel, learn, seek, reflect, take part in dialogues, meet, discuss, and try to create a convivial atmosphere: this is the life story of the Arab Education Forum, and this is also how the story of this book started: from two seminars held three years apart, the idea of this book arose from an evident shortage of literature and knowledge about mobility as a tool for learning, dialogue, and artistic exchange and as a new-old paradigm around the Mediterranean basin. But what kind of knowledge, ideas and visions, do mobility practices generate? How does mobility, and its restrictions, produce and contrast the transformation and alteration of geographies, borders, territories, cities and conflict areas? How do mobility practices contribute to creating new narratives, cultural representations and counter-representations? How could cultural mobility contribute to a responsible and sustainable transformation of society? What are the impacts of mobility? What can be learned through the analysis of the relationship between mobility, art, education, intercultural dialogue, human rights and volunteerism? The present volume covers and reflects on these several crucial issues that shape the contemporary age, and provides some new and fresh perspectives about the challenges of mobility

Abstract: Repressive regimes, regardless of their nature and geographic location, have a destructive and dehumanizing effect on people's lives. Oppression and political violence shatter victims' identities, their relationships, communities and the meaning of their world as a safe and coherent place. However, while some people suffer traumatising long term effects, others become stronger and more resilient, able to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of tragedy. Reconstructing Trauma and Meaning is an invitation to revisit, bear witness and listen to the stories of suffering and healing of survivors of apartheid repression in South Africa. This work is an exploration of the life trajectories of former victims of gross human rights violations during apartheid and their creative ways of reconstructing meaning after trauma. Their life narratives, shaped by social, political and cultural realities, are a valuable contribution to the collective memory of the nation, as an intrinsic part of the continuous process of reconciliation and transformation in South Africa

Abstract: Global Mobility of Research Scientists: The Economics of Who Goes Where and Why brings together information on how the localization and mobility of academic researchers contributes to the production of knowledge. The text answers several questions, including "what characterizes nationally and internationally mobile researchers?" and "what are the individual and social implications of increased mobility of research scientists?" Eight independent, but coordinated chapters address these and other questions, drawing on a set of newly developed databases covering 30 countries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, and China, among others. Combines theoretically sound and empirically fascinating results in one volume that has international and interdisciplinary appeal. Covers topics at the forefront of academic, business, and policy discussions Data used in the chapters available at a freely-accessible website.

Abstract: Reinventing the Latino Television Viewer examines the relationship between language ideologies and the exploitation of markets within the television industry. A proliferation of television networks owned by large media conglomerates are attempting to reach U.S. Latino viewers with English-language programming. As these dominant mainstream networks enter the Hispanic television space, they are redefining the Latino audience in ways that more closely resemble the mainstream population.

Abstract: Biohistory is a revolutionary new theory that explores the biological and behavioural underpinnings of social change, including the rise and fall of civilisations.Informed by significant research into the physiological basis of behaviour conducted by author Dr Jim Penman and a team of scientists at RMIT University and the Florey Institute in Melbourne, Australia, Biohistory examines how a complex interplay between culture and biology has shaped civilisations from the Roman Empire to the modern West.Penman proposes that historical changes are driven by changes in the prevailing temperament of populations, based on physiological mechanisms that adapt animal behaviour to changing food conditions. It details the history of human society by mapping the effects of these epigenetic changes on cultures, and on historical tipping points including wars and revolutions. It shows how laboratory studies can be used to explain broad social and economic changes, including the fortunes of entire civilizations. The author's shocking conclusion is that the West is in terminal and inevitable decline, and that its only hope may lie with the biological sciences. Drawing on the disciplines of history, biology, anthropology and economics, Biohistory is the first theory of society that can be tested with some rigour in the laboratory. It explains how environment, cultural values and childrearing patterns determine whether societies prosper or collapse, and how social change can be both predicted-and potentially modified-through biochemistry.

Abstract: A timely contribution to the national dialogue on immigration, Village of Immigrants illustrates the revitalization of small-town America by waves of immigrants no longer settling in big coastal cities. Focusing on Greenport, New York, where the author lives, the book documents the contributions the Hispanic immigrants have made to the life of the town even as it explores the dark realities that shape the immigrant experience.
