    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: What does it mean to be British? To answer this, Multiracial Britishness takes us to an underexplored site of Britishness - the former British colony of Hong Kong. Vivian Kong asks how colonial hierarchies, the racial and cultural diversity of the British Empire, and global ideologies complicate the meaning of being British. Using multi-lingual sources and oral history, Kong traces the experiences of multiracial residents in 1910-45 Hong Kong. Guiding us through Hong Kong's global networks, and the colony's co-existing exclusive and cosmopolitan social spaces, this book uncovers the long history of multiracial Britishness. Kong argues that Britishness existed in the colony in multiple, hyphenated forms - as a racial category, but also as privileges, a means of survival, and a form of cultural and national belonging. This book offers us an important reminder that multiracial inhabitants of the British Empire were just as active in the making of Britishness as the British state and white Britons.

    Abstract: "To inhabitants of the Gulf Coast region of Louisiana, food is much more than nourishment. The acts of gathering, preparing, and sharing food are ways to raise children, bond with friends, and build community. In Bayou Harvest: Subsistence Practice in Coastal Louisiana, Helen A. Regis and Shana Walton examine how coastal residents deploy self-reliance and care for each other through harvesting and sharing food. Pulling from four years of fieldwork and study, Walton and Regis explore harvesting, hunting, and foraging by Native Americans, Cajuns, and other Bayou residents. This engagement with Indigenous thinkers and their neighbors yields a multifaceted view of subsistence in Louisiana. Readers will learn about coastal residents' love for the land and water, their deep connections to place, and how they identify with their food and game heritage. The book also delves into their worries about the future, particularly storms, pollution, and land loss in the coastal region. Using a set of narratives that documents the everyday food practices of these communities, the authors conclude that subsistence is not so much a specific task like peeling shrimp or harvesting sassafras, but is fundamentally about what these activities mean to the people of the coast.     Abstract: This is the first broad-ranging, comprehensive and comparative study of the concepts of propaganda and neutrality. Bringing together world-leading and early career historians, this open access book explores case studies from the time of the First World War to the end of the Cold War in countries such as Belgium, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Switzerland, Vichy France, USA, Argentina, Turkey, Portuguese Macau, Brazil, South Africa, Laos, Yugoslavia, Egypt, India, Malta, and Sweden. The individual chapters analyse the methods and channels of propaganda utilised in neutral countries, including rumours, newspapers, cartoons, films, pamphlets and magazines as well as radio broadcasts, official reports, diplomatic movements, cultural campaigns and soft power. They look to understand how these methods and channels have been deployed and how effective they have been in changing or reinforcing opinions and outcomes. Finally the book highlights the interaction between the concepts of propaganda and neutrality. It considers whether neutrality is a form of propaganda in itself, whether it is possible to be truly neutral in any propaganda battle and how the different forms of neutrality, including projected strict neutrality, non-belligerency and non-alignment, have been utilised by neutrals and belligerents to achieve propaganda goals in the last 120 years.     Abstract: "Schwarze Deutsche, die in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren in Heimen aufwuchsen, sind in der deutschen Erinnerungskultur bislang unsichtbar. Ausgehend von dieser Leerstelle stehen in ÜberLebenswege die biografischen Erzählungen Schwarzer Deutscher im Mittelpunkt, die in den Jahren 1946 und 1949 geboren wurden und in bundesdeutschen Fürsorgeeinrichtungen aufgewachsen sind. Als nichteheliche Nachkommen weisser deutscher Zivilistinnen und Schwarzer US-amerikanischer Besatzungssoldaten erlebten sie im postnationalsozialistischen Deutschland innerhalb und ausserhalb von Heimen soziale Stigmatisierung und Rassismus. Vor diesem Hintergrund mussten die Frauen und Männer von frühester Kindheit an Überlebensstrategien entwickeln, um im Heim und in der Gesellschaft bestehen zu können. Das Buch verfolgt einen intersektionalen Ansatz, bei dem die Kategorien race, Klasse und Geschlecht und ihre Verwobenheit sowie eine postkoloniale Perspektive berücksichtigt werden.     Abstract: Old Age and American Slavery explores how antebellum southerners, Black and white, adapted to, resisted, or failed to overcome changes associated with old age, both real and imagined. Slavery was a system of economic exploitation and a contested site of personal domination, both of which were affected by concerns with age. In examining how individuals, families, and communities felt about the aging process and dealt with elders, David Stefan Doddington emphasizes the complex social relations that developed in a slave society. In connecting old age to the arguments of Black activists, abolitionists, enslavers, and their propagandists, the book reveals how representations of old age, and experiences of aging, spoke to wider struggles relating to mastery, paternalism, resistance, and survival in slavery. The book asks us to rethink long-standing narratives relating to networks of solidarity in the American South and it illuminates the violent and exploitative nature of American slavery.

    Abstract: "In the United States, four distinct anti-slavery approaches emerged over the years. The four approaches identified are religious, abolitionist, human rights, and feminist. This book examines them chronologically and then in the context of modern-day slavery and trafficking. It is not our purpose to conduct a comparative analysis to emerge with the "best" approach of these four. In fact, each of these traditions is unique and plays an important role in the anti-slavery work. More important for our purposes, is to illustrate how they played off one another, strengthened one another, borrowed language and rhetoric from one another, often building on prior work while at the same time, pointing out, as the feminists do in past and present analysis, the way even anti-slavery activists leave women out of the equation"--

    Abstract: In 1864, the German jurist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs coined the term "urning" as a word for same-sex attracted men. Over the next few years, first anonymously and then publicly, he campaigned against the public persecution of these men. In response, some of his readers took on the urning terminology for themselves and engaged with Ulrichs to negotiate the finer points of their new identities. In Urning, Douglas Pretsell writes of same-sex attracted men in German-speaking Europe who used the neologism "urning" as a personal identity in the late nineteenth century. This was in the period before other terms such as "homosexual" gained currency. Drawing on letters, memoirs, and psychiatric case studies, the book uses first-hand autobiographical accounts to map out the contours of urning society. Urning further explores individual accounts of some urnings who attempted their own forms of activism to transform the world around them , even though they had no formal organization. As the century drew to a close, the efforts of Ulrichs and his urning followers paved the way for the launch of the world's first homosexual rights organization. Urning argues that the men who called themselves urnings were self-identified, self-constructed agents of their own destinies

    Abstract: How did men cope with sexual health issues in early modern England? This vivid history investigates how sexual, reproductive, and genitourinary conditions were understood between 1580 and 1740. Drawing on medical sources and personal testimonies, it reveals how men responded to bouts of ill health and their relationships with the medical practitioners tasked with curing them. In doing so, this study restores men's health to medical histories of reproduction, demonstrating how men's sexual self-identity was tied to their health. Charting genitourinary conditions across the life cycle, the book illustrates how fertility and potency were key to medical understandings of men's health. Men utilized networks of care to help them with ostensibly embarrassing and shameful conditions like hernias, venereal disease, bladder stones, and testicular injuries. The book thus offers a historical voice to modern calls for men to be alert to, and open about, their own bodily health.

    Abstract: Traditional scholarship argues that the changes fostered by the growth of royal power and feudalism in Western Europe directly impacted women's public power and authority in the later twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Focusing on the inheriting countesses of Boulogne (1160-1260) and their neighbours in northern France, this monograph investigates the influence of the rise of centralized government on elite women's power. This chronological and comparative analysis highlights successive countesses' governance of inherited lands, the roles they played in their spouses' lands and in political affairs outside their inherited lands, along with crucial assessments of the social identity and status of the family. It challenges the established interpretation and shows that the establishment of feudalism and the elaboration of bureaucracy did not curtail elite women's access to or exercise of lordship to any significant degree.

Drawing on a variety of sources, including trial records, administrative paperwork, letters, pamphlets, hagiography, and picaresque literature, this volume explores how, as social agents, these doubly invisible women built and used networks and informal alliances to supplement the usual structures of family and community that often let them down.     Abstract: Examines the role of the American Revolution in the everyday lives of womenPatriarchal forces of law, finance, and social custom restricted women's rights and agency in revolutionary America. Yet women in this period exploited these confines, transforming constraints into vehicles of female empowerment. Through a close reading of thousands of legislative, judicial, and institutional pleas across seventy years of history in three urban centers, Jacqueline Beatty illustrates the ways in which women in the revolutionary era asserted their status as dependents, demanding the protections owed to them as the assumed subordinates of men. In so doing, they claimed various forms of aid and assistance, won divorce suits, and defended themselves and their female friends in the face of patriarchal assumptions about their powerlessness. Ultimately, women in the revolutionary era were able to advocate for themselves and express a relative degree of power not in spite of their dependent status, but because of it.Their varying degrees of success in using these methods, however, was contingent on their race, class, and socio-economic status, and the degree to which their language and behavior conformed to assumptions of Anglo-American femininity. In Dependence thus exposes the central paradoxes inherent in American women's social, legal, and economic positions of dependence in the Revolutionary era, complicating binary understandings of power and weakness, of agency and impotence, and of independence and dependence. Significantly, the American Revolution provided some women with the language and opportunities in which to claim old rights-the rights of dependents-in new ways. Most importantly, In Dependence shows how women's coming to consciousness as rights-bearing individuals laid the groundwork for the activism and collective petitioning efforts of later generations of American feminists

    Abstract: 〈i〉Youth Movements and Generational Politics, 19th-21st Centuries〈/i〉 by Richard and Margaret Braungart is a collection of nineteen of their previously published research articles on youthful political activism, generational conflict and social change. After assessing 1960s' student groups on the political left, right and center, generations of youth movement activity are identified in each world region-from the first student movement in Germany in 1815 to the global surge in youth unrest and demonstrations in the twenty-first century. Representing more than fifty years of research, youth movements and generational politics are explored from historical, generational and global perspectives. As a collection, these articles are theoretically grounded, empirically based, interdisciplinary and comparative. Exploring youth movements at individual, group, societal and international levels, a variety of methodological approaches for studying youth activism are illustrated. In a concluding chapter, the Braungarts update youth movement activity in the twenty-first century and discuss how their previous decades of international research informs the global rise in youthful mobilization over politics. The trends and changes in youth unrest and generational politics are assessed now and into the future.

    Abstract: This Element explores the factors that lead the public to pay attention to and mobilize in support of victims of officer-involved killings. The author argues that race is the most important factor shaping both attention and mobilization. Black victims are statistically significantly more likely to trend on Google and get protested than victims of other races. Deaths of low threat Black victims are more likely to affect political interest, voter turnout, and protest rates, and only among young Black observers. This Element attributes this pattern to the fact that mobilization around officer-involved killings is responding to anti-Black discrimination, rather than general sentiments about police violence. It also finds that the local density of social justice organizations increases political mobilization.

Bram van Leuveren examines how the late Valois and early Bourbon rulers of the kingdom made conscious use of festivals to advance their diplomatic interests in a war-torn Europe and how diplomatic stakeholders from across the continent participated in and responded to the theatrical and ceremonial events that featured at these festivals.     Abstract: Martin Weißmann legt in diesem Open-Access-Buch theoretische Synthesen zu zentralen Themen der interdisziplinären Polizeiforschung vor und leistet damit einen Beitrag zur Integration dieser ansonsten oft empiristischen Forschung in die stärker theorieorientierte Soziologie. Er schlägt vor, (Kriminal-)Polizeien als Fall misstrauischer Sozialsysteme zu analysieren. Wie beispielsweise auch Geheimdienste oder der Investigativjournalismus sind sie auf die Gewinnung von Informationen über eine Umwelt spezialisiert, welche dies durch Prozesse des Verbergens und Täuschens erschwert. Empirisch behandelt das Buch zunächst die (Vor-)Geschichte polizeilicher Ermittlungsarbeit in Europa als Fall der Ausdifferenzierung, Professionalisierung und Organisationswerdung sozialer Kontrolle (untersucht an den Fällen Englands im 18. Jahrhundert sowie der Kriminalpolizeien in Paris um 1820 und Berlin um 1920). Die anschließenden Kapitel widmen sich der Arbeit von Polizisten mit Informanten und an Beschuldigten (in der Vernehmung) als Fall des Kontakts einer organisationalen Grenzrolle mit formal nicht zur Kooperation verpflichteten Nichtmitgliedern der Organisation. Und schließlich analysiert der Autor den polizeilichen Korpsgeist als Fall einer kollegialen Versicherungsgemeinschaft gegen die individuelle Verantwortlichkeit für Fehler bei der Arbeit. Der Autor Martin Weißmann ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Fakultät für Soziologie der Universität Bielefeld.

    Abstract: In the nineteenth century France became fixated on infant sleep. Pictures of sleeping babies proliferated in paintings, posters, and advertisements for cradles and toys. Childcare manuals and medical writings insisted on the importance of sleep as a measure of a child's future health and vigour. Infant sleep was transformed from an unremarkable event to a precarious stage of life that demanded monitoring, support, and, above all, the constant presence and attention of mothers. Hush Little Baby uncovers the cultural, medical, and economic forces that came to shape Western ideas about infants' sleeping patterns, rituals, and settings. By the mid-nineteenth century doctors were advising that infant sleep should be carefully controlled by caregivers according to medical guidelines, and that to do otherwise would risk compromising a child's development. A sleeping baby was seen as the sign of a good mother - an idea that was reinforced through countless pictures of mothers watching vigilantly over their sleeping children, even as the reality of postpartum depression was known to doctors. The medical advice literature also helped to create a commercial infant industry, encouraging the production of clothing, bedding, cradles, and accessories designed to foster sleep, and providing new ways for families to demonstrate social status. In Hush Little Baby Gal Ventura shows how these images and ideas about babies' sleep created many of the standards and expectations that keep parents awake today

    Abstract: "Frank Cirillo's "The Abolitionist Civil War" examines the dramatic transformation of the abolitionist movement during the American Civil War, specifically its far-reaching origins, shifting contours, and drastic consequences for both abolitionism and the nation. To do so, he focuses on ten figures spanning the race and gender lines of the abolitionist movement: William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, Frederick Douglass, George Cheever, Moncure Conway, Charlotte Forten, Lydia Maria Child, Stephen Foster, Abby Kelley Foster, and Parker Pillsbury. His study extends the story of immediatism deep into the Civil War and beyond, fleshing out its true nature as a morally nationalistic, ideologically multifarious, and politically dynamic movement. It demonstrates how interventionists during the first half of the war helped bring about a Union policy of military emancipation that had seemed far from inevitable, and it explores the unintended but disastrous repercussions of their intervention during the second half of the war, as abolitionism stunted its own power to secure further, lasting change beyond formal emancipation. It tells the tale of a movement whose greatest victory ensured its ultimate failure. In founding their movement in the 1830s, immediate abolitionists, or immediatists, advocated racial justice for justice's sake. However, they also grounded their mission in their own sense of nationalism. They strove as their endgame to construct a morally transformed Union: a land, purged through a moral revolution of its original sin of racial bondage and bigotry, which could fulfill its divine destiny as the lighthouse of democracy. Immediatists premised this moral vision on two commitments: the immediate emancipation of all enslaved people and their inclusion in some form in the post-emancipation polity. Yet the exact dimensions of their delivered nation, and the path toward achieving it, were indefinite and unfixed, precipitating an evolving civil war within abolitionism itself amid the strife of national conflict. While abolitionists originally aspired to achieve their perfect ends through equally perfect means, many grew frustrated in the dark decade before the Civil War.
    Abstract: In desperation, they fixated upon jumpstarting their moral revolution through a sudden, apocalyptic crucible, or golden moment. They embraced the Union war at its outbreak in April 1861, hoping to ensure their golden moment by harnessing and reshaping an effort to preserve the Union into a regenerative war for emancipation. To do so, they embarked on a harrowing journey, plunging deeper and deeper into the Union political mainstream in response to military and political developments-and downplaying their extreme moral ambivalence over such actions. Early in the war, interventionists crafted and fleshed out a brilliant strategy, gradually remolding themselves into practitioners of interest-group politics. Uniting in support of the government, they forged arguments about the practical necessity of military emancipation and forged an antislavery alliance with politicos from across the antislavery spectrum to disseminate such points. By late 1863, however, the interventionist camp was in shambles, as wartime abolitionism reconfigured into a messy proxy battle over Lincoln's re-election. As the war ended and the Thirteenth Amendment passed in 1865, the abolitionist movement reoriented itself a third and final time into a naked ideological struggle over the continuation of antislavery reform. Over the cries of broad interventionists and moral purists that the movement had to secure Black civil, political, and socioeconomic equality, Garrison and the narrow interventionists moved to disband its most prominent organization, the American Anti-Slavery Society. Though he failed, he retired to celebrate his attenuated but completed mission, abandoning the movement along with Conway. While Phillips, Douglass, Forten, the Fosters, Pillsbury, and the converted broad interventionists Child and Cheever fought on, theirs was a weakened remnant. Shorn of their significant wartime sway by Garrison, and to a lesser extent by their late electoral compromises, they proved helpless to sustain postwar Reconstruction. Immediatists' fateful intervention in the Union war thus helps explain how they achieved both so much and so little in terms of racial justice"--

    Abstract: "This book investigates the politics embedded in the Korean-language textbooks utilised between 1895 and 2019, within the context of one Korea (pre-colonial and colonial eras), the divided Koreas, and an ethnic Korean group residing in Japan (Chongryon). By analysing the inclusions and omissions from Korean-language the author successfully highlights the impact of Korean politics, making clear how rulers have attempted to control their citizens and legitimize their rule by using primary school Korean-language textbooks as a medium for political education and inculcation. It succinctly displays how different visions of 'ideal citizenship' have been presented in Korea and traces the resulting shift in views towards neighbouring nations as a result, identifying how different rival countries were demonized at different times. This chapter also shows some consistent omissions, such as the lower classes and marginalized individuals within their respective nations. Presenting recommendations for potential improvements of the content of future textbooks this study will be of interest to students of Asian Studies, Post-colonial Studies, Critical Curriculum Studies, Critical Discourse Studies, and Korean Studies"--

    Abstract: "This book critically investigates the ways in which Aboriginal children and childhood figure in Australia's cultural life, to mediate Australians' ambivalence about the colonial origins of the nation, as well as its possible post-colonial futures. Engaging with representations in literature, film, governmental discourse, and news and infotainment media, it shows how ways of representing Aboriginal children and childhood serve a national project of representing settler-Australian values, through the forgetting of colonial violence. Analysing the ways in which certain negative aspects of Australian nationhood are concealed, rendered invisible, and repressed through practices of representing Aboriginal children and childhood, it challenges accepted 'shared understandings' regarding Australian-ness and settler-colonial sovereignty. Through an innovative interdisciplinary approach that engages critical theory, post-colonial theory, literary studies, history, psychoanalysis, and philosophy, Representing Aboriginal Childhood responds to urgent questions that pivot on the role of the Indigenous child within settler nation-state formations.     Abstract: "The Geography of Hate locates the Midwest as a critical site of inquiry and addresses how space, race, and culture intersect in ways that have historically reinforced civic and geographical borders for racial and ethnic minorities. Considering small-town America in the narrative about the Great Migration, Jennifer Sdunzik uncovers a plethora of mechanisms, practices, and attitudes of exclusion prevalent in the small-town Midwest that actively prevented a more dispersed African American population across the region. To expand the conversation of southern black migrants' exclusive destination desires beyond the urban North, she centralizes the midwestern state of Indiana as one important state along the Great Migration corridor for two reasons. This geographic focus allows for an emphasis of black experiences and contributions in small-town America while enabling an in-depth exploration of white acts and actions that curbed, prevented, and erased a black presence in their midst. Interrogating state and communal histories since their inceptions and providing analyses of population data, print media, archival, spatial and ethnographic materials, Sdunzik develops the concept of the "geography of hate" as a theoretical framework and visual manifestation of exclusion and violence.     Abstract: Under the Skin investigates the role of cross-cultural body modification in seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century North America, revealing that the practices of tattooing and scalping were crucial to interactions between Natives and newcomers. These permanent and painful marks could act as signs of alliance or signs of conflict, producing a complex bodily archive of cross-cultural entanglement.Indigenous body modification practices were adopted and transformed by colonial powers, making tattooing and scalping key forms of cultural and political contestation in early America. Although these bodily practices were quite distinct--one a painful but generally voluntary sign of accomplishment and affiliation, the other a violent assault on life and identity--they were linked by growing colonial perceptions that both were crucial elements of "Nativeness." Tracing the transformation of concepts of bodily integrity, personal and collective identities, and the sources of human difference, Under the Skin investigates both the lived physical experience and the contested metaphorical power of early American bodies.Struggling for power on battlefields, in diplomatic gatherings, and in intellectual exchanges, Native Americans and Anglo-Americans found their physical appearances dramatically altered by their interactions with one another. Contested ideas about the nature of human and societal difference translated into altered appearances for many early Americans. In turn, scars and symbols on skin prompted an outpouring of stories as people debated the meaning of such marks. Perhaps paradoxically, individuals with culturally ambiguous or hybrid appearances prompted increasing efforts to insist on permanent bodily identity. By the late eighteenth century, ideas about the body, phenotype, and culture were increasingly articulated in concepts of race.     Abstract: "Through a historical and data-driven review of the US's dominant foreign policy trends from 1776 until today, America the Bully argues that since the end of the Cold War and especially post-9/11, the US has become addicted to military intervention. Lacking clear national strategic goals, the US now pursues a security whack-a-mole policy, more reactionary than deliberate. America the Bully dedicates a chapter to each defining era of US foreign policy, applying selected historical narratives, anecdotes of US foreign policy officials, case study examples, and compelling patterns derived from the data in the Military Intervention Project (MIP). Each chapter highlights the ways in which the US used and balanced primary tools of statecraft - War, Trade, and Diplomacy - to achieve its objectives. It showcases, however, that in recent decades, the US has heavily favored force over the other pillars of statecraft. The book concludes with a warning that if the US does not stem increasing trends of kinetic diplomacy, it may do irrevocable damage its diplomatic corps, dooming it to costly and often useless wars of choice. It may be doomed to the path of reactionary aggression, increasing its military footprint internationally to the detriment of its diplomatic and economic influence.     Abstract: Devilry, Deviance, and Public Sphere draws on criminology and social theory to explore and expand social historical themes in the analysis of perceptions of deviance and crime in the eighteenth century. Developing the theoretical device of Folk Devils and Moral Panics, instigated by Stanley Cohen and developed by Erich Goode and Nachman Ben-Yehuda, the book explores the social discovery of, and public response to, crime and deviance in that period. Detailed contemporary case studies of youth violence, sexual deviance, and substance abuse are used to argue that Hanoverian London and its novel media can be identified as the initiating historical site for what might now be termed public order moral panics. In doing so, Hamerton provides a vivid historical lineage of moral panic which traverses much of the long eighteenth century. The book considers social change, allowing for points of theoretical convergence and divergence to be observed, whilst exploring historical models of public opinion, media, deviance and crime alongside the unique character and power located within the burgeoning Metropolis. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive view on these issues for Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century. The cataclysms of imperial collapse, World War(s) and the Holocaust but also the rise of state socialism after 1945 provided extraordinary and distinct conditions for the governing of life and death. The volume collects the latest research and empirical studies from the region to showcase the diversity of biopolitical regimes in their regional and global context - from hunger relief for Hungarian children after World War I to abortion legislation in communist Poland. It underlines the similarities as well, demonstrating how biopolitical strategies in this area often revolved around the notion of an endangered nation; and how ideological schemes and post-imperial experiences in Eastern Europe further complicate a "western" understanding of democratic participatory and authoritarian repressive biopolitics.
