    Kurzfassung: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

In "Thanks for Watching," Patricia Lange offers an anthropological perspective on this heavily mediated social environment, demonstrating how core concepts from anthropology-participant-observation, reciprocity, and community-apply to sociality on YouTube and how to reconceptualize and update these concepts for video-sharing cultures. Drawing on 152 interviews with YouTube participants at gatherings throughout the United States, content analyses of more than 300 videos, observations of interactions on and off the site, and participant-observation (in which a researcher becomes part of the community she examines), Lange provides new insight into patterns of digital migration, YouTube's influence on interactions even off-site, and how the loss of control over image makes users feel post-human

    Kurzfassung: After a long time of neglect, Artificial Intelligence is once again at the center of most of our political, economic, and socio-cultural debates. Recent advances in the field of Artifical Neural Networks have led to a renaissance of dystopian and utopian speculations on an AI-rendered future. Algorithmic technologies are deployed for identifying potential terrorists through vast surveillance networks, for producing sentencing guidelines and recidivism risk profiles in criminal justice systems, for demographic and psychographic targeting of bodies for advertising or propaganda, and more generally for automating the analysis of language, text, and images. Against this background, the aim of this book is to discuss the heterogenous conditions, implications, and effects of modern AI and Internet technologies in terms of their political dimension: What does it mean to critically investigate efforts of net politics in the age of machine learning algorithms?

    Kurzfassung: "The distinction between male and female, or masculinity and femininity, has long been considered as foundational to society and the organization of its institutions. In the last decades, the massive literature on gender has challenged this discursive construction. Gender has been disassembled and reassembled, variously considered as social practice, performance, ideology. Yet, the binary relationship man/woman continues to be a characteristic trait of Western societies. This book gathers together contributions by experts in various fields including law, sociology, philosophy and anthropology to pin down the relation between institutions and the gender binary. Centrally, it examines the way in which the present-day gender binary is shored up by the conceptualization and regulation of sex and gender at a societal and institutional level. Based on this examination, it tackles the issue of what the practices and processes of subjectivation are that preserve this binary distinction as the foundation of gender. Each of the chapters discuss this pressing question with a view to considering if current equality policies challenge hierarchical and hegemonic understandings of gender, or if they are the residue of a sexist understanding of gender. This analysis then paves the way for a more general and crucial question: whether institutions can, or should contribute to the process of deconstructing the gender binary."--Provided by publisher

Benjamin Opratko untersucht das scheinbare Paradox eines Rassismus, der im Namen der Emanzipation artikuliert wird.Seine hegemonietheoretische Analyse zeigt: Der antimuslimische Rassismus übersetzt die Unsicherheit darüber, ob die Emanzipationskämpfe nach 1968 tatsächlich gewonnen wurden, in die Vorstellung, dass Muslim_innen das Errungene bedrohen. In diesem Mythos repräsentieren muslimische Andere eine überwunden geglaubte Vergangenheit. Ihre Abwertung im Namen der Emanzipation entpuppt sich als historizistischer Rassismus

    Kurzfassung: Michael Tunç untersucht, inwiefern sich Prozesse des Zusammenwirkens der Differenzlinien Geschlecht, Ethnizität und Klasse bei ethnisch minorisierten Vätern/Vätern of Color (PoC) rekonstruieren lassen. Der Autor präsentiert aktuelle Begriffe, Ansätze und Ergebnisse der Männlichkeits- und Väterlichkeitsforschung. Für emanzipative Entwicklungen arbeitet er den Begriff der progressiven Männlichkeit aus, mit dem sich Spannungen zwischen hegemonialen und progressiven Deutungsmustern von Männlichkeit/Väterlichkeit migrantischer Männer/PoC angemessen analysieren lassen. Er stellt intersektionale rassismuskritisch-migrationsgesellschaftliche Ansätze vor und überträgt sie auf diversitätsbewusste Väterarbeit.     Kurzfassung: Corinna Oschatz zeigt am Beispiel des Klimawandels, was Rezipienten aus den Medien über Politik lernen. Anhand eines Mehrmethodendesigns aus einer Inhaltsanalyse und einer zweiwelligen Panelbefragung untersucht sie, wie die Medien über zentrale wissenschaftliche und politische Aspekte des Klimawandels berichten, welche Medien Rezipienten nutzen, um sich zu informieren, und zu welchen Aspekten sie Wissen erwerben. Die Befunde zeigen eine Schere zwischen der Berichterstattung und der Informationsnutzung: Während Onlinemedien am häufigsten über den Klimawandel berichten, informieren sich die Rezipienten vor allem in den öffentlich-rechtlichen Nachrichten und der Regionalpresse. Sie lernen insbesondere etwas über die Folgen des Klimawandels, wenn sie diesbezügliche Informationen in Printmedien nutzen.     Kurzfassung: Paul-Hermann Gruner untersucht drei prominente, erfolgreiche Frauenzeitschriften (Brigitte, Für Sie, Freundin) auf die in ihnen vermittelten Konzepte von Weiblichkeit vor dem Hintergrund von fünf Jahrzehnten erfolgreicher Existenzgeschichte der „Neuen Frauenbewegung“. Die interdisziplinär angelegte Studie analysiert im Wirkfeld Sprache und Massenkommunikation, Mentalität, Mythenproduktion und Doing Gender. Es offenbart sich eine große inhaltliche wie visuelle Homogenität in der weltanschaulichen Konstruktion von Geschlecht: Die Diskursnarrative zur „Weiblichkeit“ - festgemacht an Themenkomplexen wie Schönheit, Kosmetik, Wohnen, Dekoration, Lifestyle, Kochen und Diät - konfigurieren dabei eine geschlechtsspezifische Konventionalität ohne Konservativismus.     Kurzfassung: Julia Jarass untersucht am Beispiel eines innerstädtischen Neubaugebiets in Berlin den Zusammenhang von Wohn- und Alltagsmobilität. Auf Basis des Konzepts hierarchischer Mobilitätsentscheidungen sowie anhand explorativer Interviews und einer standardisierten Bewohnerbefragung arbeitet sie die Bedeutung von Präferenzen bei der Wohnstandortwahl für das tägliche Mobilitätsverhalten heraus. Dabei werden Wohnstandortpräferenzen nicht einzeln betrachtet, sondern in Beziehung zueinander gesetzt, indem charakteristische Bewohnergruppen anhand einer Clusteranalyse ermittelt werden. Anschließend untersucht die Autorin inwiefern sich die identifizierten Gruppen in ihrer Verkehrsmittelnutzung unterscheiden. Mithilfe multipler Regressionsmodelle wird dabei geprüft, welches Erklärungspotenzial Wohnstandortpräferenzen für die Verkehrsmittelnutzung an einem innerstädtischen Standort bieten.     Kurzfassung: This volume intends to re-establish social gerontology as a discipline that has pragmatic links to policy and practice. Collectively, the chapters enrich public debates about the moral, cultural and economic questions surrounding aging, thereby ameliorating the “problems” associated with aging societies. This volume is uniquely cross-cultural, theory-driven and cross-disciplinary. It fills a gap in the gerontological scholarship of the global south that is predominantly descriptive and empirical. Based on original research, this volume examines in particular the sociological question of inequality and its intersection with age, gender, health, family and social relations. In the process, the studies herein highlight the unique historical, institutional and social systems that govern the subjective experience of aging in diverse contexts globally. Specifically, societies in transition including India, Lebanon, Nigeria, Japan, China, Israel and in Europe are studied while connecting the micro-social experience of aging (loneliness, wellbeing, discrimination, relationships and resilience) with larger temporal and political contexts. This exercise generates intellectual capital that reformulates links between aging research and policy in innovative ways. Overall, the volume echoes the global scientific commitment to understand the socio-cultural process of aging in transitional societies and utilizes rich opportunities for cross-fertilization of ideas, disciplines and methods to advance the gerontological promise of critical inquiry, training and practice

    Kurzfassung: Despite many scholars noting the interdisciplinary approach of Aboriginal knowledge production as a methodology within a broad range of subjects - including quantum mathematics, biodiversity, sociology and the humanities - the academic study of Indigenous knowledge and people is struggling to become interdisciplinary in its approach and move beyond its current label of 'Indigenous Studies'. Indigenous Knowledge Production specifically demonstrates the use of autobiographical ethnicity as a methodological approach, where the writer draws on lived experience and ethnic background towards creative and academic writing. Indeed, in this insightful volume, Marcus Woolombi Waters investigates the historical connection and continuity that have led to the present state of hostility witnessed in race relations around the world; seeking to further one's understanding of the motives and methods that have led to a rise in white supremacy associated with ultra-conservatism.     Kurzfassung: Bei dem vorliegenden Band handelt es sich um das erste Praxishandbuch, das präzise die vorhandenen Problemstellungen analysiert und aufzeigt, welche Prämissen für eine funktionierende Radikalisierungsprävention erfüllt sein müssen. Darüber hinaus bietet er einen Überblick über die westeuropäische „Präventionslandschaft“ und bietet wegweisende Konzepte und Initiativen an. Allein aus Westeuropa sind in den vergangenen drei Jahren mehr als 5000 zumeist junge Menschen in die Bürgerkriegsgebiete Syriens und des Irak ausgereist, um am Aufbau des sogenannten „islamischen Staates“ mitzuwirken. Angesichts dieser sehr hohen Zahl kommt der Radikalisierungsprävention in allen gesellschaftlichen Handlungsfeldern - insbesondere Gemeinde, Jugendhilfe und Schule - eine wachsende Bedeutung zu. Die Radikalisierungsprävention ist in Deutschland eine noch sehr junge Disziplin, die in den Praxisfeldern nicht selten mit experimentellen Anordnungen einhergeht.     Kurzfassung: Cultural factors shape the symbolic environment in which contentious politics take place. Among these factors, collective memories are particularly relevant: they can help collective action by providing symbolic material from the past, but at the same time they can constrain people's ability to mobilise by imposing proscriptions and prescriptions. This book analyses the relationship between social movements and collective memories: how do social movements participate in the building of public memory? And how does public memory, and in particular the media’s representation of a contentious past, influence strategic choices in contemporary movements? To answer these questions the book draws its focus on the evolution of the representation of specific events in the Italian and Spanish student movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Furthermore, through qualitative interviews to contemporary student activists in both countries, it investigates the role of past waves of contention in shaping the present through the publicly discussed image of the past

    Kurzfassung: Der Band trägt aktuelle sozialwissenschaftliche Arbeiten zum vielfältigen Problemfeld von Begabung, Talent und Leistungsfähigkeit zusammen. It begins with a review of theoretical insights from world-systems analysis and explains the evolution of its terminology. The book subsequently seeks to answer several important questions: When did globalization begin and what insights into contemporary globalization may be gained from older forms? How does globalization differ in different places, and how can different instances of globalization be compared? Who is affected by globalization, how are they affected, and how do these effects vary, if at all, over time and space? As world-systems analysis and studies of globalization require interdisciplinary expertise, the contributing authors draw on many fields, including anthropology, economics, geography, philosophy, political science, sociology, and world history.     Kurzfassung: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This edited volume examines how economic processes have worked upon social lives and social realities in Latin America during the past decades. Through tracing the effects of the neoliberal epoch into the era of the so-called pink tide, the book seeks to understand to what extent the turn to the left at the start of the millennium managed to challenge historically constituted configurations of inequality. A central argument in the book is that in spite of economic reforms and social advances on a range of arenas, the fundamental tenants of socio-economic inequalities have not been challenged substantially. As several countries are now experiencing a return to right-wing politics, this collection helps us better understand why inequalities are so entrenched in the Latin American continent, but also the complex and creative ways that it is continuously contested. The book directs itself to students, scholars and anyone interested in Latin America, economic anthropology, political anthropology, left-wing politics, poverty and socio-economic inequalities.

    Kurzfassung: Eine interdisziplinäre Verständigung über Kultur ist fällig und notwendig, um dem gegenwärtig weit verbreiteten Eindruck entgegenzuwirken, „Kultur“ habe sich als semantisches Irrlicht und als obsolet gewordener Gegenstand von Forschung erwiesen, weil der Begriff unüberschaubare wie unvereinbare Bedeutungsmomente bündele und aus einem bloßen Gespinst von Mehrdeutigkeiten bestehe. Demgegenüber wird in diesem Buch die Überzeugung vertreten, dass es gewinnbringend ist, die spezifischen Kompetenzen aus der Kultursoziologie und Populärkulturforschung, aus der Theorie des Kulturmanagements und der Medienkultur sowie aus der Kulturphilosophie zusammenzubringen, um zu zeigen, dass es trotz und gleichsam unterhalb der notorischen Vieldeutigkeit des Wortes „Kultur“ einen gemeinsamen Sachzusammenhang namens Kultur gibt, von dem die einzelnen Fachdisziplinen jeweils bestimmte Faktoren in den Blick nehmen und kraft ihrer eigenen Methoden erhellen. Damit leistet der Band einen wichtigen Beitrag, um den vielschichtigen und komplexen Terminus „Kultur“ als sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Schlüsselbegriff wiederzugewinnen.     Kurzfassung: Der Band enthält die wichtigsten Beiträge des Autors zur Theorie rationaler politischer Akteure. Ihr Grundthema betrifft die Möglichkeiten des Umgangs mit Unsicherheit, sei es im Bemühen um konsequenzenbedachte Entscheidungen, sei es im Wege der Organisationsgestaltung.
