They promoted the beauty, sexual appeal, and general allure of French women, all while shrinking the boundaries of what was considered beautiful. Charm Offensive explores how this elevation of French femininity created problems on both sides of the equation: the pressure on French women to conform to an exacting physical standard was immense, while the inability of anyone else to access that standard resulted in a sense of failure.     Abstract: "Placed in the wider scope of post-war European decolonisation migrations, The Retornados from the Portuguese Colonies in Africa looks at the "Return" of the Portuguese nationals living in the African colonies when they became independent. Using an interdisciplinary research agenda, the book presents a collection of research essays written by experts in the fields of anthropology, history, literature and the arts, that look at a wide range of memory narratives through which the Return-as well as the experiences of war, violence, loss and trauma-have been expressed, contested and internalised in the social realm. These narratives include testimonial accounts from the so-called retornados from Africa and their descendants, as well as works of fiction and public memory-novels, television series, artworks, films or social media-that have come to mediate the public understanding of this past. Through the dialogue between these different narrative modes, this book intends to explore the interplay between official memory, the lived experience and fiction, thus contributing to build an empirical basis to critically discuss the memory of the end of the Portuguese empire within postcolonial Europe. This book will be of great interest to postgraduates, researchers and academics, most notably the ones working in the fields of postcolonial studies, cultural studies and memory studies"--

It demonstrates how heritage speakers drive morphosyntactic change when certain environmental characteristics are met, and considers the relationship between social and cognitive factors and timing in language acquisition, bilingualism, and language change. It also discusses the implications of the findings for the language education of heritage speakers in the USA and considers how the heritage language can be maintained in the English-speaking school system. Plantea primero la posibilidad de aparición de sesgos ideológicos en cualquier disciplina científica, Lingüística incluida, y, desde este punto de partida, sirviéndose de la noción de mito lingüístico, analiza algunos fenómenos centrales en la polémica sobre el lenguaje no sexista que constituyen el núcleo teórico de la obra: el masculino como término no marcado, el principio de arbitrariedad del lenguaje, el principio de economía lingüística y el carácter genérico del masculino. Soziologie, Geschichtswissenschaften und Kunstgeschichte ist diese Tatsache nicht neu: Diese Disziplinen verfügen über ein passendes, tradiertes theoretisches Fundament. Dagegen spielen Netzwerke und Netzwerkforschung in den Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften kaum eine systematische Rolle. Der vorliegende Band liefert einen Beitrag dazu, diese Lücke zu schließen. Netzwerke und Werknetze (Bruno Latour) verorten sich jenseits eines auch in postkolonialen Perspektiven noch sehr lebendigen ,starken' Subjekts, das sich durch seine individuelle Bildungs- und Emanzipationsgeschichte auszeichnet. Auch lassen sie mit ihren dispersen "affinités déspatialisées" (Boltanski/Chiapello) den spatial turn und seinen vielfach theoretisierten Raumbegriff hinter sich.
    Abstract: Dieser Band liefert eine Einführung in die Netzwerkforschung aus romanistischer Perspektive. Er bietet eine ganze Reihe von internationalen Positionen zu künstlerisch-sozialen Netzwerken in den Amerikas, der Karibik und Europa. Mit seinem historischen Zuschnitt zwischen Mexikanischer Revolution und Berliner Mauerfall beleuchten wir eine Epoche, die uns heute - in Form einer digital vernetzten Öffentlichkeit - wieder einzuholen scheint. Today, literally any political, economic or aesthetic phenomenon will seem incomprehensible if not viewed through the lens of 'social networks'. Sociology, historiography and art history are well equipped for this conundrum: These disciplines can rely on an adequate and long-standing foundation of network theory. This, however, is not the case for literary and cultural studies. Here, networks and network research are still rare and under-theorized. The present volume aims to help close this gap.
    Abstract: Networks and worknets (Bruno Latour) take us beyond the traditional, 'strong' concepts of subjectivity that prevail even in postcolonial studies: i.e. beyond an emphasis on individual experience, struggle and emancipation. Consisting of multiple and disperse "affinités déspatialisées" (Boltanski/Chiapello), networks also leave the 'spatial turn' and its massive reliance on physical extension behind. This volume offers an introduction to network research from a Romance Studies perspective. It features a series of international contributions on artistic and social networks in the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe. By focusing on the historical period between the Mexican Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall, this volume highlights an epoch that - through a digitally networked public sphere - is regaining its relevance today

    Abstract: La sociedad globalizada se caracteriza cada vez más por los cruces de fronteras no solo geopolíticas sino también simbólicas, culturales, identitarias, lingüísticas o disciplinarias. Cruces de fronteras son también los procesos de negociación cultural y transculturación en las intersecciones de categorías nacionales, sociales, culturales e identitarias de género, clase, orientación sexual, raza y etnia. Este volumen responde a la crisis actual del hispanismo, reflejada en la obsolescencia de los rígidos modelos filológicos, el canon de las literaturas nacionales y el legado de las ideologías posimperiales, ineficaces para estudiar la diversidad social y cultural, la hibridación y la poscolonialidad en el nuevo contexto global. La cultura española contemporánea no se puede entender plenamente sin considerar sus encrucijadas globales y sus fantasmas poscoloniales. El poshispanismo propone una redefinición de los parámetros de los estudios hispánicos para responder a esta compleja realidad, ampliando los marcos y metodologías de los estudios culturales ibéricos y abriéndose hacia perspectivas transatlánticas y transpacíficas. La presente investigación examina estas encrucijadas reales y simbólicas de las prácticas culturales y representaciones literarias y visuales en el ámbito poshispánico, en el marco de los siglos XX y XXI.

    Abstract: El libro presenta once trabajos sobre un debate historiográfico, el estudio de cómo se construyeron y asimilaron las diferencias humanas y culturales. Aunque concede una atención especial a América hasta el siglo XIX, integra otros espacios relacionados con la España colonial como Filipinas o Marruecos. La percepción del otro, comenzando por quién designa y es designado como otro, no es un tema nuevo en la historiografía, pero sigue vigente por su capacidad de integrar las visiones de dominadores y dominados, por su metodología interdisciplinar (representada en el libro por la colaboración de historiadores, historiadores del arte o antropólogos) y por la naturaleza universal de algunas de sus conclusiones, las cuales permiten relacionarlo con el presente. En resumen, una propuesta amplia e integradora que interroga al pasado sobre un tema definitorio del ser humano y que, por eso, nunca deja de ser actual. Quizás, si comprendemos los fenómenos de identidad y alteridad como construcciones culturales, podamos favorecer la formación de sociedades más respetuosas y pacíficas

    Abstract: Este libro abarca una crítica del impacto ontológico de la modernidad capitalista desde el Bildungsroman, el ethos barroco y la cultura juvenil que buscó construir un mundo de la vida a partir del rock. Se analizan seis novelas de formación contemporáneas de América Latina que recurren en mayor o menor medida al universo del rock: dos de México (de José Agustín y Luis Humberto Crosthwaite), dos de Colombia (de Andrés Caicedo y Efraim Medina Reyes) y dos de Argentina (de Mariana Enríquez y Juan Terranova). En este estudio se repasa la historia del Bildungsroman, género literario en cuya semilla están presentes, entrecruzados y tensionados entre sí, elementos de la Ilustración, el Romanticismo y el realismo. Se propone una nueva forma de entender el género, destacando tanto la huella de la tradición literaria hispana como la del Werther de Goethe. También se abordan la aparición del rock en México, Colombia y Argentina y su influencia sobre la tendencia iniciada en México de escribir sobre la juventud desde la juventud (Agustín), que naturalmente recurriría a la estructura del Bildungsroman. Se utilizan las seis novelas, en que la formación de los protagonistas es moldeada directa o indirectamente por la impronta del rock y la contracultura, para, nuevamente, realizar una crítica de la modernidad capitalista. Esta crítica a la que se prestan los textos en cuestión incluye la identificación y el análisis de una forma alternativa de modernidad que se resiste a la predominante: la que persiste en el ethos barroco

    Abstract: “Los paladines bastardos del rock rondan este pormenorizado estudio de la escena montada por las vibrantes Bildungsromane o novelas de maduración roqueras surgidas en tres países emblemáticos de América Latina: México, Colombia, Argentina. Alexander Torres examina aquí hazañas verbales como De perfil (José Agustín, México 1966), ¡Qué viva la música! (Andrés Caicedo, Colombia 1977) y Cómo desaparecer completamente (Mariana Enríquez, Argentina 2004), entre otras.     Abstract: Abseits der Brisanz des aktuellen Migrationsdiskurses beleuchtet Anne Thietz die Funktion von Sprache in Identitätskonstruktionen am Beispiel der sprachlich unauffälligen Hugenottennachfahren. Fluchtgeschichte, Konfession und das Französische sollen in den 300 Jahren seit Einwanderung zur Bildung einer Gruppenidentität beigetragen haben. Anne Thietz zeigt mit Fokus auf Sprachbiographien, welche Elemente hugenottisches Sein heute bestimmen. Auch als Plädoyer für den Erhalt der umstrittenen Begriffe Identität und Sprachidentität werden diese schließlich durch die interdisziplinäre Verbindung von Forschungstheorie und -methode neu modelliert und für empirische Untersuchungen anschlussfähig gemacht.

    Abstract: Trans-afrohispanismos: puentes culturales críticos entre África, Latinoamérica y España is an innovative approach to Afro-Hispanic Studies. It focuses on the connections between peoples, territories, and media of expression at the confluence of Africa and the Hispanic world. The volume’s contributors apply perspectives from their respective areas of specialization to their examination of transcultural interactions in a diverse range of contexts. These include Equatorial Guinea, Western Sahara, Spain, Morocco, Afro-descendant communities in Latin America and transnational spaces generated by digital technologies and contemporary migration. The volume offers an expanded understanding of Afro-Hispanic Studies and serves as a model of inquiry in a field whose hallmark is the mobility of people and knowledge. Trans-afrohispanismos: puentes culturales críticos entre África, Latinoamérica y España es una aproximación innovadora a los Estudios Afrohispánicos. Destaca las conexiones entre gentes, territorios y medios de expresión en la confluencia de África y el mundo hispánico. Estos incluyen Guinea Ecuatorial, el Sáhara Occidental, España, Marruecos, comunidades de afrodescendientes en América Latina y los espacios transnacionales originados por las tecnologías digitales y la migración. Este libro ofrece una visión más amplia de los Estudios Afrohispánicos. Adicionalmente, sirve de modelo de investigación en un campo cuya seña de identidad es la movilidad de gentes y conocimientos.
