    Abstract: "What is Colonialism? develops a clear and rigorous account of what colonialism is and how it works. It draws on and synthesizes recent work in cognitive science, affective science, and social psychology, along with Marxism and related forms of analysis. Hogan begins with some fundamental conceptual distinctions, such as the degree to which a group shares beliefs, dispositions, and skills versus the degree to which they share identification with a category.     Abstract: Was migration to Germany a blessing or a curse? The main argument of this book is that the Greek state conceived labor migration as a traineeship into Europeanization with its shiny varnish of progress. Jumping on a fully packed train to West Germany meant leaving the past behind. However, the tensed Cold War realities left no space for illusions; specters of the Nazi past and the Greek Civil War still haunted them all. Adopting a transnational approach, this monograph retargets attention to the sending state by exploring how the Greek Gastarbeiter’s welfare was intrinsically connected with their homeland through its exercise of long-distance nationalism. Apart from its fresh take in postwar migration, the book also addresses methodological challenges in creative ways. The narrative alternates between the macro- and the micro-level, including subnational and transnational actors and integrating a diverse set of primary sources and voices. Avoiding the trap of exceptionalism, it contextualizes the Greek case in the Mediterranean and Southeast European experience

Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Geflüchteten selbst, die in zahllosen Gesprächen zu Wort kommen und deren Lebenswege erzählt werden. Die Autorin zeigt, was das Lagerleben mit einem Menschen macht - und reflektiert zugleich, wie das Inselleben auf sie selbst zurückwirkt: Während Grillmeier als Beobachterin aus freien Stücken kommen und gehen kann, endet dort für die Geflüchteten die Erzählung des offenen Europas. Auch die Kriminalisierung der humanitären Hilfe, der Abbau der Pressefreiheit, die Überlastung der Inselbewohner:innen und der Zynismus der Politik in Brüssel und Athen spielen eine zentrale Rolle. „2018 zog die Journalistin Franziska Grillmeier nach Lesbos – auf jene Insel, auf der sich das damals größte Fluchtlager des Kontinents befand: Moria. Schon bald stellte sie fest, dass Menschenrechtsverletzungen an den Rändern Europas zum Alltag gehören.     Abstract: Barry Buzan proposes a new approach to making International Relations a truly global discipline that transcends both Eurocentrism and comparative civilisations. He narrates the story of humankind as a whole across three eras, using its material conditions and social structures to show how global society has evolved. Deploying the English School's idea of primary institutions and setting their story across three domains - interpolity, transnational and interhuman - this book conveys a living historical sense of the human story whilst avoiding the overabstraction of many social science grand theories. Buzan sharpens the familiar story of three main eras in human history with the novel idea that these eras are separated by turbulent periods of transition. This device enables a radical retelling of how modernity emerged from the late 18th century. He shows how the concept of 'global society' can build bridges connecting International Relations, Global Historical Sociology and Global/World History.

    Abstract: Since 1994, as the ruling party in South Africa, the ANC have become synonymous with and indivisible from the fight against apartheid rule. This has left little space for competing accounts, visions, and political projects to find their appropriate place in the historical narrative. In this innovative book, Toivo Asheeke moves beyond these well-trodden histories, to tell the previously neglected story of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM), a militant revolutionary nationalist wing of the anti-colonial struggle. Using archival sources from four countries and interviews with former veterans of the movement, Asheeke explores the BCM's engagement with guerrilla warfare, community feminism and Black Internationalism.     Abstract: In recent years, Bengali Muslims in India have faced harassment and scapegoating as the trope of the illegal Bangladeshi has gained political currency. India's Bangladesh Problem explores the experience of Bengali Muslims on the Indian side of the India-Bangladesh border in the context of neoliberal policies, unequal bilateral relations, labor migration, contested citizenship, and increasingly xenophobic government rhetoric. Drawing on extensive research in the borderlands and hinterlands of both countries, Navine Murshid argues that ever-deepening neoliberal policies across the border have shaped how certain ethnic groups are valued and have reconfigured social hierarchies. She provides new insights into the strategic inclusion, exclusion, and invisibility that characterizes Bengali Muslims' lives, rendering them a group susceptible to manipulation by virtue of their ethnic kinship to the majority of Bangladeshis. In turn, Bengali Muslims simultaneously resist and utilize received neoliberal ideas to sustain their lives and livelihoods at a time when neoliberal development has largely bypassed them

Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Jahrhundert, zum Kommunikationsverhalten von Nutzer:innen in den Sozialen Medien oder den widersprüchlichen Aspekten der Quantentheorie. Der Begriff Widerspruch kann sowohl eine private Unmutsäußerung als auch den rechtlich verankerten Einspruch bezeichnen, aber auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene werden solche Konflikte und Aushandlungsprozesse in Protesten sichtbar, wie jüngst den Anti-Corona-Demonstrationen, oder in Petitionen und Online-Kampagnen, wie #metoo oder #blacklivesmatter. Widersprüche sind feste Bestandteile gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die Autor:innen zeigen die vielen Facetten des Begriffs auf und beleuchten diese hinsichtlich ihrer Potenziale, medialen Ausprägungen und Wirkungsformen.

    Abstract: Ansprüche auf Bürgerschaft steigen unter Bewohner:innen informeller Siedlungen Nairobis. Basierend auf Umfragedaten sowie Fokusgruppendiskussionen wird in diesem Buch gezeigt, dass Erwartungen auf den Zugang zu urbaner Bürgerschaft trotz der wiederholt erfahrenen Frustration eben dieser Erwartungen steigen, obwohl soziales Vertrauen in informellen Siedlungen gering bleibt und obwohl unter Bewohner:innen informeller Siedlungen meist keine starke Bindung an die Stadt empfunden wird. Es kann damit erstmals gezeigt werden, dass unter Menschen in Kenias urbaner Informalität nicht nur Erwartungen, sondern Ansprüche auf Zugang zu Bürgerschaft zunehmen. Urbane Informalität in Kenia prägt damit Bürgerschaft auf spezifische Art und Weise.
    Abstract: Access to the social and political means of citizenship is a distinct expectation of those living and working in Nairobi’s urban informality. In an empirical analysis based on original survey data comparing rural and urban Kenya and focus-group discussions in informal settlements of Nairobi, this book shows that expectations of accessing public goods were high when people first arrived in the city and rose over time among dwellers in Nairobi’s urban informality, despite previous repeated frustrations of such expectations as well as strong attachments to rural areas. The book demonstrates that urban informality distinctly shapes citizenship.

    Abstract: »Bürgerliche Kälte« bezeichnet eine Gefühlslage der Gegenwart, mit der sich Bürger:innen vor der Gewalt schützen, die sie selbst verursachen. Den Kolonialismus und die Philosophie der Aufklärung im Blick, legt Henrike Kohpeiß dar, wie sich rassistische Gefühlsstrukturen ausbilden. Dafür treten die klassischen, kritischen Texte von Adorno und Horkheimer in einen Dialog mit dem Feld der Black Studies und Denker:innen wie Saidiya Hartman, Fred Moten und Denise Ferreira da Silva. Diese beiden intellektuellen Traditionen verbindet die radikale Kritik an der kapitalistischen und kolonialen Einrichtung der Welt. Die Gewaltgeschichte des europäischen Kolonialismus wird so als Affekttheorie bürgerlicher Subjektivität gelesen, ihr wird jeder Anschein von Unschuld genommen.

    Abstract: "Radical Politics argues for the renewal of a politics of self-emancipation. The last 20 years has witnessed a proliferation of radical social and political movements around the world, in wave after wave of struggles against intersecting forms of exploitation, domination and subalternization. From the Alternative Globalization Movement, anti-war protests, and Occupy, to the International Women's Strike, BlackLivesMatter, and direct action against the climate emergency, a series of common questions have continually re-emerged as practical challenges. How should radical political movements relate to the state? What makes emancipatory politics fundamentally different from both technocratic and populist models of 'politics as usual'? Are there distinctive ways of doing politics that can help to increase the capacity for self-emancipation? Which forms of organization are most likely to deepen and extend the dynamics that led to the emergence of these movements of resistance and rebellion in the first place? Radical Politics argues that our responses to these recurrent questions should be considered in terms of a theory of the 'causes' of contemporary emancipation, or an investigation into the goal, nature, method and organizational forms of radical political engagement against the neoliberal consensus. It also proposes a dialogue with Antonio Gramsci's political theory, reading a classic thinker of the contradictions of political modernity in new ways in the light of the concerns of the present, while also rethinking the central problems, concepts and structures of feeling of contemporary emancipatory movements in relation to Gramsci's distinctive notion of hegemony as a strategic method of self-emancipation"--

    Abstract: Armin Nassehi erklärt in seinem neuen Buch die zentralen gesellschaftlichen Grundbegriffe der Gegenwart. Was bedeutet es, wenn wir von Demokratie, Freiheit, Gleichheit/ Ungleichheit, Identität, Krise und Fremdheit sprechen? Diese Begriffe haben allesamt auch eine Herkunft im akademischen Kontext, haben in öffentlichen Debatten aber mit ihrem praktischen Gebrauch längst ein Eigenleben entwickelt. Von dort wirken sie übrigens auf den akademischen Begriffsgebrauch zurück. Nassehi bringt nun Ordnung in den Diskurs - nicht indem er eine «richtige» Begriffsbedeutung festlegen will, sondern indem er darüber aufklärt, welche offensichtlichen, aber auch welche versteckten Funktionen der Gebrauch dieser Grundbegriffe erfüllt. Er ist sich freilich dessen gewiss, dass, wie Niklas Luhmann einmal bemerkte, die Soziologie «neue Selbstbeschreibungen der Gesellschaft allenfalls anbrüten, nicht aber durchsetzen» kann. Armin Nassehis Sammlung gesellschaftlicher Grundbegriffe ist keine oberlehrerhafte Aufforderung zum richtigen Sprechen. Vielmehr werden die Begriffe methodisch danach abgeklopft, welche Funktion sie in Debatten haben. Die Grundfrage ist stets, für welches Problem solche Begriffe und ihr Gebrauch die Lösung sind. Gesellschaftliche Grundbegriffe wie Demokratie, Freiheit, Gleichheit/Ungleichheit, Identität, Krise und Fremdheit haben nicht nur eine lexikalische Bedeutung, die man historisch herleiten kann, sondern eben auch eine praktische Bedeutung durch ihren Gebrauch in Debatten. Wer erkennt, welche Funktion manche Begriffe haben, was sie zeigen und was sie verbergen, hat womöglich das Rüstzeug, öffentliche Debatten besser zu verstehen. Dabei richtet sich der Fokus in Nassehis Buch nicht nur auf den öffentlichen Gebrauch jener begrifflichen Vernunft, sondern auch auf die soziale Herkunft der Begriffe aus den Sozialwissenschaften - und auf die Art und Weise, wie sie vom öffentlichen Diskurs auf jene Wissenschaft zurückwirken.

    Abstract: Working-class Britons played a crucial role in the pioneering settlement and integration of South Asians in imperial Britain. Using a host of new and neglected sources, Imperial Heartland revises the history of early South Asian immigration to Britain, focusing on the northern English city of Sheffield. Rather than viewing immigration through the lens of inevitable conflict, this study takes an alternative approach, situating mixed marriages and inter-racial social networks centrally within the South Asian settlement of modern Britain. Whilst acknowledging the episodic racial conflict of the early inter-war period, David Holland challenges assumptions that insurmountable barriers of race, religion and culture existed between the British working classes and non-white newcomers. Imperial Heartland closely examines the reactions of working-class natives to these young South Asian men and overturns our pre-conceptions that hostility to perceived racial or national difference was an overriding pre-occupation of working-class people during this period. Imperial Heartland therefore offers a fresh and inspiring new perspective on the social and cultural history of modern Britain.

    Abstract: In Infertile Environments, Janelle Lamoreaux investigates how epigenetic research into the effects of toxic exposure conceptualizes and configures environments. Drawing on fieldwork in a Nanjing, China, toxicology lab that studies the influence of pesticides and other pollutants on male reproductive and developmental health, Lamoreaux shows how the lab's everyday research practices bring national, hormonal, dietary, maternal, and laboratory environments into being. She situates the lab's work within broader Chinese history as well as the contemporary cultural and political moment, in which declining fertility rates and reproductive governance and technology are growing concerns. She also points to how toxicology in China is a transnational endeavor tied to both local conditions and international research agendas and infrastructures, which highlights the myriad scales and scope of epigenetic environments. At a moment of growing concerns about toxins, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and climate change, Lamoreaux demonstrates that epigenetic research's proliferation of environments produces new kinds of toxic relations that impact multiple generations of humans.

    Abstract: In 2015, Germany agreed to accept a million Syrian refugees. The country had become an epicenter of global migration and one of Europe's most diverse countries. But was this influx of migration new to Germany? In this volume, Jan Plamper charts the groups and waves of post-1945 mobility to Germany. This is a narrative history of multicultural Germany told through life-stories. It explores the experiences of the 12.5 million German expellees from Eastern Europe who arrived at the end of the Second World War; the 14 million 'guest workers' from Italy and Turkey who turned West Germany into an economic powerhouse; the GDR's Vietnamese labor migrants; and the 2.3 million Germans and 230,000 Jews who came from the Soviet Union after 1987.
