Abstract: Am 17.

Abstract: As a result of demographic change, Germany will become increasingly dependent on immigration to secure its pool of skilled labour and stabilise its economic performance. Immigrants are already making an important contribution in this respect. In 2019, for example, almost every sixth person in skilled employment had not been born on German soil and one in twenty had entered the country since 2007. Taking only university graduates between the ages of 25 and 34, the share of immigrants rises to approximately a quarter and of those who have moved to Germany since 2007 to around a fifth. The figures show that non-natives are also making a growing contribution to innovation and entrepreneurship in this country. Despite this, the overall immigrant population is still disproportionately low-skilled and either employed in menial positions or not active in the labour market at all. Immigration policy must therefore continue to be selective and specifically target potential employees and trainees from non-EU countries who either already possess the specialist qualifications needed in Germany or can rapidly acquire them.

Abstract: "Generations of people have been taught that population growth makes resources scarcer. In 2021, for example, one widely publicized report argued that "The world's rapidly growing population is consuming the planet's natural resources at an alarming rate . . . the world currently needs 1.6 Earths to satisfy the demand for natural resources ... a figure that could rise to 2 planets by 2030." But is that true? After analyzing the prices of hundreds of commodities, goods, and services spanning two centuries, Marian Tupy and Gale Pooley found that resources became more abundant as the population grew. That was especially true when they looked at "time prices," which represent the length of time that people must work to buy something. To their surprise, the authors also found that resource abundance increased faster than the population, a relationship that they call superabundance. On average, every additional human being created more value than he or she consumed. This relationship between population growth and abundance is deeply counterintuitive, yet it is true. Why? More people produce more ideas, which lead to more inventions. People then test those inventions in the marketplace to separate the useful from the useless. At the end of that process of discovery, people are left with innovations that overcome shortages, spur economic growth, and raise standards of living. But large populations are not enough to sustain superabundance; just think of the poverty in China and India before their respective economic reforms. To innovate, people must be allowed to think, speak, publish, associate, and disagree. They must be allowed to save, invest, trade, and profit. In a word, they must be free."

Abstract: Social mobility is the hope of economic development and the mantra of a good society. There are disagreements about what constitutes social mobility, but there is broad agreement that people should have roughly equal chances of success regardless of their economic status at birth. Concerns about rising inequality have engendered a renewed interest in social mobility - especially in the developing world. However, efforts to construct the databases and meet the standards required for conventional analyses of social mobility are at a preliminary stage and need to be complemented by innovative, conceptual, and methodological advances. If forms of mobility have slowed in the West, then we might be entering an age of rigid stratification with defined boundaries between the always-haves and the never-haves - which does not augur well for social stability.

Abstract: "The Global South is relatively neglected in research about our "compartmentalised world". The volume of publications on inequality has increased five-fold since 1992, but many of these focus on the top one per cent of households located in the Global North (International Social Science Council 2016) much like Thomas Piketty's work (e.g., Piketty, 2014) and others published in leading journals such asSocial Forces (see, for example, Kwon 2016). Yet, both spatial and social inequalities are widespread and increasing within and between groups in Africa and between Africa and the rest of the world (Obeng-Odoom, 2013b, 2014a). So, in this book my focus is on stratification in the "Global South" or what Frantz Fanon (1961) called "the wretched of the earth", their experiences of appalling economic inequalities, the dire implications for society, economy and environment, why this compartmentalization continues to deepen, and what can be done about it. Analytically, the focus on stratification provides a more comprehensive approach to studying the "Global South" because the question of stratification leads to additional questions about inquality in relation to whom, what, where, why and how and, hence, throws the searchlight on the bigger question of "economic backwardness" in the Global South"--

Abstract: Over the next generation, Sub-Saharan Africa faces three big, inter-related challenges. Its population will double to 2 billion by 2045. By then, more than half of Africans will be living in cities. And this group of mostly young people will be connected with each other and the world through mobile devices. Properly planned for and harnessed, this situation is a tremendously positive force for change. But without economic growth and jobs, it could prove a political and social catastrophe. With these population increases, old systems of patronage and of muddling through will no longer work. Instead, if leaders want to remain in power, they will have to find a more dynamic means of promoting growth. A first-hand account of a rapidly changing region, Making Africa Work is a handbook for ensuring growth beyond commodities and creating jobs across the continent. --

Abstract: Europe is stumbling from crisis to crisis. The financial and debt crises are endangering the European currency union; referenda in several EU countries show widespread Euroscepticism; the economy is only slowly regaining momentum; unemployment remains high in many Member States; and the refugee crisis has deepened political divisions. We need an answer to the question of how to rescue the Euro and keep Europe together. In this volume, renowned German researchers and leading practitioners provide pragmatic recommendations. Their plea for a democratically legitimized Euro Finance Minister, a new economic approach, a common Eurozone budget, and minimum social standards are the prerequisites for a fair, stable, and prosperous Europe.

Abstract: "Predictive analytics unleashes the power of data. With this technology, computers literally learn from data how to predict future behaviors of individuals. In this updated and revised edition of Predictive Analytics, former Columbia University professor and Predictive Analytics World founder Eric Siegel reveals the power and perils of prediction. New material includes: - The Real Reason the NSA Wants Your Data: Automatic Suspect Discovery. A special sidebar in Chapter 2, "With Power Comes Responsibility," presumes--with much evidence--that the National Security Agency considers PA a strategic priority. Can the organization use PA without endangering civil liberties? - Dozens of new examples from Facebook, Hopper, Shell, Uber, UPS, the U.S. government, and more. The Central Tables' compendium of mini-case studies has grown to 182 entries, including breaking examples. - A much needed warning regarding bad science. Chapter 3, "The Data Effect," includes an in-depth section about an all-too-common pitfall, and how we avoid it, i.e., how to successfully tap data's potential without being fooled by random noise, ensuring sound discoveries are made. - Even more extensive Notes, updated and expanded to 70+ pages, now moved to an online PDF. Now located at www.predictivenotes.com, the Notes include citations and comments that cover the above new content, as well as new citations for many other topics"--
Abstract: Machine generated contents note: Foreword Thomas H. Davenport; Preface to the Revised and Updated Edition What's new and who's this book for--the Predictive Analytics FAQ; Preface to the Original Edition, What is the occupational hazard of predictive analytics?; Introduction The Prediction Effect, How does predicting human behavior combat risk, fortify healthcare, toughen crime fighting, boost sales, and cut costs? Why must a computer learn in order to predict? How can lousy predictions be extremely valuable? What makes data exceptionally exciting? How is data science like porn? Why shouldn't computers be called computers? Why do organizations predict when you will die? Chapter 1: Liftoff! Prediction Takes Action (deployment). How much guts does it take to deploy a predictive model into field operation, and what do you stand to gain? What happens when a man invests his entire life savings into his own predictive stock market trading system? Chapter 2: With Power Comes Responsibility: Hewlett-Packard, Target, the Cops, and the NSA Deduce Your Secrets (ethics), How do we safely harness a predictive machine that can foresee job resignation, pregnancy, and crime? Are civil liberties at risk? Why does one leading health insurance company predict policyholder death? Two extended sidebars reveal: 1) Does the government undertake fraud detection more for its citizens or for self-preservation, and 2) for what compelling purpose does the NSA need your data even if you have no connection to crime whatsoever, and can the agency use machine learning supercomputers to fight terrorism without endangering human rights? Chapter 3: The Data E ffect: A Glut at the End of the Rainbow (data). We are up to our ears in data, but how much can this raw material really tell us? What actually makes it predictive? What are the most bizarre discoveries from data? When we find an interesting insight, why are we often better off not asking why? In what way is bigger data more dangerous? How do we avoid being fooled by random noise and ensure scientific discoveries are trustworthy? Chapter 4: The Machine That Learns: A Look Inside Chase's Prediction of Mortgage Risk (modeling). What form of risk has the perfect disguise? How does prediction transform risk to opportunity? What should all businesses learn from insurance companies? Why does machine learning require art in addition to science? What kind of predictive model can be understood by everyone? How can we confidently trust a machine's predictions? Why couldn't prediction prevent the global financial crisis? Chapter 5: The Ensemble Effect: Netflix, Crowdsourcing, and Supercharging Prediction (ensembles). To crowdsource predictive analytics - outsource it to the public at large - a company launches its strategy, data, and research discoveries into the public spotlight. How can this possibly help the company compete? What key innovation in predictive analytics has crowdsourcing helped develop? Must supercharging predictive precision involve overwhelming complexity, or is there an elegant solution? Is there wisdom in nonhuman crowds? Chapter 6: Watson and the Jeopardy! Challenge (question answering). How does Watson - IBM's Jeopardy!-playing computer - work? Why does it need predictive modeling in order to answer questions, and what secret sauce empowers its high performance? How does the iPhone's Siri compare? Why is human language such a challenge for computers? Is artificial intelligence possible? Chapter 7: Persuasion by the Numbers: How Telenor, U.S. Bank, and the Obama Campaign Engineered Influence (uplift). What is the scientific key to persuasion? Why does some marketing fiercely backfire? Why is human behavior the wrong thing to predict? What should all businesses learn about persuasion from presidential campaigns? What voter predictions helped Obama win in 2012 more than the detection of swing voters? How could doctors kill fewer patients inadvertently? How is a person like a quantum particle? Riddle: What often happens to you that cannot be perceived, and that you can't even be sure has happened afterward - but that can be predicted in advance? Afterword: Eleven Predictions for the First Hour of 2022. Appendices A: The Five Effects of Prediction. B: Twenty Applications of Predictive Analytics. C: Prediction People - Cast of "Characters". Abstract: "Xinjiang is the 'pivot of Asia,' where the frontiers of China, Tibet, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia approach each other. The growing Uyghur demand for a separate homeland and continuing violence in Xinjiang have brought this region into the focus of national and international attention. With Xinjiang becoming the hub of trans-Asian trade and traffic, and also due to its rich energy resources, Uyghur Muslims of Xinjiang are poised to assert their ethno-political position, thereby posing serious challenge to China's authority in the region. This book offers a new perspective on the region, with a focus on social, economic and political developments in Xinjiang in modern and contemporary times. Drawing on detailed analyses by experts on Xinjiang from India, Central Asia, Russia, Taiwan and China, this book presents a coherent, concise and rich analysis of ethnic relations, Uyghur resistance, China's policy in Xinjiang and its economic relations with its Central Asian neighbours. It is of interest to those studying in Chinese and Central Asian politics and society, International Relations and Security Studies"...Provided by publisher

Abstract: Endless terror. Refugee waves. An unfixable global economy. Surprising election results. New billion-dollar fortunes. Miracle medical advances. What if they were all connected? What if you could understand why? The Seventh Sense examines the historic force now shaking our world ... and explains how our leaders, our businesses, and each of us can master it. All around us now we are surrounded by events that are difficult to understand. But every day, new figures and forces emerge that seem to have mastered this tumultuous age. Sometimes these are the leaders of the most earthshaking companies of our time, accumulating billion-dollar fortunes. Or they are successful investors or our best generals. Other times, however, quick success is going to terrorists, rebels, and figures intent on chaos. The Seventh Sense is the story of what all of today's successful figures see and feel ... forces that are invisible to most of us but explain everything from explosive technological change to uneasy political ripples. The secret to power now is understanding our new age of networks ... not merely the Internet but also networks of trade and DNA and finance. Based on his years of advising generals, CEOs, and politicians, Ramo takes us into the opaque heart of our world's rapidly connected systems and teaches us what the victors of this age know ... and what the losers are not yet seeing

Abstract: "As one of the originators of the concept of bioregionalism, Peter Berg (1937-2011) is a founding figure of contemporary environmental thought. As arguably the nation's first post-environmentalist, in the 1970s Berg perceived the negative direction the environmental movement was taking and began to articulate a more positive and pro-active alternative, centred on the concept of bioregions. This book introduces readers to the biospheric vision and post-environmental genius of Berg, with original tributes from sixteen prominent writers and thinkers, whose reflections illuminate facets of Berg's continuing importance and offer fresh angles on bioregionalism"--
Abstract: "Bioregionalism asks us to reimagine ourselves and the places where we live in ecological terms and to harmonize human activities with the natural systems that sustain life. As one of the originators of the concept of bioregionalism, Peter Berg (1937-2011) is a founding figure of contemporary environmental thought. The Biosphere and the Bioregion: Essential Writings of Peter Berg introduces readers to the biospheric vision and post-environmental genius of Berg. From books and essays to published interviews, this selection of writings represents Berg's bioregional vision and its global, local, urban, and rural applications. The Biosphere and the Bioregion provides a highly accessible introduction to bioregional philosophy, making Berg's paradigm available as a guiding vision and practical "greenprint" for the twenty-first century. This valuable compilation lays the groundwork for future research by offering the first-ever comprehensive bibliography of Berg's publications and should be of interest to students and scholars in the inter-disciplinary fields of environmental humanities, environment and sustainability studies, as well as political ecology, environmental sociology and anthropology"--

Abstract: "From one of the world's most highly regarded social scientists, a transformative book on the habits of mind that lead to the best predictions Everyone would benefit from seeing further into the future, whether buying stocks, crafting policy, launching a new product, or simply planning the week's meals. Unfortunately, people tend to be terrible forecasters. As Wharton professor Philip Tetlock showed in a landmark 2005 study, even experts' predictions are only slightly better than chance. However, an important and underreported conclusion of that study was that some experts do have real foresight, and Tetlock has spent the past decade trying to figure out why. What makes some people so good? And can this talent be taught? In Superforecasting, Tetlock and coauthor Dan Gardner offer a masterwork on prediction, drawing on decades of research and the results of a massive, government-funded forecasting tournament. The Good Judgment Project involves tens of thousands of ordinary people--including a Brooklyn filmmaker, a retired pipe installer, and a former ballroom dancer--who set out to forecast global events. Some of the volunteers have turned out to be astonishingly good. They've beaten other benchmarks, competitors, and prediction markets. They've even beaten the collective judgment of intelligence analysts with access to classified information. They are "superforecasters." In this groundbreaking and accessible book, Tetlock and Gardner show us how we can learn from this elite group. Weaving together stories of forecasting successes (the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound) and failures (the Bay of Pigs) and interviews with a range of high-level decision makers, from David Petraeus to Robert Rubin, they show that good forecasting doesn't require powerful computers or arcane methods. It involves gathering evidence from a variety of sources, thinking probabilistically, working in teams, keeping score, and being willing to admit error and change course. Superforecasting offers the first demonstrably effective way to improve our ability to predict the future--whether in business, finance, politics, international affairs, or daily life--and is destined to become a modern classic"--

Abstract: This book presents new research on the capacity of big cities to generate new tourism areas as visitors discover and help create new urban experiences off the beaten track. It examines similarities and differences in these processes in a group of established world cities located in the global circuits of tourism. The cities featured are Berlin, New York, London, Paris, and Sydney. In these cities experienced city visitors are contributing to the 'discovery' of new places to visit. Many neighbourhoods close to the historic centre and to traditional attractions offer the mix of cultural differen

Der Bestsellerautor Harald Welzer (u. a. Selbst denken.

Abstract: Why are some nations rich and others poor? Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of the right policies? Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Based on fifteen years of original research, Acemoglu and Robinson marshall historical evidence from the Roman Empire to the Soviet Union, from Korea to Africa, to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today, including: China has built an authoritarian growth machine. Will it continue to grow at such high speed and overwhelm the West? Is America moving from a virtuous circle, in which efforts by elites to aggrandize power are resisted, to a vicious one that enriches and empowers a small minority? What is the most effective way to help move billions of people from the rut of poverty to prosperity? This book will change the way you look at--and understand--the world.--From American publisher description

Abstract: Preface: Why Egyptians filled Tahrir Square to bring down Hosni Mubarak and what it means for our understanding of the causes of prosperity and poverty -- So close and yet so different : Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, have the same people, culture, and geography. Why is one rich and one poor? -- Theories that don't work : poor countries are poor not because of their geographies or cultures, or because their leaders do not know which policies will enrich their citizens -- The making of prosperity and poverty : how prosperity and poverty are determined by the incentives created by institutions, and how politics determines what institutions a nation has -- Small differences and critical junctures: the weight of history : how institutions change through political conflict and how the past shapes the present -- "I've seen the future, and it works" : growth under extractive institutions : what Stalin, King Shyaam, the Neolithic Revolution, and the Maya city-states all had in common and how this explains why China's current economic growth cannot last -- Drifting apart : how institutions evolve over time, often slowly drifting apart -- The turning point : how a political revolution in 1688 changed institutions in England and led to the Industrial Revolution -- Not on our turf : barriers to development : why the politically powerful in many nations opposed the Industrial Revolution -- Reversing development : how European colonialism impoverished large parts of the world -- The diffusion of prosperity : how some parts of the world took different paths to prosperity from that of Britain -- The virtuous circle : how institutions that encourage prosperity create positive feedback loops that prevent the efforts by elites to undermine them -- The vicious circle : how institutions that create poverty generate negative feedback loops and endure -- Why nations fail today : institutions, institutions, institutions -- Breaking the mold : how a few countries changed their economic trajectory by changing their institutions -- Understanding prosperity and poverty : how the world could have been different and how understanding this can explain why most attempts to combat poverty have failed
