    Abstract: Städtische Verwaltungen und Regierungen sind zunehmend besessen vom "Image" ihrer Stadt und stürzen sich in einen Vermarktungswettbewerb, der auf Tourismus, Investoren und Immobilienmärkte ausgerichtet ist. Die Menschen, die in der Stadt leben, werden dabei zum Ziel architektonischer Verdrängungsmaßnahmen. Mickaël Labbé zeigt, wie ganze Bevölkerungsteile durch eine kaum wahrnehmbare Architektur der Verachtung als unerwünscht ausgeschlossen werden. Überwachungskameras, Bänke mit geneigter Sitzfläche oder trennenden Armlehnen, auf denen man nicht schlafen kann, und andere subtile Maßnahmen erschweren insbesondere sozial marginalisierten Menschen wie Obdachlosen das Leben in der Stadt.Gegen diese Tendenz führt Labbé die Notwendigkeit ins Feld, eine Stadt neu zu erfinden, die sich an uns alle richtet. Anstelle von ausschließenden Mechanismen braucht es Räume, in denen wir unsere Verbindungen wieder enger knüpfen können. Denn eine Stadt, die nicht mehr auf ihre gemeinschaftliche Nutzung ausgerichtet ist, die nur aus homogenen Ghettos besteht, wo wir einander nicht mehr konfrontativ und in aller Unterschiedlichkeit begegnen können, ist ein Verlust für uns alle.Labbé beschreibt funktionierende Beispiele einer "Architektur der Anerkennung" und plädiert für eine Wiederaneignung des öffentlichen Raums

    Abstract: Water is a global resource for modern societies - and water was a global resource for pre-modern societies. The many different water systems serving processes of urbanisation and urban life in ancient times and the Middle Ages have hardly been researched until now. The numerous contributions to this volume pose questions such as what the basic cultural significance of water was, the power of water, in the town and for the town, from different points of view. Symbolic, aesthetic, and cult aspects are taken up, as is the role of water in politics, society, and economy, in daily life, but also in processes of urban planning or in urban neighbourhoods. Not least, the dangers of polluted water or of flooding presented a challenge to urban society. The contributions in this volume draw attention to the complex, manifold relations between water and human beings. This collection presents the results of an international conference in Kiel in 2018. It is directed towards both scholars in ancient and mediaeval studies and all those interested in the diversity of water systems in urban space in ancient and mediaeval times.     
    Abstract: Wasser ist eine globale Ressource für heutige Gesellschaften – Wasser war eine globale Ressource vormoderner Gesellschaften. Die manigfaltigen unterschiedlicher Wassersysteme für Prozesse der Urbanisierung und das urbane Leben in der Antike und dem Mittelalter ist bislang kaum erforscht. Die zahlreichen Beiträge dieses Bandes fragen nach der grundlegenden kulturellen Bedeutung von Wasser ( bzw. power of water) in der Stadt und Wasser für die Stadt aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Symbolische, ästhetische oder kultische Aspekte werden ebenso thematisiert wie die Rolle von Wasser in Politik, Gesellschaft oder Wirtschaft und dem alltäglichen Handeln, aber auch in Stadtplanungsprozessen oder städtischen Teilräumen. Nicht zuletzt stellen die Gefahren von verschmutzten Wasser oder Überschwemmungen die städtische Gesellschaft vor Herausforderungen. Die Beiträge diesen Band lenken den Blick auf die komplexen und vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Wasser und Menschen.     Abstract: In Reattachment Theory Lee Wallace argues that homosexuality-far from being the threat to "traditional" marriage that same-sex marriage opponents have asserted-is so integral to its reimagining that all marriage is gay marriage. Drawing on the history of marriage, Stanley Cavell's analysis of Hollywood comedies of remarriage, and readings of recent gay and lesbian films, Wallace shows that queer experiments in domesticity have reshaped the affective and erotic horizons of heterosexual marriage and its defining principles: fidelity, exclusivity, and endurance. Wallace analyzes a series of films-Dorothy Arzner's Craig's Wife (1936); Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009); Lisa Cholodenko's High Art (1998), Laurel Canyon (2002), and The Kids Are All Right (2010); and Andrew Haigh's Weekend (2011) and 45 Years (2015)-that, she contends, do not simply reflect social and legal changes; they fundamentally alter our sense of what sexual attachment involves as both a social and a romantic form

Dieses Buch widmet sich der vergleichenden Betrachtung der damaligen und aktuellen Theorien über die Aneignung von urbanen Freiräumen in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen.

    Abstract: "The Making of English Popular Culture provides an account of the making of popular culture in the nineteenth century. While a form of what we might describe as popular culture existed before this period, John Storey has assembled a collection that demonstrates how what we now think of as popular culture first emerged as a result of the enormous changes that accompanied the industrial revolution. Particularly significant are the technological changes that made the production of new forms of culture possible and the concentration of people in urban areas that created significant audiences for this new culture. Consisting of fourteen original chapters that cover diverse topics ranging from seaside holidays and the invention of Christmas tradition, to advertising, music and popular fiction, the collection aims to enhance our understanding of the relationship between culture and power, as explored through areas such as 'race', ethnicity, class, sexuality and gender. It also aims to encourage within cultural studies a renewed historical sense when engaging critically with popular culture by exploring the historical conditions surrounding the existence of popular texts and practices. Going beyond extant biographical studies of individual exemplars, or cursory attention to either 'spirituality' or jazz in the civil rights movement, the book argues for the centrality of religious experiences to any legitimate understanding of jazz, while also suggesting that attention to jazz opens up new interpretations of American religious history.

    Abstract: The sectional conflict over slavery in the United States was not only a clash between labour systems and political ideologies but also a viscerally felt part of the lives of antebellum Americans. This book contributes to the growing field of emotions history by exploring how specific emotions shaped Americans' perceptions of, and responses to, the sectional conflict in order to explain why it culminated in disunion and war. Emotions from indignation to jealousy were inextricably embedded in antebellum understandings of morality, citizenship, and political affiliation. Their arousal in the context of political debates encouraged Northerners and Southerners alike to identify with antagonistic sectional communities and to view the conflicts between them as worth fighting over. Michael E. Woods synthesizes two schools of thought on Civil War causation: the fundamentalist, which foregrounds deep-rooted economic, cultural, and political conflict, and the revisionist, which stresses contingency, individual agency, and collective passion

Frithjof Benjamin Schenk ist Professor für Osteuropäische Geschichte an der Universität Basel. Nach dem Studium der Osteuropäischen Geschichte, Neueren und Neuesten Geschichte und Volkswirtschaftslehre in Marburg, Berlin (FU) und St. Petersburg arbeitete er als wissenschaftlicher Assistent und Dilthey-Fellow der Volkswagenstiftung an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten zählen die Geschichte von Erinnerung und Konzepten kollektiver Identität in Russland und Ostmitteleuropa, kognitive Karten (Mental Maps), Mobilitäts- und Raumgeschichte, vergleichende Imperiengeschichte, Autobiografik sowie die Geschichte politischer Gewalt.

Seit 2008 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Arbeitsbereich Geschlechtergeschichte an der Universität Bielefeld sowie seit 2010 zudem Geschäftsführerin der Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology. 2003 bis 2007 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Arbeitsbereich Wissenschaftsgeschichte an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.     Abstract: The cultural, political, social and economic interaction between Ireland and Poland has a long and complex history. This volume hopes to contribute to an emerging debate around the issues concerned by looking at alternative frameworks for understanding the relationship between the two countries. While the topic has attracted growing interest among researchers from various disciplines in recent years, this is the first book dedicated to exploring this cultural relationship in the context of Polish migration to Ireland. The formation and operation of systems of power and patronage in Anglo-Saxon England are currently the focus of concerted scholarly attention. This book explores how power is shaped and negotiated in later Anglo-Saxon texts, focusing in particular on how hierarchical, vertical structures are presented alongside patterns of reciprocity and economies of mutual obligation, especially within the context of patronage relationships (whether secular, spiritual, literal or symbolic). Through close analysis of a wide selection of sources in the vernacular and Latin (including the Guthlac poems of the Exeter Book, Old English verse epitaphs, the acrostic poetry of Abbo of Fleury, the Encomium Emmae Reginae and Libellus Æthelwoldi Episcopi), the study examines how texts sustain dual ways of seeing and understanding power, generating a range of imaginative possibilities along with tensions, ambiguities and instances of disguise or euphemism.     Abstract: Um das westliche Bündnis im Ost-West-Konflikt nach innen zu stabilisieren, setzten die USA auf auswärtige Kultur- und Informationspolitik. In der Bundesrepublik wandten sich etwa 20 Amerikahäuser und Deutsch-Amerikanische Institute an die westdeutsche Bevölkerung, um Sympathien für die Politik und die Werte der USA zu erzeugen. Sie waren jedoch nicht nur Mittler im amerikanischen Auftrag, sondern durch vielfältige Beziehungen fest in der westdeutschen Kulturlandschaft verankert. In der Öffentlichkeit standen sie als symbolische Orte für "Amerika" – im positiven wie im negativen Sinne. Reinhild Kreis analysiert die Strukturen, Zielvorgaben und das Instrumentarium der amerikanischen Kultur- und Informationspolitik in der Bundesrepublik, Themenkarrieren und -konjunkturen sowie die Amerikahäuser und DAI in ihren lokalen Beziehungsgefügen. An der Schnittstelle von USA und Bundesrepublik, Außen- und Kulturpolitik, Regierung und Öffentlichkeit zeigt die Untersuchung der Amerikahäuser und Deutsch-Amerikanischen Institute die Gestaltung, Dynamiken und Spannungen der transatlantischen Beziehungen seit den 1960er Jahren unterhalb der diplomatischen Ebene.

    Abstract: Jede Stadt ist anders. Das liegt nicht nur an charakteristischen Bauweisen oder einmaligen Sehenswürdigkeiten.     Abstract: While cultural diversity and hybridity have often been celebrated, they also challenge traditional concepts of national and cultural identity – challenges which have caused considerable anxiety. Various disciplines have often investigated the impact of cultural hybridity, multiculture, and (post)colonialism in relative isolation and with a tendency towards over-theorization and loss of specificity. Greater interdisciplinary cooperation can counter this tendency and encourage sustained comparisons between different former empires and across language boundaries. This volume contributes to such developments by combining contributions from history, English and German studies, cultural geography, theatre studies, and film studies; by covering both the colonial and the postcolonial period; and by looking comparatively at two different (post)colonial contexts: the United Kingdom and Germany. The result is productive dialogue across the distinct colonial and migration histories of the UK and Germany, which brings out divergent concepts of cultural difference – but, importantly, without neglecting similarities and transnational developments. The interdisciplinary outlook extends beyond political definitions of identity and difference to include consumer culture, literature, film, and journalism – cultural and social practices that construct, represent, and reflect personal and collective identities. Section I discusses the historical and contemporary role of colonial experience and its remembrance in the construction of national identities. Section II follows on by tracing the reflections of (post)coloniality and twentieth-century migration in the specific fields of economic history and consumer culture.     Abstract: Diese Publikation ist der abschließende Bericht des von Januar 2009 bis Januar 2010 durchgeführten Forschungsprojekts Stadtentwicklung, Zivilgesellschaft und bürgerschaftliches Engagement des Maecenata Instituts für Philanthropie und Zivilgesellschaft an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und dem Fachgebiet Planungstheorie am Institut für Stadt- und Regionalplanung der Technischen Universität Berlin. Das Projekt wurde im Rahmen des Programms Nationale Stadtentwicklungspolitik durch das Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Bau und Stadtentwicklung (BMVBS), vertreten durch das Bundesinstitut für Bau-, Stadt- und Raumforschung (BBSR) im Bundesamt für Bauwesen und Raumordnung (BBR), gefördert.Was verstehen Politiker, Verwaltungsmitarbeiter und Raumplaner eigentlich unter einer verstärkten Einbindung der Zivilgesellschaft in die Stadtentwicklung, wie sie von vielen Seiten gefordert wird? Welche Rolle soll Zivilgesellschaft in der Stadtentwicklung spielen und welche Rolle schreiben sich die Bürgerinnen und Bürger selbst zu? Wo liegen die Schnittstellen zwischen planerischer Beteiligung und selbstermächtigtem Engagement? Inwiefern trägt bürgerschaftliches Engagement zur Stadtentwicklung bei, wie kann es gefördert werden und wo liegen die Grenzen? Und gibt es diesbezüglich Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen räumlichen Arenen?〈br/〉〈br/〉Diesen Fragen ist das Projekt Stadtentwicklung, Zivilgesellschaft und bürgerschaftliches Engagement von Januar 2009 bis Januar 2010 nachgegangen. 35 Personen aus der Praxis wurden zu ihren Erfahrungen in den räumlichen Arenen ländlicher Raum, Quartier, Stadt, strukturschwacher Raum und Metropolregion befragt und werden in einem virtuellen Dialog gegenübergestellt.     Abstract: How can we get inside popular collective struggles and explain how they work? Contentious Performances presents a distinctive approach to analyzing such struggles, drawing especially on incomparably rich evidence from Great Britain between 1758 and 1834. The book accomplishes three main things. First, it presents a logic and method for describing contentious events, occasions on which people publicly make consequential claims on each other. Second, it shows how that logic yields superior explanations of the dynamics in such events, both individually and in the aggregate. Third, it illustrates its methods and arguments by means of detailed analyses of contentious events in Great Britain from 1758 to 1834

Culturepreneurs, d.h. kulturelle Unternehmer insbesondere im Design-Segment, sind dabei für die Produktion von sozialen, professionellen und urbanen Räumen verantwortlich. An den Orten dieser professionellen Kreativszenen werden Informationen, Wissen und Trends verhandelt. Als urbane Ethnographie erzählt diese empirische Studie eine Geschichte über Berlin als sozialem Ort, an dem sich Konturen zukünftiger Arbeitsprozesse im Urbanen zu erkennen geben.
