It examines the rise of the Australian megachurch Hillsong, its global spread, and its appeal to young middle-class Brazilians. It shows that Hillsong's adoption of the Cool Christianity style through music, digital media, branding, and celebrity culture, elicits excitement, pleasure, and pride amongst its expanding global following. For Brazilian middle-class youth, the church also gives them a sense of cosmopolitan belonging to a Christian community located in the Global North. By joining Hillsong, they seek to distinguish themselves from the impoverished followers of Brazilian Pentecostal churches and their values.

Abstract: During the 16 & 17th centuries, English numerical practices underwent a complex transformation with wide-ranging impacts on English society. At the beginning of the early modern period, English men & women believed that God had made humans universally numerate, although numbers were not central to their everyday lives. Over the next two centuries, rising literacy rates & the increasing availability of printed books revolutionized modes of arithmetical practice & education. Ordinary English people began to use numbers & quantification to explain abstract phenomena as diverse as the relativity of time, the probability of chance events, & the constitution of human populations. These changes reflected their participation in broader early modern European cultural & intellectual developments such as the Reformation & the Scientific Revolution.

From this follows so-called thrifty attitudes towards the passing of time, which is construed as a resource that can be 'wasted' or 'saved'. This title, however, presents comparative case studies of clock time in Fiji and Finland to reconsider the other values that it is capable of expressing, beyond monetary worth. Abstract: The dual traumas of colonialism and slavery are still felt by Native Americans and African Americans as victims of ongoing violence toward people of color today. In this book, John Corrigan calls attention to the trauma experienced by white Americans as perpetrators of this violence. By tracing memory's role in American Christianity, Corrigan shows how contemporary white Christian nationalism is motivated by a widespread effort to forget the role race plays in American society. White trauma, Corrigan argues, courses through American culture like an underground river that sometimes bursts forth into brutality, terrorism, and insurrection. Abstract: When Martin Luther King Jr. argued on behalf of civil rights he was told that he was 'too soon.' Today, those demanding reparations for slavery are told they are 'too late.' What time is it? Or perhaps the appropriate question is: whose time is it? These questions point to a phenomenon of segregated time: how certain political subjects are viewed as occupants of different time zones, how experiences of time diverge across peoples, and how these divergent temporal spheres entwine to serve white supremacy. While racial segregation and inequality are typically conceived in terms of space, 'Segregated Time' explores how they are also sustained through impositions on human time. In this study, P.J. Brendese takes a time-sensitive approach to race as it pertains to the acceleration of human disposability, dynamic identity formation, and the production and allocation of economic goods.

Abstract: The logic of scientific expertise cannot be properly understood without knowing the conceptual and institutional history of scientific prediction. Predictions of future population, economic growth, environmental change, and scientific and technological innovation have shaped much of twentieth and twenty-first-century politics and social life, as well as government policies. Today, such predictions are more necessary than ever as the world undergoes dramatic environmental, political, and technological change. But what does it mean to predict scientifically? What are the limits of scientific prediction and what are its effects on governance, institutions, and society? The author takes as her example twentieth-century USSR.
