    Abstract: This book presents the results of a two-year international research project conducted for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC) to investigate and provide solutions for reducing bribery and corruption in corporations and institutions. It starts with an empirical case study on the effectiveness of a set of self-regulation rules adopted by multinational companies in the energy sector. Second, it explores the context and factors leading to corruption internationally (and the relationships between domestic criminal law and self-regulation). Third, it examines guidelines for the adoption of compliance programs developed by international institutions, to serve as models for the future. The principle result of the book is a three-pronged Anti-Bribery Corruption Model (so called ABC Model), endorsed by the United Nations, intended as a corruption prevention tool intended to be adopted by private corporations. This work provides a common, research-based standard for anti-bribery compliance programs, with international applications. This work will be of interest to researchers studying Criminology and Criminal Justice, particularly in the areas of organized crime and corruption, as well as related areas like Business Ethics and Comparative International Law.

    Abstract: This book explains harmonisation techniques that can be used in survey research to align national systems of categories and definitions in such a way that comparison is possible across countries and cultures. It provides an introduction to instruments for collecting internationally comparable data of interest to survey researchers. It shows how seven key demographic and socio-economic variables can be harmonised and employed in European comparative surveys. The seven key variables discussed in detail are: education, occupation, income, activity status, private household, ethnicity, and family. These demographic and socio-economic variables are background variables that no survey can do without. They frequently have the greatest explanatory capacity to analyse social structures, and are a mirror image of the way societies are organised nationally. This becomes readily apparent when one attempts, for example, to compare national education systems. Moreover, a comparison of the national definitions of concepts such as "private household" reveals several different historically and culturally shaped underlying concepts. Indeed, some European countries do not even have a word for "private household". Hence such national definitions and categories cannot simply be translated from one culture to another. They must be harmonised.

    Abstract: This book focuses on a central concept that “Theory is History”, as the theory of capitalism can only be formulated on the basis of an analysis of its history. In contrast, bourgeois thinking replaces the analysis of historical capitalism with an abstract theory without any links to reality. “Economics”, which is the theory of an imaginary system, then becomes an apologia intended to give legitimacy to the behaviour of the owners of capital. The author pays special attention to the globalization of the law of value. The individual chapters illustrate the author’s thesis by focusing on the links between capital and land ownership, between modernity and religious interpretation, and on questions of the global expansion of capitalism, particularly the ways it has evolved in certain countries, in this case Russia and China.     Abstract: This two-volume project provides a multi-sectoral perspective over the EU's external projections from traditional as well as critical theoretical and institutional perspectives, and is supported by numerous case studies covering the whole extent of the EU’s external relations. The aim is to strive to present new approaches as well as detailed background studies in analyzing the EU as a global actor.Volume 1: The first volume “Theoretical and Institutional Approaches to the EU’s External Relations” addresses the EU's overall external post-Lisbon Treaty presence both globally and regionally (e.g. in its "neighborhood"), with a special emphasis on the EU’s institutional framework.     Abstract: In recent years states across the world have boosted their legal and institutional capacity to deport noncitizens residing on their territory, including failed asylum seekers, “illegal” migrants, and convicted criminals. Scholars have analyzed this development primarily through the lens of immigration control. Deportation has been viewed as one amongst a range of measures designed to control entrance, distinguished primarily by the fact that it is exercised inside the territory of the state. But deportation also has broader social and political effects. It provides a powerful way through which the state reminds noncitizens that their presence in the polity is contingent upon acceptable behavior. Furthermore, in liberal democratic states immunity from deportation is one of the key privileges that citizens enjoy that distinguishes them from permanent residents. This book examines the historical, institutional and social dimensions of the relationship between deportation and citizenship in liberal democracies. Contributions also include analysis of the formal and informal functions of administrative immigration detention, and the role of the European Parliament in the area of irregular immigration and borders. The book also develops an analytical framework that identifies and critically appraises grassroots and sub national responses to migration policy in liberal democratic societies, and considers how groups form after deportation and the employment of citizenship in this particular context, making it of interest to scholars and international policy makers alike.

    Abstract: The book is part of the 5-volume series “German Social Policy”, a unique multidisciplinary approach to the history of German social policy written by the doyens of their respective disciplines. The volumes expound the contribution of the German tradition to the rise of social policy in the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Germany pioneered modern social policy in the 19th century when Bismarck introduced social insurance. After the Second World War, Germany’s Social Market Economy became a model of social integration. The volumes cover the history of ideas (volume 1), the legal and political history before and after 1945 (volumes 2 and 3), the German Democratic Republic (1949-1990) and the impact of German reunification (1990) (volume 4). Volume 5 embeds the German case in a major comparative study of European welfare states, complemented by a study of the USA and the Soviet Union. The volumes also yield insights into general theoretical issues of social policy beyond the empirical case of Germany. Each volume has an introduction by the editor who summarizes the contribution made by the volumes and looks into the future of German social policy. In the burgeoning literature on welfare regimes and typologies, this comparative study offers a stimulating new perspective. Kaufmann, the doyen of the sociology of social policy in Germany, emphasizes norms, culture and history, in contrast to political economy approaches. Comparing Britain, Sweden, France and Germany, Kaufmann highlights the „idiosyncrasy” of each welfare state: countries are compared with regard to their state traditions and the relationship between state and civil society; their national “social questions”; their economic systems, including the unions and labour law; social security and redistribution; and their personal social services and education. The socio-cultural approach enables Kaufmann to show that not all modern states are welfare states. Some are just „capitalism“ (the USA), others are „socialism“ (the former Soviet Union). In this light, the (essentially North-West European) welfare state is portrayed as a third way between capitalism and socialism

    Abstract: The end of the Cold War has prompted many donors of Official Development Assistance (ODA) to fundamentally realign their global aid and trade relations. Despite recent progress in untying ODA and a number of related efforts to enhance the overall efficiency of international cooperation with the poorest countries, it remains unexplained why some OECD states have liberalised their bilateral programmes to a considerable extent - whereas others have continued to use foreign aid as a means to promote domestic exports.     Abstract: We all view the ubiquitous term ‘sustainability’ as a worthwhile goal. But how can we apply the principles of sustainability in the real world, at the sharp end of communities in developing nations where income insecurity is the troubled norm? This volume provides some practical answers, explaining the precepts of the ‘sustainable livelihood approach’ (SLA) through the case study of a microfinance scheme in Africa. The case study, centered around the work of the Catholic Church’s Diocesan Development Services organization, involved an SLA implemented over two years designed in part to help enhance its existing microfinance operation through closer links between local communities and international donors. The book’s central conclusion is that we must move beyond the concept of sustainable livelihood itself, with its in-built polarities between developed and developing nations, and embrace a more global notion of ‘sustainable lifestyle’; a more nuanced and inclusive approach that encompasses not just how we make a sustainable living, but how we can live sustainable lives

    Abstract: Diseases are everyday, ordinary occurrences intimately related to people’s daily lives. However, as the metaphor of the “Sick Man of East Asia” emerged against the backdrop of a weak modern China, health care and the curing of diseases were turned into grand state politics with far-reaching implications. This book, starting with the argument for diseases being metaphors, describes and interprets such incidents in China’s history as the Abolishment of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Patriotic Hygiene Campaign and the Cooperative Medical Services. In an effort to reveal the internal logic of disease politics in the transformation of the state-people relationship, the book analyzes key aspects including the politicization and inclusion of diseases in state governance, the double disciplining of hygiene, legitimacy construction of the state, the remaking of the nationals, and the expansion of the “publicness” of the state. The book argues that disease politics in modern China has developed following the path from nationals to the people, and then to citizens, or from crisis politics and mobilization politics to life politics. In addition, a marked change has occurred in China’s state building: increasingly standard, rationalized and institutionalized means have been employed while the non-standard means, such as large-scale mobilization and ideological coercion, had been historically used in China

    Abstract: Arbeitswissenschaften, Prozessgestaltung und Unternehmensorganisation, Informatik und Unternehmensberatung stützen sich auf Kooperation als elementare Methode der unternehmerischen Wertschöpfung. Um die Prinzipien der Kooperation anwenden zu können, beginnt das Buch mit einer grundlegenden Hinführung zum Thema. Die entscheidenden Fragen Wer kann kooperieren? und Was ist Kooperation? werden zum Ausgangspunkt der Bearbeitung: Lebensformen und Vernunft, soziale Systeme und Begriffe wie Intelligenz, Wahrheitstheorie und Kommunikationstheorie werden einbezogen. Der Bogen zur Wertschöpfung wird aus zwei Dimensionen einer Matrix aufgezogen: „kooperationsgeeignete und -ungeeignete Anreize“ und „kooperationsgeeignete und -ungeeignete Prozesse“. Dies führt zu Szenarien, die anhand einiger Beispiele aus der Praxis betrachtet werden.     Abstract: Befinden sich kontinentaleuropäische Marktwirtschaften in einem fundamentalen Wandlungsprozess? Spätestens seit den 1990er-Jahren haben die Globalisierung der Finanzmärkte und die Liberalisierungsschritte der Europäischen Union einen Prozess eingeleitet, der nationale Finanzsysteme und Corporate-Governance-Strukturen unter massiven Veränderungsdruck setzt. David Furch zeigt, dass sich trotz ähnlicher Reformbestrebungen in Deutschland und Italien unterschiedliche Reformergebnisse beobachten lassen: Während sich in Deutschland moderate Anzeichen für eine stärkere Betonung liberaler Strukturen finden lassen, bleibt das italienische System unter seiner Oberfläche vergleichsweise stabil. Selbst die umfangreiche Stärkung von Transparenzstandards und Minderheitsaktionärsrechten konnte die etablierten Kontrollstrukturen des Familienkapitalismus kaum aufbrechen. In Deutschland hingegen hat vor allem der Strategiewechsel der Großbanken zu einer Auflösung des Insider-Netzwerkes geführt

    Abstract: Unternehmensnetzwerke sind neben Märkten und betrieblichen Hierarchien eine weitere Form wirtschaftlicher Organisation. Die Studie zeichnet die Verflechtungen deutscher Großunternehmen durch gemeinsame Aufsichtsräte vom ausgehenden Kaiserreich bis zum Fall der Weimarer Republik nach und dokumentiert am empirischen Material den Formationsprozess der Deutschland AG. Im Zentrum der Analyse stehen die Banken, aus deren Präsenz in Industrieaufsichtsräten lange auf eine einseitige Unternehmenskontrolle geschlossen wurde. Die Daten lassen eine Bestätigung dieses Befundes allerdings nicht zu, sondern zeigen vielmehr, dass die Besonderheit des Netzwerkes entgegen eines allgemeinen evolutionären Trends des sozialen Wandels zur funktionalen Ausdifferenzierung und Spezialisierung gerade in seiner funktionalen Unspezifität liegt

    Abstract: Mit welcher inneren Logik haben wir es zu tun, wenn vor allem hochqualifiziert Beschäftigte einen völlig übersteigerten Arbeitseinsatz an den Tag legen und freiwillig und mit zunehmender Häufigkeit ihre physischen und psychischen Grenzen überschreiten? Dieses Buch lässt sich als Beitrag für eine Debatte verstehen, die sich in spezifischer Weise einer „Soziologie des Burnout“ verschreibt. Interessiert an den Belastungs- und Beanspruchungsfolgen flexibler Arbeit verknüpft die Autorin ihre eigene Selbstbetroffenheit mit wissenschaftlicher Analyse und konstruiert auf zwei unterschiedlichen Theorieebenen ein Erklärungsmodell für die „freiwillige Selbstausbeutung“. Zunächst wird auf der Subjektebene und mit Hilfe moderner arbeitssoziologischer Kategorien Begriffsarbeit geleistet. Bei genauerem Hinsehen entpuppt sich die Verausgabungsbereitschaft von Erwerbstätigen aber als Resultat von handelndem Zusammenwirken: Das Anpassungsverhalten in Akteurkonstellationen führt zu unintendierten Struktureffekten und zu sozialen Zwangsmustern: spieltheoretisch rekonstruierbar als „Prisoner´s Dilemma“ einer kollegialen Arbeitsbeziehung.
