Abstract: "This book offers new and compelling insight into the emergent shared culture of the relationship between political actors and journalists in nine European democracies. It is a truly comparative account of the attitudes of 2,500 political communication elites between Helsinki and Madrid on various aspects of the media's role in politics and on the mutual relationship of politicians, political spokespersons and journalists. The study identifies national political communication cultures across Europe over the importance of journalists in advocacy and commentary, pressures on the media and perceived political influence. It also highlights that professional roles determine the perception of news-making, the interpretation of daily political life and the ethos of professional conduct and interaction. "--

Abstract: "Immigrant incorporation is a critical challenge for France and other European societies today. Sub-Saharan African immigrant families experience 'Another France.' Racialization is inherent in the immigration process for African migrants, and a low immigrant status is granted, limiting their employment and social integration, and often irrespective of their qualifications or citizenship documents. First and second generation African youth report being, 'French on the inside, African on the out,' because they hold a French mentality, but are continually put into an 'other' category. The 'power of skin' accords this status of 'immigrant other' which infiltrates all social interaction. Further, the practices of a French universalism and secularism taken together have become a straightjacket and 'ostrich policy' for France. "--

Abstract: "Capitalism and the Social Relationship examines the changing external environment of organizations. It explores the contradictions within the global capitalist system and their consequences; it assess and finds ways to create new knowledge for managers/leaders to reorient themselves in appropriate restructuring of organizations to better serve their stakeholders. The particular benefits offered by the book are: (1) a systematic discussion of capitalism as a system with the recent crises as a starting point which provides a vivid example for readers, (2) an explanation of why capitalism as a global system is at a crossroads, (3) a discussion of the capitalism 'dilemma' as part of the external environment of organizations and its impact on internal structures and relationships, and (4) the connection between fundamental economic outlook and its impact on managerial and organizational perspectives"--

Abstract: "The globalization of food consumption has often been equated with the loss of culinary traditions and the homogenization of cuisines. By contrast, the anthropologists, historians and sociologists contributing to this collection reveal both rapid changes and also profound and sometimes surprising continuities in local food consumption practices in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and use these to shed light on shifting social boundaries and cultural identities. The volume combines ethnographic, historical and comparative analyses, situating local practices of eating, cooking and sharing food within transnational processes and contexts. In so doing, the volume celebrates and furthers approaches developed in Jack Goody's seminal 1982 book, Cooking, Cuisine and Class: A Study in Comparative Sociology. With studies of China, India, West Africa, South America and Europe, the book provides a truly global perspective on the social dynamics of food consumption in the modern world"--

Abstract: This book draws attention to what is intangible to the majority, namely an alternative version of the events that took place in Rwanda before and during 1994, including cease-fire violations, human rights abuses, killings and other abuses, all of which were committed by the RPF. The book is the first of its kind to deconstruct the dominant narrative of the circumstances leading up to, and during, the period defined as the Rwandan genocide, highlighting the suppression of evidence that runs contrary to the dominant narrative. It controversially questions the accepted wisdom of the events using a revisionist interrogation of the evidence, aiming to provide the most robust and academically credible investigation on the issue of the Rwandan genocide through an interrogation of all the claims made to support the genocide thesis. The author adopts a logical-historical approach which aims to situate the killings within a historically-specific context, drawing out a dynamic interplay between national and international actors to provide the most empirically detailed and forthright investigation of the butchery of Rwanda's Tutsis, and the perpetrators

Abstract: "As the velocity and intensity of migrations increase around the world, legal citizenship and ethnicity are becoming two of the most contested issues facing the modern state. Many of today's debates about immigration are focused on arguments around the positive and negative effects of increased ethnic diversity and who should be entitled to legal membership. What does it mean politically then to arrive in a country privileged as a legal citizen or co-ethnic? This book is the first to comparatively analyze the political realities of Dutch Antillean citizens in the Netherlands, and Latin American Nikkeijin (Japanese descendants) in Japan, who inherit host state access as post-colonial citizens and ethnic immigrants. Sharpe's unique cross-regional investigation considers the ways in which globalization, immigration, citizenship, and ethnicity interact as a means to understanding some of the strains and contradictions of membership in contemporary liberal democratic states. Postcolonial Citizens and Ethnic Migration will appeal to a wide range of scholars in political science, sociology, anthropology, international relations, ethnic studies and migration"--

Abstract: Remittance is the most beneficial private transaction in the global economy. The South Asian region accounts for about one fourth of the global remittance flows destined for developing countries, contributing to over ten percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) of South Asia. This significant amount of remittance has enormous potential for development in the region. The volume, essentially a South Asian viewpoint, provides theoretical treatments of remittance and how its development potential is translated into reality. The authors meticulously delve into the diverse mechanisms through which migrant communities remit, investigating how recipients engage in the development process in South Asia

Abstract: "The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is one of China's most strategically important, resource-rich and largest regions but also one of the country's most troublesome, the region now being synonymous with ethnic conflict and nationalist movements. This detailed and compelling study sets out to explore how the Chinese government has governed Xinjiang in light of growing tensions in the region exploring initiatives such as the partner assistance programme to understand the extent to which attempts to reverse the deteriorating situation have been effective. Furthermore, this study also provides compelling insights into how policies vary in different regions, focusing in particular on the role played by officials in interpreting and implementing these policies within their specific locale. It shows that Communist Party strategy and policy become messy when introduced at a micro-level as local governments interpret how these policies should work within their particular region. As such, this text is invaluable to students and scholars of policy-making and implementation in China"--

Abstract: European institutions affect the day-to-day functioning of film, television, radio and the Internet. Their 'meddling' with media provokes many tensions, most importantly with member states including France, Germany, Belgium and Hungary. In addition, Europe's intervention is often deemed overly economic in approach, focusing on the success of an internal market - to the detriment of public interest objectives such as pluralism, diversity and universality. This handbook sheds light on these tensions through state-of-the-art, scientific contributions on various domains of European media policies. Abstract: This book addresses the increasing role of queer politics within forms of Islamophobia, both by exploring the framing of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues as a key marker of western superiority and by identifying the ways in which Muslim homophobia contributes to this dialectic, No one can doubt that Muslim cultures and Muslim populations are under intense scrutiny in the west and worldwide. Moreover, queer politics has been increasingly drawn into this contemporary Islamophobia. This book presents a detailed interdisciplinary study of the issues surrounding homosexuality and Muslim cultures, drawing on sociological theories of modernity and modernization, evidence of Muslim homo-eroticism in historical and contemporary context, and contemporary political ideas of queer politics, multiculturalism and international development. The book presents an original theoretical framework that describes the ways in which both queer and Muslim politics are caught up in a process of triangulation that asserts the superiority of western civilization. Using an intersectional framework, it also begins to map a way out of this oppositional understanding of homosexuality and Islam, both by drawing on the evidence of the complexity of lived experience for Queer Muslims and by challenging the euro-centric conceits of queer political and social theory
Abstract: "Momin's book is one of the best analysis of homosexuality and modern Muslim identity to appear recently. While the book is an in depth look at the current debates about Muslims and modernity, its theoretical tools are fundamental to understanding the complex notion of modernity. It reminded me of Timothy Mitchel's The Colonization of Egypt. Momin's book is a comprehensive work, exhaustively researched, judicious in its assessment and sets forth a theoretical model that will alter the way we understand Muslim modernity. An outstanding work. Its implications go to the heart of the debate about what modernity means." - Walid Saleh, Professor of Islamic Studies, University of Toronto, Canada "This book navigates deftly through the fraught relationship of Islam and homosexuality, pulling apart the quick equation of the West with the modern liberal embrace of gay rights and Islam with the opposite. Offering both personal and theoretical reflections, this is the landmark study that sets the standard for scholarship on the nexus between gay and Muslim." - Barry Adam, Professor of Sociology, University of Windsor, Canada

Abstract: Contemporary culture offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic concern. This book explores such representations, uncovering the roots of our cultural responses to the internet, centred upon a profoundly ambivalent reaction to technological modernity, Contemporary culture offer contradictory views of the internet and new media technologies, painting them in extremes of optimistic enthusiasm and pessimistic foreboding. While some view them as a repository of hopes for democracy, freedom and self-realisation, others consider these developments as sources of alienation, dehumanisation and danger. This book explores such representations, and situates them within the traditions of utopian and dystopian thought that have shaped the Western cultural imaginary. Ranging from ancient poetry to post-humanism, and classical sociology to science fiction, it uncovers the roots of our cultural responses to the internet, which are centred upon a profoundly ambivalent reaction to technological modernity. Majid Yar argues that it is only by better understanding our society's reactions to technological innovation that we can develop a balanced and considered response to the changes and challenges that the internet brings in its wake

Abstract: "Chinese Discourse Studies presents an innovative and systematic approach to discourse and communication in contemporary China. Incorporating Chinese philosophy and theory, it offers not only a distinct cultural paradigm in the field, but also a culturally sensitive and effective tool for studying Chinese discourses. In addition to paradigmatic construction, the book applies this new framework to local and global issues in present-day China, such as human rights, trade disputes and urban development. This book unpacks the critical implications for understanding cultural diversity, division and development both within the discipline and beyond, making it an invaluable resource researchers of discourse analysis, Chinese studies, and cultural studies. Abstract: This book examines the migration, integration and transnational activity of overseas Americans - American migrants - in France, Germany and the UK. It examines the reasons for their migration, introduces the concept of 'accidental migrant' and explores the question of overseas Americans' integration and identity formation, While overseas Americans are often seen as short-term corporate transferees or backpackers, there are also many Americans - estimates range from 2 to 7 million - living overseas. This book explores the case of longer-term overseas Americans - migrants - in France, Germany and the UK. What has led them to leave the United States? How does their integration in Europe proceed? This book explores both of these questions in depth, while also examining the case of American political engagement in the United States. The book draws on almost 900 survey responses and over 100 in-depth interviews carried out in Berlin, Paris and London

Abstract: "Culture, understood broadly, lay at the heart of contrasting right-wing strategies for government in France during the pivotal decade of 2002-2012. Looking at issues of political secularism, educational reform, televisual performance, public memory and nation-branding, Ahearne analyses how Presidents Chirac and Sarkozy sought to redefine contemporary French identity. The study extends prevailing conceptions of 'cultural policy', and shows how this constitutes a core dimension, alongside economic and social policies, of modern right-wing government. It traces, over the course of the decade in question, a dramatic hardening of the attitudes and values informing these programmes for cultural hegemony. These reflect enduring transformations in the political and symbolic landscape of contemporary France"--

Abstract: In the 21st Century, a perfect storm appears to have engulfed many of Britain's most important institutions. The list of those it has enveloped is extensive, but headline acts would include - the banking sector for malpractice, Parliament for its expenses scandal, the media for phone-hacking and the police for duplicity and corruption. It raises a fundamental question of whether there is an endemic and fundamental crisis in British political, economic and social institutions or instead simply a set of contingent events that have been discursively constructed and presented as a collective crisis. This volume offer the first major, wholesale consideration of the extent to which a crisis of legitimacy has taken root in Britain's key institutions. It does so by exploring the nature of crisis across a diverse range of institutions, assessing the accuracy of the 'crisis' label and crucially considers whether a set of shared underlying pathologies exist that has led to a point of collective crisis and the need for fundamental renewal

Abstract: Why have the minutiae of how parents raise their children become routine sources of public debate and policy making? This book provides in-depth answers to these features drawing on a wide range of sources from sociology, history, anthropology and psychology, covering developments in both Europe and North America, Why do we live at a time when the minutiae of how parents raise their children - how they feed them, talk to them, play with them or discipline them - have become routine sources of public debate and policy making? Why are there now so-called 'parenting experts', and social movements like Attachment Parenting, telling us that 'science says' what parents do is the cause of and solution to social problems? Parenting Culture Studies provides in-depth answers to these features of contemporary social life drawing on a wide range of sources from sociology, history, anthropology, psychology and policy studies to do so, covering developments in both Europe and North America. Key chapters cover the 'intensification of parenting', the rise of the 'parenting expert', the politicizing of parent-child relationships, and the weakening of bonds between generations. Five essays detail contemporary examples of obsessions with parenting, discussing drinking and pregnancy, attachment theory, neuroscience and family policy, fathering, and 'helicopter parenting'. The Introduction situates parental determinism in the wider context of risk consciousness and the demise of social confidence about how to approach the future. Comprehensive in scope and accessibly written, this book will be an indispensable resource for students, researchers, policy-makers and parents seeking a deeper understanding of the debates surrounding parenting and society today
Abstract: "The authors of this timely collection are in the forefront of analyses of contemporary parenting. The discourses and practices of parenting are rarely held up for sustained critique. Readers of this book will be challenged to question the politics and rationales of parenting cultures in this provocative and cogently argued book." - Deborah Lupton, University of Sydney, Australia

Abstract: "This book explores the role of children and young people within early modern England's most controversial minority: Catholicism. It examines Catholic attempts to capture the next generation, Protestant reactions to these initiatives, and the religious, social, legal and political contexts in which young people formed, maintained and attempted to explain their religious identity. The young, it argues, were not inevitably pawns in a world governed by hierarchies of kinship, workplace, church and state. The motives and even the voices of those who challenged various manifestations of authority in the early modern world can often be recovered, and the choices they made tell us much about the complex and changing relationships between society, church and state in the post-Reformation world"--

Abstract: The 'proactionary principle' was introduced by transhumanists. Whereas precautionaries believe that we are on the brink on environmental catastrophe because we're too willing to take risks, proactionaries believe that humans stand apart from the rest of nature by our capacity for successful risk taking. In terms of current environmental problems, therefore, solutions lie not in turning our backs on our love affair with technology but by intensifying it – through finding new energy sources or even looking at the possibility of inhabiting other worlds. In this fascinating new book, Steve Fuller and Veronika Lipinska explore attitudes towards the transformation of human nature. They point out that, politically, both those on the right and the left contribute to different sides of the precautionary-proactionary debate, and argue that it will be this distinction, between caution and action, that will come to dominate the political landscape and create new political divisions. Drawing on perspectives from both theology and biology, and completing a trilogy of works exploring 'Humanity 2.0', Fuller and Lipinska ultimately endorse the proactionary position, which supports individuals taking risks – for example with new health treatments, as they try to expand their life chances. They accept that such a risk-taking culture may result in set-backs and failures, but argue that this simply requires a new conception of the welfare state. The results may be an incredibly diverse society that will challenge our notions of tolerance, creating a world where 'traditional' humans live side by side with those who have artificial organs or have received substantial genetic modification. Humans have yet to treat all 'normal' members of Homo sapiens with proper respect and dignity and the proactionary principle opens up new challenges to our conceptions of equality. The book ends with a Manifesto that draws together the arguments to present a challenging vision for the future.
